Advani’s yatra enters scam-hit Karnataka

Bangalore, Oct 30 (IANS) The anti-corruption yatra of Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader L.K. Advani entered scam-hit Karnataka Sunday as he flew into this tech hub from Kerala.

“Advani arrived here by a special aircraft from

Kochi along with the party’s national leaders M. Venkaiah Naidu, Ravi Shankar Prasad and H.N. Ananth Kumar while his vehicle is on way to Mangalore from north Kerala,” a party spokesman told IANS here.

Though Advani will go to Mangalore Monday morning to resume his pan-Indian Jan Chetna Yatra through the coastal districts of the state over the next two days before crossing into Goa, the BJP’s state unit took out rallies in various cities to drum-up support to the party’s crusade against corruption and for good governance.

“All cabinet ministers of the state, including Chief Minister D.V. Sadananda Gowda, party’s state unit office-bearers and national leaders will participate in the public rally-cum-meeting at the National College grounds in Bangalore late Sunday,” the spokesman said.

“There are no differences either in the government or the ruling party over the war against corruption,” he added.

With the BJP’s first chief minister in south India, B.S. Yeddyurappa, and the ruling party’s other tainted lawmakers Katta Subramanya Naidu, S.N. Krishnaiah Shetty and Y. Sampangi in the central jail on the city’s outskirts for their alleged involvement in graft cases and land scams, the party’s leaders have resolved to expose the multi-crore scams of the United Progressive Alliance (UPA) central government and in the Congress-ruled states.

Another former BJP minister, G. Janardhan Reddy, is also cooling heels in the Chanchalguda jail in Hyderabad since Sep 5 for his alleged involvement in the multi-crore mining scam in the state and neighbouring Andhra Pradesh.

Meanwhile, elaborate security arrangements were made for the public meeting in Bangalore to maintain law and order.

“We have deployed about 1,500 personnel, including senior officials, at the venue to supervise the security measures and ensure peaceful conduct of the public rally,” Bangalore police commissioner Jyothi Prakash Mirji told reporters.

A dozen closed circuit television cameras (CCTVs) have been installed across the sprawling grounds and vehicular traffic restricted to prevent grid lock.

In a related development, the opposition Congress took out a huge procession in the city and held a protest meeting against Advani’s yatra with about 1,000 party cadres and supporters sporting black badges.

“The BJP and Advani have no moral right to go on a nationwide yatra against corruption when its state leaders and lawmakers are steeped in corruption and half-a-dozen of them are behind bars,” state Congress president G. Parameshwara said.

NRI Republican candidate in sex scandal

New York, May 26 — Days after she took the lead in a poll of Republican candidates seeking the party’s nomination to contest for Governor of the US State of South Carolina, Indian-American Nikki Randhawa Haley was hit by allegations of infidelity by a political operative-turned-blogger. In a post, the blogger, Will Folks, who worked for current State Governor Mark Sanford said, “Several years ago, prior to my marriage, I had an inappropriate physical relationship with Nikki.” That statement received a sharp rebuttal from Haley. She said, “I have been 100 per cent faithful to my husband throughout our 13 years of marriage. This claim against me is categorically and totally false.”

Sarah Palin, Republican John McCain’s running mate during the 2008 Presidential election, also quickly leapt to Haley’s defence. In an online post Palin wrote that she told Haley: “Hang in there. I’ve been there. Any lies told about you will strengthen your resolve to clean up political and media corruption. You and your supporters will grow stronger through things like this.”

World Cup bosses seek Interpol”s help to probe bid corruption claims

London, May 21 (ANI): World Cup bosses have sought the help of Interpol to investigate Lord Triesman”s allegations of corruption.

FIFA general secretary Jerome Valcke revealed football”s governing body is working with the international police agency to see if there is any substance to the claims.

The allegations cost Lord Triesman his role as head of England”s 2018 bid and new chairman Geoff Thompson will today meet FIFA President Sepp Blatter for the first time since the scandal broke, The Mirror reports.

Thompson, the former FA chairman who is a FIFA vice-chairman and also a senior member of the UEFA High Command, plans to meet the other European members of the world body”s ruling executive committee over the next 48 hours.

His meeting with FIFA president Sepp Blatter, however, will be crucial in helping bid chief executive Andy Anson and the rest of his team get to grips with the challenge they face in persuading a majority of the 24 ex-co members to vote for England in Zurich on December 2.

The bid team believe Thompson”s status within the FIFA family will help soothe the anger felt by Triesman”s comments, dismissed as lacking credibility by FIFA general secretary Jerome Valcke. (ANI)

Pak’s stunning defeat in Sydney Test under ICC’s anti-match fixing unit’s scanner

London, May 21 (ANI): Pakistan’s strikingly below par performance during the Australia tour in January-February is now under the International Cricket Council’s (ICC) anti-corruption unit’s scanner.

Pakistan had lost the Sydney Test by 36-runs despite taking a handsome lead in the first innings, and it is this loss which has caught the the ICC’s attention.

Chairman of the ICC’s anti-corruption and security unit (ACSU) Lord Condon confirmed that investigations were on to probe the alleged involvement of some of the Pakistani cricketers in the scandal.

“That has been an ongoing investigation since the time.It is a match and series that worried us, we spent a lot of time talking to the players and PCB. The challenge is finding where is the solid fact,” Condon said during a press conference here.

“What you have there is a lot of strife within the team and Pakistan politics with rivals camps making allegations. We are satisfied that was a totally dysfunctional tour from a Pakistan point of view. The dysfunctionality in the dressing room led to players not performing well, to maybe players potentially underperforming deliberately,” he added.

Referring to wicket keeper Kamran Akmal’s shoddy show during the Sydney Test, in which he dropped three easy catches and missed a straightforward run out chance, Condon said his performance is particularly being investigated.

“What we are trying to establish is whether that was because rival camps wanted to do down captains or potential captains. Or whether they were doing something more serious, for a financial fix,” The Daily Times quoted Condon, as saying.

Condon, however, pointed that it was difficult to completely eradicate the menace of match fixing.

“My prediction is you will never totally eradicate it from cricket. There will always be that temptation. But we had a cadre of modern players who know the risks and are playing for the right reasons,” he said. (ANI)

The paper launched Save Our Bid this week, calling on FIFA to ignore former bid chairman Lord Triesman’s corruption claims.

UK commander says Karzai”s step-bro would rather watch Chelsea play

Kabul, May 14 (ANI): A senior British commander attached with the NATO forces in southern Afghanistan, has revealed that Afghan President Hamid Karzai’s half-brother, Ahmad Wali Karzai, would “rather be watching Chelsea” play football than be involved in sorting out his nation”s problems.

Powerful Wali Karzai has repeatedly been accused of having links with drug tafficking and corruption – which he denies.

Major General Nick Carter, the British commander of NATO forces in southern Afghanistan, said: “Ahmad Wali Karzai is an avid Chelsea supporter.

“He tells me he would far rather be watching Chelsea win the Premiership than wasting time trying to settle disputes at his house in south-western Kandahar city.”

The senior soldier also revealed concerns over Kandahar”s powerful provincial council providing “much more governance than perhaps it is mandated to do through the Afghan Constitution.”

He suggested that Wali Karzai is willing to relinquish some of his influence.

The British commander said the situation in Kandahar was more complicated than in Helmand, but it was “essentially a political problem”. (ANI)

Obama open to Karazai plan for talks with Taliban

Washington, May 13 (IANS) US President Barack Obama has indicated that he may accept Afghan President Hamid Karzai’s plan to reconcile with certain Taliban leaders to bring peace to the war-torn nation.

‘With respect to perceived tensions between the US government and the Afghan government, let me begin by saying a lot of them were simply overstated,’ he said at a joint press conference with Karzai after a 45-minute meeting in his Oval office.

Tensions were bound to recur and that difficult work remained in addressing one another’s concerns, such as corruption in the Afghan government and civilian casualties resulting from US-led military action, they both said.

Karzai here for a strategic dialogue with the US, has over the last two days has met top US officials including Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton, Secretary of Defence Robert M. Gates and military leaders.

In his remarks, Karzai said he was committed to helping the White House meet its goals: defeating extremists, ridding his government of corruption, and setting up a viable security force that can step in once the US starts withdrawing troops in July 2011.

‘We are in a campaign against terrorism together,’ Karzai said. ‘There are days that we are happy; there are days that we are not happy. It’s a mutual relationship towards a common objective.’

Obama in turn indicated that he was open to Karzais peace plan of reconciling with some of the Taliban leaders. Obama said that the jirga, or tribal assembly of elders, would provide a basis for future talks.

‘What we’ve said is that so long as there’s a respect for the Afghan constitution, rule of law, human rights; so long as they are willing to renounce violence and ties to Al Qaeda and other extremist networks; that President Karzai should be able to work to reintegrate those individuals into Afghan society,’ Obama said.

To maximize leverage in such negotiations, the coalition needs more success in routing the Taliban, he said.

‘One of the things I emphasised to President Karzai, however, is, that the incentives for the Taliban to lay down arms, or at least portions of the Taliban to lay down arms, and make peace with the Afghan government in part depends on our effectiveness in breaking their momentum militarily,’ Obama said.

In a joint statement released Wednesday, Obama said it was his ‘strong desire’ to have Afghan security forces conduct all searches, arrests and detention operations.

In the news conference, Karzai said the agreement to form a team of advisors that will come up with a new timeline for handing over the prison was a ‘major point of progress.’

“We are reaffirming our shared goal to disrupt, dismantle and defeat Al Qaeda and its extremist allies,” Obama said.

With a smiling Mr. Karzai standing by his side, the New York Times quoted Obama, as saying: “With respect to perceived tensions between the U.S. government and the Afghan government, let me begin by saying a lot of them were simply overstated.”

Clarke hopes IPL survives Modi’s dramatic suspension

Sydney, Apr 27 (ANI): Australia Twenty20 skipper Michael Clarke hopes that the Indian Premier League can survive Monday’s dramatic suspension of Lalit Modi by the BCCI, after allegations of corruption and match-fixing surfaced.

Clarke said the IPL has been a great benefit to the next generation of Australian players.

“The IPL is a wonderful tournament. It has given guys a great opportunity on a major stage to state their case for international cricket,” Clarke said in St Lucia as Australia prepared for the T20 World Cup.

“Guys have gone over there and done really well at the IPL level and they’ve got their chance for their country,” The Sydney Morning Herald quoted him, as saying.

“It’s a tournament that I would love to take part in at the right time. I just haven’t found the right time so far in my career,” Clarke said.

“I hope I will in the future. Speaking to the guys who played a part this year, they said the tournament was fantastic. They had a great time and the cricket was very competitive.

“I really hope that it does continue and I hope one day I get an opportunity to take part,” he said.

Modi was suspended hours after the IPL final on Sunday night. (ANI)

Teens on Facebook using code language for privacy

London, April 26 (ANI): Teenagers on social networking sites such as Facebook and Bebo are using code language to keep their activities private and baffle nosey parents or employers, say researchers.

Tricky teenagers say they are ‘getting MWI’ – getting mad with, instead of writing that they are drunk.

Being in a relationship is known as ”taken” or ”Ownageeee”, and ”Ridneck”, a corruption of redneck, means to feel embarassed.

Girls posting the word ‘legal’ are secretly saying they are at least 16 years old and legally allowed to have sex.

The teens are using the secret online language to stop parents and employers judging them by their social activities.

Lisa Whittaker, a postgraduate student at the University of Stirling, who studied teens aged 16-18 on Bebo in Scotland, said the slang had been created for privacy.

“Young people often distort the languages they use by making the pages difficult for those unfamiliar with the distortions and colloquialisms,” the Telegraph quoted her as saying.

“The language used on Bebo seems to go beyond abbreviations that are commonly used in text messaging, such as removing all the vowels.

“This is not just bad spelling, which would suggest literacy issues, but a deliberate attempt to creatively misspell words.

“The creation and use of their own social language may be a deliberate attempt to keep adults from understanding what is written on the page.

“By doing this they are able to communicate with their in-group and conceal the content from the out-group. This further adds to their online identity,” she added. (ANI)

Time BCCI answered to India, says Gill

New Delhi, April 22 (IANS) Indicating his ministry’s intention to take a more active role in regulating cricket in the country, Sports Minister M.S. Gill said Thursday that the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) should answer questions posed to it regarding corruption in the IPL franchises.

‘It is time it (BCCI) answered to India,’ Gill said in his reply to the debate on the working of the ministry of youth affairs and sports in the Rajya Sabha.

Referring to the controversy surrounding finances of the Indian Premier League (IPL), Gill said the league was a creation of the BCCI.

‘The ministry has to lose its passivity vis-a-vis cricket,’ he said.

‘Long before I came, it (BCCI) got suddenly rich and big, and in face of passivity of the ministry, it has taken over everything to do with cricket,’ he said.

The minister asserted there was question of conflict of interest for people working in the BCCI and the IPL and cited instance of a selector who, he said, was also a brand ambassador for an IPL team.

‘You can’t be regulator, controller, owner of the team you are creating,’ he said.

Gill seemed to agree with the suggestion of some members that the government should get a portion of the IPL profits.

He said state governments were giving tax concessions to the IPL and were providing police security for the matches. ‘You have to charge from people benefiting commercially,’ he said.

He also said that liquor and sports do not go together and cited the instance of the European Football League where drinking was banned near the stadiums.

To the demand of members to regulate sport associations, Gill said he had already told these organisations that they should have clean, clear, acceptable voters lists, an independent returning officer and secret ballot.

Stressing compulsory play-period in schools, he said the current Indian policy on education was hostile to sports.

Earlier, members cutting across party lines demanded transparency and accountability in functioning of the IPL. The Shiv Sena demanded a CBI probe into the role of IPL commissioner Lalit Modi.

Congress member Jayanti Natarjan, who initiated the debate, termed the IPL as an ‘example of crony capitalism’ and the ‘worst example of corporate governance’.

‘There is a desperate need to salvage its (IPL) reputation,’ she said

‘The entire budget of the government’s panchayat ‘yuva khel krida abhiyan’ (panchayat youth sports campaign) for five years is equivalent to the amount paid by a franchise of the IPL. IPL will make a handful of people rich, grab headlines but the rural sports programme of the government will hardly get reported in the media,’ she added.

Natarajan said that both should ‘coexist’ but ‘we should get our priorities straight’.

She added that since the IPL gets lots of concessions from the government, there should be accountability and transparency in its functioning, especially since ‘there were suggestions of multi-layered interests and hints at nexus with people who have conflict of interests.’

BJP’s Prakash Javadekar said people must know of the entire shareholding of the IPL franchises, and also took a dig at Civil Aviation Minister Praful Patel over his office staff’s alleged involvement in the IPL team bidding valuation process.

‘Valuation of Indian Airlines and Air India was not done properly,’ he said alleging that the minister was instead ‘taking interest in the valuation process of IPL bids’.

‘IPL has become a global brand and players are also earning money through it but there should be transparency about its organisation structure,’ Javadekar said, urging Sports Minister M.S. Gill to exercise his authority and bring about accountability and transparency in the IPL.

Shiv Sena member Manohar Joshi said that the IPL should be banned for some years and demanded a CBI probe into the role of Modi.

‘He has earned crores of rupees. There should be CBI inquiry against him,’ he said.

Joshi said that Modi should be told to reveal names of all those who had invested in the IPL.

Booth votes against Green-Labor deal

The Tasmanian Greens have revealed one of their members tried to block a power-sharing deal with Labor.

Bass MHA Kim Booth has indicated he did not want any of the five Greens MPs in Cabinet after years of conflict with Labor.

The Greens say the offer of a ministry for Mr McKim and cabinet secretary post for Ms O’Connor is basically the same offer made by the Premier last Friday.

The two Greens will be expected to vote with the Government on the floor of Parliament unless they absent themselves from Cabinet solidarity on certain issues.

Mr McKim says Mr Bartlett made yesterday’s follow up offer.

Mr Booth voted against it saying his conscience would not allow him to enter any agreement with the Bartlett Government after years of what he called corruption and dishonesty from certain members.

But Mr Booth says he has accepted the party’s decision and will co-operate for the sake of stable government.

The two Greens members will be sworn in tomorrow with the rest of Cabinet.
