England win warm-up, coach blows hot and cold

England enjoyed a triumphant home send-off to the World Cup when an unfamiliar team packed with reserves outmuscled a skilful Mexico side 3-1 in their last home friendly at Wembley on Monday.

Manager Fabio Capello may have learned little that he didn’t know before a contest in which England recovered from a ragged first half showing to ensure win.

But for the Italian, it was a night to ink over a few pencilled ticks against certain names and etch a line across others as he finalises the decisions that will cut his 30-man squad to 23 for the finals in South Africa. “I wasn’t too concerned. It was very important to know where we are now – physically and mentally – and I think when we play on the counter, we look really dangerous. But we can’t just play on the counterattack.”

Goals from defender Ledley King, with a well-placed header, and striker Peter Crouch, with what appeared to be his right arm, put England 2-0 ahead before striker Guillermo Franco pulled one back from close range three minutes into first half added time. England goalkeeper Robert Green made two outstanding saves and saw another Mexican shot hit a post before the interval as England struggled to survive against spells of good possession and sharp attacks from the visitors. “The manager told us what he thought at halftime – we had to be a lot more aggressive and get in their faces,” said Steven Gerrard.

Argentina thrash Canada

In Buenos Aires, Maxi Rodriguez scored two goals and Argentina defeated Canada 5-0 on Monday in the Gauchos’ final tuneup before their World Cup opener on June 12. Argentina’s farewell match was played with FIFA player of the year Lionel Messi on the bench as coach Diego Maradona decided to rest the Barcelona playmaker.

Midfielder Javier Pastore started up front with Carlos Tevez and Gonzalo Higuain. Rodriguez scored in the 16th and 32nd minutes and Angel Di Maria added another in the 37th. Tevez scored in the 63rd and Sergio Aguero added his in 71st, seconds after coming on as a substitute.

Jong’s double secures draw for North Korea

North Korea forward Jong Tae-Se, dubbed the ‘People’s Wayne Rooney’ by Asian media, scored twice for North Korea in a 2-2 draw with fellow World Cup finalists Greece in a friendly on Tuesday.

Greece twice took the lead but were pegged back by the impressive Japan-based frontman.

Kostas Katsouranis’s second-minute strike from close range after defender Sotiris Kyrgiakos headed a Giorgos Karagounis free-kick across goal gave Greece the perfect start.

But the Koreans, with their direct running and incisive passing making the pedestrian Greeks look embarrassingly one-dimensional, dominated the remainder of the half.

North Korea skipper Hong Yong-Jo twice rattled the crossbar and on 23 minutes Jong equalised with a superb long range effort that went in off the underside of the crossbar.

Greece’s sole threat stemmed from their set pieces and after making five changes at halftime, they regained the lead through substitute Angelos Charisteas’s volley from another Karagounis free-kick.

But Jong showed his class with a clinical finish moments later, controlling a long ball, skipping past Nikos Spiropoulos and then firing powerfully past substitute goalkeeper Alexandros Tzorvas to level again.

Greece, who begin their Group B campaign against South Korea on June 12, struggled to make an impression in a disjointed display and coach Otto Rehhagel will be hoping for an improvement when they continue their preparations against Paraguay on June 2.

“I expect us to get better as things move on from here,” he told reporters.

“What I didn’t like was that we were slow with our passing.

“They (North Korea) play a fast game and I expect us to play the ball more quickly and have more fluency. Our group opponents South Korea are a very good side and we must be absolutely ready for the start of the World Cup because we will have to give our all in every game.”

North Korea are in Group G with Brazil, Ivory Coast and Portugal.

Makaay marks final league game with emotional hat-trick

Former Dutch international striker Roy Makaay marked his final league appearance before retiring with an emotional hat-trick in Feyenoord’s 6-2 rout of Heerenveen on Sunday.

The 35-year-old striker announced this week he will retire at the end of this season to take up a post at the Rotterdam club’s youth academy.

Makaay fired his third goal 15 minutes from time and was substituted minutes later, leaving the pitch in tears as he was given an ovation by the crowd.

“I didn’t feel nervous before the match, because I never have felt that through my career, but I had a special feeling for my last league match. When I was substituted I realised it ended,” Makaay told reporters.

Makaay headed home an equaliser after 13 minutes from close range and made it 4-2 after 58 minutes.

Two minutes before he was replaced by 17-year-old youth international Luc Castaignos, Makaay added his third with a 20-metre lob over goalkeeper Henk Timmer.

Makaay started his professional career in 1993 at Vitesse Arnhem but had his biggest successes later on with Deportivo Coruna, where he won the Primera Division and became European top scorer, and Bayern Munich where he won the double in 2005 and 2006.

Makaay won 43 caps in which he scored six goals and will play in the second leg in the Dutch Cup final against Ajax Amsterdam, who won the first leg 2-0, on Thursday.

Navy ship sinking might affect six-party talks: South Korea

Seoul, Apr. 30 (ANI): The South Korean Government said that a mysterious sinking of its naval warship last month might affect chances of reopening the stalled six-party talks.

“I can”t say the incident is directly related to the future of the six-party talks. But now that the state of affairs surrounding the Korean peninsula is affected by the incident, (the government) might need to review future process of the six-party talks in relation to the current situations,” Xinhua quoted Kim Young-sun, Seoul”s foreign ministry spokesman, as saying at a news briefing on Thursday.

Speculation is running high that North Korea had a hand in the recent sinking of a 1,200-ton corvette, especially after investigators looking into the incident concluded that a powerful external explosion at a close range, possibly caused by a torpedo or sea mine detonation, was the most likely cause of the incident.

The country”s defense chief Kim Tae-young also publicly pointed a finger at possible torpedo attacks as a likely culprit. (ANI)

Pompey turn despair into FA Cup joy

Crisis club Portsmouth stunned Tottenham Hotspur with a 2-0 extra-time win as it reached its second FA Cup final in three years at Wembley, just a day after being relegated from the Premier League.

Portsmouth, the 2008 FA Cup winners when now Tottenham boss Harry Redknapp was its manager, will face double chasers Chelsea – the team Pompey boss Avram Grant managed when they lost the 2008 Champions League final to Manchester United – in the May 15 final at Wembley.

Frederic Piquionne, on-loan from French club Lyon, scored from close range in the ninth minute of extra-time following former Spurs player Kevin-Prince Boateng’s header on from a Mark Wilson free-kick as Tottenham defender Michael Dawson slipped on the much criticised Wembley pitch.

Spurs thought they had equalised two minutes later but former Pompey striker Peter Crouch’s effort was ruled out by referee Alan Wiley for a foul by Niko Kranjcar, another ex-Portsmouth player, on England goalkeeper David James.

Pompey’s win was sealed when Boateng scored from the penalty spot with four minutes of extra-time left after striker Aruna Dindane was brought down by Wilson Palacios.

“It’s superb, we deserved the win,” Porstmouth keeper James told ITV.

“We played very well throughout the team.

“Look what it means to Pompey, it’s fantastic.

“We were eight- or nine-to-one (against) to win beforehand but we have proved people wrong.”

Redknapp could not understand why Crouch’s ‘goal’ was chalked off but praised his former club.

“It wasn’t our day,” he told reporters. “That’s how it goes.

“We had a good goal disallowed but full credit to Portsmouth. They always looked dangerous on the counter-attack and it was always going to be hard when they’ve got their full side out.

“We had good chances, a lot of possession and good opportunities.”

Redknapp though slammed the state of the Wembley playing surface.

“The pitch is a disgrace. I’m not using it as an excuse, it’s the same for both sides. But how can you play on a pitch you can’t stand up on? It’s farcical, unreal.”

Tottenham may be fifth in the table and chasing Champions League football but there was little evidence of a gap in class between the Londoners and their south coast opponents.

Portsmouth, bottom of the Premier League and with acknowledged debts of more than 76 million pounds, kicked-off knowing West Ham’s win over Sunderland on Saturday meant it had been relegated.

Portsmouth looked a threat on the counter-attack and had an excellent chance in the 37th minute only for Piquionne, one-on-one with Heurelho Gomes, to see his shot saved by the Brazilian’s left leg.

James though had to be at full stretch to palm away one-handed a shot from Tom Huddlestone.

Pompey continued to threaten on the break and when the quick Aruna Dindane crossed accurately to the equally speedy Piquionne, his fellow striker should have done better than head straight at Gomes.

Soon afterwards Spurs claimed a penalty after Pompey’s Steve Finnan appeared to handle in the area but Wiley dismissed the appeals.

And with 20 minutes of the second half left, Mokoena cleared off the line from Crouch, who later grazed the far post with a header.

Crouch could have won the match in stoppage time as he tried to turn in Gareth Bale’s shot but James made an excellent block from point-blank range.

Action on crossbows expected

The Premier Colin Barnett says crossbows are a danger and should be treated the same as serious weapons such as guns.

Mr Barnett made the comments after the family of a 26 year old man killed with a crossbow claimed the state government was ignoring its calls to have the weapons banned.

Yesterday, the Acting Police Minister John Day said he expects crossbows will be prohibited within months.

This morning Mr Barnett would not commit to a deadline.

“It may well be able to be done by regulation or it might require a minor amendment to the act.

“The matter will come to cabinet and we’ll that decision on advice.”

Fatal shot

Christopher Halstead died after being shot in the chest at close range with a crossbow outside a Karratha house in February last year.

28 year old Fraser Macaree stood trial accused of his murder but a Supreme Court jury instead found him guilty of the lesser charge of manslaughter.

After the verdict Mr Halstead’s mother, Yvonne, said her family was pushing for the state government to ban crossbows.

Mrs Halstead said her son’s family and friends were unlikely to ever fully recover from the ordeal.

“Chris had a zest for life, he had a sparkle about him, he was cheeky, he was funny and forever smiling. He was easy going and very caring and loving.

“He made friends easily and they stayed friends because he was such a sharing person.”

Macaree was remanded in custody and will be sentenced next month.

Grieving family calls for crossbow ban

The family of a 26 year old man killed with a crossbow has called on the WA Government to ban the weapons.

Christopher Halstead died after being shot in the chest at close range with a crossbow outside a Karratha house in February last year.

28 year old Fraser Macaree stood trial accused of his murder but after four hours of deliberations a Supreme Court jury instead found him guilty of the lesser charge of manslaughter.

After the verdict Mr Halstead’s mother, Yvonne, said her family had written to the Police Minister in February calling on the Government to ban crossbows but there had been no response.

“The Minister has ignored our correspondence and not even acknowledged receipt.

“We again call on this government to take some action.”

The Police Minister Rob Johnson is on leave but a spokeswoman says he is working with police on what to do about crossbows.

New legislation announced last year places strict conditions on the possession and use of crossbows which are classified as a controlled weapon.

ABC News contacted a number of archery, crossbow and hunting organisations this morning.

All declined to comment.

Devastated

Yvonne Halstead said her son’s family and friends were unlikely to ever fully recover from the ordeal.

“Chris had a zest for life, he had a sparkle about him, he was cheeky, he was funny and forever smiling. He was easy going and very caring and loving.

“He made friends easily and they stayed friends because he was such a sharing person.”

Civilian killed in Srinagar’s Lal Chowk firing

Srinagar, March 16 (IANS) A shop worker was killed and four people, including two troopers, were injured Tuesday in a militant attack in the capital’s crowded business centre of Lal Chowk – the second in the city in three days, police said.

Three militants opened fire with automatic weapons from a close range at a Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) posse in the main business hub of the city when the area was bustling with shoppers in the morning, city police chief Javaid Riyaz told IANS.

He said five people — three civilians and two CRPF troopers — were injured in the firing before the guerrillas escaped in the labyrinthine lanes of Lal Chowk, the heart of Srinagar.

‘One injured civilian identified as Khurshid Ahmad Parray, a salesman in a local shop, succumbed to injuries in a hospital,’ Riyaz said.

Panic gripped the area and people, mostly shoppers, were seen running for the cover when they heard gunshots. Shopkeepers downed their shutters and unattended vehicles remained parked on the deserted roads for hours.

The area was cordoned off for searches but the militants had already fled in the high tension and confusion that gripped the busy business centre in the wake of the firing.

No militant group has owned up the responsibility of the attack, which comes after a grenade explosion Sunday killed a paramilitary trooper and left five injured. The grenade attack was claimed by Save Kashmir Movement militant outfit.

Save Kashmir Movement, which has claimed responsibility for similar attacks earlier and many political killings in the Kashmir Valley, is believed to be a joint brigade of militant outfits like the Lashkar-e-Taiba, Jaish-e-Mohammed and Hizbul Mujahideen.

Police said the condition of the troopers and two civilians injured in the Lal Chowk firing was critical. They have been shifted to a sophisticated hospital because of ‘critical injuries’, the police officer said.

The two CRPF troopers are constable Basant Kumar and head constable Omkar Ram of 132 Battalion.

Lal Chowk, which lies in the heart of the city, has been at the centre of 20-year-old armed separatist insurgency in the Kashmir Valley. The attack is the latest in the surge of violence in Jammu and Kashmir where officials had been claiming decline in militancy. Security agencies, however, fear that militants might have used the lull in the past year to re-group.

Security forces have been put on red alert in the city as authorities feared more violence in the city.

Alexander brace helps Brumbies home

Loosehead prop Ben Alexander scored two close-range tries to help the Brumbies secure a 24-22 victory over the Sharks in a tense Super 14 match at Canberra Stadium.

The Sharks, one of the teams expected to make the semi-finals before the competition began, have now lost all five of their matches this season.

“That’s hard to lose like this. We’ve had five games now and lost four like this,” Sharks captain John Smit said.

“We did enough to win the game but gave away too many easy penalties in their 22 when we had them on the rack and let them get out of the danger zone.”

Brumbies captain Stephen Hoiles said: “I don’t think it was a very good game, we will take the win but we need to start improving and playing some good footy.

“We have got a fair bit of improvement in us.”

Neither side was able to stamp any authority on the first half with England international Andy Goode’s 40th-minute penalty giving the visitors a 16-13 lead at the break.

Goode had given the Sharks a 6-0 lead with two penalties before Matt Giteau drew the Brumbies level with two of his own.

Alexander then scored a 32nd-minute try, which Giteau converted, after a sustained build-up.

Ruan Pienaar struck back immediately when the Sharks had a series of drives through the forwards, the half-back exploiting the Brumbies defence fanning away from the ruck to run 25 metres untouched.

Goode converted to tie the score then slotted a penalty to give the South African side a slim lead at the half.

After the break, Alexander repeated his try-scoring effort of the first half by driving over from close to the line following sustained Brumbies pressure to give his side the lead, though Giteau missed the conversion.

Goode and Giteau then traded two penalties each to set up a tense final 10 minutes with the Brumbies leading 24-22 and the Sharks dominating possession and territory but unable to snatch a late victory.

Brumbies: 24 (B Alexander 2 tries; M Giteau conversion, 4 penalties)

Sharks: 22 (R Pienaar try; A Goode conversion, 5 penalties)

Navy inducts stealth destroyer INS Kochi

Kochi, Sep 18 (ANI): The Indian Navy today inducted a stealth destroyer of Kolkata class, INS Kochi, to boost its maritime capabilities and safeguard India’s interests.

Madhulika Verma wife of Chief of the Naval Staff, Admiral Nirmal Verma, named the second of the three Project 15-A stealth destroyers on September 18.

Mazagon Docks Ltd in Mumbai built the 6500-ton ship, named INS Kochi.

The ship has advanced stealth features, which make it less vulnerable to detection by enemy radar and will be fitted with state-of-the-art weapon systems which include the supersonic BrahMos surface-to-surface missile, the LRSAM Long Range Surface-to-Air Missiles and the MFStar multi-function radar system providing accurate data on surface and air targets.

In addition, four AK-630 rapid-fire guns and a medium range gun will boost the ship’s close-range defence capability.

The ships will also be fitted with indigenously developed twin-tube torpedo launchers and anti-submarine rocket launchers.

The NPOL developed Humsa-NG hull-mounted sonar, and two multi-role helicopters adding punch to the ship’s anti-submarine capability. The maximum speed of the ship is above 30 Knots.

The destroyer will be launched using the pontoon-assisted launch technique, to be employed for the first time in the history of indigenous warship building.

This technique helps in overcoming slipway/ draft constraints and permits launching of heavier vessels. (ANI)

Islamabad, June 23 (ANI): The Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) chief Baitullah Mehsud’s former close aide, Qari Zainuddin, has been shot dead in the North West Frontier Province (NWFP) headquarters, Dera Ismail Khan.

According to sources, Zainuddin, who had recently criticized Mehsud terming his activities as ‘unIslamic’, was killed by a gunman on Tuesday morning.

Zainuddin said that he and many other insurgents had sided with the TTP chief against non-Muslims, and not for carrying out attacks inside the country. (ANI)

Bordeaux edge closer to French title

Paris, May 24 (Xinhua) Girondins Bordeaux moved closer to the Ligue 1 title after securing a 1-0 win at home to Monaco Saturday with three points clear of Olympique Marseille and just one game left to play.

Bordeaux, who were last crowned champions 10 years ago, are on 77 points after extending their winning streak to 10 league games.

They will visit strugglers Caen next Saturday.

Marseille, second on 74 points, secured automatic entry to the Champions League with a 2-1 win at Nancy before they host Stade Rennes for their last game.

Olympique Lyon are now certain to end the season in third, and will go through to Champions League qualifying, after a 3-1 home victory against Caen took them to 70 points, seven clear of fourth-placed Toulouse, who won 2-0 at Nice.

Bordeaux struggled throughout the game but prevailed thanks to a first-half header from Morocco striker Marouane Chamakh from a Yoann Gourcuff free kick.

Marseille also feared a Nancy comeback when they conceded a goal from Landry N’Guemo two minutes from time.

Laurent Bonnart had put Marseille in front before the interval through a deflected shot, with Brandao getting the second from close range after Nancy goalkeeper Damien Gregorini had saved a Renato Civelli header from a corner.

Juninho scored his 100th goal for Lyon when he converted from the spot after being brought down in the area.

The Brazilian midfielder was then given a standing ovation from Lyon’s fans when he was substituted after the interval.

Ligue 1 top scorer Andre-Pierre Gignac scored two to take his tally to 24 goals as he helped Toulouse move up to fourth with a 2-0 win over Nice.

Second-bottom Nantes lost 2-1 to strugglers Sochaux and are on the brink of relegation to Ligue 2.

Congress protests MP lawmaker’s murder, blames opposition

Gwalior, Apr 14 (ANI): The Congress party on Tuesday called for a shutdown in Bhind and Datia districts of Madhya Pradesh to protest the murder of lawmaker Makhan Singh Jatav the previous night.

Congress leaders are blaming the opposition for the murder and have demanded a Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) inquiry in the matter.

Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chauhan, however, has urged the party not to politicise the killing.

Jatav, who represented the Gohad Assembly, was shot in the head by an unidentified assailant while returning from Cheheta village in Bhind District. He had gone there to address an election rally.

He was declared brought dead at the hospital.

Arvind Kumar, Inspector General of Police, Chambal, said: “He was sitting in the rear when some people came to talk to him. One of them shot the MLA from close range. By the time the police arrived, they fled.”

Meanwhile, Congress leader Jyotiraditya Scindia expressed grief over the Jatav’s death.

Scindia, who is contesting from the Shivpuri constituency in the state, said that all efforts would be taken to nab the assailants.

“My heart goes out to the family of the deceased. For the first time, such a sad incident has occurred in the area and we must condemn the act. I have talked to the DGP (Director General of Police) and have asked him to investigate the matter and to bring the perpetrators of this crime to book. Justice must be served to the family of the deceased,” said Scindia. (ANI)

Liverpool hammer Blackburn to go top of the table

London – Liverpool cruised to a 4-0 victory over a hapless Blackburn Rovers side on Saturday to move two points clear of Manchester United at the top of the English Premier League. Fernando Torres scored two first-half goals, Daniel Agger banged in a third and David Ngog scored the fourth as Liverpool piled the pressure on United.

Champions United have two games in hand, though, and can return to the top if they win at Sunderland later on Saturday.

Having lost 3-1 at home to Chelsea in the Champions League on Wednesday, Liverpool needed to bounce back and they did just that with a commanding win that could easily have resulted in a bigger margin of victory.

Steven Gerrard was left on the bench as he nurses an adductor injury, but Liverpool were ahead within four minutes through a stunning goal from Torres.

Feeding onto a chipped pass by Jamie Carragher and turned and fired an unstoppable volley over Paul Robinson.

Torres missed a couple of gilt-edged chances to add to the lead before he headed home from a pinpoint Xabi Alonso free-kick.

Liverpool eased off after half-time and Christopher Samba almost pulled one back with 15 minutes to go, but he slipped when shooting and his effort was easily saved by Reina.

Agger made them pay with a superb long-range strike on 83 minutes and substitute Ngog headed in from close range just before the end of the 90 minutes. (dpa)

Manchester United struggle at home, Arsenal draw away

Hamburg – Defending Champions League title holders Manchester United on Tuesday disappointed as they were held to a 2-2 draw by Porto in a first leg quarter-final match played in Manchester.

The other quarter-final played on the night saw Arsenal draw 1-1 at Villarreal.

In Manchester Porto had the ideal start when Cristian Rodriguez made the most of poor defending just four minutes into the game and beat Edwin Van der Sar with a well taken shot from 13 metres.

England striker Wayne Rooney equalized for the home side on 15 minutes after intercepting a disastrous backpass from Bruno Alves, who tried to play the ball to his goalkeeper without looking.

United substitute Carlos Tevez thought he had given United the win five minutes from the end after Rooney flicked on a throw-in with his heel and the Argentine shot past goalkeeper Helton from close range.

A minute from time Mariano Gonzalez scored a deserved equalizer for Porto though when he pushed the ball past the onrushing Van der Sar.

In Spain Arsenal spent most of the first half defending against a fast and impressive Villarreal side and went behind in the 10th minute when Marcos Senna scored from well outside the area.

The Premier League side’s coach Arsene Wenger then had to substitute goalkeeper Manuel Almunia (27th minute) and William Gallas (43rd minute), after both picked up injuries.

In the second half Arsenal managed to get into the game much better and they were rewarded for their efforts in the 66th minute when Emmanuel Adebayor found the net with a spectacular bicycle kick after chesting the ball down.

On Wednesday Liverpool are at home to Chelsea, while Bayern Munich take on Barcelona in Spain in the remaining quarter-final matches.

The return legs are to be played next week. (dpa)

Holders Zenit and ex-champs CSKA crash in UEFA Cup

Holders Zenit and ex-champs CSKA crash in UEFA Cup Hamburg – Title holders Zenit St Petersburg were dumped by Udinese and the 2005 winners CSKA Moscow crashed against Skakhtar Donetsk on a bad Thursday for Russia in the UEFA Cup round of 16.

Zenit won 1-0 on the night but that was not good enough to reverse last week’s 2-0 defeat in Italy as Udinese made a European quarter-final for the first time.

That also applied to Donetsk, who rebounded from a 1-0 first-leg loss in the Russian capital with a 2-0 home win over CSKA.

Donetsk are not the only Ukrainian club left in the competition as Dynamo Kiev won a Ukrainian duel with Metalist Kharkiv on away goals, fighting back from two goals down twice in a 3-2 defeat in Kharkiv after a 1-0 home win last week.

Werder Bremen and Olympique Marseille won their round of 16 ties on Wednesday. The other three games were scheduled for later Thursday: Galatasaray Istanbul vs SV Hamburg, Aalborg BK vs Manchester City and Braga vs Paris St Germain.

The quarter- and semi-final draw is on Friday en route to the May 20 final in Istanbul.

Zenit lacked the flair and attacking power of the last season as they were unable to rebound from the two-goal defeat in Udine.

Captain Anatoliy Tymoshckuk broke the deadlock in the 29th minute with a header off Viktor Fayzulin’s corner but Zenit then tried in vain to get the vital second goal which would have at least forced extra time.

At the same time CSKA had to bow to Donetsk and its Brazilians. Fernandinho put the hosts ahead with a 54th-minute penalty after being fouled by Pavel Mameev and Luiz Adriano’s close range effort 16 minutes later saw Shakhtar through.

In Kharkiv, Valentyn Sliusar opened the scoring in the 29th minute, with Brazilian striker Jaja on a 56th-minute freekick and Argentina’s Walter Anibal Acevedo in the 70th getting the others.

But Croatian Goran Sabljic in 68th and Serbian substitute Milos Ninkovic with a low shot in the 79th minute made sure that the former Cup Winners’ Cup champions Kiev had the last laugh.

Kiev advanced on away goals the second straight time after eliminating Spain’s Valencia in the same way in the previous round. (dpa)
