Nepal Telecom to start mobile phone service in Mount Everest region

Kathmandu – Nepal’s largest mobile phone service provider Nepal Telecom Saturday announced plans to start services in the Mount Everest region enabling climbers to make phone calls from the top of the world’s highest peak. The plans to install mobile phone service in the Everest region are to connect the last few isolated areas in Nepal with the rest of the country and the world.

“We plan to expand our service in Khumbu trekking area and to the top of the world by July,” said Bishwonath Goyal, director Nepal Telecom’s of Mobile Service Directorate. “This will also help climbers attempting to reach the summit of Mount Everest to disseminate information about their success faster.”

The Khumbu region is a popular trekking destination for tourists on their way to Everest region, which until now has very limited communication facilities.

“We plan to install a V-SAT station at Goraksep near Everest base camp which will be linked to Kathmandu,” Nepal Telecom spokesman Surendra Prasad Thike said. “This will allow people to make calls from the summit of 8,848-metre-high Mount Everest.”

“We are starting this service for the benefit of tourists and climbers,” Thike said.

Until now climbers have had to rely on expensive satellite phones to connect to the rest of the world from Everest base camp.

It is hoped the facility will also help local people as well as in emergency rescue situations.

Earlier this week, an internet café opened for service at Gorakse of Khumjung at an altitude of 5,180 metres above sea level. The area is close to Everest base camp. (dpa)

Repolling underway in Arunachal Pradesh

Itanagar, Apr 20 (ANI): Repolling is taking place amidst tight security in 13 booths in the Arunachal West Parliamentary constituency on Monday.

Polling here was affected during the first phase on April 16 due to incidents of booth capturing and breaking of Electronic Voting Machines.

While eight of these polling stations are located in the state capital, one is in Doimukh near Itanagar and two each in upper and lower Subansiri Districts respectively.

Arunachal Pradesh has recorded over 50 percent polling in the two parliamentary constituencies of Arunachal East and Arunachal West in the first phase of polling.

However, reports from interior places are yet to reach because of lack of communication facilities.

Last time 56.06 percent polling was recorded in the two constituencies.

Meanwhile, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has informed the Election Commission that it would launch protests if the demand for repoll in three more polling stations in the state capital is not met. (ANI)

President inducts high-tech VVIP jets in Indian Air Force

New Delhi, Apr. 1 (ANI): President Pratibha Patil has inducted the new state-of-the-art VVIP jets into the Indian Air Force before going on board its maiden flight to Assam and Arunachal Pradesh.

The new jets can double as an office-in-the sky and a command centre in an emergency situation, like a nuclear attack.

“The trip would now be more business like. We will get more time to study, concentrate and apply our minds as the flight will be more smooth,” said Patil at the inauguration ceremony.

The sparkling white Boeing Business Jet has been designed on the line of the US President’s famous Air Force One aircraft and comes equipped with a wide range of security cover and latest communication devices.

“The aircraft has some of the finest high technology systems and is equipped with excellent communication systems,” said Air Chief Marshal Pradeep Vasant Naik.

The 60-passenger-capacity aircraft has four sections. The first or presidential section is decorated with light and dark wooden panels with six leather seats.

Another section has a bedroom for the President in which all the major entertainment and communication facilities are available. The other two sections are for senior officials travelling with the President or the Prime Minister.

The aircraft is equipped with modern hi-tech missile defense system, which includes a protection suite and chaff dispensers to ward off missile threats besides other security gadgets.

The jets, powered by two CFM-56 engines respectively, manufactured by US General Electric and French Snecma, are designed to have long range flights. The planes can fly at the height of 41,000 feet at a speed of 410 knots.

While one of the three jets inducted into the IAF’s Headquarters Communication Squadron is meant exclusively for the President and the Prime Minister, the other is for ferrying special guests and senior ministers. The third jet would be on a stand-by.
