‘We are united’, reiterates Team Anna; visits Hazare (Lead)

Ralegan Siddhi (Maharashtra), Oct 30 (IANS) Putting up a united front, Team Anna Sunday said there were no differences among its core committee members and accused the Congress of trying to create rifts through a smear campaign.

Team Anna members Sunday came here to meet activist Anna Hazare, a day after holding a core committee meeting in Ghaziabad.

In the wake of graft allegations against some members, the group also decided to draft a code of conduct for its core committee members and anybody violating it would be removed from the committee.

They also said that its members will jointly campaign in the five states that go to the polls in 2012 for a strong Lokpal institution.

“We are all united. We will wait till the winter session of parliament to see if the Lokpal bill is enacted. Otherwise, we will as a team tour the five states going to polls next year to campaign against the Congress,” Team Anna member Arvind Kejriwal told reporters here. He was flanked by members Prashant Bhushan and Kiran Bedi.

They alleged that Congress was trying to divide the team members through its smear campaign against members of the core committee of India Against Corruption.

“Some leaders of the Congress are trying to divide the team. Some are trying to discredit us. This is a 20-crore people’s agitation. If we give up the movement now, people will stop trusting us. Till the time a Lokpal institution is in place, we will continue our movement. We are all united,” Kejriwal said in the presence of Anna Hazare.

“Congress is running scared after its Hisar poll defeat. But we are not against any political party or grouping. Since Congress is in power at the centre, it should fulfill its commitment to the nation to have a corruption-free government and enact the Jan Lokpal bill,” he said.

Kejriwal and Kiran Bedi also dismissed allegations of misuse of funds by them, saying all the IAC accounts were specially audited for six months and the accounts will be put up on the movement’s website on Nov 1.

“If you still have doubts over the accounts, you can order an investigation through any government agency,” Kejriwal said.

Jagan in Delhi after party asks him to stop yatra

Congress MP Y S Jagan Mohan Reddy, who has invited the displeasure of high command over his ‘Odarpu Yatra’, on Sunday left for New Delhi where he is expected to meet top party leaders.

Jagan, who has defied the high command’s directive not to undertake the yatra, is expected to meet senior leaders over the issue, sources said.

Congress Core Committee member and Union Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee had made it clear on Saturday that Jagan should call off his yatra as per the high command’s directive.

The Congress central leadership had asked Jagan not to go ahead with his ‘Odarpu Yatra’ in Telangana in view of the surcharged atmosphere in the region.

Defying the directive, Jagan, however, embarked on the yatra on May 28. The tour was to console the families of those who allegedly committed suicide or died of shock over the death of his father Y S Rajasekhara Reddy.

Violence took place at Mahabubabad railway station ahead of Jagan’s arrival, as Telangana supporters, who were opposing his visit, threw stones and clashed with the police.

Jagan would attend a meeting of Parliamentary Standing Committee on Finance during his stay in Delhi, the sources added.

Jharkhand impasse: BJP fails to take final call

New Delhi, May 15 (ANI): The political crisis in Jharkhand continues with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) core committee failing on Saturday to take a decision on government formation in the state.

On Friday, the BJP leadership reviewed Jharkhand developments and considered the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha”s (JMM) offer of leading the JMM-BJP coalition in the State.

Three rounds of meetings were held over a six-hour period.

The BJP has, so far, maintained that its chief minister would lead the state for the next four-and-a-half years, while the JMM has been insisting on a rotational arrangement, with each chief minister (BJP’s and then JMM’s) getting 28 months each.

BJP vice president Prakash Javdekar said there was no urgency to take a decision.

He said there is a functioning government in Jharkhand and the party would come out with its decision under its own time frame.

Meanwhile, the Congress has hinted that it might demand imposition of President”s Rule if the stalemate continues.

Party spokesman Shakil Ahmed said the Congress has not staked a claim to form a government in the state.

The JMM-BJP coalition government plunged into crisis after the BJP withdrew support to Chief Minister Shibu Soren’s government after he voted in favour of the UPA during a cut motion in Parliament on April 27.

However, by April 29 the party received a letter from Hemant Soren, the son of the chief minister, offering support to the BJP in leading the coalition. (ANI)

Musharraf, Malik, other top PPP leaders to be quizzed in Bhutto assassination case

Lahore, May 4 (ANI): Former President General Pervez Musharraf, Interior Minister Rehman Malik, Law Minister Babar Awan and other Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) leaders would be quizzed in connection with the assassination of former Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto by the fact finding committee constituted by the government following the UN committee’s report.

The decision was taken during PPP’s core committee’s meeting, which was presided over by President Asif Ali Zardari.

According to sources privy to the meeting, it was decided that all leaders who accompanied Bhutto during the election rally in Rawalpindi’s Liaqaut Bagh, where she was killed in a gun and bomb attack on December 27,2007, would be interrogated- “whether they belong to the PPP or not.”

Briefing media persons after the meeting, Presidential spokesperson Farhatullah Babar said Malik told the core committee about the progress made by the three-men fact-finding committee looking into the hosing down of the Benazir’s assassination site.

He said the committee would question “some more people” before filing its report, which would be submitted to the Prime Minister within a month, The Daily Times reports. (ANI)

Tharoor asks PM to clear his name

New Delhi, Apr 20 (ANI): Former Minister of State for External Affairs Shashi Tharoor on Tuesday said that he has asked the Prime Minister, Dr. Manmohan Singh, to have the IPL cash row charges against him thoroughly investigated to ensure that his name is cleared.

In an address to Parliament, Tharoor said: “I have asked the Prime Minister to conduct a thorough investigation into the charges and want to clear my name that has been ”besmirched”.

He said he had committed nothing improper or illegal, but had resigned from the cabinet in the strongest moral traditions” of the party as he did not want to be an embarrassment to it.

He further said that he was deeply wounded by the fanciful and malicious charges levelled against him

“I am new to Indian politics…but I have a long record of public service untainted by allegations of financial irregularity,” Tharoor said.

Speaking for a short while in his native tongue Malyalam, Tharoor drew on the emotional appeal of his Thiruvananthapuram constituency and received some support from Kerala MPs.

Tharoor resigned on Sunday night after the Congress Core Committee asked him to do so.

The Income Tax (I-T) department has given a clean chit to Tharoor, saying he did not benefit from the Kochi -IPL deal.

The ministry said the I-T department is probing IPL Commissioner Lalit Modi”s offshore money and trying to find out if stakeholders are fronts for Modi.

Tharoor is reportedly in trouble after Modi tweeted to reveal that Sunanda Pushkar, a close friend of Tharoor, had been gifted sweat equity worth Rs.70 crores in the new Kochi team, which was sold for Rs.1530 crores last month.

Modi in his email to the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) chief Shashank Manohar had stated it was Tharoor who called him and instructed him not to reveal the identities of the stakeholders of the Kochi IPL franchisee.

Tharoor, however, has denied this.

Tharoor said he had ””enough”” of the controversy and denied securing any monetary interest in the Kochi IPL team. (ANI)

At Congress HQ, PM, Sonia Gandhi condole tragic, untimely demise of YSR again

New Delhi, Sep.3 (ANI): A visibly distraught and at times emotional Congress president Sonia Gandhi told media persons outside the party headquarters on Thursday that she and other members of the Congress were deeply saddened by the death of former Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Y.S. Rajsekhara Reddy and the four other people who had accompanied him in a helicopter that crashed in the Nallamala Forest Range on Wednesday.

“The death of Dr. Y.S. Rajsekhara Reddy is a huge loss for the party, for all of us, for me personally, for the state of Andhra Pradesh and for the country. He was a hardworking and committed person. We are deeply saddened by his death and that of the others who accompanied him,” she said, adding that his historic padyatra (in 2003) had helped bring the Congress back to power in Andhra Pradesh.

She described him as a man of vision and dynamism who worked with dedication for the welfare of the people. Recalling his role in the preparations for this year’s general elections, she said that Reddy had said that the party and its leadership should trust him to bring it back to power in Andhra Pradesh for a second consecutive term, as he and other local Congress leaders had worked hard to win the faith of the people.

That he ensured a landslide victory in both the assembly and general elections for the Congress, made his death all the more sad, Gandhi said.

The Prime Minster, Dr. Manmohan Singh, who was at the party headquarters for a meeting of the Congress core committee, said: Soniaji has summed up the feelings of anguish and great sorrow that all Congress men feel. The Congress has lost an outstanding and committed politician. Mr. Reddy worked tirelessly for the implementation of various welfare schemes. He will be remembered for his commitment to the development of Andhra Pradesh.”

The messages came hours after the Army and the Air Force homed in on the missing chopper carrying Reddy and four others about 40 nautical miles east of the Kurnool mountaineous area.

Para-commandos were dropped in the area and they took a couple of hours to report the discovery of the five bodies on a hilltop in a decomposed state.

Andhra Pradesh Government Chief Secretary P.Ramakanth Reddy said the copter hit the top of SreeSailam hill in the Nallamalla forest area before exploding into bits and pieces.

Speaking to newsmen here on Thursday, Reddy said: “According to the initial reports, the pilots of the copter appeared to have deviated from the given track or route due to the bad weather and hit the top of the hillock, crashed and then blasted into bits and pieces. Only the tail of the copter is remaining.”

He explained “The terrain was very difficult, only the specialized commandos who are trained to handle such situations, could go to the area.”

Two army helicopters failed to identify the location of the crash. Commandos descended from the copter and conducted the search operation,”Reddy said.

“Initially, the commandos located three bodies, the other two were scattered at different places. So, it took some time to locate them,” Reddy explained.

“All the bodies are in a state of decay due to the heavy pouring since Wednesday morning, and they were burnt and charred.”Reddy said.

In the matter like this the administration has to take utmost care, that’s the reason the confirmation has been delayed,” he added.

The Andhra Pradesh Government has announced five days of state mourning for Reddy. The national flag will fly at half-mast during this period in the state. The Union Cabinet, through a resolution, has said that Reddy will be accorded a state funeral. (ANI)

Home Secretary Pillai says Andhra CM’s missing chopper has crash-landed

New Delhi, Sep.3 (ANI): Union Home Secretary G.K. Pillai on Thursday said that the missing Bell chopper carrying Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Y.S. Rajshekhera Reddy and four others had crash-landed about 40 nautical miles east of the Kurnool mountaineous area.

Pillai said that as of now he could not hazard a guess about whether there were any survivors or whether the chief minister and the people accompanying him were injured or had moved to another location.

He confirmed that the chopper was in a very damaged state.

The Home Ministry has ordered para-commandos to immediately airdrop themselves at the location to determine the exact physical status of Reddy and the four others. The para-commandos have landed.

The para-commandos have been told to report back immediately on the situation on ground.

“We have located the helicopter. It is on top of a hill at a distance of 40 nautical miles east of Kurnool. We are trying to find out whether there were any survivors. We are not sure whether the chopper crashed. Two Air Force helicopters are orbiting there trying to find a place to land, but because the chopper is on top of a hill, it’s a jungle it has been very difficult to land,” said an Army spokesperson adding that further details were awaited from the site.

The chopper is said to be located between Rudrakonta and Rollapenta near Kurnool town. Commandos, police and paratroopers are moving towards the area

Meanwhile, the core committee of the Congress party is meeting in New Delhi to assess the latest developments. The Prime Minister, Dr. Manmohan Singh, will convene a meeting of the Union Cabinet after the Congress meeting to decide on the next steps in the operation.

Earlier reports said The Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) would conduct two fly-bys at 9.30 a.m. and 10.30 a.m. respectively with the help of CARTOSAT One and Two as part of their intensified search operations for missing Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Y.S. Rajashekhara Reddy on Thursday.

State Government sources said that they have narrowed down the search to a five-square kilometer radius in the Nallamala Forest Range where they believe the seven-seat Bell helicopter carrying the chief minister may have gone down on Wednesday between 9 a.m. and 9.30 a.m.

Notwithstanding a heavy cloud cover, a three-pronged search operation has been launched. Four helicopters have taken off for the search. At least 700 villagers, bow and arrow wielding Chenchu tribals who are familiar with the terrain and former Naxals have reportedly joined in the search operations.

The State Government has refused to make any comment on the latest developments in view of the fact that there are conflicting reports with regard to the copter’s whereabouts. There is a lot of cross-checking being done to come up with verifiable facts.

Reddy”"”s chopper went missing while he was on his way from Kurnool to Chittoor. He was accompanied by his Principal Secretary S Subramanyam and Chief Security Officer A S C Wesley. There were two pilots also on board the twin-engined Bell 430 helicopter that lost contact with Air Traffic Control at the Begumpet Airport in Hyderabad when it was headed for Chittoor district, about 600 kilometres from Hyderabad.

ISRO chief G. Madhavan Nair and his team are monitoring a low flying remote sensing plane. Satellite images are being used to try and trace the place. So far, 41 images have been taken but none of them have revealed any information about the chief minister’s whereabouts.

As of now the Indian Government has said that it has not requested the United States for help in the matter, but has confirmed that the unmanned vehicle that is presently deployed in the north eastern part of the country is being kept on standby.

The Army, Indian Air Force (IAF), Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) personnel, Andhra Police Greyhound commandos along with local police and district officials has entered the Nallamalla Forests to launch the massive search and rescue operation for Reddy.

About 250 Army personnel with night vision devices have joined the search operations.

“We have deployed two columns and one Ghatak (jungle warfare specialist) platoon in the area for searching the Chief Minister. Our troops are equipped with night vision devices such as goggles and hand held thermal imagers,” Army officials said.

Congress president Sonia Gandhi is expected to arrive in Hyderabad shortly to be with Reddy’s anguished family members and to get a hand on assessment of the search operation.

She has already sent Union Law Minister and Congress general secretary in charge of Andhra Pradesh affairs Veerappa Moily and Union Minister of State in the Prime Minister’s Office Prithviraj Chauhan to the city to monitor developments. Chauhan told press persons that the State and Central Governments are sparing no efforts to search for the chief minister.

Meanwhile, National Security Advisor M.K. Narayanan has said that while both the state and central governments are extremely concerned and worried about the missing chief minister, all available resources are being deployed for the search.

He said Army and Air Force helicopters have been conducting a search of the region. He also confirmed that two fixed-wing Sukhoi 30 aircraft with synthetic aperture radar capabilities have been pressed into service.

Forces on the ground are also on the lookout for the missing helicopter and its individuals.

Narayanan said that the lack of communication is a major problem and also ruled out the probability of a Naxal strike.

“I don”"”t think the Naxals have the capability to bring down a helicopter,” he said.

“There is no question about calling off the search till we discover what happened there. We are hopeful we will find the Chief Minister, his chief secretary and PSO without serious injuries,” he added. (ANI)

RSS maintains silence over Jaswant Singh’s expulsion

Shimla, Aug.19 (ANI): The Rashtriya Swayam Sewak Sangh (RSS), the parent body of the BJP, is maintaining its silence over the expulsion of Jawant Singh from the party.

But informed sources in the BJP told ANI that the RSS has played a behind the scene role in Jaswant’s exit.

In fact, before starting off for Shimla, BJP president Rajnath Singh met RSS chief Mohan Bhagwat and discussed some of the recent acts of “indiscipline” committed by Jaswant Singh, including taking a diametrically opposing view to thearty line in his latest book-”Jinnah – India-Partition-Independence”.

Senior BJP leader and political adviser to Rajnath Singh Prabhat Jha told ANI over phone from Shimla that Jaswant Singh was expelled on grounds of indiscipline.

“We have lost ground in the elections. He was such a senior parliamentarian, a member of the core committee and parliament. He should have maintained discipline,” Jha said.

When asked whether the RSS had played a role in Singh expulsion, Jha said: “It is the decision of BJP.”

Earlier in the day, the BJP parliamentary board decided to axe Singh following the release of his book, which eulogises Jinnah and demeans Sardar Patel and Jawaharlal Nehru.

Singh had also annoyed the party when he objected to the appointment of L.K. Advani and Arun Jaitley as Leaders of Opposition in the lower and upper houses of parliament.

He distributed a note titled Inaam (prize) and Parinam (result)in the party core group meeting in which he reportedly also asked uncomfortable questions and also expressed disappointment over the elevation of junior leaders like Sushma Swaraj to the post of Deputy Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha.

Singh confirmed to reporters in SHimla today that he had distributed this paper. By Naveen Kapoor (ANI)

West Bengal Govt. against indiscriminate use of UAPA

Kolkata, June 29 (ANI): West Bengal Chief Minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee has told his Cabinet colleagues that his government would not indiscriminately use the Unlawful Activities Prevention Act, under which the Centre banned the Communist Party of India (Maoists).

PWD Minister Khiti Goswami has quoted Buddhadeb as saying at a meeting of the Cabinet Core Committee formed to tackle the Maoists problem in the state.

Goswami told media that the Chief Minister also informed the Committee that the joint forces operating against the Maoists in Lalgarh and its surrounding areas in West Midnapore District have been able to liberate nearly 95 percent of the areas under Maoists’ control without bloodshed and any major encounters.

On Monday, security forces, however, took control of Katapahari in Lalgarh without much resistance from either the Maoists or the Peoples’ Committee.

However, there was a landmine blast in the area and six landmines were detected during the operations of the joint forces of the West Bengal police and Central para-military forces. (ANI)

PM wants Montek Singh Ahluwalia as Finance Minister?

New Delhi, May 17 (ANI): As the Congress core committee brainstorms over the issues related to government formation, there are reports that Dr. Manmohan Singh wants deputy chairman of the Planning Commission Montek Singh Ahluwalia as the next Union Finance Minister.

Ahluwalia will have to enter the cabinet through the Rajya Sabha route, the same as the Dr. Singh, CNN-IBN reports.

With party leaders insisting that the UPA does not need the support of any new big allies, the Congress is also likely to keep key portfolios with it.

There is also a demand from within the party to bring Rahul Gandhi into the Cabinet especially after his successful campaigning strategies, particularly in Uttar Pradesh.

According to the sources, Rahul is likely to be included as the Rural Development Minister in the Cabinet.

Sources revealed that the new Cabinet would include several young MPs.

The other young MPs apart from Rahul who are likely to be inducted into the Cabinet include Sachin Pilot, Jitin Prasada, and Sandeep Dikshit.

The major UPA allies such as the Dravida Munnettra Kazhagam (DMK), the Trinamool Congress and the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) also are expecting ministerial berths.

Reports claimed that the UPA Chairperson Sonia Gandhi has already called up Rashtriya Janata Dal chief Lalu Prasad to attend the Cabinet meeting.

There are speculations doing rounds that the External Affairs Minister Pranab Mukherjee will be shifted to the Finance Ministry, which the Manmohan Singh has been handling so far.

Commerce Minister Kamal Nath is likely to be shifted to the External Affairs Ministry.

Home Minister P Chidambaram and Defence Minister A K Antony are likely to continue in their posts. Science and Technology Minister Kapil Sibal may get the Commerce Ministry. (ANI)

Thirty-three-year-old Girish Kumar Singh was the third name announced by the YFE as probable candidates for the New Delhi constituency. “In the US, they have open debates on national issues and people judge the best candidate.

But in India, nothing is transparent. We want to set an example by letting the people decide who they want to vote for,” said Tomar.

The mother of two was encouraged by her father to join the YFE movement. “He was reading the paper and told me about the ideology of the YFE. I was attracted to the fact that they talked of equality for all,” said Tomar, who was the first batch of commissioned lady officers and did her training from Officers Training Academy, Madras.

Khanna belongs to the Professionals Party of India and is a product of Government Girls Senior Secondary School, Ramesh Nagar. “Indians need to talk and come out with solutions.

We need to bring out the best in our people,” said Khanna. “We need to give the marginalised the education and confidence to speak, not handicap them with reservation,” she said.

The YFE had called for online applications from interested candidates and received 223 resumes. “We rejected 117 applicants as they were below 25 years,” said Kaushal Mishra, president, YFE. “Out of 53 candidates, a core committee has short-listed three,” Mishra said.

The three candidates will now fight it out during an open debate to be held on Tuesday. “The debate will be open to the public and judged by a panel of experts,” said Mishra.

SP will support Pawar’s PM bid: Amar Singh

New Delhi, Feb 15, (ANI): Samajwadi Party (SP) General Secretary Amar Singh on Sunday met Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) chief Sharad Pawar at his residence here and declared that his party would support the Agriculture Minister’s bid to become India’s next Prime Minister after the elections.

Pawar’s party is a part of Democratic Front (DF) government in Maharashtra along with the Congress. His NCP is also part of the UPA coalition government at the Centre.

Amar Singh also added that the SP will seek an alliance with the Congress.

After the meeting Pawar is said to have consulted with senior leaders of his party, including Praful Patel, Deepti Tripathi and Tariq Anwar.

The SP and NCP have been demanding seats from Congress outside their home turfs of Uttar Pradesh and Maharashtra. The SP also wants to contest a few seats in Madhya Pradesh.

Sunday’s meeting took place after the NCP core committee met on Saturday and said that it was keen to have a grand alliance in Maharashtra, which would include the Samajwadi Party.

The meeting is being seen as an attempt to create a pressure group within the United Progressive Alliance (UPA).

The negotiating teams of the Congress and the NCP are expected to meet next week to discuss the seat-sharing formula for the elections. (ANI)
