Traditional ‘Kahika Fair’ celebrated in Himachal Pradesh

Kullu (Himachal Pradesh), May 29 (ANI): Thousands of devotees converged to celebrate the traditional ‘Kahika Fair’ in Shirar village, near Himachal Pradesh’s Kullu town on Friday.

Sounds of hymns in the air marked the beginning of the festival in the village that was adorned with colourful canopies.

An important ritual observed during the festival is a mock sacrificial ceremony of a member of Naur (a tribe) and getting his life back from the gods.

“It is a common belief that during the festival all gods and goddesses come under a tree and an arrow is shot in the air. The arrow is considered so powerful that it takes the life of the Naur and he is declared dead,” said Rajesh Sharma, a local.

“Then the gods and goddesses use their prowess to give life to the dead Naur,” he added.

The natives here believe that the prayers performed during the festival sanctify the village and purify the souls of the people participating in it.

“The rituals performed during the Kahika festival purify the area and shuns evil spirits and that is why the sacrifice of the Naur’s life is performed and he comes back to life,” said Arun Kumar, a local.

Kumar appeared confident that the festival would bring prosperity in the village.

“This year the Naur-Megha-Yajna (a ritual performed in which a person from the Naur tribe is declared dead and is brought back to life by observing ceremonial prayers) was conducted peacefully and it will bring happiness and prosperity among us,” said Arun Kumar. (ANI)

Bored by Mourinho, Roma’s gladiators fight to the end

AS Roma have summoned the gladiator spirit of their ancient city in a final bid to wrestle the Serie A title from Inter Milan and coach Jose Mourinho.

Leaders Inter, two points above Roma, visit Siena on Sunday (1300 GMT) on the final day of the league season while their title rivals travel to Chievo.

Roma captain Francesco Totti met actor Russell Crowe, star of the film Gladiator, inside Rome’s Colosseum for a publicity photo shoot and Roma boss Claudio Ranieri was keen to take the analogy further.

“We still have lots of nervous energy and want to satisfy our fans — they are our true gladiators. We want to reward our fans with one last triumph,” Ranieri told a news conference on Saturday.

Inter’s colourful coach Mourinho, whose side meet Bayern Munich in the Champions League final next weekend, continued his Serie A press blackout on Saturday but has still managed to sneak in a few jibes at Roma in recent weeks.

He is facing an Italian soccer federation probe for joking Roma would pay relegated Siena to beat Inter and slammed Ranieri for taking his side to the movies ahead of their Italian Cup final defeat by his team earlier this month.

Ranieri has had enough of the man who succeeded him at Chelsea.

“Clearly I’m very much in his heart because he talks about me often. Honestly I don’t care what he thinks or says, in fact, he bores me,” Ranieri said.

Coastal security beefed up in Kerala

Kochi (Kerala), May 16 (ANI): The coastal security in Kerala has been increased with the state police inducting high-speed boats to patrol the shoreline and backwaters.

A fleet of around 47 boats along with a specially trained police team has been deployed for the purpose.

The 6.8-metre-long boats can be controlled by a remote device and seat up to six policemen.

A colourful regatta ceremony in the backwaters of Kochi district marked the launch of the new service.

“Backwater security is an integral part of coastal security as far as we are concerned. With that perception, we are trying to implement the scheme throughout the length of Kerala. High-speed boats patrol the waterways constantly so that any interlocutor or somebody, who has intercepted or somebody, who has escaped into the backwaters, we are able to chase him and we are able to catch him,” said Kerala Director-General of Police Jacob Punnoose.

“This will also ensure that along the waterways, which a large number of tourists and common people use, crime, which is becoming a problem will also be addressed by the police. These boats will be used in a consultant manner to prevent such activities,” he added.

Eight new coastal police stations are expected to be fully functional within the next three months in Kerala.

India has initiated several measures to beef security all along its over 7,500 kilometers long coast in the aftermath of the 26/11 Mumbai terror attacks. (ANI)

Mick Jagger’s success mantra

Washington, September 14 (ANI): Sir Mick Jagger, who was famous for his hellraiser behavior in his youth, has admitted that just partying doesn’t make one successful in life.

“You can’t give into temptation all your life, otherwise you’d have no through line; you’d never get anything finished,” Contactmusic quoted him as telling Britain’s Vogue magazine.

“But it’s absolutely no fun at all unless you give into temptation some of your life. If you never do, you’re really boring and dull,” he added.

Also, the Rolling Stones frontman said that staying in hotels often has inspired him to make his home colourful and exciting.

“Hotel life has influenced my decorative tastes quite negatively. Because you say, ‘Right, I don’t want any brown or beige.’ Because most hotels go in for neutral colours – they don’t want to offend anybody,” he said. (ANI)

Mela Patt fair celebrated in Bhaderwah in Jammu and Kashmir

Bhaderwah (Jammu and Kashmir), Aug 28(ANI): Colourful folk dances marked the annual three-day fair ‘Mela Patt’ celebrations in Bhaderwah sub-division of Jammu and Kashmir’s Doda district.

The festival, which concluded on Thursday, is celebrated every year after it was started by Raja Nagpal, the 16th century ruler of the then small principality of Bhaderkashi, now known as Bhaderwah.

The festival begins on Naag Panchami, festival dedicated to honour the snake God.

According to folklore, Mughal emperor Akbar wanted to make Raja Nagpal bow to him, but Nagpal would not bow before anyone except his Lord Vasuki Naag. The emperor summoned Nagpal and ordered to sever his head. But, when king’s men tried to cut his head a serpent came out from his turban.

Impressed by Nagpal’s spiritual powers, Akbar awarded him with a golden pot with precious stones and costly velvet robes embroidered with gold and silver as a token of his devotion to Vasuki Naag.

Every year during the festival the devotees take out a procession of the gifts presented to Nagpal.

“The pot you see was gifted by emperor Akbar to Raja Nagpal and every year it is taken out for display to the locals,” said Hari Krishan, a local.

The festival sees enthusiasts from across north-India, as they believe that their wishes will come true if they pray earnestly.

“Not only people from Jammu and Kashmir, but from people across north India come to see the festival. There is a saying that if someone asks for a wish it comes true,” said Naresh Gupta, another local.

INIFD hosts ‘Vibrance 2009′ fashion show in Mumbai

Mumbai, June 25 (ANI): Top models walked down the ramp on Wednesday evening wearing exquisite collections designed by students of a fashion institute here during its annual fashion show.

Organised by International Institute of Fashion Design (INIFD), the fashion show titled ‘Vibrance 2009′ had a ‘Moods and Colours 2020′ as its theme.

Models walked down the ramp in colourful and fascinating costumes designed by budding designers of the institute.

Femina Miss India World 2009 Pooja Chopra also walked the ramp as the showstopper. She wooed the audience with her walk. She appreciated the creativity and originality of students’ creations.

“Trust me, I like doing students’ shows because after five yrs down the line they will be big designers because they are budding designers of today. Their creativity and imagination is way different. They do not try to ape any other existing designers; they do not try to ape the west. It is all their imagination. So it is very special to them,” said Pooja Chopra.

Choreographer of the show Rohit Verma said that the best part of the show was that it was not too much expanded in all aspects.

“The best thing about the show was like there were limited garments, six girls, two guys and one kid. It was fun doing it and I enjoyed every moment of it. The clothes were very dramatic and the scenes were very good so I enjoyed every bit of it,” said Rohit Verma.

The show offered a big platform to promote budding and future designers from this fashion-designing institute. (ANI)

Eggs sales double over Easter in Hungary, producers still worried

Budapest – Demand for eggs is set to outstrip supply in Hungary as millions are being bought in the run up to Easter, a local financial paper reported on Tuesday.

The Hungarian Poultry Produce Council estimates that around 100 million eggs per week – or ten for every Hungarian – will be bought in the run up to Easter.

This is roughly double the normal level of consumption, already among the highest in the world at around 300 eggs per Hungarian per year.

Hungarians still prefer hen’s eggs to factory-made chocolate Easter eggs.

As in many countries in Central and Eastern Europe, they are hand painted with colourful and often amazingly intricate designs.

However, it is not all good news for the Hungarian egg trade.

“This year domestic producers can barely meet demand, what with several plants having closed recently and many producers giving up,” said council secretary Peter Foldi.

Foldi told the business daily Napi Gazdasag that he expects many more Hungarian producers to quit in coming months amid pressure from cheap imports, especially from Poland.

Furthermore, the European Union’s “Laying Hen Directive” must be implemented in all member states by 2012, outlawing factory farms where thousands of chickens are kept in batteries of tiny cages

“My submitting money collected as people’s contribution is not symbolic. It is a sign of people’s participation,’ Mallika told reporters.

“Democracy has become by the politician, for the politician, of the politician,” Mallika told reporters. Mallika has chosen the nagara (drum) as her election symbol followed by kite and harmonium as options.

“It will be better if more people come into politics — philosophers and intellectuals. I tell them this is your chance for clean politics. If you want to prove that this nation can be better, come join politics. Let us change it”, she said.

Party colours rub off on rosogolla

New Delhi, April 1 (IANS) The sandesh and rosogolla are usually brown or white in colour. But India’s colourful election exercise seems to be rubbing off on West Bengal’s famed sweets too.

A sweetmeat shop in Howrah district has started making green and orange coloured sweets – the colours of the Congress and the Trinamool Congress.

‘We thought of doing something different for the upcoming polls and then decided to make sweets in party colours,’ shop-owner Keshto Haldar said.

Enthusiastic workers of the two parties are thronging the shop in large numbers to have their share of colourful sweets after a hard day’s work.

‘It feels great to have sweets made in the colours of our party,’ said a Congress party worker, gorging down some coloured rosogollas.
