‘Special to take final Australian wicket to clinch Ashes’ says Swann

London, Aug 25(ANI): England cricketer Graeme Swann, who took the last Australian wicket to clinch the Ashes, has said that he has never experienced anything like the surge of emotion and happiness he felt after winning the Ashes.

Swann said that he would cherish the day and the experience for rest of his life, as he has seen all the phases in his career and the experience on the final day at The Oval beats it all.

“I’ve experienced some dark days in my career when I didn’t think I’d get into my county team, let alone play for England. But, however low I felt then is not comparable to how high I have felt since we won at The Oval. I would take 364 rubbish days a year just to have one like that,” Swann wrote in The Sun.

He highlighted that it was special to take the wicket, and said that he was praying for fellow bowler Steve Harmison to miss it.

“Harmison was bowling and the crowd was going mad but deep down I was thinking, ‘Don’t get him out, I want to finish this off!’ Honestly, I wouldn’t have minded if Harmy had got it,” he added.

Swann further said that the incident was so phenomenal, that he was confusion made it hard for him to decide whether to laugh, cry or dance around.

“Paul Collingwood said to me after the game that I should cherish the moment because it might not happen again. He was right. It was the best feeling I’ve ever had playing cricket. I doubt if I’ll ever feel that good again,” he added. (ANI)

Pak’s Twenty20 World Cup triumph victory a deja vu

London, June 22 (ANI): Pakistan captain Younis Khan drew a parallel between his team’s Twenty20 World Cup triumph at Lords’ with Imran Khan’s 1992 World Cup victory.

“I’m the second Khan,” Younus said, addressing a post victory press conference.

Pakistan team’s fight back story in the 16-day Twenty20 championship mirrors that of 1992 team led by Imran Khan, who famously urged his players to fight “as if you were a cornered tiger.”

On Sunday, a delighted Imran Khan warmly congratulated Pakistan cricket team over their “tremendous performance” against Sri Lanka.

“Our cricketers did us proud,” The Nation quoted Khan, as saying.

Imran Khan, who had just landed in Houston, Texas, from Dallas said the Pakistani cricketers, despite their isolation from international cricket, fought courageously and came from behind to clinch the World Cup.

He said the morale-boosting news came in the wake of the Swat tragedy and several other setbacks. “This victory is so uplifting,” he remarked. (ANI)

Jordan to host own polo event after last year’s ‘too chavvy’ snub

London, June 21 (ANI): Jordan is drawing plans to host her own polo tournament after she was reportedly banned from attending the highlight of the polo season last year for being “too chavvy”.

The glamour model spit fire over the “pure snobbery” of the organisers of the Cartier International last year after they reportedly told her manager that she was “not the sort of person they wanted” at the Guards Polo Club.

The keen horsewoman, who hopes to clinch Olympic gold by competing for in both the dressage and show jumping, said she was looking to break the fixed “elite” image of the sport.

“I would really like to shatter the image of polo as an elitist sport,” The Telegraph quoted her as saying.

“It does take an enormous amount of skill and courage to ride a polo pony in a competitive match, but it should be open to everyone to enjoy a great day like this, as well as raise a lot of money for charity,” she added.

The 31-year-old, who is presently locked in a bitter divorce battle with estranged hubby Peter Andre, will be the patron of the Duke of Essex Polo Trophy. (ANI)

London, May 28 (ANI): Barcelona’s forward Thierry Henry was doubly happy, as he clinched a Champions League winners’ medal on his daughter’s birthday.

The Barcelona ace’s little daughter Tea turned four on Wednesday. And Henry, who lost in the 2006 final with Arsenal against Barca, said: “It is doubly special for me to win because it is my daughter’s birthday.”

“The disappointment of losing with Arsenal will always be there for me because the club are in my blood but I am very happy tonight. It’s an unbelievable feeling to win the Treble,’ The Sun quoted him, as saying.

Zuma wins election but ANC misses two-thirds majority

Johannesburg – South Africa’s ruling African National Congress (ANC) won the country’s election with a decisive majority according to results Saturday – but fell short of the two-thirds majority it had been batting for. Jacob Zuma’s ANC took 65.9 per of votes to the 400-seat National Assembly, against 16.6 per cent for the Democratic Alliance (DA) of Cape Town mayor Helen Zille and a little over 7 per cent for the fledgling Congress of the People, preliminary final results showed.

The Independent Electoral Commission was due to confirm the results later Saturday and officially declare the ANC the winner.

Britain’s Prime Minister Gordon Brown had already become one of the first world leaders to congratulate Zuma, who is set to become president within days, Downing Street said, in a short telephone call late Friday night.

Whilst the ANC has been celebrating the result as a resounding mandate for Zuma, who had faced a trial for corruption until a few weeks before the election, the ANC in fact dropped support in percentage terms for the first time since it came to power under Nelson Mandela in 1994.

Mandela’s successor Thabo Mbeki, whom Zuma ousted as ANC leader in 2007, had increased the party’s vote in two successive elections to 70 per cent in 2004.

The ANC points to the fact that it won more votes than ever before because around 2 million more people voted in these elections than the last one.

South Africa has a proportional representation system, which means that seats in parliament are allocated according to each party’s share of the vote.

In failing to clinch two-thirds of the vote, the ANC loses its power to to push through constitutional amendments on its own through parliament.

The DA had warned voters against giving the populist Zuma that power, saying it feared he might use it to muzzle his critics.

The ANC had retorted that it had had a two-thirds majority for the past five years and never abused it.

Voters in the election were also asked to chose parties to nine provincial parliaments. The ANC maintained control of all but one province. The Western Cape, where Cape Town is located, went to the DA, which hopes to use the province to showcase its ability to govern and increase its majority in future elections.(dpa)

Trulli leads Toyota double to clinch Bahrain GP pole

Sakhir, Bahrain – Jarno Trulli clinched pole position ahead of team-mate Timo Glock in a first Toyota one-two in qualifying Saturday for Sunday’s Formula One Bahrain Grand Prix. Red Bull’s Sebastian Vettel, the winner in Shanghai last week, was third, ahead of Brawn GP’s Jenson Button, the overall leader.

World champion Lewis Hamilton provided a boost for McLaren-Mercedes with fifth place to start in the third row alongside Brawn GP’s Rubens Barrichello.

There was also improvement for Ferrari, still without a point this season, who had Felipe Massa and Kimi Raikkonen eighth and 10th respectively.

Renault’s Fernando Alonso was seventh ahead of Massa, with Nico Rosberg in a Williams ninth, ahead of Raikkonen.

With the temperature at 38 degrees Celsius at the Bahrain International Circuit, Trulli clocked 1 minute 33.431 seconds to edge Germany’s Glock by 0.281 seconds for his fourth pole position and his first since the US Grand Prix in 2005.

“This is a great result for the team,” said the 34-year-old Italian, whose only Grand Prix victory came for Renault at Monaco in 2004.

“We have worked very hard for this, and I’m very happy. I feel very comfortable ahead of tomorrow’s race.”

Toyota, who have never won a Grand Prix, filled the first row in qualifying for the first time and earned their first pole since Ralf Schumacher was qualifying fastest at Suzuka, Japan in October 2005.

Glock said he was satisfied despite just being edged to what would have been a first pole.

“I was quite happy during qualifying. But then I made one mistake, although I don’t think it would have been good enough for pole. Jarno was just too good today,” he said.

BMW Sauber’s Robert Kubica and Nick Heidfeld meanwhile both failed to make the third and final qualifying stage as the team’s disappointing season continued, while Red Bull’s Mark Webber was a casualty in the first qualifying round.

The Australian – second in Shanghai last week – was held up by Germany’s Adrian Sutil in a Force India, and will start 19th in the 20-car field.

Button leads overall going into the fourth race of the season. The Briton, who won the opening two races in Australia and Malaysia and finished third in China, has 21 points, six ahead of team-mate Barrichello of Brazil.

Vettel and Glock both have 10 points, Webber is on 9.5 and Trulli on 8.5.

Brawn GP lead the constructors’ championship on 36 points, with Red Bull on 19.5 and Toyota on 18.5.(dpa)

Zuma wins election but ANC set to miss two-thirds majority

Johannesburg – South Africa’s ruling African National Congress (ANC) won the country’s election with a decisive majority according to results Saturday – but appeared to have fallen just short of the two-thirds majority it wanted to enable it to change the constitution. With around 99 per cent of votes counted, Jacob Zuma’s ANC had 66.2 per cent of votes to the 400-seat National Assembly, against 16 per cent for the Democratic Alliance of Cape Town mayor Helen Zille and 7 per cent for the the fledgling Congress of the People.

The Independent Electoral Commission was due to announce the final results later Saturday and officially declare the ANC the winner.

Britain’s Prime Minister Gordon Brown had already become one of the first world leaders to congratulate Zuma on his win, Downing Street said, in a short telephone call late Friday night.

Whilst the ANC has been celebrating the result as a resounding mandate for controversial leader Jacob Zuma, who had faced a trial for corruption until a few weeks before the election, the ANC in fact dropped support in percentage terms for the first time since it came to power under Nelson Mandela in 1994.

Mandela’s successor Thabo Mbeki, whom Zuma ousted as ANC leader in 2007, had increased the party’s vote to 70 per cent in 2004.

The ANC pointed to the fact that it had won more votes than ever before because around 2 million more people voted in these elections than the previously.

South Africa has a proportional representation system, which means that seats in parliament are allocated according to each party’s share of the vote.

While apparently falling below two-thirds of the popular vote, the ANC might have polled enough to give it a critical two-thirds of seats in parliament. A two-thirds majority, or
267 seats, is needed for a party to push through constitutional amendments on its own.

Based on around 17 million votes cast, around 40,000 seats was necessary to clinch one seat.

The IEC was due to confirm the allocation of seats over the weekend.

The opposition Democratic Alliance has used the election to campaign hard to change its image of being the party of the white minority.(dpa)

Big Brother bosses to dedicate show to Jade Goody

London, May 1 (ANI): After their initial decision to not do a memorial show on late Brit celebrity Jade Goody, Big Brother bosses have now decided to hold an emotional tribute to her this summer.

Goody had passed away in March following a battle with cervical cancer, and after the amazing public outpouring of emotion over her death, bosses at Channel 4 have decided to make a one-off show focusing on her.

A senior source has leaked details of the show, which will be a “celebration of her life rather than a sad look backwards”.

“We weren’t going to do a dedicated show on Jade because she had only just died and everyone was a little overwhelmed by it all,” the Daily Star quoted the source as saying.

“It took a few weeks for her death to truly sink in. But it was clear from the support Jade and her family got from the public that there is great affection for her.

“We are planning a series of shows to mark our 10th anniversary and it would be a real shame not to give Jade her own show – separate from the others,” the source added.

The documentary, which will be screened on C4′s sister channel E4, will chart her rise to fame from the moment she stepped inside the BB house in 2002.

Producers will use an array of clips showing her funniest moments, including her stripping during a drinking game and her undercover clinch with PJ Ellis, 28.

They will also document her shock return to the house in 2007 when she famously clashed with Bollywood beauty Shilpa Shetty, 32, sparking a huge race row.

Max Clifford, Jade’s publicist and close friend, said on April 30 that he was thrilled about the change of heart.

“There is certainly a lot to celebrate,” he added. (ANI

‘We’d love to beat Arsenal to clinch Premier League title,’ says Carrick

London, Apr.24 (ANI): Manchester United’s Michael Carrick wants the Premier League title in the bag at the earliest opportunity as they chase the Quadruple, and believes this can be sealed by defeating old rivals Arsenal on May 16.

That could be the scenario if the champions and nearest challengers Liverpool win all their league fixtures between now and then.

It would be a sweet moment for United fans, who still remember the day the Gunners won the title in front of the Stretford End back in 2002.

Should Rafa Benitez’s men falter, then the title could even be clinched six days earlier in the home fixture against Manchester City, reports The Sun.

United’s England midfielder said: “We just want to carry on winning in the league and the target for us is to get the title in the bag at the earliest moment we possibly can. That way we can start to focus on trying to retain the Champions League.

“We haven’t thought that far ahead yet about when we can win it but I can understand why some people do. I know it would be perfect for the fans if we could do it against our big rivals, it would be a great way to round it off for them. But really as a squad we can’t afford to let ourselves get carried away. You can’t take your eye off the ball,” he added.

Carrick, 27, was speaking after meeting young footballers at the NSPCC’s Young People’s Centre in Warrington. (ANI)

Vettel in command as Red Bull clinch one-two in China

Shanghai – Germany’s Sebastian Vettel clinched a rain-soaked Chinese Formula One Grand Prix in commanding fashion ahead of team-mate Mark Webber in a Red Bull one-two in Shanghai on Sunday.

Overall leader Jenson Button, who had won the first two races of the season, had to make do with third place, with Brawn GP team-mate Rubens Barrichello fourth.

It was the second Grand Prix victory for 21-year-old Vettel who last season became the youngest race winner in F1 history when he won the Italian GP in Monza in a Toro Rosso. (dpa)

Tymoshenko, Putin to meet end-April: Ukraine government

KIEV (Reuters) – Ukrainian Prime Minister Yulia Tymoshenko is to meet her Russian opposite number, Vladimir Putin, later this month, the Ukrainian government said in a statement on Friday.

But Russia said the date of any meeting had yet to be decided. “The final date is yet to be agreed,” government spokesman Dmitry Peskov said.

Relations between the two countries have been dogged by a series of disputes, especially over Russian gas supplies. A row over pricing and payment arrears in January cut off Russian gas to Europe via Ukraine for more than two weeks. It ended when Tymoshenko led negotiations to clinch a long-term supply deal.

Both sides said the two prime ministers had spoken on Thursday. The Ukrainian statement said an intergovernmental committee on economic cooperation would meet after April 20.

Tymoshenko, quoted by news agencies on a visit to central Ukraine, said differences between the two neighbors over how to modernize Ukraine’s gas transport system had been resolved.

Tymoshenko and Putin had been due to meet in Moscow at the beginning of April but Russia put off the talks after Moscow strongly objected to a Ukrainian plan to modernize its gas transport system together with the European Union.

Tymoshenko, speaking in the central city of Dnipropetrovsk, was quoted as saying: “We have made it clear that we are partners in modernizing the gas transport system. We believe the issue has been solved and we can carry on working.”

Russia angrily denounced a conference in Brussels last month devoted to modernizing the Ukrainian system which sends Europe about 20 percent of its gas needs. Tymoshenko urged the EU to allocate $5.5 billion to improve the system rather than embark on expensive alternative routes bypassing Ukraine.

Moscow said it had not been consulted on the plan, though Tymoshenko said Russia was welcome to take part in any program of modernization.

Fielding Muslim candidate, BSP hopes to clinch N-E Delhi seat

In the narrow alleyways of Kabir Nagar in Northeast Delhi, where mounds of garbage are a common sight and houses stand neck to neck, the BSP office is abuzz with activity at all hours.

Community elders, party workers and those seeking favours keep filtering in and out of the glass doors adorned with posters of Mayawati and the BSP’s candidate for Northeast Delhi Haji Dilshad Ali.

It is in this constituency they hope to clinch riding high on the Muslim votebank.

Dilshad Ali is the party’s dark horse who contested the Assembly elections last year from Babarpur constituency and garnered around 28,000 votes.

In Delhi, the BSP is the only party to give tickets to three Muslim candidates – Haji Yunus from East Delhi, Haji Dilshad from Northeast Delhi and Mustkeem Ahmed (Billo) for the Chandni Chowk Lok Sabha seat.

On December 9 last year, the party high command cleared Dilshad Ali’s name for candidacy in the area. Since then, he has been working with 1,200 party workers to make sure the BSP emerges as a viable option for the community. It also helps is that neither the Congress nor the BJP have pitched Muslim candidates from the area. Varun Gandhi’s alleged remarks against the community also seem to have come at a perfect timing. “No Muslim will vote for the BJP here,” she adds.

“Muslims are like tezpatta in biryani- only for flavour. We are considered only as votebanks,” Mohd Nasir, Dilshad Ali’s driver, said.

While the party’s ideology of an “inclusive society” is at the core, it is at the same time making the most of local issues during poll season. At the top of the agenda is a decrepit Muslim graveyard for the Mustafabad, Kabir Nagar, and Babarpur areas. Without a boundary wall and heaps of garbage surrounding it, it is a haven for stray dogs sniffing around the graves.

For local Muslims, it is an emotionally sensitive issue that the party is only too ready to use for its campaign.

‘Social engineering mantra for Delhi’While the Delhi BSP has no manifesto, party workers say the party’s idea of “Samtamulak Samaj Vyavastha” will bring in the votes. The bhaichara samitis, a core programme of the BSP, has been functional in the area for months now, holding meetings and bringing people together. There are around 10 to 12 bhaichara samitis in a Vidhan Sabha constituency.

Mourinho says he is ready to takeover at Man U if asked

London, Mar.30 (ANI): Inter-Milan football team coach Jose Mourinho has said that he would be more than happy to takeover coaching and managerial duties at Manchester United once present incumbent Alex Ferguson decides to call it a day.

Speculation is mounting that Fergie will retire from football at the end of next season if he leads the club to an historic 19th league championship. United would need to clinch this season’s Premier League and successfully defend it next year to break Liverpool’s title record.

According to The Sun, Mourinho has been linked with succeeding the 67-year-old in the past.

When asked if he and United could be ‘a marriage’ when Fergie finally retires, Mourinho said: “Who can say no? Nobody could say ‘no’.

“Manchester United belongs to a small group of clubs around the world where nobody can say ‘no. But I don’t believe he is leaving in 2010. I think he will be the same the year after, healthy and happy. I don’t see a reason for him to quit and I hope he still goes on,” he added.

Former Chelsea coach Mourinho revealed he still enjoys a friendly relationship with the Scot – despite seeing his Serie A side dumped out of the Champions League by Fergie’s Red Devils.

He added: “We both know how to lose and we know how to win.

Mourinho also refused to rule out a future switch to international management – and claimed a move to the United States could be on the cards. (ANI)

Congress will win Andhra elections: Reddy

Hyderabad, Mar 21 (ANI): Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Y S Rajasekhara Reddy on Saturday expressed his confidence that Congress would win the coming elections in the state.

Addressing a press conference at the Congress Legislature Party office in Hyderabad, Reddy said, “There is absolutely no anti-incumbency against our government because we have taken up unprecedented development. At the same time, we implemented massive welfare measures which left people with no complaints whatsoever against the government.”

He informed that all major surveys conducted by reputed agencies in recent months have revealed that Congress is a favourite amongst the voters.

“It will be a positive vote for us and we will clinch the gold medal in the electoral race,” exclaimed Reddy.

He asserted that the credibility of his government in Andhra Pradesh has increased with the fulfillment of all promises made during the 2004 election campaigns.

Reddy said that the main opposition in the state, Telugu Desam Party (TDP) could not perform well which led to the birth of actor Chiranjeevi’s Praja Rajyam Party (PRP). Even if there is a certain amount of anti-incumbency, such votes will now be split between TDP and PRP, making it smoother for the Congress, he pointed out.

Criticising the grand alliance including Telugu Desam Party (TDP), Telangana Rashtra Samiti (TRS), Communist Party of India (CPI) and Communist Party of India- Marxist (CPI-M), Reddy said that there was no ideological cohesion among them.

“CPM is a major party in the Third Front. But it is grossly opposed to division of states. Then how will Telangana achieve statehood,” he said.

Reddy would start his election campaign on March 25 and end it on April 21.

The 2009 general election in Andhra Pradesh would happen in two phases. The first phase is scheduled on April 16 and the second on April 22 and 23. (ANI)

Pakistan beat India 3-2 to clinch Four-Nation junior hockey championship

Johor Bahru (Malaysia), Mar.16 (ANI): Pakistan has defeated India 3-2 to clinch the Four-Nation junior hockey tournament here.

The Indian team failed to capitalize on its lead of 1-0 till the half time as the Pakistan players showcased a brilliant fight back to level the score at 2-2 at the final whistle.

Pak captain, Haseem Khan then produced a golden goal in the extra time which shattered the hope of the Indian squad of winning the title.

For India, it was Mandeep Patel who first broke the Pakistani defence in the 22nd minute of play. Patel once again scored in the 46th minute, but his brilliant act failed to prevent Pakistan from leveling the score.

For Pakistan, Zubair scored in 70th minute thus taking the game in extra time where captain Haseem Khan displayed his splendid talent and helped the team pocket the series.(ANI)

If Oz wins, mental strength of young side will be sky high: Neilsen

Johannesburg, Mar.2 (ANI): Australia cricket team coach Tim Neilsen has said that if the visitors pull off a victory today against South Africa in the Johannesburg Test, the mental strength of the side that has many youngsters will be sky high.

“I can’t see anything but us winning this game,” Neilsen said after South Africa, set an improbable 454 to win, reached 2-178 at the close on the fourth day at the Wanderers Stadium in Johannesburg.

“If we do win, the mental state of this young side will be over the top. I’m really excited about this young team reaching a position where we can win this Test match,” Fox Sports quoted him as saying further.

Australia collapsed to 207 all out in their second innings as South Africa fought back on their best day of the match. But Australia’s dominance of the first three days left them well placed to bounce back from a home series defeat against the same opponents earlier in the season.

South Africa, who trailed by 246 runs on the first innings, started solidly in their second turn with the bat, with captain Graeme Smith and Neil McKenzie putting on 76 for the first wicket.

McKenzie was caught behind off Mitchell Johnson for 35 but Smith and Hashim Amla batted confidently in a second wicket stand of 54 to raise hopes of a come from behind win for South Africa even better than their 414-run chase in the first Test of the Australian series in Perth last December.

But new cap Ben Hilfenhaus struck a crucial blow when Smith top-edged an attempted pull to mid-on after hitting 69 off 110 balls.

New cap Phil Hughes top-scored for Australia with 75. He was twice given not out despite gloving balls from Morne Morkel to wicketkeeper Mark Boucher, with South Africa failing to refer the decisions to television umpire Asad Rauf.

Kallis sparked the Australian collapse when he dismissed Ricky Ponting and Michael Hussey off successive deliveries. Ponting pulled a short ball to deep mid-wicket and Hussey made a mess of an attempted pull to sky the ball to square leg.

Two balls later Kallis at slip dived to his right to hold a sharp edge from Michael Clarke off left-arm spinner Paul Harris.

Hughes finally fell to a sharp diving catch at leg slip off Harris after facing 121 balls and hitting 11 fours and a six.

“It was the only part of this game where we haven’t been in control,” said Neilsen.

Neilsen said the bowlers had not been as consistent as they were in the first innings but they had the opportunity to apply enough pressure on the final day to create the eight chances they needed to clinch a win.(ANI)
