Motor racing-Alonso wins German GP in Ferrari one-two

July 25 (Reuters) – Fernando Alonso led Ferrari to a one-two finish in the German Grand Prix on Sunday after denying Brazilian team mate Felipe Massa an emotional victory one year on from a near-fatal crash. While Alonso celebrated his second triumph of the season, and 23rd of his career, it was accompanied by a whiff of controversy with Massa sent what sounded like a veiled message to allow the Spaniard to overtake on lap 49.

Germany’s Sebastian Vettel was third for Red Bull after starting on pole position. McLaren’s Lewis Hamilton was fourth to extend his overall championship lead to 14 points.

A little Pawar play

After having ducked the sniping from both the Congress and Opposition during the recent IPL controversy as well as the price rise debate in the prolonged Budget session, NCP leader Sharad Pawar went on a much needed vacation with his family to France. He also had to proceed to New Jersey to be chief guest at a Marathi cultural festival.

The cultural troupe which was to perform at the function was learnt to have found it difficult to arrange US visas in time. So Pawar intervened and the visas were processed at the earliest.

At home in Dubai, Sania trains with Malik for Big W

Sania Mirza is finding Dubai to be a home away from home. The other day she was training on the courts of an academy housed in a star hotel in the UAE metropolis when the temperature touched 41 degrees Celsius at 9.30 in the morning. By afternoon she got to hear that it was 45 degrees in Hyderabad. Just like at home, a few heads — mainly from Pakistanis and Indians — turn in her direction as she begins sparring with her hitting partner, Zeeshan Ali, the former India player.

“The last three weeks have been good with regard to training,” Sania told The Indian Express on Wednesday, while talking about her injured wrist that has kept her out of action since February. “My wrist has bothered me for the last two years. It is a chronic wrist injury but at the moment it is not hurting. I have been training in Dubai for the past nine days and it feels good,” Sania said.

Sania and her husband, Pakistan batsman, Shoaib Malik are busy setting up their house in Dubai. The couple whose marriage attracted controversy are now happy that the hullabaloo surrounding them has died down. Dubai is a neutral venue for both of them.

“Whatever happened just before our wedding was disturbing and difficult for both of us and for the families. When it was all over, I said to Shoaib ‘we have come through this. I think we can come through more things in my life rather easily now’. We both faced what people never face in their lives probably. We were not even married when all the controversy happened. It is great to be together. After all that happened, we are both back to being happy again and that really counts.”

Sania believes not much has changed since the wedding. “I have to get used to sharing my bathroom and bedroom,” she said jokingly. “Shoaib and I have been working out together. We play sports in which we have to be lean but also strong. It helps that we are from sporting backgrounds,” Sania added.

“Just yesterday, when we were watching a movie, we were telling each other that we can’t believe we are married. One good thing is that we never fight over watching soap operas or serial. I am not the ‘girly’ types so I watch sport and so does he.”

Good news came in the form of Malik’s name being in the probables list for the Asia Cup. The former Pakistan skipper is undergoing a one-year ban for ‘indiscipline’. “I have heard that things can change overnight in Pakistan cricket. I never used to follow Pakistan cricket earlier but now I do. Shoaib didn’t follow too much of women’s tennis but now he has no choice.”

Sania will kick-start her return with the event in Birmingham before heading to Wimbledon. “I didn’t take time off because I was getting married. I got married because I had time on my side due to my wrist injury. Somehow, people don’t understand that. Everyone goes through rough patches and Shoaib himself has had a roller-coaster year. He understands what it means to make a comeback after an injury.

“Grass is the most difficult surface to make a comeback, especially after a wrist injury, as the surface is uneven and one has to make lot of adjustments with the wrist. If I had a choice I would have made a comeback on a hard court. But that said I have played well on grass.”

Ranked 91 in singles and 75 in doubles, Sania knows that she’ll realise how match fit she is only after playing a couple of games. “I am not going in hoping to make the quarterfinal of Wimbledon. It is not going to be that easy. It doesn’t work like that. I want to get on court and play a few matches. And then we will see.”

Afridi wants quick and ‘decisive’ action in match fixing controversy

Karachi, May 21 (ANI): Pakistan T20 skipper Shahid Afridi believes that the uncertainty surrounding players’ involvement in match fixing during the winless Australia tour is adversely effecting the team’s focus, and has asked the concerned authorities to take ‘decisive action’ over the issue soon.

Afridi said the controversy is damaging for players keeping in view that they have to compete in some important tournaments in the coming months, including the 2011 World Cup.

“The thing is that there is too much uncertainty because of all those allegations regarding match-fixing. It’s really damaging for the players and the team and I’m really concerned because it comes at a time when we are looking forward to a very busy calendar filled with major assignments, including the all-important World Cup,” The News quoted Afridi, as saying.

“We will be playing in the World Cup just nine months from now and it’s hardly the sort of situation you need to prepare for such a huge event,” he added.

The suspicion of match fixing involving some of the key players, particularly wicket keeper Kamran Akmal spiralled after a video tape was leaked to the media, which showed players and some of the former team officials raising questions over the performance of the team during the disastrous Australia tour while testifying before an inquiry committee set up by the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB).

The leaked footage also showed Afridi raising suspicions of match fixing.

Afridi, however, refused to make any statement about the video, and urged the concerned authorities to resolve the issue as soon as possible so that players could concentrate on the game more.

“I think that for our team to move on, we need to quickly resolve all such controversies. You can’t expect the players to give their best when there are so many allegations thrown at them,” the flamboyant cricketer said. (ANI)

Pak civilian arrested in Chile denies illegal possession of explosives

Santiago, May 20 (ANI): Saifur Rehman Khan, the Pakistani civilian who was detained after traces of explosives were detected on him at the US Embassy in Chile, has denied all charges being labelled against him.

Saifur, who was released after charges of illegal possession of explosives were labelled against him, appealed to the US authorities to trust him, saying he was not involved in any wrongdoing.

“I have friends and family in the US and more than anyone I want America to be safe and secure. I have been to the US and I greatly admire the American values of truth, justice and freedom,” a statement released by him stated.

“As my defence pleaded, the panic appears to have stemmed from a false alarm… Please, have your trust in me. I have no knowledge of any substance that can cause harm to anyone. I wish the perpetrators of violence are caught,” The Daily Times quoted Saifur, as saying.

Saifur described the whole controversy as part of a ‘big misunderstanding’, which was could have been a result of some kind of ‘mistaken identity.’

Traces of Tetryl, a compound used as a booster to help detonate explosives, was found on documents and the mobile phone recovered from Saifur, while he was trying to enter the US Embassy in Chile. (ANI)

England 2018 bid gets support from Platini and FIFA’s vice-president

London, May 19 (ANI): UEFA president Michel Platini and FIFA vice-president Jack Warner have given a boost to England’s troubled 2018 World Cup bid.

FIFA’s ethics committee are investigating claims made by Lord Triesman that Spain would support Russia’s bid for the 2018 World Cup in return for help bribing referees in South Africa.

Triesman has resigned following publication of a recording of the comments, made secretly during a conversation with a friend, The Mirror reports.

Platini said the row may have damaged England’s bid, but insisted it can recover, and believes Triesman deserves support.

The UEFA president said: “I have a good friendship with Lord Triesman and I want to help him in his bad moment, for him as a person. I want to support my friend in this big problem. I think it is a bad thing that happened to him.”

Platini said the controversy could have harmed England’s bid but under Triesman’s successor Geoff Thompson, a UEFA and FIFA vice-president, the campaign could recover before the vote by FIFA’s executive committee is taken on December 2.

Asked if the bid had been damaged, Platini said: “Maybe yes, I think you need the people who vote on your side. But for the bid Geoff Thompson is a good guy, England is a great country and of course it can recover and survive this.”

Meanwhile, Warner said the FA’s swift action had limited any damage, The Mirror reports.

“It’s unfortunate but the English FA dealt with it appropriately and quickly and therefore I don’t believe there’ll be too much negative reaction from it,” Warner told Bloomberg. (ANI)

Leaked tape reveals match-fixing allegations made by Pak coaches against Akmal

Lahore, May 19 (ANI): Days after the Pakistan Cricket Board’s inquiry commission’s report over the national team’s disastrous Australia tour was leaked to the media, video footage of a hearing of the commission, which shows former team coaches Intikhab Alam and Aaqib Javed suspecting wicket keeper Kamran Akmal of being involved in match-fixing, has emerged.

The video, which is said to have been deliberately leaked by some of PCB officials, shows Alam and Javed alleging that they suspected that Akmal’s shoddy performance throughout the tour was intentional, The Daily Times reports.

Kamran had dropped four catches in the Sydney Test, including three off middle order batsman Mike Hussey, after which he went on to make a century to help his team register a remarkable win in the Test match, in which the visitors were in commanding position right from the first innings.

“I have reservations over the way he missed the run out. When I saw it I couldn’t believe it. How he could miss such a big run out? I can’t say 100 percent that there is match-fixing, but I have my strong suspicions,” the video shows Javed, as saying.

“I know all about it because I was a victim of it. In 1998, I presented evidence against players but the judge who was hearing the inquiry ended the matter,” he added.

“I was flabbergasted when Kamran missed the run out. I have serious doubts about him. I have heard stories about match-fixing,” said Alam.

The video has stirred a fresh controversy in Pakistan cricket, which already has been facing myriad troubles over the past few years. (ANI)

Miley Cyrus’ beau defends her pole dancing video

London, May 18 (ANI): Liam Hemsworth has come to the defence of girlfriend Miley Cyrus over a saucy video, insisting that she “has a good head on her shoulders”.

The teenage sensation, who shot to fame with her role in Disney’s Hannah Montana series, was seen in a raunchy video, showing her dirty dancing with a movie producer.

Miley has been dating the Australian actor since they met on the set of their film ‘The Last Song’.

And last week, a video from the movie”s wrap party sparked controversy, with footage of Cyrus showing her grinding up against a 44-year-old producer on the dance floor.

However, Hemsworth has insisted that his girlfriend shouldn”t let the media storm bother her, because the criticism is all part of being a star.

“Everyone gets criticism, it”s kind of what comes with this job… everybody”s trying to bring you down. She”s got a good head on her shoulders. She”s a great girl,” the Daily Express quoted him as telling Hollywoodlife.com. (ANI)

‘Don’t want Schumacher’s tainted legacy’

Lewis Hamilton says he wants to be remembered as a Formula One great, but not in the manner of Michael Schumacher. The 25-year-old Briton entered the sport the year after seven-time champion Schumacher retired from Ferrari in 2006, and this weekend is the first time the two have raced each other around the streets of Monaco.

The German’s comeback with Mercedes, at the age of 41, has revived memories of his last appearance in Monaco when he was sent to the back of the starting grid for blocking the track in qualifying to secure pole. That controversy was one of several to have dogged Schumacher’s career despite his status as the most successful driver the sport has ever seen, with 91 wins.

Hamilton, the 2008 world champion with McLaren, said he would hate to walk away from the sport with his reputation similarly ‘tainted’.

“When I leave F1 I want to be remembered as one of the best drivers of all time,” he said. “I am not really bothered if I am remembered or not. But clearly I am going to be remembered. I am part of the sport, I’m part of its history, I am a world champion,” he added.

“I think as I am going to be anyway, I would like to be remembered in the best way and the best light,” added the driver, who was himself embroiled in a furore over lying to race stewards last season.

“For me, when I think about the history it is not just about me, it is about how my family raised me, and where we came from. For that to be potentially tainted by something like that (Schumacher’s Monaco controversy) would be really devastating for me. That is definitely something I don’t want to be remembered for.”

Hamilton refused to be drawn into a judgement on what Schumacher did last time around, however.

Chaos at Wikipedia in wake of porn purging activity

Washington, May 15 (ANI): A massive re-organization appears to be taking place at Wikipedia, as co-founder Jimmy Wales has relinquished his top-level control over the encyclopaedia”s content, as well as all of its parent company”s projects.

The shake-up followed the growing controversy surrounding pornographic images that appear on the online encyclopaedia.

Despite remaining the President of the organisation, Wales can no longer delete files, remove administrators, assign projects or edit any content – he has been brought down to a low-level administrator.

“He had the highest level of control, he was our leader,” Fox News quoted a source as saying, who also said that there was total chaos and no one was in-charge for the moment.

Wales had personally deleted many of the images from Wikimedia”s servers, and that he”d ordered that thousands more be purged. Now many of those images have been restored to their original web pages.

Recently, a fiery debate has been surrounding the issue, concerning whether the images are really pornographic or not, and whether they should be deleted.

One lengthy e-mail response read in part:

“In essence, right now Jimbo is deleting things based on his singular judgment about what should be allowed…. This is a large change and lack of a clear policy creates a very confusing and frustrating environment for editors. (Multiple Commons admins have already stated their intention to resign and/or retire over this.)”

But Wales’ act of defending his actions only invited further trouble.

One administrator wrote, “If this is an emergency situation requiring a justified, immediate, unilateral, king-like massive action, I regret Mr. Wales didn”t take the time to explain the emergency to us.

“By rush-imposing his views and decisions on people who are not out of the debate yet, he is browbeating their inner self, ignoring their beliefs and opinions, discarding the value of the Other.

“This lack of respect and of equality of vote should be extremely well argumented and the reasons transparently communicated. Otherwise, trust, faith and adhesion to the [Wikimedia Foundation] values dissolve. I don”t think we should let this happen. Mr. Wales, I hope you enter reason and dialogue realms again….”

By Thursday, the discussion had devolved into an all-out war pitting board members against board members, and with top leadership sparring with lower level administrators. (ANI)

Miley Cyrus did lap dance ‘for fun’, says dad

New York, May 14 (ANI): Father of teen sensation Miley Cyrus, Billy Ray insists that his daughter was just ‘having fun’ in the video that shows her giving a lap dance to a 44-year-old man.

“It”s what people her age do,” The New York Post quoted Billy Ray Cyrus as telling TMZ.com.

The video sparked controversy, showing the singer and actress engaging in some dirty dancing with Adam Shankman, who is openly gay, during the wrap party last summer for her movie, “The Last Song.”

Shankman, now 45 years old, produced “The Last Song” and is a judge on the dance competition and reality television show “So You Think You Can Dance?” (ANI)

US teacher accused of ignoring pupils engaged in oral sex in packed classroom

Melbourne, May 13 (ANI): California school authorities are looking into an incident where a teacher allegedly ignored two students engaged in oral sex in a packed classroom.

According to US TV channel KTLA, the incident involving an eighth-grade boy and a seventh-grade girl took place at Haydock Intermediate School in Oxnard, California, when students were watching a film, reports News.com.au.

The two students allegedly involved in the controversy are still attending the school. (ANI)

Capello defers plans to rate England players as part of an online business venture

London, May 12 (ANI): The Football Association (FA) has forced England manager Fabio Capello into postponing plans to rate his players as part of an online business venture.

The development came as Capello named the 30 players who will depart for a pre-tournament training camp in Austria in a week”s time.

The Italian refused to answer questions on the controversial Capello Index ratings scheme.

The Sun quoted him, as saying: “I think this, for me, is a press conference about these players. I read what you wrote. I prefer not to comment. I know what you have to do. We decided what we have to do. That”s it, finished, from me.”

FA director of communications Adrian Bevington was forced to intervene when it was pointed out that postponing the scheme was only delaying the potential clash of interest to a future date.

Bevington said: “We are committed to Fabio Capello after the World Cup.

“We had to remove any controversy about the World Cup. We”ve done that for a few months,” he added. (ANI)

Witness brain scan doesn’t help

London, May 12 (ANI): Monitoring brain activity of witnesses reveals no more than what they say they remember, a study has shown.

The study by Jesse Rissman and his team at Stanford University in California comes amid controversy over whether to admit functional MRI scans as evidence in US courts.

As part of their research, the team asked 16 volunteers to view 200 mugshots, reports New Scientist.

An hour later, they were again shown pictures of faces, some of which they had seen before and others that were new.

The researchers recorded fMRI scans of the volunteers” brains as they reported which faces they recognised.

While the brain scans matched the volunteers” decisions on whether the faces were familiar, they could not predict if the recollection was accurate.

The team also don”t know how easily a witness could cheat the system: remembering a recent event or fabricating a lie may look the same to the scanner.

The study has been published in the Journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences. (ANI)

Laura Bush found stay at White House ‘stressful’, felt relieved to be out

Washington, May 10 (ANI): Former US First Lady Laura Bush says that her post-White House days have been quite liberating. The Bush family have had to weather many a storm at the White House, the biggest of them being the 9/11 attacks.

She elaborates the feeling of relief she felt upon moving out of the White House in her forthrightly written new book aptly titled, “Spoken From the Heart”.

“I didn’t really realize how stressed we were and how vigilant we were — that hypervigilance — until we came home and I wasn’t so stressed anymore,” she said in an interview with Politico.

“It was just something that we lived with every single day. We were used to it, and we didn’t really know we were. I almost stood straighter, just without that weight of worry,” she added.

The First Lady steers clear of controversy on subjects related to her husband’s presidential term, firmly maintaining that she “definitely” does not believe someone lied to her husband about the embarrassing ‘weapons of mass destruction’ in Iran that led US on a wild-goose chase.

She also spoke about the conception of her husband’s forthcoming memoir, “Decision Points”.

“It’s great to be able to sit back, to look at the photos, to look at the schedules, to look again at the briefing papers — which is what I did when I worked on mine,” she said.

“His researcher would find things that he thought might interest me, I put in a couple of stories in my book, and when George would read them, read those chapters, he’d say: ‘Take those out — those are my stories.’ So I did. And they were his stories. They were things that happened to him that I was going to recount. So we each got to keep our own stories for our books,” she recollects fondly.

She goes on to talk about an amusing incident that took place during her days as First Lady of Texas, “I went to Walmart with [my daughters] Barbara and Jenna, and we were waiting in line to check out, and the woman kept staring at me. And finally she said, ‘I think I know you.’ And I said, ‘Well, I’m Laura Bush,’ expecting her to say, ‘Oh, yes, the governor’s wife.’ And, instead, she said, ‘No, guess not.’”

Talking about the loss of a suitcase while at the White House , she says, “I had a luncheon speech in Arizona, and so I dressed for the plane in a very casual way, and then my bag did not get on the plane. So when we landed and we realized we didn’t have it, we rushed to a store and bought an outfit as fast as we could. And we went to a luncheon in an outfit that we had just purchased. But, anyway, we felt pretty good that we had spent some money in that economy.” (ANI)

Sarah Ferguson in £20K legal battle

London, May 10 (ANI): Sarah Ferguson is facing a 20,000-pound lawsuit for failing to stop a controversial book from hitting bookstores.

Journalist Chris Rogers interviewed Ferguson for Under Cover, a book about orphanages, and the royal had even planned to write the tome”s preface, based on her experience at a Turkish orphanage for a TV documentary in 2009.

However, her expose triggered controversy when Turkish officials demanded Ferguson”s extradition for violating laws by filming minors at the home, and the royal filed legal documents to try and stall the publication of Rogers” book, reports the Daily Star.

Rogers and Ferguson made an out-of-court settlement last December, but her lawyers apparently did not lodge the necessary paperwork in London”s High Court.

Now Rogers has submitted a bid to recoup his legal fees and court costs, reports the Mail on Sunday. (ANI)

Uproar in Parliament over Trinamool leader Bandopadhyay”s remarks

New Delhi, May 5 (ANI): Opposition members on Wednesday forced an adjournment of proceedings in the Lok Sabha till 2 p.m, raising several issues, including Trinamool leader Sudip Bandopadhyay”s remarks against a CPI-M member and the controversy surrounding 2G spectrum bids.

Soon after Speaker Meira Kumar called for Question Hour, Left members rushed to the well and started demanding an apology from Trinamool Congress member Sudip Bandopadhyay for his remarks against CPI(M) member Basudeb Acharia.

Kumar”s repeated appeals to allow Question Hour to continue went unheeded even as members from the Treasury benches waved the agenda papers demanding that the House functions properly.

AIADMK members also stormed into the well waving copies of a newspaper that carried reports on the controversy surrounding 2G spectrum bids.

They demanded resignation of Communications Minister and DMK leader A Raja.

DMK sources have ruled out the possibility of Raja resigning.

Sources said Raja has emerged as the Dalit face of the DMK and enjoys a good rapport with Karunanidhi.

Though Raja is embroiled in two major allegations — the spectrum allotment — and his alleged telephone call to a Madras High Court judge for a favourable order– Karunanidhi has been defending him. (ANI)

Row looms over Snowy licence review

A Snowy River action group in the New South Wales South East says it plans to take legal action over the five year review of the Snowy Hydro water licence.

Amendments took affect at the weekend, but the review has attracted controversy regarding a lack of co-operation between the New South Wales government, and the Victorian and Commonwealth governments.

Changes include additional flows into Tantangara Dam and the provision of more public information about Snowy Hydro operations.

There are no changes to the controversial Mowamba aqueduct, which The Snowy River Alliance says threatens the health of the river.

The Alliance’s Chairman, John Gallard, says the group wants to take action against the State Government.

“They haven’t followed their own statute law,” he said.

“They have not complied with sections of the Snowy Hydro Corporatisation Act 1997, which are required to be fulfilled before the licence review can take place.”

Uproar in Parliament over 2G spectrum, Mumbai motormen strike

New Delhi, May 4 (ANI): Opposition members on Tuesday forced an adjournment of proceedings in the Lok Sabha, raising several issues, including the ongoing Mumbai motormen strike and the controversy surrounding 2G spectrum bids.

Shiv Sena members trooped into the well flashing placards ”Mumbai comes to a grinding halt” and sought to raise the issue of the motormen strike.

AIADMK members also stormed into the well waving copies of a newspaper that carried reports on the spectrum scam.

They demanded resignation of Communications Minister and DMK leader A Raja.

With members unrelenting, the Speaker asked Home Minister P Chidambaram, who was replying to a question, to take his seat as nothing could be heard amid the din and adjourned the proceedings till noon.

The opposition uproar continued after the session resumed.

DMK sources have ruled out the possibility of Raja resigning.

Sources said Raja has emerged as the Dalit face of the DMK and enjoys a good rapport with Karunanidhi.

Though Raja is embroiled in two major allegations — the spectrum allotment — and his alleged telephone call to a Madras High Court judge for a favourable order Karunanidhi has remained soft on him. (ANI)
