Beware of rumour mongers: Omar to people

Srinagar, Jun 6 (PTI) People should not fall prey to emotional blackmailing and beware of rumour mongers bent upon disturbing peace for vested interests, Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah has said. Shutdown by Maoists in Nepal affects industries

Marchwar (Nepal), May 18 (ANI): The Maoist insurgency in Marchwar district of Nepal has led to huge industrial losses, as both industrialists and workers are facing problems due to recent shutdown called by the Maoists.

Talking to reporters, Bidur Dhungana, General Manager of Jagdamba Cement, said: ” The shutdown has affected transport services because of which the goods are not delivered on time.

“The shutdown has affected transport services because of which in the hilly areas, there is lack of food supply…common people are not receiving the supply on time, which has led to increase in prices, and instead of industrial growth there is a downfall. If the situation remains the same it shall worsen things for the country,” Dhungana said.

The daily-wage worker has been the most affected by the shutdowns.

“The situation has led to problems. What will the common man do in case of such shutdowns? How will they earn? How will we pay them salary? For businessmen, it”s not that huge a concern but for those who survive on daily wages, for them it”s a huge concern,” said Ganesh K Nelsan, Managing Director of Ayur Shri Private Limited.

Manufactured goods are not reaching the market on time, which has affected supply and demand, both.

Even though large-scale industries are surviving, cottage and small-scale industries are facing a lot of problems.

The shutdowns are threatening the entire economy of Nepal, as they have already hit the industrial sector hard.

On May 9, police had scuffled with Maoists supporters and fired teargas shells after demonstrators tried to picket a government building in Kathmandu.

The violence came a day after the Maoists called off an indefinite strike on May 8 demanding that the government step down.

The strike, which shutdown shops and stopped all transportation entirely, had literally paralysed the Himalayan nation since May 2.

The strike was called off due to both domestic and international pressure on the Maoists to find a more peaceful means to get their message through. (ANI)

Coastal security beefed up in Kerala

Kochi (Kerala), May 16 (ANI): The coastal security in Kerala has been increased with the state police inducting high-speed boats to patrol the shoreline and backwaters.

A fleet of around 47 boats along with a specially trained police team has been deployed for the purpose.

The 6.8-metre-long boats can be controlled by a remote device and seat up to six policemen.

A colourful regatta ceremony in the backwaters of Kochi district marked the launch of the new service.

“Backwater security is an integral part of coastal security as far as we are concerned. With that perception, we are trying to implement the scheme throughout the length of Kerala. High-speed boats patrol the waterways constantly so that any interlocutor or somebody, who has intercepted or somebody, who has escaped into the backwaters, we are able to chase him and we are able to catch him,” said Kerala Director-General of Police Jacob Punnoose.

“This will also ensure that along the waterways, which a large number of tourists and common people use, crime, which is becoming a problem will also be addressed by the police. These boats will be used in a consultant manner to prevent such activities,” he added.

Eight new coastal police stations are expected to be fully functional within the next three months in Kerala.

India has initiated several measures to beef security all along its over 7,500 kilometers long coast in the aftermath of the 26/11 Mumbai terror attacks. (ANI)

Trauma of Manipur violence victims

Imphal, May 5 (ANI): Manipur has been affected by militant violence for a long time and the worst sufferers are the common people.

Here is a family that was a victim of militant violence and see how they are coping with the loss of their loved one.

The simple and happy life of the family of late Singam Premananda Singh, came to an end after his death.

Premananda, the sole bread earner of the family was killed in an explosion engineered by a militant outfit at Pourabi Road in Manipur on 16th December 2007 along with six other people.

Almost four years later, the dreadful incident still haunts his family.

Premananda has left behind an aged mother, his wife and three children who live in the shadow of poverty.

Ibemma, his wife, now weaves clothes and does other menial labour to keep the family afloat.

“We are facing untold hardships after his death. I’m old and unable to work. Now, all the responsibility of the family has fallen on my daughter-in-law’s shoulder. No one is there to look after us,” said Thamchet Devi, mother of a victim.

The Sstate Government gave Rs one lakh to assist the Singam family and promised to provide assistance in future as well.

Still, Ibemma finds it difficult to make both ends meet and provide a future to her children.

Sometimes, she finds it difficult juggling different roles, but she sees hope in her children’s eyes and is inspired to soldier on.

“It is very difficult to manage and run the family all alone. I have to raise my children, take part in locality’s social services and earn money as well. Even leading a simple life is hard for us,” said Ibemma Devi, wife of a victim.

Manipur has more than 30 militant groups and extortion, abductions and bomb attacks happen quite regularly in the state.

“They (militants) must think about the consequences of their actions, which normally affect innocent people. People are suffering unnecessarily due to their mindless acts. We are against them,” Devi added.

The story doesn’t end with the Singam family; there are several other families that have suffered a similar fate.

Here are many families like that of Premananda who have been victims of militants’ activities in the state.

People in the state live in fear that the same fate could befall them at any time. (ANI)

Mukherjee admits fuel hike has hit commoners

New Delhi, Mar 17 (ANI): Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee has admitted that the hike in fuel price has affected the life of the middle class families and lower income groups.Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee has admitted that the hike in fuel price has affected the life of the middle class families and lower income groups.

“I do know that when prices go up, common people suffer, poor people suffer. It is not unknown. But at the same time you can”t ignore the fact that when you are to import certain commodities at high prices, it will have to be reflected somewhere,” he said in the course of his reply in the Rajya Sabha on Tuesday.

He also noted how the import of commodities at higher prices leads to inflation.

“Noticing the volatile behaviour of the petroleum prices, and this is a common knowledge it does not require to be an economic expert that when the recovery in the industrialised countries, in Europe and North America start in full swing, there will be higher demand of oil and there is a propensity of oil prices going up,” he said.

In the Union Budget for the year 2010-11 that Mukherjee had presented, the basic customs duty of five per cent on crude, 7.5 per cent on diesel and petrol and ten per cent on other refined products were levied.

He also raised the excise duty on petrol and diesel by one rupee per litre each to begin a process of fiscal consolidation. Immediately, oil companies had raised the prices of petrol and diesel across the country.

Mukherjee also raised excise duty across the board on all non-petroleum products by two per cent to 10 per cent and brought in more services in the tax net. (ANI)

Musharraf must be prosecuted to end Army’s interference in country’s politics: Sharif

Lahore, Sep.5 (ANI): Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) chief Nawaz Sharif has said that prosecuting former President General Pervez Musharraf under high treason charges for taking ‘extrajudicial’ actions on November 3, 2007 would help resolve all crises facing the country currently.

Interacting with party workers at his Raiwind residence, Sharif said trying Musharraf would ensure that the door to military interference in the country’s politics would be closed for good.

“Today’s Constitutional crisis is the result of the military coup on October 12, 1999,” The News quoted Sharif, as saying.

“If common people and former prime ministers can face trials then why a military dictator, who violated the Constitution twice, should not be prosecuted?” the former Prime Minister asked.

Meanwhile, senior PML-N leader Ghous Ali Shah has rebutted reports regarding Sharif being involved in the ‘secret’ deal which saw Musharraf stepping down from the Presidency.

Shah said if Musharraf is not prosecuted under Article Six of the Constitution, then it will have a serious effect on the country’s democratic set-up.

“A military dictator contested elections in uniform with the permission of the courts and abrogated the constitution twice but if he was pardoned, then democracy would never consolidate,” Shah said.

He said the current infighting between the PML-N and MQM was temporary and situation would normalize soon.

“Nothing is final in politics and doors are not closed. Situation and time compel parties to talk to each other,” Shah added. (ANI)

Strike is an injustice to common people: Omar Abdullah

Srinagar, July 2 (ANI): As the strike call given by the hardline faction of the separatist Hurriyat Conference continued for the third consecutive day in Kashmir, Chief Minister Omar Abdullah termed it a grave injustice to the common people whose earnings have been seriously affected.

“The strike does not affect my earnings, it affects the poor people who earn in these two to three months and can use it for the rest of the year, be it houseboat owners, taxi drivers. It is pure injustice for these people,” Abdullah said.

“The people who call for strikes should understand this. If they want to punish the government they should look for other ways to do so. They are punishing common Kashmiris, which I believe is grave injustice,” he added.

Because of the strike during the tourist season, daily wage earners like labourers, taxi drivers, houseboat owners and shopkeepers are suffering the most.

“It is the labour class that is suffering. For employees, they take their salary by the end of the month, but it is the labourers who suffer,” said Reyaz Ahmad, a resident.

The hike in the fuel prices will burden the people already reeling under the impact of recession. It may trigger talk of further freight hike by the transporters.

“The price of petrol and diesel was hiked by four rupees and two rupees respectively. Let’s see what happens in future. The price hike will cause many problems for the common man, but we can’t say how much further increase there will be in the prices of fuel,” said Ishmeet Singh, another customer.

Prices were last raised in June last year, when the average price of India’s crude imports were 113 dollar a barrel, but they were cut in December and again in January as oil prices tumbled.

The government has not increased the price of cooking gas and kerosene to protect the poor and middle-class.
