Brit school bans sexually coloured ‘shagbands’

London, Sep 19 (ANI): A Brit primary school has banned its students form wearing coloured wristbands, after parents found out that they were called “shagbands”.

Parents of kids, attending Rayne Primary School near Braintree, Essex, discovered that each colour of the ‘shagband’ represents a different sex act.

“The children have been walking around with these rubber bands on calling them shagbands,” the Daily Star quoted mum-of-three Andrea Elward, 46, whose 10-year-old daughter studies in the school, as saying.

“My daughter said her friends had got them and could she have a set. Then she went red and giggled when she explained they were called shagbands.

“I had a word with the head and they banned them immediately,” she added. (ANI)

New test to detect tainted milk

Washington, Sept 13 (ANI): Researchers have developed a simple test that would help detect tainted milk within few hours.

Amer AbuGhazaleh, from Southern Illinois University Carbondale’s College of Agricultural Sciences, and Salam Ibrahim, a food microbiologist from North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University, have shown that the combination of certain bacteria and a common purple dye can reveal the presence of toxins in milk in just a few hours.

“To date, detecting the presence of toxins or pesticides has only been possible by sending samples to a laboratory and waiting a few days for the results,” said AbuGhazaleh.

“An important step toward improving the safety of our dairy supply would be the development of an effective, simple and rapid test that would allow farmers or processors to detect the presence of foreign substances,” the expert added.

During the study, the scientists decided to focus on the bacteria that ferment lactose (milk’s sugars), producing lactic acid.

“For one thing, these bacteria already exist in milk, so if you add some, you’re not doing anything strange,” said AbuGhazaleh.

“Second, they produce a change over time (the lactic acid) that we could monitor. If we didn’t see the change, we would know something was wrong,” the expert said.

They began in 2008 with a few bacterial strains they already had and cyanide, also readily available. Experiments showed not only that the toxin could slow or stop lactic acid production but that this effect increased with the toxic load. Further, the effect appeared in less than four hours.

They then added purple dye to milk samples containing both toxins and bacteria and to samples containing only bacteria.

After eight hours, dye in the non-toxic milk turned yellow, indicating the presence of increased lactic acid, while dye in the toxin-laden milk retained its original purple.

“This kind of colour test could be performed by farmers themselves,” AbuGhazleh said.

“They could add the bacteria and the dye to a sample, leave it alone for a little while and then come back to see if there is any change in the color. If there isn’t, there are problems with the milk,” he added. (ANI)

London, September 12 (ANI): He was born blind and has never seen a single match in his life, but has proved that all one requires to become a great cricket commentator is a mix of erudite descriptions of action, comprehensive knowledge of great players, faultless recall of statistics, and needle-sharp sense of timing and judgment.

Needless to say, Zimbabwean-born Dean du Plessis, 32, possesses all these attributes, and has been delivering commentaries on matches for nine years.

He has shared the commentary box in Tests, one-day, and Twenty20 tournaments involving all the Test-playing nations in worldwide radio broadcasts.

The commentators he has worked with include Tony Cozier, Geoffrey Boycott, Ravi Shastri, and Australia’s former spin bowler Bruce Yardley, who himself lost an eye.

In 2004, du Plessis and Yardley made the first ever team to deliver a commentary with a single eye between them.

It is du Plessis’s accentuated sense of hearing that makes up for being sightless.

He relies upon sounds heard via the stump microphones to tell who is bowling from the footfalls and grunts, a medium or fast delivery by the length of time between the bowler’s foot coming down, and the impact of the ball on the pitch.

He can tell whether a delivery was a yorker from the sound of the bat ramming down on the ball, whether a ball is on the off or on-side, and when it’s hit a pad rather than bat.

When the wicketkeeper’s voice goes flat, du Plessis tells him a draw is in the offing.

Though he can’t play the role in the commentary box of the anchor, du Plessis can tell from the crowd noise whether a ball has been gathered in a fielder’s hands or spilled.

“I have to work with the anchor. I am the guy who supplies, well, the colour,” Times Online quoted him as saying.

Andy Pycroft, the Zimbabwean opening batsman from 1979 to 2001, said: “The thing about Dean is the intuition. The public love to listen to him. If he has the right person at anchor to support him he is brilliant.”

Du Plessis hated the “blind cricket” he was taught to play with a plastic-wrapped volleyball at the blind school he attended.

At 14, while feeling bored one day, du Plessis tuned the radio in to a station devoted to ball-by-ball commentaries, and that was what was to change his life.

“There was a phenomenal noise in the background, 80,000 people in a stadium in India, people roaring. I realised it was cricket. I was fascinated,” du Plessis said.

He pushed his way into the commentary box at Harare Sports Club in 2001, and was allowed to try out with the microphone.

Phulan Rani, the ageless painter of Punjab

Amritsar, Sep.11 (ANI): Defying her age, octogenarian Phulan Rani today stands as a tall figure that inspires the youth by her love for painting and deep urge to give creative expressions to her thoughts and observations of the world around her.

A resident of Amritsar, Phulan Rani works in both oils and water colour and paints realistic landscapes and portraits of local leaders.

“I was born on Dec 12, 1923 and have seen various ups and downs during my life span. I have been inspired to paint from all good things in life and the thoughts and the preaching of the gurus that I have heard,” said Phulan Rani, the painter. She is a nature lover by heart.

“Nature is like an open book as we can see many beautiful things through it. Like honeybees collecting nectar from the flowers and then constructing hives. It inspires an artist to paint. The inspiration also comes from beautiful faces, flowers, landscapes and the teachings of the gurus,” she says.

Phulan Rani is full of pride when she realizes how her work has reached in different parts of the world.

“A person can be successful in any sort of work if he or she gets full support from his life partner and children. You can imagine the work done by me through the paintings hanging on the walls of my house. I have sold a number of paintings, but I had enough time to paint replicas of those sold paintings to keep at home. My paintings have reached across the world,” says Phulan.

Day/night test idea unlikely soon in absence of suitable ball

Sydney, Sep 11 (ANI): The idea of day-night Test between England and Bangladesh next year is unlikely to proceed because a suitable ball is yet to be developed.

The idea of day-night Tests was floated by the lawmakers of the game, the MCC, at a World Cricket Committee meeting at Lord’s in July to enhance the profile and appeal of the long format.

There is no indication to suggest that how much time it would take to develop the right ball, even as the England and Wales Cricket Board and Bangladesh Cricket Board would be happy to play the first ever day-night Test.

Researchers have been working on balls that could be used for day-night Tests, although testing on a pink version has uncovered excessive movement and grip issues that have made prototypes too dangerous to trial in matches, while the colour also wears off quickly.

With England’s domestic season concluding this weekend, there will be little opportunity to trial a day-night Test ball before the series against Bangladesh next year. And the ICC will not allow a ball to be used in a Test before it is used successfully at domestic level.

Other issues also remain unresolved, such as the colour of players’ uniforms and how playing conditions could be affected by the changes in light, The Sydney Morning Herald reports. (ANI)

Original Walt Disney drawings found in an attic office in Blackpool

London, Sep 9 (ANI): Original Walt Disney drawings have been recovered from an attic office in Blackpool, which could be worth up to 12,000 pounds each.

The 15 mint condition black and white and colour drawings were in the middle of hundreds of files gathered in over a century of Blackpool Illuminations.

Altogether the files have been valued at 500,000 pounds for insurance purposes, but it is thought the original Disney drawings alone could fetch up to 180,000 pounds altogether should they be auctioned off.

The material is being catalogued, and will be archived for future public viewing for the first time.

The Disney drawings had been sent from Hollywood to Blackpool by Walt Disney himself.

His studio was first approached in 1953 by Blackpool Council’s Illuminations staff, when they wanted to include characters, including Mickey Mouse, in their tableaux.

One of the drawings featuring Mickey shows how they wanted to animate him for the Golden Mile, but Disney demanded the characters be totally accurate to the original cinema blockbusters, and so sent off artists’ work to the English resort.

“The attic room is actually part of one of Blackpool’s original farmhouses built long before the town became a seaside resort,” the Telegraph quoted Colette Halstead, Illuminations’ creative development coordinator, as saying.

“The Illuminations department has just grown round it over the decades and old files and equipment like the ex Army field telephones used to co-ordinate the seven mile switch on were stored there.

“We are slowly moving to new premises and we were asked to catalogue the room’s contents when we came across the Disney material,” she added. (ANI)

Song birds have to deal with cover artists too

Washington, Sep 9 (ANI): Just like great singers among humans, birds too have to deal with cover artists who copy songs.

A new research has revealed that some bird species have evolved to sing the same tune as their rivals, in order to compete effectively.

Led by Dr. Joseph Tobias and Dr Nathalie Seddon from the Edward Grey Institute, University of Oxford, the research team analysed the calls and songs of two antbird species that were living side-by-side in the Amazon rainforest- the Peruvian warbling-antbird and the yellow-breasted warbling-antbird.

The study was aimed at investigating their similar songs, and, in particular, at testing the theory that the birds’ songs could become increasingly similar to enable effective communication between competing species.

The above notion has attracted controversy as many scientists have argued that convergence in territorial or mating signals results in needless confrontation or crossbreeding and the creation of hybrids.

“Biologists have long been fascinated by convergence in ecological traits as it offers tangible evidence of evolution and the forces of selection by which it operates, but until now there is no clear evidence that social competition between animal species can produce convergent signals. We examined this idea by analysing the structure and function of songs in two birds which we knew to be strong social competitors,” said Tobias.

The researchers studied the species in Peru and Bolivia at one site where they lived together, and two sites where they lived in isolation.

Firstly, they recorded three sets of signals-songs, calls, and plumage colour of both species (including a total of 504 songs from 150 individuals).

Later, they played them back to individuals of each species to test the significance of songs of both types.

The results showed that territorial songs of both species were extremely similar particularly where they lived together, such that territorial birds treated songs of both species as equally threatening.

In the meantime, they discovered that non-territorial signals like calls and plumage were highly divergent.

“In effect, the territorial songs of these birds are more or less interchangeable in design and function. Given that they last shared a common ancestor more than 3 million years ago, it is almost equivalent to humans and chimpanzees – which diverged around 5 million years ago – using the same language to settle disputes over resources” said Tobias.

“Our results provide the first compelling evidence that social interaction can cause convergent evolution in species competing for space and resources.

They also suggest that while competition drives convergence in territorial songs, this is offset by divergence in non-competitive signals such as plumage colour to promote species recognition and reduce the chance of interbreeding,” he added.

NASA all set to launch infrared eye to hunt for dark asteroids

Sydney, September 3 (ANI): NASA is preparing to launch an infrared telescope that will hunt down dark asteroids that have slipped beneath our radar.

According to a report by ABC Science, the Wide-field Infrared Survey Explorer (WISE) spacecraft recently arrived at Vandenberg Air Force Base in California ahead of its launch later this year.

With a quartet of infrared sensors and a wide view, WISE is designed to survey the whole sky in infrared light.

It’s not the first telescope to do so, but scientists expect WISE’s observations will be 500 times sharper than a survey conducted in 1980s by IRAS, the Infrared Astronomical Satellite, according to astronomer Martin Cohen of the University of California at Berkeley.

The data will be complied into an all-sky infrared atlas, a tome that is expected to include about 300 million objects, including around 100,000 asteroids.

Many of the asteroids seen by WISE will be known objects.

Scientists hope to use the new observations to nail down details, such as an asteroid’s diameter and surface reflectivity.

“With ground-based scopes, it’s just a point source. You can’t tell size directly,” said University of Texas astronomer Dr Robert McMillan who leads Spacewatch, an asteroid-survey project.

“A big object that is dark and a small object that is bright are going to look like they have the same brightness,” he added.

The solar system contains several million asteroids, most of which reside in the main asteroid belt between Mars and Jupiter.

About 7000 asteroids have been identified that cross or come close to Earth’s orbit.

WISE will be able to spot asteroids emitting heat due to direct exposure from the Sun, as opposed to visible-light searches that find asteroids that are reflecting sunlight.

“Those are two different physical effects,” said McMillan. “An asteroid that has very dark colour in invisible light is going to get heated up more, just like a black car in a parking lot is going to get heated up more than a white car,” he added.

Scientists hope to get enough positioning information to follow up targets with ground-based observations.

McMillan expects that WISE will discover a few hundred new asteroids.

The information will be folded into ongoing surveys to map asteroids that could impact Earth and cause widespread damage.

Other WISE targets include brown dwarfs, which are Jupiter-sized stars that never got their nuclear fusion engines running, and ultra-luminous galaxies, which pump out the equivalent of about 1000 Sun-sized stars every year. (ANI)

Bhajji fined for breaking Chandigarh traffic rules with his Hummer

Chandigarh, Sep. 1 (ANI): Driving his dream Hummer landed Indian off-spinner Harbhajan Singh in trouble on Tuesday, when he was fined by Chandigarh traffic police for using the vehicle without a valid number plate.

Singh had to pay a 3000-rupee fine for the offence, according to reports.

Assistant Commissioner of Police (traffic), H S Doon, told reporters that this episode would promote better traffic sense among the general public.

The off-spinner became the latest Indian cricketer to buy the American SUV after skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni.

Harbhajan imported the car from England, which costs about 70 lakh rupees in India. After paying the duty, the cost of the vehicle has come to one crore rupees.

While Dhoni’s Hummer is silver in colour, Harbhajan has opted for a “Black Beauty”.

Harbhajan is also looking forward to shifting to a new home.

The house is under construction in the New Baradari area of the city. The plot was given by the state government for his outstanding performance in the 2001 home series against Australia.

However, he has no plans to sell off his ancestral home where he was brought up.

Counting duplicated genome segments now possible with new computational method

London, August 31 (ANI): Counting copies of duplicated genome sequences and doing initial analyses of their contents are possible with the aid of a new computational method, according to a study.

Led by scientists at the University of Washington (UW), the study suggests that the number of copies of particular DNA segments can differ from one person to the next.

The researchers use the term mrFAST, an acronym for micro-read Fast Alignment Search Tool, to refer to the novel method.

In their study report, they have highlighted the fact that segmental duplications in the human genome have been associated with susceptibility and resistance to disease.

The report points out that duplicated segments have been linked to such disorders as lupus, Crohn’s disease, mental retardation, schizophrenia, colour blindness, psoriasis, and age-related macular degeneration.

It adds that segmental duplications often contain duplicated genes, many of which have an unknown function, and that individuals have different numbers of copies of some of these duplications.

The researchers write that determining the number, content, and location of segmental duplications is an important step in understanding the health significance of gene copy-number variation.

“New computational methods, combined with next-generation DNA sequencing technology, has provided for the first time an accurate census of specific genes that exist in varying number of copies,” Nature magazine quoted Alkan as saying.

“This is a way to deal with some of the most complex regions of the human genome and do what might appear to be a simple thing: Count whether a person has one, two, three or more copies of a gene. In fact, such counting is surprisingly difficult,” said Kidd.

The researchers say that next-generation technology for sequencing the human genome has far greater detection power, and costs substantially less than the traditional sequencing method known as Sanger sequencing.

According to them, the new technologies are beginning to distinguish subtle dissimilarities between nearly identical gene copies.

“This can provide researchers with a more accurate assessment of specific gene content and insight into functional constraints,” Alkan said.

“The newer, faster genome sequencing platforms may eventually make it feasible to detect the full-spectrum of genomic variation among many individuals, including patients suffering from diseases of genetic origin. Next-generation technology and computational methods promise low cost, rapid sequencing of different individuals and may lead to a fuller understanding of the patterns and significance of human genetic variation,” Alkan added.

The analytical method they devised is already being tapped for the 1000 Genome Project, an international effort to catalog and compare the genomes of hundreds of people from around the world.

Alkan, Kidd, and their colleagues note that the ability to accurately and systematically determine the absolute copy number for any genomic segment is a notable step toward a true and complete picture of individual genomes, and how the genome shapes a person’s characteristics.

“The next challenge will be defining variation in the sequence content and the structural organization of these dynamic and important regions of the human genome,” they wrote.

Why our red blood turns blue after entering veins

Washington, Aug 29 (ANI): Ever imagined why our blood, which is actually red in colour turns blue in veins? Well, it’s because of the oxygen.

According to experts, heart pumps blood to the lungs to pick up oxygen.

The oxygen-rich blood is then pumped out to the body through arteries, which is red in colour, reports Live Science.

Then from arteries, the blood flows through tiny blood vessels called capillaries, where it gives up its oxygen to the body’s tissues.

When the blood lacks oxygen it turns blue and returns to heart through veins. (ANI)

Mizo artist sets up first ever fine art school

Aizwal, Aug 28 (ANI): Laltanpuia, a promising painter who started the first fine arts school in Mizoram, is encouraging the youth to take to innovative ways to earn a living.

Laltanpuia, for whom painting was just a hobby, has now turned it into a mission to fight social problems like militancy, drugs and poverty in the northeast. is art not only pleases the eyes but also conveys an important message about culture, life and most of all peace.

With the objective of tapping the hidden talent among the youth, Laltanpuia started the first fine arts school in Mizoram after the completion of a Diploma in Fine Arts from Mumbai.

“As there is no art college here so I had to pursue my Diploma in Art outside of the state. After completion of my course, I returned and set up this school of fine arts so that people need not go out to learn about art. Art can attract the youth towards constructive activities. I think the educated youth can be self-employed by taking to painting and there is a good demand for paintings in metro cities and foreign markets,” said Laltanpuia.

Laltanpuia, who believes that art can play a role in developing aesthetic values among the people of Mizoram, encountered many hardships on his journey.

One of them was the absence of an art school or guidance centre in the state.

Keeping this in mind, he started the art centre, which is now molding lives of many budding artists.

“It’s a good profession. We can make good money and since it is my hobby, I can pursue my hobby as a profession,” said Lalchangchua.

Today, several educated Mizo youth have joined the centre and are learning fine art. Some even plan to further develop their skills after getting trained in painting and usage of colour.

“Art is a good scope for earning money through your works. You can also make a name for yourself through art. And government jobs are all very common here, so it’s a different way,” said Lisa Lalsanswani, a trainee.

Fashion may have emerged 80,000 years ago in form of shell beads

London, August 28 (ANI): A new study by an international team of researchers from France, South Africa, Germany, Israel and the UK has confirmed that 80,000-year-old shell beads found in caves in North Africa represent some of the earliest evidence of the use of personal ornamentation, which also points to the dawn of modern human behaviour.

According to a report carried out by the Planet Earth Online, the beads provide evidence that the people alive at the time were acting much like modern humans.

“There is a problem with linking anatomically modern humans with behaviourally modern humans,” said Professor Nick Barton of the University of Oxford UK, and one of the authors of the study. “These people may have looked like us, but were they behaving the same?” he added.

The presence of the beads suggests the people who made and wore them behaved in ways we would recognize.

Using symbolic items like shell beads to communicate ideas about the wearer requires skills found only in modern humans, including a well-developed language and the ability to use abstract concepts.

The researchers analyzed 25 beads from four sites in North Africa from the Middle Palaeolithic period.

The beads, consisting of the shells of sea snails called Nassarius, had been transported some distance from the marine environment in which they’re usually found, and showed evidence of deliberate alterations.

“We found evidence they had been strung together as in a necklace or bracelet,” said Barton.

The shells had been deliberately perforated using stone tools and the researchers found distinctive wear patterns which suggested they had been rubbing together.

Wear marks around the perforations indicated the shells had been threaded on a string.

Several had also been covered with a pigment called red ochre and one shell showed evidence of heating, possibly to alter its colour.

As to what purpose the coloured beads served, Barton said, “What they were signalling, we’re not entirely sure. Possibly, they were an insurance policy, if you had shared access to certain resources and wanted to identify yourself to members of another group.”

The beads may also have let wearers identify members of the same social group, preventing unnecessary conflicts.

Alternatively, the beads might have provided personal information about the wearer, such as the wearer’s position in the social hierarchy, or that they had passed through puberty and into adulthood.

These beads might have also represented the origins of today’s fashions. (ANI)

Magic ink to revolutionise full-colour printing

London, Aug 26 (ANI): Magic ink developed by South Korean engineers is set to revolutionise full-colour printing.

The M-Ink can be used to produce any colour in the visible spectrum and could lead to a new method of cheap and instant full-colour printing.

The research team led by Sunghoon Kwon at Seoul National University in South Korea borrowed the novel idea from nature.

Many insects and birds owe their bright colours to the interaction of light with fine-patterned surface textures.

Researchers have long experimented with replicating these so- called structural colours in synthetic materials.

According to Kwon, M-Ink contains three ingredients: magnetic nanoparticles 100 to 200 nanometres across, a solvation liquid, and a resin.

The nanoparticles disperse throughout the resin, giving the ink a brown appearance. But after applying an external magnetic field, the nanoparticles immediately snap to the magnetic field lines, forming chain-like structures.

He said regularly-spaced nanoparticle chains interfere with incoming light, so that the light reflected from the surface is of a particular colour.

“Adjusting the magnetic field strength shifts the spacing of the field lines and changes the colour,” New Scientist quoted him as saying.

After the desired colour is produced the nanoparticles can be fixed in place by exposing the ink to UV light, which cures the resin

“You can pattern A4-size [letter-size] full-colour prints within a second,” Kwon said.

“You can build papers displaying unique features on application of an external magnetic field,” he added.

Soon, soundwaves may help find early dental decay

Washington, Aug 25 (ANI): Aussie researchers are developing a tool that can use sound waves to identify early stages of tooth decay by measuring the mineral content of teeth.

Tooth decay begins by acid-forming bacteria eating away at the enamel, causing minerals to leach from it, softening, and weakening the tooth.

Sometimes dentists can identify this demineralisation by seeing a change in the colour of the tooth, or by looking at x-rays.

They also use sharp probes that test the hardness of the enamel, and find where the rot has set in, but all such probes can be painful and cause unnecessary damage to the teeth.

But PhD researcher David Hsiao-Chuan Wang, from the University of Sydney, and colleagues are now developing a less invasive new technique to measure mineral content of teeth, using sound waves generated by laser pulses.

“We want to be able to be able to quantify mineral content of the dental enamel,” ABC Online quoted Wang as saying.

He added: “We can keep the laser power below a damaging threshold.”

Laser pulses aimed at the tooth set up a series of high frequency sound waves (ultrasound) that travel through the enamel surface, penetrating it to different depths.

As a soundwave moves through a demineralised part of the tooth, it changes its speed, which can be detected.

Each soundwave penetrates to different depths of the enamel, depending on its wavelength, enabling a profile of the tooth to be built up, showing where decay has begun.

The researchers first tested the system on different known materials, before testing it on extracted human tooth.

They still have to test the system on teeth in patients, but firstly they need to develop a convenient handheld device and obtain ethics permission to trial it in humans.

Wang said that a prototype of the hand-held device could be ready in two years.

Professor Ian Meyers of the Australian Dental Association has said that testing the technique in the mouth is important, as saliva affects the property of teeth enamel.

Meyers also said that when decay was detected early, fillings could be avoided by either stopping the demineralisation through better oral care.

Otherwise, it could also be possible to re-mineralise the tooth by using products specifically designed for this purpose.

He said that the new technique could add to the range of tools available for dentists to identify early stages of decay, as long as it is affordable

Wang has estimated that the new tool would cost “below 50,000 dollars”, and complement rather than replace conventional methods.

He said that the ultrasound technique would be particularly useful in research, especially in evaluating the effectiveness of remineralisation treatments.

Artificial red blood cells a step closer

Melbourne, Aug 24 (ANI): A team of Australian scientists has genetically modified human embryonic stem cells to glow red when they develop into premature red blood cells.

The breakthrough is seen as the next step in producing artificial blood.

Dr Andrew Elefanty at Monash University in Melbourne and his colleagues inserted specific genes that code for colour, into the DNA of a manufactured stem cell line.

Stem cells are the template from which all cell types in the body form.

He says the coloured genes, known as ‘reporters’, highlight the emergence of certain cell types.

“What we’ve said to the stem cells is when you’re going to turn on the gene for globin we want you to also turn on a red light,” ABC Science quoted Elefanty as saying.

He says fluorescing cells are a useful tool to help work out the best way to engineer specific cells.

“We learn what the right growth enhancing substances are that the body normally uses and we put those into the laboratory,” he said.

Elefanty says fluorescing cells also allows scientists to monitor the cells when they’ve been injected into animals.

“Sometimes it’s not that easy to tell the difference between the ones you put in and the ones that were already there,” he said.

The researchers are hoping the development of glowing stem cell lines will help them work out how to develop mature red blood cells faster.

However, Elefanty says they are still a way off producing artificial blood that could be used in human blood transfusions.

He and his colleagues are working with Queensland researchers to develop ways to mature the cells, but there are still many issues to resolve.

“We’ve got to make sure the cells are safe, that they don’t keep growing and form tumours and that the immune system doesn’t reject them,” he said.

‘I really think Ali feared me’, says ‘Smoking’ Joe Frazier

London, Aug 23 (ANI): Former World Heavyweight Boxing Champion Joe Frazier, who is famous for his trilogy of Heavyweight Championship fights with Muhammad Ali, has said that he still retains a disdain for the treatment he received from Ali.

Frazier, who for a decade had impaired vision in his left eye, could not see after Ali punched his right eye closed.

The history between the pair, which is featured in a DVD released this week, demonstrates the depth of the feud, highlighted by Ali’s verbal assaults on race and religious grounds.

“Ali was nervous and he taunted me, saying I was ugly and all sorts of things. But, I think that was his way of building himself up, by running off at the mouth,” The Herald Sun quotes Frazier, as saying.

“He had a lot of respect for me. And, I think he feared I could beat him. So, he used his tongue before the fights to try to upset me and to get his own adrenaline going. I really think he feared me,” he added.

Despite protests, Frazier’s corner threw in the towel before the 15th round, which meant that Frazier had lost the rematch. Frazier was never again the force he used to be and accepts his place in history, aware that a few seconds between rounds 14 and 15 in Manila could have changed the world’s perception of his talents.

“You have corners and trainers and managers who care. I had impaired vision in my left eye and I was struggling to see out of the other. I didn’t hold anything against anybody for the fight being stopped,” Frazier said.

“I would have been in real trouble if both my eyes closed. But, to learn Ali was ready to quit at the same time my corner called an end to the fight was a bit disappointing. He ended up in more physical strife than me, but he got the verdict and all the accolades that go with winners,” he added.

The 65-year-old further said that all that happened in “The Thrilla in Manilla” fight is history now and everyone must move on.

“I am at peace with the world. I could never understand why he went on at the mouth about so many things. I’ve always believed it doesn’t matter what colour your skin is. I couldn’t figure out what he was on about. I can only hope he asks the Lord for forgiveness for the wrongs he did me,” Frazier said. (ANI)

Shahrukh Khan clarifies that his detention was not a drama

Mumbai, Aug 18 (ANI): Bollywood superstar Shahrukh Khan on Tuesday clarified that his detention at Newark International Airport in the US was not a drama.

Addressing mediapersons here after his return, Khan said, “I was asked bizarre questions by the airport officials. It wasn’t a drama. I don’t want publicity. But, I feel routine procedure was not followed there. We should not be treated on the basis of our colour or nationality.”

Recalling the incident, he said he was not angry over what had happened there. However, he felt that the airport officials ‘went a little overboard’ with the questioning.

Denying that he felt bad about the questioning, he said what really hurt him was the question they popped at him several times, “Your name is very common. Can anyone vouch for you to enter here?”

Rubbishing reports that he was trying to promote his upcoming movie ‘My Name is Khan’, he said, “I hate people who rake up religious issues for their personal gains. I don’t want to sound pompous here but I don’t need publicity to promote my movie. I am too big a star for that.”

The actor also said the incident would not prevent him from visiting the US again. e said that if a ‘tit for tat’ policy was to be followed, then he would love to be allowed to frisk Hollywood stars Angelina Jolie or Megan Fox.

Khan was detained for about two hours at the airport where he had arrived to attend a South Asian related event in Atlantic City.

Khan was released after Congress MP Rajiv Shukla spoke to the authorities in the US and the Indian consulate.

He was detained after his name flashed on a computer and was asked several questions about the purpose of his visit. (ANI)
