Iowa senator demands Congress probe on how Shahzad became U.S. citizen

Washington, May 7 (ANI): The Republican Senator from Iowa, Charles Grassley, has sent a letter to Department of Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano asking for the “Alien” file on Times Square bomber Faisal Shahzad and his family members and for everyone who has been a reference or a sponsor for the terror suspect.

An Alien or “A” file includes visa and travel history, financial and personal information as well as any derogatory information from law enforcement.

According to CBS News, Grassley also wants Shahzad”s arrival forms that he filled out each time he re-entered the United States and whether or not he sponsored other individuals to become citizens.

CBS news reported Wednesday that Faisal Shahzad had appeared on a Department of Homeland Security watch list between 1999 and 2008 because he brought 80,000 dollars of cash into the United States.

Grassley wants the documents by May 11, 2010. (ANI)

Geithner: pact agreed on World Bank capital rise

(Reuters) – World Bank members have agreed to pour more capital into the lender and give developing countries a greater voice in running the bank, Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner said on Sunday.

“We can feel proud that we have concluded agreements on a transformative financial and governance reform agenda, along with new capital for the World Bank and a new and more representative shareholding formula,” Geithner said in a statement delivered to its development committee.

He also said that the United States, which holds the largest voting share in the World Bank at 16.4 percent, would not seek any increase for itself under a revised voting formula that is to better reflect developing countries’ economic heft.

“Because we believe this overall outcome merits our strong endorsement, the United States agreed not to take up its full shareholding in this new arrangement,” Geithner said.

Geithner said the World Bank deserved more capital to help it in efforts like helping Afghanistan to develop more productive farming and for relief efforts such as those it has undertaken in Haiti after it was struck by an earthquake.

The World Bank had asked for a capital increase of $3 billion to $5 billion, allocated proportionally among its members.

Geithner said he considered the World Bank had made “a strong and compelling case” for a $3.5 billion increase and said he would ask Congress to approve the U.S. share of it.

Obama signs executive order on abortion

US president Barack Obama has signed an executive order barring taxpayer dollars from being used to pay for abortions, keeping a pledge he made to help push his health care reform through Congress.

The White House issued a photograph of Mr Obama signing the measure in the Oval Office, surrounded by pro-life Democrats, whose votes were crucial in the 216-212 passage of the historic health bill.

In negotiations before Sunday’s vote in the House, Mr Obama’s executive order won over the holdouts.

Mr Obama’s measure does not alter existing legislation on abortion, White House spokesman Robert Gibbs stressed, adding that the president maintained his support for a woman’s right to choose to terminate her pregnancy.

Mr Gibbs said the executive order “ensures that health care, the law the president signed, maintains the status quo of the federal law prohibiting the use of federal dollars for abortion”.

Lahore, Mar.20 (ANI): Responding to Pakistan Foreign Minister Shah Mehmood Qureshi’s statement that it was now America’s turn ‘to do more’ to help Islamabad tackle the menace of terrorism more effectively, President Obama’s Special Envoy to Afghanistan and Pakistan, Richard Holbrooke, has said the US is already ‘doing more’ and will ‘announce more’ for Pakistan.

Briefing the US State Department, Holbrooke said the Obama Administration has been doing all that it could for the overall development of Pakistan.

“We are doing more, we will announce more, we want to do as much as the Congress will support, but Congress writes the cheques,” The Daily Times quoted Holbrooke, as saying.

Commenting on the upcoming strategic dialogue between Pakistan and the United States, scheduled to be held on March 24, Holbrooke said the deliberation “marks a major intensification in the relationship” between both countries.

He said the US would also discuss with the Pakistani delegation, which would be headed by Qureshi, issues related to the distribution of water and power.

“Beyond the strategic broad-range discussions, we want to move into operational things like water, energy,” he said. (ANI)

Footy training restrictions still in force

Sunraysia football grounds are in their best condition in years to start the season, but the game’s administrators say restrictions on training will stay this season.

The Sunraysia Football and Netball League has had limited training access to grounds for the past two seasons to try to keep them in the best possible condition for games.

Chairman Peter Congress says grounds are in great condition after recent rain and irrigation upgrades at some venues, but the training restrictions are still needed.

“The growing season is about to finish so by the end of April grass won’t grow,” Mr Congress said.

“Its pleasing to be able to report there are a lot of numbers, particularly at junior level, and it becomes a wear and tear issue, so we’ve got to be very mindful.”

GM to Reinstate 600 Dealerships Slated to Be Cut

GM executives said Friday that the dealerships — more than half of those seeking to stay with the automaker — will receive letters giving them the option to remain open.

NEW YORK – General Motors Co. will reinstate 661 dealerships it sought to drop from its sales network.

GM executives said Friday that the dealerships — more than half of those seeking to stay with the automaker — will receive letters giving them the option to remain open. GM said it would not have enough time to negotiate with all 1,100 dealerships that appealed the automaker’s decision to close them within a four-month window imposed by the federal government.

“By doing this we save a lot of time, energy and dollars,” said Jim Bunnell, GM general manager of network support, saying the company wished to avoid a “very large arbitration process.”

As part of its restructuring, GM last year told about 2,000 dealerships it would not renew their franchise agreements once they run out in October 2010. But the dealerships have said GM treated them unfairly, and last month Congress passed a law requiring an appeals process for the dealers.

GM’s decision to keep the additional showrooms open effectively shrinks the number of appeals it has to contend with. Arbitration hearings for the dealers who didn’t get offers but still want to stay with GM will begin later this month.

The cuts to GM’s 6,000-dealer network were designed to compensate for much lower demand for cars and trucks, but some dealers have argued that lots that are still profitable are at risk, and that the automaker hasn’t offered enough details about how it’s choosing which businesses to shutter.

GM would not offer any details on Friday about which dealerships it was reinstating and where they are located. It said it chose the 661 based on a variety of criteria, including sales and other business factors.

The company said it hoped to have every letter of intent with dealerships by Monday. At that point, dealers have 10 days to respond and 60 days to meet a set of criteria that would allow them to stay with GM.

A spokeswoman with Chrysler Group LLC, which has cut 789 dealers, said the company was preparing a statement in response to questions about whether they also intended to reinstate dropped dealerships. Chrysler showrooms slated for closure are also appealing to stay open, though it remained unclear how many.

Michael Boudreau, an auto industry turnaround expert with O’Keefe & Associates, said GM likely saw the reinstatement of the dealers as the “lesser of the two evils” versus the costs of litigating their termination.

“It’s not exactly what they wanted to do, and it’s always I think a little embarrassing when you have to make changes based on an arbitration process, but they’ve had to adjust and move forward,” he said.

Boudreau added that the decision could have ripple effects.

“The Chrysler dealers are taking a close look at this,” he said.

Tammy Darvish of the Washington-area Darcars chain, which has three dealerships slated for closure, said she was encouraged by GM’s decision.

“If they are genuinely, truly sincere, it’s overwhelmingly heartwarming,” Darvish said of the company’s offer to allow dealers to demonstrate their eligibility to remain open.

But as of Friday, Darvish said she didn’t know if her franchises are among those being reinstated. She said she plans to go into arbitration if they are not.

Congress-brokered talks between dealer groups and the automakers began in September. But those talks stalled over disputes about the review process for targeted dealerships and other issues. Looming over the fight has been the threat of federal legislation to deal with the closures. Lawmakers warned that if a deal wasn’t reached, that legislation would move forward.

The White House has opposed the legislation over concerns that it could hurt GM’s and Chrysler’s efforts to rebound from their government-led bankruptcies.

Reid: 36,000 Lost Jobs in February ‘Really Good’

Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid is catching heat for portraying Friday’s labor report showing 36,000 jobs lost in February as “really good” news.

Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid is catching heat for portraying Friday’s labor report showing 36,000 jobs were lost in February as “really good” news.

“Today is a big day in America. Only 36,000 people lost their jobs today, which is really good,” Reid said Friday on the Senate floor.

Republicans drew attention to the remark, which was captured in a YouTube clip, while bloggers railed against the Nevada Democrat.

Other officials appeared a bit more tactful in their interpretation of the February jobless numbers, which showed the unemployment rate holding steady at 9.7 percent despite prior suggestions that February’s record snowfall might drive that number up.

President Obama called the report “better than expected,” but he added that the number of unemployed is still “more than we should tolerate.”

House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer noted that in February 2009, the country lost 700,000 jobs, and that the past month’s report shows job losses are slowing.

“Nevertheless, millions of Americans remain out of work, and Congress will continue to focus on creating jobs,” Hoyer said in his written statement.

Fuel price hike: Truckers to go on indefinite strike from April 5

New Delhi, Mar 5 (ANI): The All India Motor Transport Congress (AITMC) on Friday gave a call for an indefinite strike from April 5 demanding a rollback of the fuel price hike.

With this call over 75 lakhs trucks will go off the road from April first week.

Briefing the media about the decision, AIMTC president G R Shanmugappa said: “We have submitted four major demands to the government and will wait till the midnight of April 5, 2010. And if the demands are not met by this time, we will pull-out all our trucks from the road.”

The AIMTC meeting demanded the Centre to immediately roll-back hike in fuel prices, especially that of diesel, which rose by over Rs 2.5 a litre consequent to a duty hike on fuels.

“The hike is abnormal, unbearable and intolerable, which will further deteriorate the already dwindling condition of truckers,” he said.

The AMITC is also demanding the implementation of the agreement on national permit that would require truckers to pay only a one-time fee of Rs 15,000 for a year, against the current norm of paying each states a fee of Rs 5,000.

The Centre promised to reduce the fees when the truckers went on strike in 2009.

The Centre had signed an agreement with AIMTC on February 23, 2009 for implementing the new national permit scheme before January this year, but despite of the minister”s assurance, the government has not notified it.

The AIMTC claimed the strike would also have the support from other segments such as tempos and other small goods carrying vehicle owners and asked the government to notify and implement the same before March 31. (ANI)

Pak Navy to acquire 30 year old US frigate for 78 million dollars

Islamabad, Mar.5 (ANI): The Pakistan Navy is set to acquire a 30 year old Oliver Perry class frigate, USS McInerney, from the United States at a whopping cost of about 78 million dollars.

The three decade old frigate, which was put on the US Navy’s inactivation list in September last year, is likely to start its journey to the Karachi port by the end of 2010.

It is worth mentioning here that Islamabad is negotiating with Washington for five more Oliver Perry class frigates.

However, the US Defence Security Department through a notification to the Congress had clarified that the frigate along with its equipments, parts and logistical support will be worth at least 78 millions dollars.
