Maharashtra activist Anna Hazare ends hunger strike

Ralegaon Siddhi (Maharashtra), Mar 20 (ANI): Noted social activist Anna Hazare on Saturday called off his five-day-old hunger strike after the Maharashtra Government assured to initiate action against corruption in cooperative credit societies.

Maharashtra Cooperatives Minister Harshwardhan Patil, Water Resources Minister Ramraje Naik Nimbalkar and Tribal Minister Babanrao Pachpute flew in by a helicopter from Mumbai to Ralegaon Siddhi and held discussion with Hazare.

At the end of the meeting ministers offered coconut water to Hazare.

Briefing media after the meeting, State Cooperatives Minister Harshwardhan Patil said: “Hazare has agreed to call off the hunger strike after we assured him that the government was serious on acting on his demands.”

On March 16, on the occasion of Gudi Padwa, the Marathi New Year, Hazare started his indefinite hunger strike.

Hazare alleged that the Congress-NCP coalition Government in the State was wasting public money by allowing ministers to spruce up their already well-furnished cabins.

He also opposed the State Government’s decision to promote production of wine distilled from foodgrains, and alleged that a large scale corruption existed in cooperative credit societies.

“The State should give Rs 1,000 crore that bankrupt societies owe their members,” Hazare said.(ANI)

Shiv Sena, BJP announce seat-sharing formula for Maharashtra polls

Mumbai, Sep 19 (ANI): The Shiv Sena-BJP alliance’s seat sharing formula for the forthcoming Maharashtra Assembly elections has been announced at a press conference in Mumbai on Saturday.

The Shiv Sena will contest 169 of the 288 Assembly seats, while the BJP will contest from the other 119.

The Sena-BJP seat-sharing agreement comes a week after the Third Front announced its plan to contest 200 seats.

Although the Congress-NCP has agreed in principle to contest the elections jointly, their list of candidates is yet to be finalized.

Today is the second day for filing nominations for the assembly elections in Maharasthra, 15 nominations were filed on Friday. (ANI)

Congress, NCP may announce Maharashtra poll seat sharing formula on Friday

Mumbai, Sep.16 (ANI): The Congress party and the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) are likely to formally decide on the seat sharing formula for next month’s assembly elections in Maharashtra on Wednesday, but will make the announcement only on Friday, sources here said.

Leaders of the two parties met at Chief Minister Ashok Chavan’s official residence Varsha on Tuesday evening to finally thrash out seat-sharing arrangement.

In the last elections, the Congress had allocated 124 seats to the NCP. This time, however, the Congress wants to give 105 seats to the NCP. Efforts are on to arrive at the compromise figure of 114. (ANI)

Union Cabinet lifts President Rule from Meghalaya

New Delhi, May 8 (ANI): The Union Cabinet today decided to lift the President Rule from Meghalaya, which was imposed on the state on March 19, after dismissal of the Donkupar Roy-led Meghalaya Progressive Alliance government.

With the chances of installation of a government, likely to be headed by former Congress Chief Minister DD Lapang, the Union Cabinet has taken a view of the situation and decided to lift the President’s Rule.

Earlier, talks for the installation of a Congress-NCP ministry in Meghalaya, which was under President’s rule following dismissal of the MPA Government brightened on Friday with both parties finalising modalities to provide a stable government.

“We have made some breakthrough. We have accepted NCP’s offer to join hands. We are finalising the modalities,” Congress leader and former Deputy Chief Minister Mukul Sangma told a news agency.

The 60-member assembly, where Congress has 26 MLAs and NCP 14, was under suspended animation since March 19.

NCP leader P A Sangma and Congress leaders Ahmed Patel and Luizinho Faleiro have held several rounds of meetings in the national capital during the last few days to sort out their differences, sources said. (ANI)

Lakshadweep, the smallest constituency gears up for Parliament elections

Lakshadweep Islands, April 2 (ANI): With the country bracing itself for the upcoming Lok Sabha elections, Islanders in the smallest Union Territory of India, Lakshadweep Islands, are enthusiastic about participating in the elections beginning on April 16.

Lakshadweep Islands, a cluster of 25 isles scattered in the Arabian Sea, remains the smallest of all constituencies in the country with 44,424 electors after the latest delimitation exercise which has witnessed addition of 43 million new voters in the country.

As per the latest released Government data, Uttar Pradesh with 80 parliamentary constituencies has the highest number of electors that is 116,424,101 while Lakshadweep has only 44,424 electors.

Uttar Pradesh also possesses the largest constituency with Unnao which has 18,97,474 electors while Lakshadweep will remain the smallest constituency.

Lakshadweep is the smallest Union Territory of India. This constituency is reserved for Scheduled Tribes, covering the entire UT of Lakshadweep.

The government, on its part, is all geared up for the poll process with mandatory ID cards and polling booths.
It is hoped that, like previous occasions, it will be a peaceful election, as all the parties maintain self-discipline, says the Collector of Lakshadweep Administration.

Since 1971 till 1999 the islanders sent P.M Sayeed, as the lone Member of Parliament on Indian National Congress’s ticket. But, in 2004, Dr. P. Pookunhikoya of Janata Dal (United) and now Nationalist Congress Party candidate won for the first time from here.

In the present elections, all the major political parties like Congress, NCP, BJP and CPI (M) are in the fray. Their supporters are busy preparing to have a full-fledged campaign.

A tough contest between the Congress and the NCP candidates is being widely anticipated here.

Many Islanders believe that the Congress will swipe this time as late P.M. Sayeed had worked for them and this time his son Hamdulla Sayeed is contesting.

“Only congress has helped us for 37 years and no one has brought so much of development to these Islands. Yes, there is one thing, policemen checking at Kochi Port have caused trouble. We all look forward to see the congress winning here then only we Muslims can get some development”, says Surekha Bevi, an elderly lady from Agatti Island.

Some people feel that the newly entered Communist Party has a chance.

“Our hope is that we can send our MP to work for the public from Communist Party and we will win this election,” said R.M Ismail, a resident of Kavaratti Island and a CPI (M) supporter.

In the forthcoming general elections, the number of electors has increased by 6.4 percent, almost 43 million more, from the last Lok Sabha polls in 2004.

The total eligible voters, 71,42,87,814 will use 10.5 lakh electronic voting machines to exercise their franchise at 8.3 lakh polling stations. By Juhan Samuel (ANI)

Congress-NCP will contest polls together in Maharashtra: Antony

New Delhi, Mar 23 (ANI): Congress leader and Union Defence Minister A. K. Antony on Monday announced that his party and the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) would contest the general elections together in Maharashtra.

In a seat-sharing arrangement, the Congress will contest 26 seats while the NCP will try its luck in 22 parliamentary constituencies.

Antony, who is also the Congress in-charge in the state, said both the parties would also explore the possibility of exchange of seats between them in the state.

Meanwhile, the NCP leader and the Civil Aviation Minister Praful Patel said they would also explore the possibility of extending the existing alliance to other states as well. (ANI)

Seat sharing on most Maharashtra seats finalized between Congress-NCP

New Delhi, Mar 10 (ANI): The Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) on Tuesday said that it has finalized seat-sharing agreement with the Congress on most of the parliamentary constituencies of Maharashtra.

NCP spokesperson D.P. Tripathy said his party is part of the United Progressive Alliance (UPA) at the Centre as well as in Maharashtra and talks on remaining seats will be finalized soon.

“The NCP has proposed to contest on 24 seats out of 48 seats, which the Congress Party is not willing to concede. The NCP is part of the UPA, not only at the centre, but also in Maharashtra and Goa, where the two parties are running coalition governments,” Tripathi told reporters here.

He said in other states the NCP would forge alliance with different secular parties, as Congress has refused a national alliance under the banner of the UPA for the forthcoming Lok Sabha polls. (ANI)
