State boards yet to send results to DU

New Delhi, June 5 — Vijay Kandiya’s dream of studying in one of the Delhi University (DU) colleges might not materialise this year. Kandiya, a student of the Haryana board, doesn’t have his mark sheet yet despite the fact that his results are out.

Most state boards declare their results later than ICSE and CBSE. Kandiya, who wants to pursue B.Com (Honours) from a DU college, said: “I am very dejected. The mark sheets may take another 20 days to come.

What should I do?” According to DU admission guidelines, students from the Schedules Tribe and Scheduled Caste are required to bring their SC/ST certificates, along with their two self-attested photographs, school certificate and mark-sheet of senior school certificate examination. With such criteria in place, and just a week to go before the sale of forms closes, SC/ST students like Kandiya from state boards may not be able to apply for admissions to Delhi University this year.

Officials said they couldn’t do much as the boards have not sent the CDs of their results yet to the varsity.

Colleges still to fill principals’ posts

Mumbai, May 29 — As the May 31 deadline set by the Supreme Court for filling up vacancies for college principals’ posts looms ahead, college managements are still searching for full time principals. In December 2008, the Bombay High Court had ruled that no college, private, aided or unaided, could keep its principal’s post vacant. Based on the HC order, the state government had issued a circular to all colleges, asking them to fill up vacant posts of principals by May 31, 2009. The state circular had warned colleges that if they failed to meet the deadline they would be prohibited from taking in students in first year courses. But college managements moved the Supreme Court, which on May 29 last year, gave colleges an extension of one year, giving them time till May 31, 2010, to fill up the posts. Till April, about 45 to 50 per cent of principals’ posts in colleges affiliated to the Mumbai University were vacant with temporary principals handling the charge. State government sources said that little progress had been made in most institutes and there are still a large number of vacancies that need to be filled. College managements claimed that they received a nod to advertise for the principals’ post only last week, giving them little time to complete the recruitment process.

Pune University vice chancellor, R K Shevgaonkar, said that the message to fill up principals’ posts had been sent to all the affiliated colleges months ago and that all the managements had initiated the recruitment process.

Jamie Lynn Spears ‘looking at colleges’

Washington, May 15 (ANI): Pop singer Britney Spear’s kid sister Jamie Lynn is planning to join college to complete her studies, say sources.

The teen actress Lynn Spears completed her high school 2 years back through online correspondence and received her GED two years ago.

But she stayed out of the spotlight since, as she got pregnant at the age of 16 with her then boyfriend Casey Aldridge and gave birth to daughter Maddie in 2008.

“Jamie Lynn is looking at colleges,” a source told Fox411.com.

Mother Lynn Spears and Jill Zarin had dinner in New York City this week. And Fox411.com has discovered what they discussed during the rendezvous.

“Lynn and Jill have been friends for years, they have stayed in touch and they got together for a brief dinner at Kenmare [restaurant],” the source said. “There were definitely no cameras involved – you won”t see it on ”The Real Housewives of New York”.”

“Jamie Lynn wants to go to college and Lynn needed some guidance. Jill and Lynn are friends and they end up talking a lot about what their daughters are up to,” the source added.

“Jill”s daughter Ally is going away to school and Jill has been involved in the process every step of the way. Jill helped Ally write her application – she was hands on during the process,” the source further added.

Lynn, 19, will be the first one to experience college fun as neither sister Britney nor her brother Bryan has attended college. (ANI)

Outcry after college bans Muslim girl from wearing a veil in Mangalore

Mangalore, Aug 21 (ANI): College students of various colleges under the banner of the Dakhina Kannada Students Federation (DKSF) held a protest march here against a city college after it barred a Muslim girl from attending classes for wearing a burqa (veil).

Seventeen-year-old Aysha Asmin, a first year B. Com student of Sri Venkataramana Swamy College, Bantwal, was allegedly prevented by the college authorities from entering college campus wearing a burqa.

Holding placards and raising slogans, the students demanded action against the college authorities.

“We want justice. It means we don’t want to do any inequality in the campus. We want equality. But we want to follow our fundamental rights,” said Ruksana, president, Girls Islamic Organisation.

Seetharama Mayya, Principal, Sri Venkataramana Swamy College, said that Asmin can continue with her studies in the college but she has to abide by the rules of the college.

“She can remain in the college. She can continue her education, provided she abides our rules and regulations. Except classes…They can come with their dress, with their burqa in the college and they can keep it in the ladies room and while going back they can wear it again. That’s our tradition. That has been happening for several years,” said Mayya.

Meanwhile, the college is contemplating a dress code for students at the campus. (ANI)

Srinagar, Aug 18(ANI): A group of students from various colleges in Jammu and Kashmir recently had an opportunity to learn about wildlife recently, as they attended a two-day camp at the Dachigam National Park.

Organised by Youth Hostel Association of India (YHAI) in collaboration with Wildlife Department of Jammu and Kashmir, the camp was aimed at creating awareness about the importance of nature and wildlife conservation.

Bombay High Court scraps quota formula for college admissions

Mumbai, July 6 (IANS) Bombay High Court Monday struck down the Maharashtra government’s proposal to reserve 90 percent of college seats in the state for students from the state board.
The government had proposed only 10 percent of seats in junior colleges for students from Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) and the Indian School Certificate Examinations (ISCE). The rest were for students passing the Class 10 exam conducted by the Maharashtra State Board for Secondary and Higher Secondary Education.

Spelling a major setback to the state government, a division bench of the high court comprising Chief Justice Swatanter Kumar and Justice S.C. Dharmadhikari also lambasted the authorities for taking a “hasty decision” in the matter.

This is the second time in two years that the court has pulled up the government for its attempt to ensure that over 200,000 students of the state board get the measured share of seats and that the 25,000 students from other boards did not get an upper hand in admissions to prestigious colleges.

The judges’ ruling came in the final hearing of a plethora of petitions challenging the government resolution on the 90:10 seat sharing formula, which they termed as “arbitrary, un-constitutional and taken without application of mind”.

The judgement was welcomed by parents of students hailing from the CBSE/ICSE boards who were anxiously waiting for the admissions to begin for the junior colleges for the academic year 2009-2010.

The court said the decision was brought in for political ambitions and to favour the local board students. It “itself was self-contradictory, self-discriminative and conflicting with the objectives with which it was introduced”, the judges observed.

The court felt that the classification of students as coming from the state board and non state boards was “artificial and imaginary”.

Chief Minister Ashok Chavan asserted that they would not challenge the order in the Supreme Court. “We respect the court order,” he said.

Chavan said the 90:10 formula decision was taken after due consideration of the number of students from the state board and non-state boards.

UP government warns colleges against jeans ban

Lucknow, June 23(ANI): The Uttar Pradesh government on Tuesday issued a stern notice to all colleges in the state not to impose any ban on jeans for girl students or face punitive actions.

“Action will be taken against any college aided by the Government of UP if anything is done against the law of the land,” said Kamran Rizvi , Education Secretary.

He said the provisions of University Act could be raised to take steps against colleges who impose any kind of dress code on students.

Earlier, Principals of many colleges in Uttar Pradesh had agreed to a proposal to ban students from wearing jeans on campus and work out a dress code for them.

Four colleges, affiliated with Kanpur University, had prohibited their students from wearing jeans. The authorities took the step following several complaints of eve-teasing that were occurring just outside the college gate. (ANI)
