Amelle Berrabah ‘quits’ Sugababes

London, September 19 (ANI): Singer Amelle Berrabah has quit the all-girl band Sugababes, it has emerged.

The beauty was apparently unhappy after a row with bandmate Keisha Buchanan.

“Amelle has been desperately unhappy for a while. She was going to try and resolve things, but it must have got too much for her. They haven’t been able to overcome their row,” the Sun quoted a source as saying.

Last week her family had even called cops fearing that she was kidnapped when she locked herself away in her North London home after the argument with Keisha.

Meanwhile, 21-year-old Eurovision contestant Jade Ewen is reportedly set to replace Amelle.

The insider revealed: “Jade is ready to replace Amelle. She is going to be shooting a video with them in Los Angeles on Monday.” (ANI)

Kelly Osbourne blames her DNA for drug addiction

Washington, Sept 10 (ANI): ‘Dancing with the Stars’ contestant Kelly Osbourne has blamed her genes for her drug addiction.

Kelly’s father, rockstar Ozzy Osbourne, has had a long struggle with drugs, which makes her believe her DNA was pre-programmed to make her an addict.

Contactmusic quoted Kelly as telling BBC Radio 5 Live: “I don’t have any shadow of a doubt that addiction is a disease. It is in your genes.

“The only people in my family who don’t have that gene are my mother and my sister Amy.

“I consider myself lucky that I saw both sides of it. Drugs stop you from screaming on the outside, but you are still screaming on the inside.

“I was addicted by 16. Drugs stopped me from feeling a certain way. Some people experience euphoria but I never felt that. They numbed me and gave me confidence.

It was like a magic medicine.”

The 24-year-old Kelly has been in rehab four times and is presently drug free. (ANI)

Former ‘Strictly Come Dancing’ contestant Kelly recently revealed her secret to keep their passion alive between the two.

She said: “I make sure he is still interested by giving him really good sex.” (ANI)

Toronto (Canada), Aug.19 (ANI): Defying all odds and unfavourable conditions, a Pakistani beauty queen is competing in the world’s fifth largest beauty pageant- Miss Tourism Queen International 2009 being held in Shanghai.

Ayesha Gilani, who hails from Lahore, is in Shanghai to compete with other 81 beauties from around the world.

After Shilpa, another Indian contestant racially bullied in Big Brother

London, Jul 10 (ANI): Reality television show ‘Big Brother’ is in hot water once again, as watchdog Ofcom has received almost 300 complaints that Marcus Akin racially bullied Indian contender Sree Dasari.

Ofcom has said that it would be looking into viewers’ concerns about the 35-year-old window fitter imitating former housemate Sree’s Indian accent.

The complaints were mostly about a row between Marcus and Sree, in which Akin, who threatened 25-year-old Sree, received a telling off from Big Brother and a formal warning.

Viewers also complained about a separate incident earlier in the day, when Marcus mimicked Sree’s accent while completing the shopping list.

“Big Brother intervened and took immediate and appropriate action relating to the argument between Sree and Marcus,” the Sun quoted a spokesman for the show as saying.

“Marcus received a formal warning following his use of threatening language during his argument with Sree.

“Threatening language and behaviour is not acceptable in the Big Brother house.

“Big Brother monitors the welfare, language and behaviour of housemates at all times and will continue to monitor this situation,” he added. (ANI)

Indian BB inhabitant Sree Dasari scared by housemates’ terrifying prank

Washington, June 27 (ANI): The Indian ‘Big Brother’ inhabitant Sree Dasari was scared out of his wits when other housemates played a terrifying prank on him in the night.

‘Big Brother’ contestant Karly hid underneath Sree’s bed in an attempt to scare the naive student.

Sree, 25, was chatting with Rodrigo in the lounge room when lesbian Lisa and glamour model Karly huddled in the bedroom, as they had plotted a trick to scare him.

Karly removed the drawer from Sree’s bed and crawled underneath and lay waiting, while Lisa, 41, switched off the lights and told all other housemates to act as if they were sleeping.

Later, Sree fumbled his way through the dark room towards his bed, and just when he got there, Karly, 21, jumped out and grabbed his hand.

Sree started jumping and screaming profanities, but he quickly saw the funny side of the joke, and started giggling uncontrollably.

“Oh s**t. Feel my heart! It’s beating so fast! F***ing hell,” Contactmusic quoted him as saying. (ANI)

New York, June 19 (ANI): Heidi Montag and Spencer Pratt-the reel life-turned-real life couple on ‘The Hills’-have said that they want Heidi’s sister Holly to get into a relationship with fellow ‘I’m a Celebrity…Get Me Out Of Here’ contestant Sanjaya Malakar.

Spencer and Heidi, who like to call themselves “Speidi”, have said that they want the duo to take their flirting to the next level.

“Her and Sanjaya are going to be the biggest couple. They are going to be Sanjolly!” the New York Daily News quoted Heidi as telling MTV News.

The friendship between the ‘Hills’ star and former ‘American Idol’ contestant has grown more flirtatious on the reality survival show within the past week.

Spencer has wished the new reality couple all the best, and said that he’d like to see them take their romance from the jungle to real life.

However, Montag, along with reality TV stalwart Janice Dickenson, was voted off the show Thursday night.

“I’ve actually been praying nonstop that they get married, and I can actually have a brother-in-law named Sanjaya, and I can go to India and hang out, Speidi and Sanjolly are going to Bollywood!” said Pratt. (ANI)

Cybersquatters hoping to cash in on Susan Boyle’s popularity

London, May 28 (ANI): Scottish singing sensation Susan Boyle is being targeted by cybersquatters, who want to make money from the global interest in Britain’s Got Talent’s contestant.

Boyle is among 33 of the 40 talent show contestants, who have had their domain names registered unofficially and fake Twitter accounts created by web savvy fans keen to cash in on their popularity.

The cybersquatters have snapped up a host of potentially valuable web addresses, such as susanboyle.co.uk, susanboyle.org and susan-boyle.com.

An American artist with the same name is also making the most of the singer’s fame – Susan K. Boyle from Texas is offering her domain name for a mere 25,000 dollars.

Sedo, the company marketing susanboyle.com, said the price was likely to have been set by the domain owner.

“Names like this are not really something we would recommend,” Sky News quoted director of business development Nora Nanayakkara as saying.

“The value of it really depends on the sustainability of Susan Boyle’s popularity and whether she’s just a one hit wonder,” Nanayakkara added.

Meanwhile, fan site susanboyle.co.uk is directing visitors to betting and bingo sites and seven Twitter users are pretending to be Boyle.

Nominet, the company responsible for.co.uk addresses, registers 50,000 domains a month and receives 50 complaints about the unfair use of domains.

Senior legal adviser Nick Wenban-Smith said: “The idea of offering a domain for sale has tended to die out. The most common use has been with words and brand names which attract a lot of internet traffic.” (ANI)

Soon, vehicles that drive on their own

Washington, May 27 (ANI): Ever imagined reading a book or watching a movie in your car, while your vehicle guides itself through the traffic and navigates on its own? Well, thanks to a new technology called ‘autonomous vehicle navigation’, this could soon be a reality.

If this technology comes into action, it may also see fleets of self-navigating vehicles for the military operating in war zones.

Keeping this in mind, a Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) contest was conducted, which aimed at spurring the development of such technologies.

The DARPA Urban Challenge was held at a former air force base in Victorville, Calif. in late 2007, and offered a 3.5 million dollars purse to competitors who could design the fastest and safest vehicles that could traverse a 60-mile urban course in moving traffic in less than six hours.

The contestant vehicles were unmanned and had to complete a simulated military supply mission, manoeuvring through a mock city environment, avoiding obstacles, merging into moving traffic, navigating traffic circles, and negotiating intersections-all while conforming to California driving rules.

And out of the 89 international teams participating in the contest, only six could make it to the finish line in the allotted time.

The winning vehicle, which finished with the fastest time- an average speed of approximately 13 miles per hour- had Wende Zhang of General Motors as part of its design team.

The GM team incorporated existing technology already offered in some of their vehicles that can assist in parking or detect lane markers and trigger alarms if the drivers are coming too close to the shoulder of the road.

And for the DARPA challenge, they developed a more sophisticated package of sensors that included GPS coupled with a camera and a laser-ranging LIDAR system to guide and correct the vehicle’s route through the city.

In Baltimore, Zhang will present GM’s patented new methods for detecting lanes and correcting a vehicle’s route, which helped them win the challenge.

However, Zhang said that a commercially viable autonomous driving product might still take a decade to hit the markets.

The findings were presented at the 2009 Conference on Lasers and Electro-Optics/International Quantum Electronics Conference (CLEO/IQEC) at the Baltimore Convention Center in Baltimore. (ANI)

Susan Boyle set for jungle show ‘I’m A Celebrity… Get Me Out Of Here’

London, May 4 (ANI): Britain’s Got Talent’s singing sensation Susan Boyle has been lined up for an appearance on the jungle show ‘I’m A Celebrity… Get Me Out Of Here’ later this year.

ITV bosses are looking into capitalising on the 48-year-old Scottish singer’s worldwide fame, and she has been chosen for a starring role in the hit reality show after hosts Ant and Dec, both 33, put her name forward.

Bosses reckon Boyle would be perfect in the Aussie Outback and would pull in bumper ratings as millions of her fans tune in to watch her antics.

And her global success, particularly in the States, could also widen the show’s appeal and attract millions of viewers in America and Australia.

“Susan would be TV gold if she went in the jungle. She’s the biggest celebrity of the year so far,” the Daily Star quoted a show source as saying.

“I don’t think there’s anyone in the country who doesn’t know who she is.

“Having her in the jungle would be a massive boost, not to mention helping us attract audiences from around the world.

“Every one of those millions of people who logged on to the web to see her would go to our website to see what she’s doing. If we sold advertising on the clips it’d be worth a fortune,” the source stated.

But it is not just the prospect of millions in revenue that is making Boyle such a popular choice for a spot, as telly bosses think she would be a brilliant contestant in the outback.

“Susan has got a great sense of humour which would be great to have in the jungle,” the source said.

“There’s such a fascination in what she’s like and how she acts that I think not only would she do well, she could actually win.

“The British public love someone who is bonkers and funny. I think they would easily fall in love with her straight away,” the source added. (ANI)

Berlusconi’s wife wins the battle against his ‘babes’

London, Apr 30 (ANI): Silvio Berlusconi’s wife seems to have won the battle against Italian prime minister’s eye for attractive young women.

His party has decided not to promote the four starlets Berlusconi recommended as candidates for the European Parliament.

Veronica Lario had launched a scathing attack on the Berlusconi insisting that she’s ‘suffering’ from his fascination with young women.

She described his behaviour as “shameless rubbish” and compared him with Napoleon and a Roman emperor.

Berlusconi’s governing coalition had initially considered putting forward the women, including television show hostesses and a former Big Brother contestant, as potential MEPs to represent Italy.

However, left-leaning daily La Repubblica stated that the fact only one of the four young women had been chosen to contest the elections in June was a victory for Veronica.

“A win for Veronica, Berlusconi excludes showgirls,” the Telegraph quoted the Italian press as stating. (ANI)

Michael Phelps: I’m not dating anybody

Washington, Apr 24 (ANI): Olympic star Michael Phelps has denied reports suggesting that he’s romancing controversial Miss California contestant Carrie Prejean.

“I’m not dating anybody,” he told Usmagazine.com Wednesday at the opening of the Omega flagship boutique in NYC.

“I’m single. My private life stays private,” he added.

As for Prejean’s anti-gay marriage answer during the Miss USA competition, Phelps said: “That’s the cool thing about America – everybody has their opinion.”

“I’m not saying I support her,” Phelps then added.

“I’m not saying I don’t support her,” he said. (ANI)

All about the Shahid- Anushka pairing

Anushka Sharma started her career as a young girl romancing the much older Shah Rukh Khan. And South actress Asin who debuted at the same time opposite Aamir Khan walked away with most of the limelight.

But the girl is actually all set to bounce back and this time with someone whoÂ’s closer to her age -Shahid Kapur. And yes, sheÂ’s working with her mentors- Yash Raj films all over again.

The buzz is that Anushka and Shahid will be paired opposite each other in a film to be directed by actor Parmeet Sethi who worked with Yash Raj years before in the hit ‘Dilwale Dulhaniya Le Jayenge’. Apparently Aditya Chopra approved of the idea while shooting for ‘Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi’.

According to reports Parmeet has also roped in stand-up comedian Veer Das and Indian Idol contestant and host Meiyang Chang as lead actors of the film which will tell the story of four people and how they evolve in life.

Parmeet wasn’t too forthcoming and just revealed: “It’s true that I am planning to make this film but I will speak in depth when I get a go-ahead from the production house (Yash Raj).”

Maybe heÂ’s being superstitious about things and thinks that revealing will make it difficult for the film. Yash Raj too propagates such a strategy.

The movie has already been tagged as an ‘unconventional film’. Well, that’s a cliché statement. We’ll only know when the film finally releases!

A-Rod dating ‘The Real Housewives’ babe?

New York, Apr 13 (ANI): Yankees slugger Alex Rodriguez is reportedly dating a contestant from ‘The Real Housewives of New York City’.

The 33-year-old baseball star was seen sharing an intimate dinner with Bethenny Frankel at a local restaurant in Miami on April 10.

According to The News’ Gatecrasher column, Frankel and A-Rod hooked up “three months ago”.

However, Frankel later laughed off the reports.

She said, “We’re madly in love; we’re engaged. I fly to Miami every weekend. I’m in the front row when they’re playing. I never felt this way.”

But really, she insisted, “No, I’ve never been in the same room with him.”

However, sources say that Rodriguez subsequently got in touch with Frankel.

“I think the reports sparked his curiosity. I think he respected the way she denied it,” the New York Daily News quoted an insider as saying.

“They could be a match,” said a friend.

“She’s very athletic – she snowboards and surfs. She’s an expert on nutrition. She’s also a no-nonsense, straight-shooting lady. And we know Alex likes strong women,” the friend added. (ANI)

Nepal bypolls boost ruling Maoists

Kathmandu, April 11 (IANS) Nepal’s ruling Maoist party has received a boost in by-elections to six seats, with the results coming in Saturday indicating it was poised to win three, including an opposition stronghold.

Nepal’s biggest opposition party, the Nepali Congress (NC), suffered setbacks in two seats in Friday’s bypolls. The Maoists have done well despite growing public criticism of their seven-month-old government.

The Kanchanpur seat had been a stronghold of former NC prime minister Sher Bahadur Deuba and returned him to parliament in the 2008 election. Vacated after Deuba won from a second constituency as well, the bastion fell to the Maoist grassroots leader whom Deuba had humbled, Harish Thakulla.

Thakulla, also known as Kamal Chhetri during the Maoists’ 10-year ‘People’s War’, who had lived in India’s Mumbai city for several years, supporting himself by hawking newspapers, pulled off a surprise victory over NC candidate Ek Raj Joshi.

The NC also lost its Dhanusha citadel, which had voted for the party in 2008.

NC lawmaker Ram Baran Yadav had resigned from the seat after being elected the first president of the republic of Nepal, replacing deposed King Gyanendra as the head of state.

Though Yadav’s son, radiologist Chandra Mohan Yadav, was fielded by the NC, the debutant politician floundered in third place with the regional party, Terai Madesh Loktantrik Party, and the ruling Communist Party of Nepal-Unified Marxist Leninist, which is a member of the Maoist-led coalition government, fighting neck and neck.

The NC however got a shot in the arm when its candidate Shekhar Koirala won from Morang district in eastern Nepal.

Koirala, nephew of NC chief and former prime minister Girija Prasad Koirala and uncle of Bollywood diva Manisha Koirala, had been humbled in the same constituency last year by the new regional party, Madhesi Janadhikar Forum. This time however he clawed back, with the blessings of his octogenarian uncle who was among the first few to cast their votes, winning by a slender margin of 692 votes.

In the other seat in Morang, there were no surprises. Won last year by the Forum, it voted for the same party’s Jay Ram Yadav, with the Maoists coming a close second.

Counting will start late for the seat in Rolpa, regarded as the cradle of the Maoist movement and won last year by Maoist supremo Pushpa Kamal Dahal Prachanda.

It is likely to be retained by the ruling party despite a dissenter contesting as an independent candidate.

Besides Kanchanpur, Maoist contestant Krishna Bahadur Gurung won from Kaski, the district that last year voted for Maoist Law Minister Dev Gurung.

In Karnataka, parties field just four women candidates

Bangalore, April 6 (IANS) Karnataka has a healthy 10:9.7 male-female ratio when it comes to its over 40 million voters. But political parties have fielded only four women for the state’s 28 Lok Sabha seats.

The Congress has fielded two women, Margaret Alva from Uttara Kannada and Tejaswini Gowda from Bangalore Rural.

The ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the Communist Party of India (CPI) have fielded one each while the Janata Dal-Secular (JD-S) has no woman contestant though its election symbol is a woman carrying haystack.

J. Shanti of the BJP, the sister of Health Minister B. Sriramulu, is contesting from Bellary while the CPI’s Radha Sundaresh will fight from Udupi-Chikmagalur.

‘This is the plight of our democracy. Even after 57 years and 14 general elections, Indian women have nothing to cheer about. Their representation in parliament is abysmally low. It is yet to cross even 10 percent. Karnataka is no different as only four women are in the poll fray,’ Rani Satish, former Rajya Sabha member and president of the women’s wing of Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee, told IANS.

‘Parties have to nominate more and more women to increase their representation in parliament. But unfortunately this is not happening. Passing of the women’s reservation bill in parliament is the only solution to the lacunae. Otherwise the situation will continue,’ Satish stressed.

The Women’s Reservation Bill to reserve for them 33 percent seats in parliament and state assemblies has been gathering dust in the absence of a consensus among political parties.

Asked why her party has fielded only two women candidates, Satish said it was at least better than others in the state.

‘Why is it that when there are almost an equal number of women voters as compared to males, there are only four women candidates out of 73 candidates who have filed their nominations for 28 seats?,’ asked Shruti (writes her first name only), a senior member of the BJP’s women wing in Karnataka.

‘Strangely all the parties are remaining silent on the issue. If women are not encouraged to jump into the election fray, how can we hope for the fulfilment of the cause of empowerment of women?’ Shruti asked.

All the parties maintain that nominating a candidate has nothing to do with his/her gender, but it is the ‘winnability criteria’ that counts.

‘Nominating women candidates does not necessarily mean that a party is for women’s empowerment. A candidate should have enough mass appeal to win the elections. The BJP in the state is doing enough for women,’ said D.V. Sadananda Gowda, state BJP president.

The JD-S declined to comment on the issue.

Tejaswini Gowda, who scored an upset win over former prime minister and JD-S president H.D. Deve Gowda in the Kanakapura Lok Sabha constituency in the 2004 polls, is confident of retaining the seat. Her opponent this time is H.D. Deve Gowda’s son and former chief minister H.D. Kumaraswamy. Kanakapura has become Bangalore Rural following recarving of seats.

‘Being a woman has always acted to my advantage and my gender is no deterrent to me. I feel that women leaders are better workers than men and have proven it again and again,’ she said.

Though the number of women elected to parliament from the state has been very few, at least three of them, Basavarajeshwari, Taradevi Siddhartha and Margaret Alva — have served as central ministers.

The one-time dental assistant who found fame as an ill-educated but straight-talking TV gameshow contestant, died of cervical cancer last month, aged 27.

The final days of the mother of two were as closely chronicled in the media as her controversial appearances on the Big Brother reality television show.

In February she married her boyfriend in a ceremony that received blanked television and newspaper coverage after she had announced doctors had only given her weeks to live from the spread of her cancer.

Even Prime Minister Gordon Brown, who had commented on her illness, joined the tributes that poured in after her death, saying his thoughts went out to her family.

Her funeral cortege will travel through Bermondsey in southeast London where she grew up, to her home in Upshire, Essex, before reaching the St John the Baptist Church in Buckhurst Hill.

Barriers were in place outside the church to hold back the crowds expected to flood to the service.

Many have criticised the media for obsessing over a someone who was famous for little more than being famous.

But her spokesman Max Clifford said Goody had saved lives by using her fame to publicise the risk of cervical cancer.

He told Sky News that young women had written to say they had taken tests after Goody said last August she had cervical cancer. Some had proved positive and were now being treated.

“In years to come her legacy is going to be an awful lot of young women in Britain that will be alive purely because Jade Goody was so public,” he said.

Miss India finale to be held tomorrow

MUMBAI: After weeks of intense training and grooming, the 20 finalists of the country’s biggest beauty contest will face their moment of reckoning
tomorrow. The grand finale of the Pantaloons Femina Miss India (PFMI) 2009 will be held at the Andheri Sports Complex on Sunday. The event will be telecast live on Sony Entertainment Television at 8 pm.

For several weeks since the shortlist was announced, the candidates have been training to walk the ramp, learning to dress and groom themselves in keeping with international standards, and needless to say, closely monitoring their diet. Now that the litmus test is around the corner, excitement levels are building up to a frenzied climax.

This year, actors Malaika Arora Khan and R Madhavan will host the formal ceremony through to the final round while funnymen Karan Wahi and Swapnil Joshi will provide comic relief by chatting with the judges and members of the audience, particularly the anxious families who will each be praying for their girls to win.

The stakes seem higher especially because reigning Miss World runner-up, PFMI 2008 Parvathy Omanakuttan has carried forward the dream run of former winners like Sushmita Sen, Aishwarya Rai, Lara Dutta, Priyanka Chopra and Dia Mirza. Actress Priyanka Chopra will revisit the moment of her success when she performs at the event on Sunday. Also taking the stage will be Fashion co-star Kangana Ranaut and Genelia D’souza, both choreographed by the Shiamak Davar Institute of Performing Arts.

The contestants will be dressed in dazzling creations by Rocky S, Pantaloons (designed by Rajesh and Anirban), Prasad Bidappa and Rajan for Arabella and Ritu Kumar. The ramp walk has been choreographed by Marc Robinson, who is contestant director and fashion director of PFMI 2009.
