Spanish flair will last forever, says Del Bosque

(Reuters) – Spain’s creative passing game and flair will continue to dominate world soccer, coach Vicente del Bosque said after his team clinched their first World Cup with a rugged 1-0 win over Netherlands on Sunday.

The game may have been anything but elegant with 13 yellow cards and one red card for Dutchman John Heitinga, but Del Bosque said Spain had been true to their nature and played with flair throughout the tournament.

“I think our effort, our flair … is never ending, that will last forever. We have excellent players in this squad and they demonstrate that every time they go on the pitch,” Del Bosque told reporters.

“Netherlands played a good game. I mean, yes, it was rough but that is part of football. I think in this final we saw offensive football. Both sides were pressing.”

Andres Iniesta grabbed the winner for Spain four minutes from the end of extra time as the game edged toward penalties with Netherlands reduced to 10 men after Heitinga was sent off with a second booking in the first half of extra time.

The Spaniards made few changes from their 2008 Euro Championship triumph and when Del Bosque took over after that win he made sure his players knew he was determined to follow the line set by his predecessor Luis Aragones.

“This World Cup title does draw from what we did in 2008,” he said.

“It is the continuity and continuation of players who were on that squad. We have a very good legacy and tried to respect that legacy.

“We simply followed on the lines of what was done back then. We only brought some players in to the squad to refresh it,” said Del Bosque.

BCCI puts Team India sponsorship up for grabs

With its deal with Sahara coming to an end next month, the BCCI on Monday invited bids from companies through a tender notice for sponsoring four Indian squads, including the much sought-after men’s outfit.

The tender notice, issued by BCCI secretary N Srinivasan, called for firms to bid for sponsorship of the men’s, women’s, India A and India under 19 teams, indicating the documents would be available from May 24 for a non-refundable payment of Rs 5 lakh.

It said all bidders need to fulfill the eligibility criteria set up by the Board as well as other requirements as mentioned in the bid document.

Submission of the bids also has to be done as per conditions outlined, the Board also reserved its rights “to cancel or amend the entire bidding process at any stage and to reject any and/or all bids without providing any reasons, including calling for a re-tender.”

BCCI’s deal with existing sponsors Sahara is set to come to a close next month.

Sahara, which has supported the Indian team for several years as its main sponsor, recently bid successfully for the new Pune IPL franchise for a staggering Rs 1700 crore.

Sahara will review its sponsorship to the Indian cricket team, Group chief Subroto Roy had said after winning the IPL franchise bid on March 23.

Sahara had bagged the sponsorship for the Indian cricket team for Rs 400 crore for a four-year period ending December 2009, and had agreed to continue for six more months as BCCI could not find any sponsors.

“No, it will not. Only thing we will see is our continuation of sponsorship to the Indian cricket team. We will sit on that and we will discuss on that. But on all other sports nothing will be affected,” Roy had said on the impact of the Group’s aggressive bidding to acquire the IPL’s Pune franchise.

Asserting that the Group, which is also sponsoring the Indian hockey team, would seriously consider (limiting) exposure to the BCCI and the women’s cricket, he said then that the Group “will take a conscious decision about it.”

Vettori confident about New Zealand facing must-wins

Barbados (West Indies), May 8 (ANI): New Zealand is suddenly facing the prospect of having to win four consecutive matches if they are to claim the Twenty20 cricket World Cup.

Having lost to South Africa in their first Super Eights match in Barbados yesterday means New Zealand must win their final two group matches – against Pakistan tomorrow morning and England on Tuesday – to be assured of a semi-finals spot.

Skipper Daniel Vettori believes his side has the quality to take on Pakistan at the Kensington Oval tomorrow.

“We weren”t as good as we normally are. It”s a very small ground and when you”ve got a destructive hitter like Albie Morkel, it”s a bad combination if you miss. I think if we reflect back on it, those last five overs put us in a bit of trouble, but we fought pretty hard,” the New Zealand Herald and stuff.co.nz quoted Vettori, as saying.

“If we could do anything again, it would be doing that better,” he added.

He expressed confidence about New Zealand turning things around for the two “must-win” Super Eights games.

“We”re hoping for a quick turnaround from some of the guy”s performances and the continuation of some guys who bowled really well. It”s hard to know exactly what turns it around but I think guys adapt pretty quickly and hopefully with one game out here we”ll be better for it in the next game against Pakistan,” Vettori said. New Delhi, Mar 29 (ANI): The Supreme Court on Monday dismissed a petition filed by the Republican Party of India (RPI) leader Ramdas Athawale, saying the first meeting of Parliament each year could not be necessarily considered as its first session.

Athawale had challenged Lok Sabha Speaker”s decision to treat the first meeting of the House in January 2004 as the continuation of the winter session, which was adjourned sine die on December 23, 2003.

The RPI leader in his petition had challenged that despite the winter session being adjourned, it could not be termed as continuation when it met again in the New Year in the month of January.

He had contended that the meeting of the House for the first time in each year has to be considered as the first sitting of Parliament requiring the address by the President to both the Houses.

The government had then opposing the petition contended that there was no substance in it as the Speaker had then itself decided the issue by citing case laws. (ANI)

UML says PM’s India visit a success

Kathmandu, Aug 24 (ANI): The CPN (UML) has stated that the five-day official visit of Prime Minister Madhav Kumar Nepal to India was “successful and fruitful.”

The Standing Committee meeting of UML held at the party’s central office on Sunday said that the visit was successful and thanked the Prime Minister after he briefed the committee over the highlights of his visit.

Meanwhile, former Foreign Minister and Chairman of Madheshi Janadhikar Forum (MJF) Upendra Yadav, has said that Madhav Kumar Nepal’s recently concluded India visit was just a continuation and that it failed to attain any achievements.

Kantipur quoted him as, saying that Madhav Kumar Nepal’s India visit failed to accomplish tasks of national interest.

He also said that Foreign Minister Sujata Koirala’s decision to back out of the trip at the last moment was against the spirit of diplomatic norms.

“It’s an extreme mistake in part of Foreign Minister to back out of India tour after sending in the name list of Prime Minister’s entourage” he added.

However, during the visit both India and Nepal included a new trade treaty and agreement to control unauthorized trade, particularly from a third country.

The treaty is aimed at widening the bilateral economic engagements.

The new agreement will replace the existing arrangements since 1991, which was extended from time to time.

The trade treaty, which has been under negotiation for the last two years, aims at enlarging the scope of the existing institutional framework. As per the treaty India gives duty-free access to its market to goods manufactured in Nepal. (ANI)

Victory in Afghanistan similar to pornography: Holbrooke

Washington, Aug.13 (ANI): While US troops involved in an intense battle against the Taliban and Al-Qaeda in Afghanistan, President Obama’s Special Representative for Afghanistan and Pakistan, Richard Holbrooke, has compared success in Afghanistan to pornography.

Addressing a panel at the St. Regis Hotel, Holbrooke was asked about his views over how he sees victory in Afghanistan, and the continuation of drone strikes against Al-Qaeda and other outlawed outfits in the region, The Washington Independent reports.

Holbrooke replied: “The U.S. had to be ‘clear about what our national interests are’ ultimately, success would require taking a ‘Supreme Court test’, we’ll know it when we see it.”

Holbrooke’s statement was quite similar to what Justice Potter Stewart had once said while explaining pornography.

In 1964, Justice Stewart tried to explain ‘hard-core’ pornography, or what is obscene, by saying: “I shall not today attempt further to define the kinds of material I understand to be embraced, but I know it when I see it.” (ANI)
