India urged to condemn Israeli attack on flotilla

New Delhi, May 31 (IANS) The Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPI-M) Monday urged the government to condemn the Israeli attack on a flotilla of six ships carrying humanitarian aid to Gaza.

‘India must also work actively with other countries from the non-aligned nations in the UN and other bodies to force Israel to lift the illegal siege of Gaza,’ the CPI-M said in a statement.

The statement said Israeli armed forces ‘illegally attacked’ the flotilla in international waters Sunday night, killing at least 15 international activists and injuring many.

About 700 activists from a number of countries were on the six ships aiming to take 10,000 tonnes of humanitarian aid to Gaza, ‘which has been under relentless siege for almost three years now’.

‘The attack … shows the complete contempt Israel has for international law or international opinion. Attacking ships in international waters and killing its passengers is a brazen act of piracy,’ it said.

The LTTE was involved in the assassination of former Indian Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi in May 1991 and the group has been banned by India since 1992.

India was the first country ban the LTTE followed by USA, United Kingdom, 27 European Union Countries, Canada and it is learnt that Australia as well as Malaysia are seriously contempt plating on banning this terrorists’ outfit in their soil. (ANI)

Hulls denies Windsor contempt accusation

Victoria’s Attorney-General, Rob Hulls, is denying he has committed a serious breach of parliamentary rules, over the Windsor Hotel inquiry.

The clerk of Victoria’s Upper House has written to a parliamentary committee advising that Mr Hulls is in contempt of Parliament, by directing staff not to appear at the inquiry.

The inquiry is examining the leak of confidential media strategy document, that advised sham consultations about the hotel’s redevelopment.

Justin Madden’s former press secretary, Peta Duke was advised not to testify before the committee by the attorney-general.

But Mr Hulls says he has done nothing wrong.

“The Upper House knows full well, what the longstanding conventions and protocols are,” he said.

“That the ministers themselves are held to account before the committees, and not the ministerial advisers.”

He maintains he has followed the correct procedures and does not have a case to answer.

“The Liberal Party and the Greens are acting like bullies, wanting to drag this young woman in front of a committee in breach of all conventions, for their grubby political purposes,” he said.

“Not only are there only questions about the validity of the subpoena itself, and I’ve set that out in correspondence to the committee, but there’s also questions about the role of the chair of this committee.”

The State Opposition is calling for Mr Hulls to step down.

The planning spokesman, Matthew Guy, says Mr Hulls is setting a disturbing precedent.

“It really beggars belief that we have an Attorney General who is directing, bullying, intimidating people not to obey a legal subpoena, not to turn up after a legal summons has been issued,” he said.

“That is more a reflection of Rob Hulls and the Brumby Government, than anyone else.”

Springborg apologises to Queensland Parliament

Queensland Deputy Opposition leader Lawrence Springborg has apologised for trying to release documents from a parliamentary committee.

Late last year, he aired claims against the Crime and Misconduct Commission (CMC) using details from the Parliamentary Crime and Misconduct Committee.

The Privileges Committee found no contempt but asked Mr Springborg to say sorry.

“Thank you very much Mr Speaker, I refer to the report number 104 of the integrity, ethics and parliamentary privileges committee in relation to unauthorised tabling of committee documents in the legislative assembly,” he said in Queensland Parliament.

“I thank the committee for their deliberations and their findings and apologise unreservedly.”

Twitter Gate: Congress will take action against Tharoor at the appropriate time: Tewari

New Delhi, Sep.18 (ANI): The Congress party on Friday said it would take appropriate action against Minister of State for External Affairs Shashi Tharoor for his “cattle class” comments through the medium of Twitter at the appropriate time.

Addressing a party news conference in the capital, Congress spokesman Manish Tewari said: “We will take appropriate action (against Mr. Tharoor) at the appropriate time.

Tewari further said that action against Tharoor was not ruled out.

He also justified Rajasthan Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot’s statement on Thursday seeking Tharoor’s resignation for what he called “irresponsible” comments on the social networking site Twitter.

“It was unfortunate and unbecoming on his part to make such comments. In my view he should tender his resignation as Minister,” Gehlot had said.

“To make such irreverent comments is all the more despicable when one is holding a responsible position as that of the Minister of State for External Affairs,” Gehlot told journalists at his official residence here after a “Roza Iftar” party on Thursday evening.

Gehlot had termed Tharoor’s references posted on the site such as “cattle class” and “holy cows” as unacceptable in Indian politics.

Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chauhan also said Tharoor had no right to continue in the Union Cabinet.

“I believe that in a democracy, people are God. To refer to them as ‘cattle’ is an insult to them. And I believe that such a person has no right to be a Union minister,” he told reporters.

Tharoor, who is on an official visit to Liberia, had earlier apologized through the Twitter medium, saying he was “sorry” for hurting any sentiments and that his words had been misunderstood.

“To those hurt by the belief that my repeating the phrase showed contempt: sorry. It’s a silly expression, but means no disrespect to economy travellers, only to airlines for herding us in like cattle. Many have misunderstood,” Tharoor said.

The minister said that he had learned belatedly of the fuss “over my tweet and pointed out that the phrase “cattle class” was used in the query, which he just repeated. (ANI)

Tharoor apologises for his ‘Holy Cow’ tweet

New Delhi, Sept 18 (ANI): Union Minister of State for External Affairs Shashi Tharoor has apologized for his recent comment that he was prepared to travel in the “cattle class out of solidarity with all our holy cows”.

“It’s a silly expression but means no disrespect to economy travellers, only to airlines for herding us in like cattle. Many have misunderstood,” writes Tharoor while replying on Twitter.

“I am told it sounds worse in Malayalam, esp out of context. To those hurt by the belief that my repeating the phrase showed contempt: Sorry,” Tharoor says.

“Now realize, I should not assume people will appreciate humour. And you should not give those who would wilfully distort your words an opportunity,” he adds.

Tharoor was quoted as saying on Twitter that he would travel in “cattle class out of solidarity with all our holy cows,” which was termed “unacceptable and totally insensitive” by his party, the Congress.

Slamming Tharoor’s remarks, Congress spokesperson Jayanti Natarajan said: “Certainly the Congress doesn’t endorse or approve it and we find it unacceptable. We find this articulation unacceptable and absolutely insensitive.”

The whole controversy erupted after Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee asked the Congress leaders to observe austerity in order to cut down expenditure in the wake of draught declared in parts of the country.

Earlier, the Congress Party had decided that its ministers and lawmakers would also take a 20 per cent cut in salaries. (ANI)

Bridging gap between youth and police in Kashmir

Srinagar, Sep 12 (ANI): Youth in Srinagar got a chance to voice their views and grievances against the security forces at a pro-active meet held recently here.

Jointly hosted by the All India Centre for Rural and Urban Development (AICURD), the New Delhi-based non-governmental organisation and the Kashmir University’s Department of Students Welfare, the meet was aimed to bridge the gap as well as mistrust between the youth and the security forces in the valley.

Since last year, there has been rising anger amongst the people of Kashmir against the police.he meet addressed vital issues to lessen that anger, hatred and contempt.

“The attempt was to tell these people the truth and arouse their conscience and listen to their views about us so that we can improve ourselves,” said Hemant Kumar Lohia, Deputy Inspector General (DIG), Central Range, Kashmir.

The students got ample scope to speak out their concerns and complaints before the top brass of the police and allied security forces.

The meet turned out to be an ideal platform for the youth to speak out their minds freely.

“The police are a force which is meant for protection of people. For the first time we got such a platform where we could interact with the police and put forth our views, it is a very good platform,” said Feroze Parry, a student.

The organisers of the meet were confident that the meet would help to dispel the hatred to a great extent.

“We hope that these discussions will help in lessening the hatred amongst the youth towards the security forces. And we can hope for a better Kashmir,” said Anupama Behen of AICURD. (ANI)

Judge denies new trial for Anand Jon

New York, July 7 (ANI): A judge has denied a request for a new trial for Indian-born fashion designer Anand Jon.

His lawyers asked for a new trial on the basis of juror misconduct, saying a juror had improperly contacted Jon’s sister.

In his ruling, LA Superior Court Judge David Wesley did find that the juror and Alexander’s sister acted inappropriately and held both in contempt of court. However, Wesley ruled that their contact did not taint the verdicts.

Wesley said that, under California law, “a new trial will not be granted where there is a misconduct of such a trifling nature,” reports the New York Post.

“This is a total travesty of justice,” Jon said.

Jon is to be sentenced next month. (ANI)

Malay Indian mom still has to wait for custody of her three kids

Ipoh (Malaysia), May 6 (ANI): The Malaysian High Court has temporarily stayed a decision handed down by another court giving interim custody of three children to a Malay Indian mother M. Indira Gandhi.

According to The Star, High Court Justice Wan Afrah Wan Ibrahim yesterday granted an ad-interim stay on the order, pending the court’s decision on May 14 on contempt proceedings initiated by Indira Gandhi’s lawyers against her husband, K. Patmanathan.

Indira Gandhi’s counsel Augustine Anthony said the proceedings came about as Patmanathan had allegedly failed to comply with the previous court order and did not surrender his youngest daughter, one-year-old Prasana Diksa, to his wife.

The matter, heard in chambers, was raised as a preliminary objection in the hearing of Patmanathan’s application to set aside the custody order.

The husband, who was not present but was represented by counsel Mohamed Haniff Khatri Abdullah, had also applied for a stay of execution on the order.

Mohamed Haniff maintained that his client did not commit contempt of court.

On April 24, High Court judicial commissioner Ridwan Ibrahim granted interim custody of Tevi Darsiny, 12, Karan Dinish, 11, and Prasana to Indira Gandhi.

Despite this, the 34-year-old Indira Gandhi, who is currently staying with her two older children, had been unable to locate her husband to retrieve her youngest child.

She has since been seeking help from the police and the public, by distributing some 5,000 posters of her husband and Prasana across the state. (ANI)

Accused thrown out of court in German terrorism trial

Dusseldorf – One of the four men accused of a major Islamist terrorist plot in Germany was thrown out of court Tuesday for disturbing the courtroom proceedings with interjections. “I want to go back to my cell,” Adem Yilmaz, 30, a Turkish citizen raised in Germany, called out at the start of the day’s proceedings. He was duly ordered out of the courtroom. Yilmaz hugged his co- accused on the way out.

He and two German men who converted to Islam are accused of plotting to set off a series of car bombs at US airbases in Germany or at bars frequented by US servicemen. The blasts might have been comparable to Islamist attacks on Madrid (2004) and London (2005).

Last week, Yilmaz was sentenced to two weeks’ imprisonment for contempt of court after he refused to stand up when the judges entered the courtroom.

The two weeks in jail must be served out after the trial, which is expected to last two years, ends. (dpa)

Advocate files contempt petition against Modi on Godhra remark

New Delhi, May 1 (ANI): An advocate filed a petition before the Supreme Court on Friday seeking contempt proceedings against Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi for his remarks in connection with the probe ordered against him and others for post-Godhra riots.

Prashant Bhushan, who has been assisting the Court as amicus curiae in the matter of Jakia Nasim, wife of former Congress MP Ehsan Jafri, alleged that Modi had suggested the Supreme Court-ordered probe was a conspiracy of the Congress party.

It may be recalled that Jakia Nasim has accused the Gujarat Government of not entertaining her complaint relating to Jafri, who was killed in the 2002 riots.

An apex court bench headed by Chief Justice K G Balakrishnan has said that it will hear the contempt petition next week.

Modi said on Tuesday that he is ready to go to jail if his involvement in the 2002 Godhra riots is proved.

“I will abide by the Supreme Court directives and fully cooperate in any probe. I am willing to go to jail if my involvement is proved by the Special Investigation Team (SIT) in the post-Godhra riots,” he said at an election rally in Anand, Gujarat.

“The criminals like Quattrocchi are getting bail, and Indians are being put into jails. I am ready for any challenge and would not kneel down,” Modi had said.

The Supreme Court on Monday asked the SIT to probe the role of 64 people, including that of Modi in the post-Godhra riots cases.

The apex court order was passed in response to a petition filed by the wife of the late Congress parliamentarian Ehsaan Jaffery.

The court asked the SIT to submit the report within three months.

The Supreme Court on Friday ordered a retrial of the Gujarat riots cases by fast track courts.

The apex court also directed that the trial would not be shifted out of Gujarat.

United boss Ferguson fires new salvo in battle with Benitez

London – Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson continued his war of words with Liverpool boss Rafa Benitez on Friday, accusing him of treating opponents with contempt.

He criticised him for describing Liverpool’s city rivals Everton, whom United face in Sunday’s FA Cup semi-final, as a small club.

“Everton are a big club, not a small one which Benitez arrogantly said,” said Ferguson.

He then condemned the Spaniard for a gesture he made during his team’s 4-0 victory over Blackburn Rovers on Saturday, when he seemed to indicate at 2-0 that the game was over.

Blackburn manager Sam Allardyce was equally offended by Benitez’s attitude.

“But arrogance is one thing,” Ferguson went on. “You cannot forgive contempt, which is what he showed Sam Allardyce last weekend.

“When Liverpool scored their second goal he signalled as if the game was finished. I do not think Sam deserved that.

“Sam has worked so hard for the LMA (League Managers’ Association) and he’s had a weakened team. I just thought it showed contempt.

“In my experience no Liverpool manager has ever done that. It was beyond the pale.”

Allardyce has reviewed video evidence of the incident, in which Benitez crossed his hands over his chest.

“I think if everybody has a look back at his gestures you will see them as pretty dismissive to me and the Blackburn Rovers team as a whole,” said Allardyce.

“I was hugely disappointed by those gestures. I think they were disrespectful and quite humiliating.

“Having looked at them again this week, I think I’m right and everybody will see why I’m complaining.

“The feeling was that he had written us off. It was open arms and then a crossover of the arms as if to suggest that was it.

“I admit it was a hard game, a difficult game for us, and we were well beaten by an outstanding Liverpool side.

“But in terms of respect, you don’t expect those sort of things to happen in a game of football. I was very, very upset by it.

“The game is hard enough as it is without a fellow manager doing what seemed to be an undermining gesture.

“I then waited to have a word with him after the game in his room, but as usual and unfortunately, he didn’t turn up.

“Not explaining himself by not turning up in his office really shows what he is like.”

Ferguson is notorious in the English premiership for attempts to mentally needle other managers. (dpa)

Man U’s Fergie says Liverpool’s Rafa is arrogant and rude

London, Apr.18 (ANI): Manchester United coach-cum-manager Alex Ferguson has described his Liverpool counterpart Rafa Benitez as rude and arrogant.

“There’s one thing with his arrogance that you can’t forgive and that is his contempt for Sam last week when Liverpool scored their second goal against Blackburn. Did you see it? It was absolute contempt. He went ‘game finished.’ I don’t think any other Liverpool manager would ever have done that. But he is beyond the pale,” The Sun quoted Ferguson, as saying.

A Liverpool source said: “Rafa has laughed off what is clearly just a co-ordinated attack on him.” (ANI)

B’desh House panel mulls action against key ACC officials

Anisur Rahman Dhaka, Apr 12 (PTI) A top Parliamentary committee in Bangladesh is mulling action against senior officials of the anti-graft commission, including the former chief of the panel, for defying its order to appear in the House. The Parliamentary standing committee today accused senior officials of the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) of contempt of the House after they refused to appear before the panel for a hearing.

“They will have to explain before the next meeting of the (parliamentary) committee under what law they defied the parliamentary summon,” Mohiuddin Khan Alamgir, Chairman of the standing committee on public undertaking, told reporters. Mainuddin Khan Badal, another member of the committee, said that under the British and Indian parliamentary practices the former ACC chairman, the two commissioners and the secretary of the anti-graft body could even be arrested for their refusal to appear before the committee today as they were ordered earlier.

On April 7, the parliamentary committee in a letter asked the former ACC chief, retired army general Hassan Mashhud Chowdhury and three other officials to appear before the panel along with the commission’s latest annual report, audit report and documents on its activities. However, they have refused to appear before the parliamentary body, saying the summons are “beyond jurisdiction of the committee” as they were accountable to the president of the country.
