Women opting for feticide are murderers: Mahila Congress chief

NEW DELHI: At a time when the country is battling a declining sex ratio, a senior Congress leader has put the blame of rampant female foeticide on women. Referring to women in such cases as “murderers”, All India Mahila Congress president Anita Verma said that this was the biggest crime. Women's rights activists have reacted sharply to this controversial statement saying that it was even more damaging since it came from a woman political leader.

When asked if women were responsible for female foeticide, Verma told TOI, “Women are completely responsible. If she believes people and kills a girl baby, isse bada murder kya ho sakta hai?” (what can be a bigger crime that that?)

Verma said that women had to be made aware through public discourse and seminars but did not seem to think there was anything wrong in laying the responsibility of sex selective births squarely at the door of the woman.

Activists have express

ed concern over this simplistic and irresponsible statement. Left leader and Rajya Sabha member Brinda Karat said that such statements diverted attention from the non-implementation of the pre-natal determination test (PNDT) Act. “Such statements are damaging to the campaign for preventing sex selection. There is total lack of appreciation of societal pressures on a woman,” she said. Karat added that the PNDT Act clearly laid out that medical professionals and societal pressure on a woman were responsible for the declining sex ratio.

Centre for Social Research's Ranjana Kumari said it was “unfortunate” that a political leader had made such comments. “Women do not have control over their own bodies and these decisions are made for them. They are at risk of losing their status within the family and often their marriage if they do not comply. This just shows lack of understanding of how our society works,” she said.

Youth Congress membership set to touch half million in Kerala

Thiruvananthapuram, June 6 (IANS) The membership of the Youth Congress is all set to touch the half million-mark in Kerala, a Congress legislator said Sunday.

Congress legislator P.C. Vishnunadh, who will contest for the post of Youth Congress president in the elections to be held in August, told IANS that initial indications are that the total number of Youth Congress members in the state will touch half a million.

‘We can’t make a comparison to the past because such a membership drive has never taken place,’ Vishnunadh said.

‘There could be close to a lakh new members and we feel that there would be at least one lakh women members also. The correct figures are expected in the coming days as the two returning officers are busy compiling the data,’ Vishnunadh said.

The minimum age for entry into the Youth Congress is 18 and the maximum age is 35. This time instead of dividing the Youth Congress based on the 14 districts of the state, each of the 20 Lok Sabha constituencies in the state have been divided into two.

Vipin Jose, a member of the Youth Congress who is planning to contest for the post of president from the Thiruvananthapuram Lok Sabha unit said: ‘The best part this time is that it has been made very clear in the rules that one person will have only one party post and hence more number of people can move up the ladder. This time a person can take membership from where he lives only.’

Congress leaders like Rahul Gandhi, Sachin Pilot and Mohammed Azharuddin had come to the state for interaction with Youth Congress members.

BJP, Congress seek time for government formation in Jharkhand

Ranchi, May 31 (IANS) Jharkhand Governor M.O.H. Farook Monday summoned leaders of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the Congress to discuss the formation of an alternative government in the state, a day after Shibu Soren quit as chief minister.

‘The governor called us Monday to know our party’s stand on the formation of an alternative government in the state. We have sought time as the issue will be decided by the central leaders,’ state BJP president Raghubar Das told IANS.

A Congress delegation met Farook immediately after the BJP meeting with the governor.

‘We are not in a hurry to form a government. We will form an alterative government only after ensuring the stability factor,’ state Congress president Pradeep Balmuchu told reporters.

Jharkhand Vikas Morcha-Prajatantrik (JVM-P) president Babulal Marandi also met the governor.

Soren, who heads the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM), met the governor and submitted his resignation Sunday evening, a day before he was to prove his majority in the 81-member state assembly. Sources said that eight of the JMM’s 18 legislators refused to face the trust vote Monday.

The JMM-led five-month-old government was propped up by the BJP with 18 members, the All Jharkhand Students Union (AJSU) with five legislators and the Janata Dal-United’s two members.

The Congress has 14 members, the JVM-P 11, and the Rashtriya Janata Dal five legislators. There also are five independents.

The JMM-led government was reduced to minority after the party’s ally, BJP, finally withdrew support May 24.

After its talks with the BJP collapsed on the issue of sharing power by rotation of 28 months each, the JMM had been in talks with both the Congress and the JVM-P to form an alternative government and avoid President’s Rule in the state.

But with the Congress and its ally JVM-P failing to commit support to the JMM, Soren found no option but to resign.

Jharkhand was plunged into political uncertainty after Soren voted against the BJP’s cut motions on the federal budgetary cuts in Lok Sabha last month.

Defensive Jagan in Delhi to meet Sonia

New Delhi, May 31 (IANS) Under fire for violating the party leadership’s directive and going ahead with a rally in Andhra Pradesh’s volatile Telangana region, Congress MP Y.S. Jaganmohan Reddy is here hoping to meet party president Sonia Gandhi.

The Kadapa MP, whose rally last week led to violence in the Telangana region, defended himself, saying he organised it was for his father, the late chief minister Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy who died in a helicopter crash last year.

‘Whatever I’m doing is for my father. I’m sure the Congress president will understand my point,’ the MP, known as Jagan, told reporters here.

Jagan, who reached the capital Sunday to attend a meeting of the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Finance, has sought an appointment with Gandhi and other senior party leaders, said party sources.

The central leadership of the party had asked him not to conduct the rally in Telangana in view of the tension prevailing there over the separate statehood issue.

Congress leader and Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee Friday asked Jagan to call off his rally.

Defying the directive, Jagan embarked on the rally May 28, triggering violence between his supporters and opponents as he was taken into preventive custody while on his way to Mahbubabad in Warangal district.

Jagan reiterated that the rally was to console family members of those who committed suicide or died of shock following the death of his father, then chief minister, in a helicopter crash last year.

BJP, Cong trade charges on Shahpur violence

R C Faldu says ‘misuse’ of CBI by Congress has encouraged antisocial elements in Gujarat

State BJP president R C Faldu on Wednesday held the Congress responsible for the communal clashes in the walled city area of Ahmedabad, saying the CBI arrest of IPS officer Abhay Chudasama had emboldened antisocial elements.

In a joint press statement, Faldu and BJP national vice-president Parshottam Rupala alleged that the clashes were borne of a conspiracy to defame Gujarat and hinder its development. “With the Congress trying to morally weaken the Gujarat Police by misusing the CBI, the antisocial and anti-national elements are emboldened. The peace loving people of Gujarat will not let such efforts to be successful,” they said.

Reacting to this, Gujarat Congress president Siddharth Patel said the clashes were result of the BJP-led government’s failure. He alleged it was engineered by BJP leaders and workers themselves to divert people’s attention from the CBI probe into the Sohrabuddin Sheikh and Tulsiram Prajapati encounter cases. “The BJP is trying to run away from its responsibilities and hence unnecessarily accusing the Congress,” he said, adding: “It is BJP leaders and workers who are involved in the violence, and not any antisocial element as is being projected by the saffron leaders.”

Venezuela dampen Honduras World Cup farewell with 1-0 win

Honduras embarked on their World Cup adventure with a disappointing 1-0 loss to Venezuela on Wednesday having honoured their Colombian coach Reinaldo Rueda with Honduran nationality before kickoff.

Rueda, a former Colombia coach, was presented with his citizenship document by Honduran national congress president Juan Orlando Hernandez at a buzzing Estadio Olimpico, but the buzz went out of the occasion when Venezuela captain Francisco Flores scored a fine goal early in the second half.

Honduras failed to conjure an equaliser leaving their fans with little more than corners or free kicks near goal to cheer.

Rueda said fatigue in the final stages of the Honduran championship had affected some of his players’ performances.

“We saw that many players who have been playing well in the league did not play well today,” said Rueda, for whom the friendly was useful preparation for his team’s opening Group H match against Chile in Nelspruit on June 16.

Despite the team’s farewell, which included President Porfirio Lobo handing a Honduran flag to team captain Amado Guevara, the players were greeted by largely empty terraces at either end of the 41,000-capacity stadium.

“It’s normal because it didn’t coincide with pay day. It affected (us) quite a bit, the attendance could have been better,” Rueda told the post-match news conference.

“Now we’re going to become elitist and only follow (the team) when England, Germany, Brazil or France come here. Perhaps we didn’t give our rivals due respect and they gave us a great lesson,” he added.

The Hondurans, once the domestic championship is over in early May, will head for a pre-finals training camp in Germany that will include three warm-up matches against Azerbaijan, Belarus and Romania in Austria.

They also face favourites Spain and Switzerland in their group.

Rueda, who took charge of the team in 2007, was granted Honduran citizenship by the country’s congress in an unanimous vote in the capital Tegucigalpa on Tuesday having steered the Central American country to their second World Cup.

Maoists kill Congress leader in Jharkhand

Ranchi (Jharkhand), Mar 31 (ANI): The Maoists shot dead Congress leader Gobardhan Mahali in Jharkhand”s East Singhbhum district to protest against Operation Green Hunt in the state.

Mahali, who was the Congress president of Dalbhumgarh block in East Singhbhum district was killed late on Tuesday night, said police sources.

“Around 25 rebels of Communist Party of India- Maoists (CPI-M) raided Mahali”s house in Maacchbhandhar village and took him towards the jungle area at gunpoint. The Maoists then pumped in three bullets in his head,” said a police official.

The Maoists had earlier warned that it would kill Congress leaders if the operation is not stopped against them.

Earlier on March 24, a group of over 100 Maoists raided a village and gunned down two local leaders of Communist Party of India (Marxist) at Silda in West Medinipur district of West Bengal.

A majority of Maoist rebels have ignored repeated calls from the government to renounce violence and negotiate.

Instead, they have stepped up their attacks in recent months, prompting the government to go after them in a concerted strike.

The Maoist rebels had on February 22 offered a conditional 72-day ceasefire through the media, and said they are willing to talk to the government if it aborts Operation Green Hunt. Many believe the truce offer is a ruse to regroup.

The Maoists contend they are fighting for the rights of the poor, marginal farmers and the landless labourers. (ANI)

Chavan asked to explain Bachchan”s presence at Mumbai Sea Link function

Mumbai, Mar 25 (ANI): Maharashtra Chief Minister Ashok Chavan is in hot water over being seen with Bollywood superstar Amitabh Bachchan at the inaugural function of the second phase of Worli-Bandra sealink.

Party sources said that the Congress high command has taken note of Bachchan”s presence and asked for an explanation from Chavan.

Chavan, however, has clarified his stand saying he would have not attended the function, had he known about Bachchan”s presence.

“Amitabh Bachchan is the brand ambassador of another state. We would like to promote our own state. Perhaps, I would not have attended the function had I known he would be present,” said Chavan, adding that there are reports that some people in the Congress are unhappy about his presence.

Mumbai Congress President Kripashankar Singh said, “I want to clarify that neither the Mumbai Congress nor I was consulted before inviting Amitabh Bachchan.”

Amitabh Bachchan is the brand ambassador for Narendra Modi”s Gujarat – and Modi is a political pariah for the party.

Meanwhile, Bachchan on Thursday said the controversy over his presence at the function had been ”manufactured” by the media.

The superstar in his blog wrote: “A fresh controversy has been rapidly manufactured on my involvement. The media has been hounding me since the event at the sea link has got over, through incessant SMSes.”

The function was organised on Wednesday by Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation (MSRDC), which falls under the PWD Ministry. (ANI)

Former Malaysian PM, MIC chief Samy Vellu engaged in war of words

Putrajaya (Malaysia), Sep 19 (ANI): Former Malaysian Prime Minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad has warned that Malaysian Indian Congress President S. Samy Vellu will become a liability to the Barisan Nasional in the next general election since his leadership has failed.

Mohamad suggested that Samy Vellu should step down and take responsibility for the party’s failure in the last general election.

“If we look at other countries, whenever a leader fails, he resigns. In Japan, he commits harakiri. We’re not asking him to commit harakiri. This is not directed at Samy Vellu alone because there are others who are like him,” The Star Online quoted him, as saying.

“Malaysian leaders still do not understand that when they fail, they should resign of their own volition, no need for others to tell them,” he added.

He said Barisan leaders must admonish Samy Vellu because they were responsible not only for the performance of their own parties but also that of the coalition.

“If I know that a person will cause the BN to lose, that is already a BN problem, no longer an MIC problem. Because of him, the BN lost. Previously, there was no Hindraf. It’s him that the people don’t want but he still wants to be president,” Dr Mohamad said.

On Samy Vellu’s chosen leaders winning last week, Dr Mohamad said they could win party elections, but would lose in the general elections because the people would not support them.

Reacting to Dr Mohamad’s statement, Samy Vellu said the former prime minister who is now calling him a liability had labelled him an asset “when we were winning.”

“His comments are like telling a young wife that she is beautiful and an asset, but when she becomes old, she is branded a liability,” he said. (ANI)

Meanwhile, Dr Mahathir said he did not feel anything about the incident and added: “Nothing would have happened to me.”

Instead, he said he would have felt angry and saddened if Umno members had made such an insult.

“This is not the first time I have been insulted. People might have forgotten how Umno leaders had insulted me. Nazri (Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department Nazri Abdul Aziz) and the previous mentri besar of Kedah wanted me expelled from Umno.

However, then no one gave any reaction. No one dared to say anything,” he said. (ANI)
