Shakira back in Colombia to help disadvantaged children get education

London, March 7 (ANI): Colombian singer-songwriter Shakira has been working hard to make the much-needed arrangement of education for disadvantaged children in her country.

Her entourage recently travelled to a school her charity Fondacion Pies Descalzos in the remote and poor north-west border province of Choco, deep in the Colombian jungle.

“One-hundred per cent of our kids that we have in our school here have been displaced or have families that have fled their home towns,” the BBC quoted one of the member of the travelling team as telling its reporter Rajesh Mirchandani.

The online report reveals that Shakira has visited the school several times, and each time she is surrounded by exuberant children as she makes her way down dirty, pot-holed streets, past wooden shacks and open sewers.

Shakira is welcomed not only because she is a famous pop star, but also because she provides a lifeline in the area of grinding poverty.

Her foundation provides uniforms, equipment and food for 750 pupils at the school.

When asked why the government did not provide such things, a teacher said: “You’ll have to ask the president that. He should pay more attention to the plight of the people of Choco. We’ve been abandoned.” (ANI)

Shakira stunned by Obama’s sharp memory

New York, Jan 21 (ANI): Pop star Shakira was left stunned when President Barack Obama remembered she’d been taking university classes in history.

The Colombian singer-songwriter Shakira quietly enrolled at Los Angeles University UCLA to study the history of western civilization.

And she was amazed to know that the new U.S. president remembered that.

“I was like, ‘I can’t believe you still have space in your hard drive to collect this information,” the New York Daily News quoted Shakira, as saying.

Shakira is the highest-selling Colombian artist of all time, having sold more than 60 million albums worldwide. (ANI)
