MTA subway clerks remain in limbo

(Reuters) – New York’s Metropolitan Transportation Authority on Wednesday authorized public hearings on the layoff of 260 subway station clerks, whose jobs remain in limbo until a court rules on the issue.

U.S.

The MTA, which is struggling to close a deficit of about $800 million, has appealed a court ruling that the layoffs cannot take place until public hearings are held.

The MTA’s appeal automatically stays the court order that it rehire the 260 subway station clerks, an MTA spokesman said by telephone.

“These closures were necessitated by the MTA’s dire financial situation, and the need for the savings they generate remains,” the MTA said in a statement on Tuesday.

The agency, which carries 8.4 million people a day on its buses, subways and commuter railroads, wants to lay off another 210 subway clerks who remain on the job.

MTA Chairman Jay Walder has estimated that it costs the agency about $40,000 a day to employ the 210 clerks, the spokesman said.

Transit tickets can be purchased at vending machines at all subway stations, but the Transit Workers Union says the clerks are necessary for public safety, especially after the recent bomb attempt in Times Square.

“Digital signage and cameras can’t come to the aid of passengers, and can’t offer that immediate link to police and fire that our station agents provide,” the president of TWU Local 100, John Samuelsen, said in a statement on Tuesday.

Romania unions plan general strike in June

Romanian trade unions plan to stage a one-day general strike in the public sector in early June to protest against government plans to cut wages and pensions to comply with a 20 billion euro IMF-led aid deal.

“We aim to gather around 1 million people in a general strike across Romania the day parliament will discuss the IMF- backed measures,” Marius Petcu, head of one of the country’s largest unions CNSLR Fratia, told Reuters.

Romania’s biggest trade unions decided on Wednesday to back an indefinite pay strike by around 350,000 teachers on May 31, followed by warning strikes by transport workers, railwayman, civil clerks and nurses in subsequent days.

The country’s public sector employs 1.3 million workers, a third of all jobs. Its payroll swallows 9 percent of GDP and analysts say the cost is twice as high as it should be.

Body found under hotel bed

Police in the United States have discovered the body of a missing mother under a hotel bed, which had been rented out five time since she disappeared six weeks earlier.

Police say the body was discovered on Monday after bad odour was reported in the room.

“The room had been rented approximately five times and cleaned by the hotel staff numerous times,” police said.

The bed’s mattress and box spring are encased by a metal frame which sits directly on the floor.

Police did not specify exactly where in the bed the body was found.

Sony Millbrook was reported missing on January 27 after she failed to pick her children up from school.

Her family told police they had checked the hotel where she had been living and Ms Millbrook was not there.

A hotel employee told police Ms Millbrook had last been seen in the hotel while she had been locked out of the room for failing to pay, and her belongings were still inside the apartment.

The case was transferred from missing persons to the homicide department a week later and detectives interviewed two clerks and a security guard at the hotel.

Police say they subsequently arrested Ms Millbrook’s boyfriend on a gun violation and he remains a person of interest in the case.

Kuwait NRI’s unaffected by ongoing global meltdown

Kuwait City, Apr 9 (ANI): Despite the economic recession in the Gulf, Indians working in Kuwait claim they are quite unaffected by it.

In a population of 3.4 million people in Kuwait, 600,000 are Indians. The Indian community, therefore, forms one of the largest expatriate groups here.

Najida, an Indian woman working in a travel management company, has been staying in Kuwait for the last five years.

She has been working in the travel industry for the last 15 years and believes that the impact of recession is very slow on Indians living and working in Kuwait.

“So far I would say, the recession does not have much impact on the Indians as yet … unlike Dubai or other neighbouring countries, it has a much slower impact here,” said Najida.

Insia Anwar, another Indian working in Kuwait as a managing director of Varco Centre (a company dealing with computers) said that although there is some news of job cuts in other Gulf regions like Dubai, Oman and Saudi Arabia, the economy of Kuwait is quite strong.

“Honestly, the economic slowdown hasn’t really affected this part of Kuwait so much,” said Anwar.

Indians living in Kuwait are a diverse lot with a sizeable number of people involved in high-end well-paying jobs as managers in banks, petroleum companies, investment fund firms and IT firms.

Indians also forms the back-up community, keeping the wheels of the day-to-day life running in the Gulf. Cooks, chauffeurs, housemaids and clerks, mostly from South India, have added to the diversity of this oil-rich Gulf country. By Lokendra Singh (ANI)
