Snap Analysis: Colombia’s Santos seen strong in runoff election

(Reuters) – Former Colombian Defense Minister Juan Manuel Santos will enter a presidential runoff in a strong position after voters gave him a comfortable lead in the first-round vote on Sunday.

World

With no candidate securing more than 50 percent of the votes needed to avoid the June runoff, Santos, an ally of outgoing President Alvaro Uribe, will face off with former Bogota Mayor Antanas Mockus on June 20. He led Mockus by 47 percent to 22 percent with most polling stations counted.

Whoever takes the helm of the Andean nation will inherit a waning, cocaine-fueled insurgency, a boom in the expansion of the commodities’ sectors and increased appetite for Colombian assets.

* Santos’ commanding lead against his main rival, Mockus, defied the trend of recent opinion polls, which showed the two deadlocked in the first round and likely headed for a tie in the runoff. Santos won every state, except for one province, according to electoral results. He will also enter second-round campaigning bolstered by his U Party’s dominant role in Congress.

* Mockus, who surged in opinion polls before the vote due to his push for clean government and more jobs, will have to take a tough look at his campaign in the next round after getting only about a fifth of the national vote. His party has only a few seats in Congress and lacks the political machinery of the U Party. That may make beating Santos insurmountable in the runoff.

* Alliances in the second round will be key to winning the presidency. Santos will seek support from the Conservative and Cambio Radical parties, while Mockus will try to claim the moderate, middle ground. The leftist Democratic Pole Party will also play a role in any grouping to oppose a pro-Uribe candidate.

* Colombia’s peso currency and local TES bonds are not expected to react on Monday due to a holiday in the United States and since the June runoff was widely expected. The two candidates are seen continuing Uribe’s pro-investment policies. Market players generally see Santos as more favorable due to the expected continuity of Uribe’s policies and strong presence of his party in Congress. Mockus — whose party is weak in Congress — would have a tougher time pushing through legislation.

* Santos’ strong showing in the first round may irk neighbors Ecuador and Venezuela. They have had strained ties with Colombia, the main U.S. ally in the region, since an attack against Colombia’s FARC guerrillas on Ecuadorean soil — an operation that occurred while Santos was defense minister. Late last week, Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez said he hoped Colombia’s next leader would want dialogue.

Ex-Colombian beauty queen arrested on drug charges

A former Colombian beauty queen suspected of leading a band of young women who smuggled cocaine from Argentina to Europe was arrested on Wednesday in Argentina, a judicial source said.

Police arrested Angie Sanclemente Valencia, 31, at a youth hostel in Buenos Aires, the source told Reuters, asking not to be named because the investigation is ongoing.

The ex-model and actress won one of Colombia’s top beauty pageants in 2000 but was later dethroned after it was revealed she had lied about being single.

She vanished several months ago amid an investigation by Argentine authorities into accusations she headed up a group of women who transported cocaine on flights from Buenos Aires to Europe via Mexico.

Colombia is the world’s No. 1 cocaine producer.

Authorities say Valencia employed young, attractive women who reportedly often traveled first class to smuggle the drugs.

She has repeatedly denied the charges. Her lawyer has said Valencia refused to turn herself in out of fear she could be abused in jail.

Osama may be living comfortably in Iran

New York, May 4 (ANI): Elusive Al Qaeda chief Osama Bin Laden may be leading a comfortable existence surrounded by his wives and children and protected by the Iran Revolutionary Guards.

According to a new documentary movie made by leading falconer, Alan Parrot titled ‘Feathered Cocaine’ Osama is not living in a dank cave nor is he looking for ways to evade his potential captors.

Parrot is one of the world’s top falconers and has worked for the Shah of Iran.

Owing to his rich experience as a falconer and proximity to the royal family, Parrot has cultivated influential contacts.

One of those contacts, described as a warlord from the north of Iran and disguised in a balaclava, reveals in the film that he has met Bin Laden six times on hunting trips inside Iran since March 2003 Fox News reports.

He claims Osama is relaxed and healthy and so comfortable that “he travels with only four bodyguards.”

Their last confirmed meeting was in 2008, “There may have been more since then, but I haven’t talked to my source since we left Iran,” says Parrot.

To prove his case, Parrot said he managed to get the telemetry setting for the falcons Bin Laden was flying, and he provided them to the U.S. Government.

“They could locate him to a one-square-mile area using those unique signals”’ he said. He says the government never contacted him for a follow up.

Former CIA agent Robert Baer, an outspoken critic of U.S. policy in the Middle East, seconds Parrot’s story in the documentary. He was a onetime Middle East operative.

He reaffirmed Parrot’s theory, pointing out that falconry is extremely important is to the vastly wealthy, and how Parrot’s position gave him a unique lens on that world. He also claimed that the proceeds from the falcon sales are used in a large part to fund Al Qaeda. (ANI)

Peruvian loses appeal against drug trafficking conviction

A Peruvian man jailed in Queensland over a conspiracy to import almost 90 kilograms of high-grade cocaine has lost an appeal against his conviction and 24-year jail term.

A Supreme Court jury in Brisbane last year convicted Jorge Velarde Silva of conspiring to bring 89 kilograms of cocaine into Australia from Mexico on board the yacht Sparkles Plenty.

The conspiracy, which involved two other men, ran into trouble when the yacht almost sank in Moreton Bay.

Velarde argued his trial judge made mistakes and his sentence was manifestly excessive.

But the Court of Appeal has ruled there were no grounds to overturn the conviction and the sentence emphasised the need for deterrence.

Court allows soap star to chase American dream

A Sydney court has quashed a good behaviour bond imposed on former Home And Away star Todd Lasance who was caught with cocaine last year.

Lasance pleaded guilty to possessing 0.36 grams of cocaine at a Kings Cross nightclub and in January was placed on a 12-month good behaviour bond.

No conviction was recorded.

Lasance’s lawyer today appealed against the severity of the sentence, saying the actor could not go to the United States until his bond had expired.

The court heard Lasance has a good chance of winning roles in the US.

The magistrate agreed to let him off so he can pursue his ambitions overseas.

Earlier this week, Lasance was nominated for a Logie.

Boxer Calzaghe apologises for taking cocaine

London, Mar 29 (ANI): Boxing legend and Strictly Come Dancing star, Joe Calzaghe, has apologised for taking cocaine.

The 38-year-old former boxer admitted his “occasional use” of the drug and spoke of the long days since he quit fighting.

“Since Joe gave up boxing he”s had so much time on his hands he has been bored out of his mind. All the time he used to spend in the gym, dedicating his life to boxing, he now has free. It’s a lot of hours to fill,” The Sun quoted his friend, as saying.

“When he has been back home in South Wales he has found himself twiddling his thumbs. In the week it can feel like a prison – nothing is happening. He has been spending more and more time in London, where there”s a massive temptation to go out a lot.

“He went 15 years without really enjoying a drink so he’s been having a beer a lot more often. He’s a sociable guy and enjoys a night out. He feels he has earned it after all the years in the ring,” Calzaghe’s friend said.”

A family friend in Newbridge said: “Joe is a hero to the family and to all his friends and fans. Everyone is surprised he’s got caught up in this but it must be because of the celebrity lifestyle he is living.

“When he was fighting he was kept away from temptation – now he is mixing with people who use drugs as part of their lifestyle.”

Calzaghe, who won MBE and CBE, retired in 2008 after winning all his 46 professional fights, confessed to taking cocaine to an undercover reporter from the News of the World.

Calzaghe, who was the 2007 BBC Sports Personality of the Year, has been living a champagne lifestyle in the two years since he quit the ring. (ANI)

Joan Collins once snorted cocaine

London, March 27 (ANI): English actress Joan Collins has confessed that she once snorted cocaine but found it horrible.

The ‘Dynasty’ star, 76, insisted she is totally against the use of drugs.

She also referred to her third husband Ron Kass, the former chief of Apple records, who fought against cocaine.

“It’s extremely sad, anybody that ruins their life by drugs,” the Daily Express quoted her as telling Piers Morgan on ITV’s Life Stories.

She added: “I am so anti-drugs. I have never taken… Well, once somebody forced me to take some coke and it was just so horrible.”

The incident apparently occurred in the late 1960s at a nightclub in St Tropez.

Collins mentioned that she has always taken care of her body.

She said: “I’d rather just grow old gracefully, while fighting all the way. I have always, always, always used make-up and kept my face out of the sun since I was 20.” (ANI)

Fatal harbour crash accused affected by drugs, alcohol

One of two Sydney men accused of being in charge of a boat that collided with a trawler, killing six people, has admitted taking drugs and said he had never steered a boat before.

A court has heard that barman Percy Small was handed the wheel of the boat by skipper Matthew Reynolds before it collided with a fishing trawler on Sydney Harbour in 2008.

Six of their 14 friends on the boat were killed.

Small, 26, has told the New South Wales Supreme Court that he had been drinking and using cannabis and cocaine throughout the day and did not have a boat licence.

But he said he “felt OK” and was “having a good time.”

Small said he was affected by the drugs and alcohol but could not say to what degree.

He said he had never been behind the wheel of a boat before, but took the wheel after skipper Matthew Reynolds told him to “sit here” .

The 26-year-old said his view of the trawler was obscured by Reynolds and that he also “wasn’t looking.”

Small broke down in the witness box as he spoke of the mental anguish he has suffered.

Small and Reynolds are on trial for the crash near Bradley’s Head in Sydney Harbour in May 2008.

Matthew Reynolds, who has chosen not to give evidence, is charged with six counts of manslaughter.

Percy Small is charged with six counts of dangerous navigation occasioning death.

Both have pleaded not guilty.

The trial before Justice Michael Grove continues.

Richard Buttrose jailed for cocaine dealing

A former Sydney restaurant owner has been jailed for at least twelve and a half years for drug offences.

Richard Buttrose, 37, pleaded guilty to two counts of supplying cocaine to an undercover officer and another charge relating to six kilograms of the drug which were found in his unit.

The cocaine in his unit had a street value of around $10 million.

In sentencing Buttrose a District Court judge said cocaine is a highly dangerous drug and that the social cost of drug addiction to the community is high.

Buttrose previously told the court that he started using cocaine to cope with the pressure of running his restaurant chain.

He said when he was selling it, he liked being known as ‘The Man.’

Buttrose winked at members of his family in the court just before he was sentenced.

They included his aunty, the Sydney media identity, Ita Buttrose.

Outside the court Detective Senior Constable Craig Partridge welcomed the sentence.

“It was a large-scale retail drug operation,” he said.

“We are very happy with the outcome.”

The court heard that Buttrose is in protective custody in jail. With time already served, he will be eligible for parole in 2021.

Family members refused to comment on the sentence to media waiting outside the court.

Interpol moved for Israeli drug peddler’s girlfriend

Panaji, March 16 (IANS) The Goa Police are moving Interpol to question the Swedish girlfriend of Israeli drug peddler Atala arrested here last week.

Deputy Superintendent of Police Chandrakant Salgaonkar told IANS that the sting operation in which Atala was filmed naming police officers allegedly involved in drug trade was shot by his girlfriend.

‘We are contacting Interpol to record his girlfriend’s statement. She is presently in Sweden,’ Salgaonkar said, refusing to name the woman.

He said Atala had said that his girlfriend shot the video in 2008.

Atala was arrested for allegedly bribing anti-narcotics cell police inspector Ashish Shirodkar after his spy camera video uploaded by an anonymous user on www.youtube.com rocked the police establishment.

In the video Atala is shown travelling in a car packed with drugs like charas and cocaine and speaking to an unidentified person about his clout with the Goa Police.

Atala alleged in the video that Shirodkar stole drugs from court’s custody and sold it to him. He said he paid the officer Rs.100,000 to allow a suspect arrested in a drug raid to go scot-free.
