Court reduces sentence for Jelena Dokic’s father

BELGRADE, Serbia — A Serbian court has reduced the prison sentence for tennis player Jelena Dokic’s father, who was convicted of threatening the Australian ambassador.

The court in Sremska Mitrovica said Tuesday it reduced Damir Dokic’s 15-month sentence to 12 months. Dokic could be out of prison in early May.

Dokic’s lawyer Bosiljka Djukic told The Associated Press she will push for her client’s release on parole before May.

The 51-year-old Dokic was arrested last year after reportedly saying he would blow up Australian ambassador Claire Birgin’s car because of articles in the Australian press in which Jelena Dokic accused him of beating her.

Upon arrest, police also found a large number of weapons in Dokic’s home.

Hazell scores 25 as Seton Hall beats Rutgers 76-70

NEWARK, N.J. — Jeremy Hazell scored 25 points to lead Seton Hall to a crucial 76-70 victory over intrastate rival Rutgers on Tuesday night.

It was the fourth win in the last five games for Seton Hall (16-10, 7-8 Big East), which is making a late-season push toward a possible NCAA Tournament berth.

The Pirates took control of the game early in the first half when they went on a 16-1 run over a 4:11 span to take a 28-10 lead with 11:40 left.

The Scarlet Knights (14-14, 4-11) made a late charge, cutting the lead to 68-64 with 2:36 left, but couldn’t get any closer.

After missing the last two games with a bruised right wrist, Eugene Harvey returned to action for the Pirates and added 10 points, while Jordan Theodore had 12 and Jeff Robinson chipped in 10.

Mike Rosario scored 17 points, including six in a 9-second span of the second half, and Johnathan Mitchell added 14 for Rutgers.

Kan. man sues Royals claiming hot dog injury

KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Baseball fans who sit six rows behind the third-base dugout at the Kansas City Royals’ stadium know they might have to duck a few foul balls.

But a Kansas man says it was a flying hot dog, not a baseball, that almost put his eye out last year.

John Coomer has filed a lawsuit against the Royals seeking more than $25,000 for injuries he sustained Sept. 8 when he was smacked in the eye with a hot dog chucked by the team’s mascot, Sluggerrr.

Coomer said the wayward wiener caused a detached retina and the development of cataracts in his left eye.

The Royals declined to comment Tuesday. The team is looking for someone new to wear the mascot’s large lion costume, spokesman Toby Cook says there’s “no connection” with the hot dog affair.

Coldplay, Satriani reach settlement over plagiarism row

Washington, September 16 (ANI): Coldplay has reportedly reached a legal settlement with guitarist Joe Satriani over a plagiarism lawsuit.

The band were served with a lawsuit by Satriani, who alleged the rockers lifted his 2004 instrumental, “I Just Wanna Fly,” for the basic melody of “Viva La Vida”.

Both the parties were said to have settled the matter, and copyright infringement lawsuit has been dismissed, reports Contactmusic.

According to Billboard.com, a confession of any wrongdoing will not be required from the group, who have always denied the claims.

A statement from the Brits said: “If there are any similarities between our two pieces of music, they are entirely coincidental, and just as surprising to us as to him.”

Both sides declined to comment about the settlement. (ANI)

Two Chinese writers pen ‘instant biography’ of Michael Jackson

New Delhi, July 6 (ANI): Two Chinese writers worked continuously for 48 hours to produce an “instant biography” of late King of Pop Michael Jackson.

The 130,000-word book, titled ‘Moonwalk in Paradise’, has been written by Jiang Xiaoyu and Xing Han, and published by Chinese publishing house Xiandai.

A story published by the China Youth Daily suggests that the two writers, who have never met Jackson, have simply written the story from their “accumulated knowledge about the king of pop,” reports the China Daily.

“Though it is hard to tell how big the market for instant books is in China, I am sure we have done a nice job on quickly responding to market needs,” said Zang Yongqing, the general editor of Xiandai.

Jiang, who has written blogs and reviews about the pop icon, said that he hoped his book would help Chinese fans find a better way to relieve their pain.

“I am not only a music critic but also a fan of the King of Pop, so I understand what fans really need,” he said.

However, Zhao Xin, a PhD student of literature at Beijing Normal University, said that “authenticity and accuracy” should be the cornerstones of a biography.

“The writers might infringe on copyright if they never had the chance to interact with the subject,” he said.

More than 10 Chinese publishing houses are also planning to launch instant books about Jackson. (ANI)

Rare Audrey Hepburn stamp to go on sale

London, May 26 (IANS) A rare stamp featuring actress Audrey Hepburn is set to go on sale in Germany, eight years after its entire print run had to be destroyed due to her son’s objections.

Contactmusic.com reports that the stamps were commissioned by the German government in 2001 as part of a collection featuring portraits of stars including Charlie Chaplin, Marilyn Monroe and Greta Garbo.

But Hepburn’s son, Sean Ferrer, objected to the photo of his late mother, which had been used on the stamp because it showed her with a cigarette holder dangling from her lips.

He refused to grant copyright and all of the stamps were destroyed apart from 30 advanced copies which were saved from destruction by a postal employee and now one of the only five surviving copies is set to go under the hammer in Berlin.

It has a reserve bid set at $41,959 (27,972 pounds).

Rare stamp of Hepburn smoking to go under the hammer in Berlin

London, May 26 (ANI): A rare stamp portraying film star Audrey Hepburn smoking is set to go on sale on Germany.

Eight years ago, the German government had ordered the stamp to be destroyed after Hepburn’s son, Sean Ferrer, objected to the cigarette holder dangling from her mouth and refused to grant copyright.

However, an anonymous collector today stands to make more than 26,000 pounds with the sale of the stamp, reports The Scotsman.

In 2001, the country’s government had printed 14 million of the stamps as part of a series featuring movie stars including Charlie Chaplin, Marilyn Monroe and Greta Garbo. Following Ferrer’s objection, the print run was destroyed.

However, the finance ministry had already delivered advance copies to Deutsche Post for approval, and 30 of the proof copies escaped destruction when an unknown employee pocketed them and used them to send letters postmarked from Berlin.

One of the rare stamps – one of only five surviving copies – is now set to go under the hammer in Berlin, Germany.

It has a reserve bid set at 27,972 pounds.

Hepburn died in 1993 at the age of 64.

Auctioneer Andreas Schlegel said: “We can only guess that whoever took the stamps didn’t realise their value and used them on normal letters.” (ANI)

Campaign against cyber crime in Kolkata

Kolkata, May 22 (ANI): In order to tackle cyber crime, the Kolkata police joined hands with the Public Relations Society of India, Kolkata Chapter and Calcutta Telephones and organised a workshop here to spread awareness about cyber security.

Cyber crime still remains a vague phenomenon for most Internet users, as they are not aware as to what actually constitutes cyber crime and what laws are against it.

Most cases of cyber crime also go unreported because of the strong inhibitions amongst Internet users especially children and teenagers.

“We have been planning to launch a city-wise movement from the next month where we will involve the professors, It specialists and everybody to fight the evil of cyber crime. A lot of campaigns do not reach us. Young children do not report crime relating to cyber. So we are going to start a huge awareness campaign,” said Gautam Mohan Chakravorty, Commissioner of Police, Kolkata.

There are incidents of tampering with pictures on the Internet, and other such incidents.

“This cyber crime whatever it is, hacking or pornography, it is because parents don’t give time to their children. The children do not know what is good or right,” said Deblina Choudhury, student.

Cyber crime is understood as a crime wherein a computer or network is used as a tool, target or source of crime. It consists of fraud, theft, blackmail, forgery, hacking, infringement of copyright, child pornography and so on.

There are hardly any statistics available on the increase in cyber crimes and the records are not reliable because net users, mostly teenagers and children, fail to report cyber crime.

As per reports three in four children online are willing to share personal information about themselves and their family in exchange for goods and services. And one in five children are argeted by a predator each year. (ANI)

Demi Moore sues Oz mag for printing unauthorised party pics

Melbourne, May 2 (ANI): Actress Demi Moore has filed a lawsuit against Australian publisher Pacific Magazines for printing unauthorised pictures of a private party hosted by her.

The ‘Flawless’ star was reportedly seeking unspecified damages in the case filed in Melbourne’s Federal Court over pictures taken at an Oscars bash in Los Angeles last year.

Moore alleged that New Idea, a weekly magazine, had breached the copyright after publishing unauthorised snaps of celebrities, including herself, daughter Rumer Willis, Diddy, and Cameron Diaz in its March edition, reports the Daily Telegraph.

Closed-door negotiations on whether a settlement in the case can be agreed upon were suggested to begin between her lawyers and the magazine next month.

It was predicted that the magazine would argue it bought the now disputed photos legally and was entitled to make use of them. (ANI)
