Pakistan got 970-mn dollars and not 3-bn dollars from US

Islamabad, Sep 17 (ANI): The United States has provided 970 million dollars in aid to Pakistan since the PPP-led Government came to power and not three billion dollars as claimed by US Ambassador Anne Patterson, a Pakistani Finance Ministry official has said.

The statement of US Ambassador to Pakistan, Anne Patterson, about giving 3 billion dollars assistance to the Zardari Government even surprised the top economic managers of the country. They were completely clueless about the figure of 3 billion dollars floated by the US.

“Out of the total 970 million dollars funding, a major chunk of 550 to 600 million dollars was in shape of the Coalition Support Fund (CSF) as it was the money which was spent by Pakistan on military’s movement and it took several months for clearance from the US authorities,” The News quoted a a senior official of the Finance Ministry, as saying.

The US has provided less than one billion dollars to Pakistan since the PPP-led government came into power, he said.

The US provided 497 million dollars in shape of CSF in May 2009. Earlier, the US provided around 100 million dollars on the same head a couple of months back – at the end of last financial year.

Around 300 million dollars were provided through USAID during the last financial year. Recently, the US authorities provided over 100 million dollars for the internally displaced persons (IDPs) of the Malakand Division.

“The US ambassador should provide details of 3 billion dollars assistance given to Pakistan during the last one and a half years period,” the official said.

Official sources pointed out that Pakistan was bearing the borrowing cost owing to delays in payments from the US related to the CSF. (ANI)

Pak-based terrorists exploiting Britain’s shoddy visa system

London, Sep 10 (ANI): Pakistan-based terrorists are exploiting Britain’s shoddy visa system to come to the country.

Pakistan is considered by Britain as the No.1 base for Islamic extremists brainwashing potential terrorists.

More than 60,000 Pakistanis were given UK visas in the past nine months, but only 29 underwent face-to-face security interviews, The Sun reports.

The Home Office admitted the shocking record in Commons answers.

The new figures mean UK risk assessment officials in Pakistan could easily be dishing out visas to terror suspects.

Ministers have also admitted not a single visa applicant had a phone interview before getting entry clearance. And each application was dealt with in just 11 minutes; nothing like the time security experts say is needed.

Shadow Home Secretary Chris Grayling said: “There are very real concerns that the system is being abused, and clear security issues too.” (ANI)

West Bengal Government scraps Rajarhat IT park project

Kolkata, Sep.7 (ANI): The West Bengal government on Monday scrapped plans for an IT-related township in the Rajarhat area near Salt Lake City in the wake of a land scam involving land sharks and government officials.

The State Government had revealed last month that it had acquired land for the Infosys and Wipro complexes.

The state Cabinet went far beyond the waiving aside of the urban land ceiling to enable promoters procure the rest of the land. The government also promised to facilitate the process of land conversion (from agricultural to non-agricultural). Clause 5.51 under Section D of the MoU clearly states that Webel shall enable the joint venture company to get all clearance and “applicable permits” under the law, including “conversion of land”.

The government stayed away from procuring land on its own. Instead, it gave the JVC a long rope and agreed on getting land from this company on lease, leaving 600 acres to the private partners for commercial use. Not only that, the private promoters set the terms for Webel’s activities on the leasehold land. Clause 4.6 of the MoU states: “With a view to meet the requirement of small IT companies for built-up space, if Webel intends to develop IT parks, the Joint Venture partner Vedic Diamond will be given the first right of refusal to develop such facilities.”

Imran encourages Shoaib not to waste last few years of international cricket

Lahore, Sep 7 (ANI): Former Pakistan captain Imran Khan has advised bad boy of Pakistan cricket Shoaib Akhtar not to waste his last few years of international cricket and try to work hard to get back into the team and then go out with honour and pride.

Shoaib went to attend a fund-raising campaign for Imran’s Shaukat Khanum Research Cancer Hospital, but declined to speak on cricket issues with the media.

The fast bowler, who has had a bad last few months and was not considered for the Sri Lanka tour or the Champions Trophy, also appeared fitter having shed considerable weight.

“Imran basically told him that if he gets back into the team and does well, everyone would forget his past and only remember the present. Imran told Shoaib he needs to work hard on his fitness,” the Daily Times quoted a source, as saying.

Chief selector Iqbal Qasim has also made it clear that if Shoaib wants to make a comeback to the Pakistan team, he needs to change his attitude and be more positive.

“Shoaib can still play for Pakistan, provided he works hard on his fitness. But I think he also needs to work on improving his relations with the board,” Qasim said.

The PCB is willing to give the fast bowler another chance as it has completely played down the issue of a show cause notice issued to Shoaib in July for appearing on a television talk show without seeking a clearance.

Shoaib is said to have apologised for his mistake, which pleased the board.

“If Shoaib can improve his attitude, behaviour and be more disciplined and focused he is still an asset for the Pakistan team,” a former Test player at the function said. (ANI)

SC committee: Halt Noida park construction

New Delhi, Sep 4 (ANI): The Supreme Court appointed Central Empowered Committee (CEC) has recommended on Friday to halt the construction of Ambedkar Park in Noida with immediate effect.

The Mayawati Government is constructing the Bhimrao Ambedkar Park in Noida with an estimated cost of Rs.550 crore on the banks of the River Yamuna.

The committee has sighted the violation of environmental laws as the reason for such recommendation.

According to sources, the committee headed by former Union Environment Secretary, P.V. Jayakrishna has conveyed the apex court that the project does not have the required environmental clearance.

The court is expected to give its opinion on the recommendations next week.

The Uttar Pradesh government on Thursday accused the Central Government of obstructing the dream projects of Mayawati.

The project came into the spotlight after a residents’ association of Noida moved a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) before the apex court raising environment issues against the construction

The apex court constituted the CEC to look into the issue following which the committee visited the site Aug 12. (ANI)

PPP has not given any ‘guarantee’ regarding Musharraf indemnity: Kaira

Islamabad, Sep.4 (ANI): Pakistan Information and Broadcasting Minister Qamar Zaman Kaira has rebutted reports regarding Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) giving assurance not to prosecute former President General Pervez Musharraf on high treason charges.

Kaira said the PPP has not given any ‘guarantee’ to any country regarding clemency to Musharraf.

“Though friendly countries generally give advice on various matters but it is not binding on the government,” Kaira said.

In an interview with The Nation, he categorically rejected media reports that Musharraf’s step down was pre-planned and a part of a ‘secret’ arrangement.

“PPP had expelled Musharraf from Aiwan-e-Sadr with the support of masses,” he stressed.

When asked about Interior Advisor, Rehman Malik’s visit to Saudi Arabia, just before Musharraf’s meeting with king Abdullah bin Abdul Aziz, Kaira said it was a routine affair and it had nothing to do with the Musharraf issue.

Kaira also denied presence of US Blackwater on Pakistani soil, saying Islamabad would never allow any private security agency to operate inside country’s territory.

“Some personnel of private security agencies of the US after taking clearance by the government are protecting the NATO trucks which transport supplies from Port Qasim to Afghanistan and nothing else,” he said.

“As the US is leading war against terror therefore its facilities and staff are more prone to terror attacks than other countries therefore they need more security to protect themselves,” he added. (ANI)

After acne, Diaz now battling psoriasis

Washington, June 25 (ANI): After battling acne for years, Cameron Diaz has yet another skin condition to deal with.

The movie beauty has a nasty case of psoriasis just below her right elbow – and the itch is known as ‘heartbreak’ by skin doctors, because it doesn’t clear easily and can come back.

Psoriasis is a pesky form of non-contagious inflammation.

Diaz dared to bare her arms as she unveiled her star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame on Monday and onlookers could clearly make out the mark on the actress’ sleeve.

Celebrity skin expert Dr. Vail Reese has been scrutinising the actress’ scabs and pimples for years and he insists the ringworm on her arm is just the latest in a long line of pigment problems for the actress.

“After battling acne for years, yet another skin condition to deal with! She has also suffered with facial pigmentation issues and sun overexposure,” Contactmusic quoted Reese as saying.

“Though she is not my patient, it looks she has a form of psoriasis, that’s showing some clearance in the center portion.

“Treatment for small areas involves prescription topical cortisone creams and vitamin D creams. Extensive psoriasis can be treated with injectable anti-inflammatory medicines called biologics.

Since they suppress the immune system and can increase the risk of infections, those tend to be reserved for wider areas,” he added. (ANI)

Intruding US aircraft was carrying medicines and not weapons, discloses IAF

New Delhi June 20 (ANI): After a thorough interrogation and search Indian authorities confirmed that the military cargo aircraft, which has landed in Mumbai air port yesterday was carrying medicines to the US troops operating in Afghanistan and no weapons or ammunition were on board said IAF spokesperson Wg Cdr Tarun Kumar Singha.

Speaking to ANI Wg Cdr Singha said the aircraft was hired by the US military, from a Russian agency. All the 18 persons including the crewmembers who were in the aircraft were civilians and belonged to the Russian agency.

The hired military cargo aircraft violated the Indian air space near Gujarat yesterday and was forced to land at Mumbai’s Chatrapati Shivaji International Airport.

The aircraft was travelling from Diego Garcia island, a military base of the US near Mauritius in the Indian Ocean, to Kandahar in Afghanistan.

Wg Cdr Singha said that according to norms any hired civilian aircrafts for the military purposes has to get an AOR clearance form the IAF on this case the Russian agency did not obtain the clearance, the Mumbai ATR instructed the captain to land the aircraft.

He denied the report of IAF planes escorting the intruded aircraft and said the pilot followed the instruction given by the ATR, so the question of escort does not arise.

The Indian authorities have given the clearance to the aircraft to fly. Shreeraj Gudi (ANI)

CIA launches ambitious program to improve agency’s foreign language proficiency

Washington, May 30(ANI): The Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) has launched an ambitious program to double the number of analysts proficient in languages, which it deems critical in the fight against America’s enemies.

It was done five years after 9/11 Commission faulted inadequate language skills among its employees.

CIA Director Leon Panetta, announced the new initiative in an acknowledgement of the agency’s slow progress in adding employees fluent in languages such as Arabic, Farsi and Urdu.

“To gather intelligence and understand a complex world, the CIA must have more officers who read, speak, and understand foreign languages,” Panetta said.

Panetta unveiled plans for recruiting more officers fluent in foreign languages and for retraining thousands of current employees, using the agency’s in-house “CIA University.

“The agency will offer night classes and online training, and will enable new recruits to study languages while awaiting security clearance. In addition to doubling the number of officers competent in certain “mission-critical” languages, the agency seeks to increase by 50 percent the number of analysts fluent in the dialect of the culture or region to which they are assigned,” Panetta said.

The CIA had recently reported that a small fraction of its overall workforce, about 13 percent, is fluent in a second language.

Among officers of the agency’s National Clandestine Service, to which most foreign-deployed officers are assigned, the figure is about 30 percent.

The 9/11 Commission had identified lack of skilled translators as a factor in the U.S. government’s failure to prevent the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks. The commission found that, had the intercepted communications been translated on time, the U.S. officials could have been alerted.

“The foreign-language deficit is a government-wide problem that reflects flaws in the security-clearance process. Often, CIA job applicants who are fluent in key languages have been turned away because they have relatives living in countries where terrorists are known to operate,” said Amy Zegart, an expert on intelligence reform and an associate professor at the University of alifornia. Allahabad High Court stalls Ganga Expressway project

Allahabad, May 30 (ANI): The Allahabad High Court has barred the Uttar Pradesh Government from proceeding ahead on the ambitious eight-laned Ganga Expressway project and directed the concerned authorities to obtain prior clearance from environmental board.

A bench comprising Justice Ashok Bhusan and Justice Arun Tandon on Friday passed this order on the petition filed by two voluntary organisations, which questioned the environmental feasibility of the project.

The Court has stayed further work on over 1000 kilometres long project that would connect the eastern and western boundaries of Uttar Pradesh because of environmental concerns.

“The Allahabad High Court has restrained the proceedings of The Ganga-Express way, the 1100 kilometre long expressway from Noida to Ballia because of environmental issues. The project was started by the Mayawati government,” said Arun Kumar Gupta, counsel for petitioners.

Further he informed that court has also asked the state government to obtain clearance from the state-level Environment Impact Assessment Authority. The High Court has also quashed the earlier environmental clearance granted by the Environmental Protection Authority. The court also directed UP government not to proceed with the highway project unless and until it obtains a due clearance from the state-level Environment Impact Assessment Authority (SEIAA),” Gupta added.

Meanwhile, the petitioners welcomed the court verdict.

“The condition of pollution in Uttar Pradesh is already alarming.

So how anyone can grant permission for 32 new cities and eight new SEZ (Special Economic Zones)? Taking into consideration all these, the Ganga Mahasabha had filed a petition in the High Court. We are extremely happy that the court has come up with a 93 page order. This is the victory of devotees of River Ganga,” said Jitendranand Swami, a petitioner. (ANI)

Shoaib suffering from a “mysterious disease”

Lahore, May 19 (ANI): Rawalpindi Express Shoaib Akhtar is becoming a problem for the Pakistan Cricket Board, as a source has claimed the fast bowler is suffering from a “mysterious infectious disease”.

The source said the doctor treating him is not disclosing the disease, leaving the board in a fix and compelling it to take action against the maverick bowler, who has always remained in news for one reason or another, be it for fitness, doping or indiscipline.

Akhtar could find himself in more trouble with the PCB contemplating disciplinary action against the controversial pacer for violating the central contract with regard to his medical report submitted for skipping the national camp held in the hill resort of Bhurban.

However, his absence from the team at this juncture would be a great blow for the Pakistan team, The Nation reported.

Reports coming from the PCB said that board officials were unhappy with Akhtar’s medical report that allowed him to skip the conditioning camp.

Akhtar has missed the camp stating that he had a skin infection near his groin and the doctor had advised him seven to eight days rest. Incidentally, he later said he would be available for the practice matches in Lahore from May 21 ahead of the Twenty20 World Cup.

“The PCB top officials are not happy that Shoaib Akhtar again went to a private doctor without consulting or seeking permission of the medical panel of the PCB,” a source said.

He said as per his central contact with the board, Akhtar had to consult the PCB medical panel in case of any illness or fitness problem and only seek private help after getting clearance from the panel.

The source said the PCB’s view was that since Akhtar was getting medical attention privately, the board could not be held responsible if he faces any doping problems during the T20 World up in England. (ANI)

IPL ratings on the downswing after first year high

New Delhi, Apr.24 (ANI): The Indian Premier League is struggling to match the immense interest of last year’s inaugural season after organisers were forced to shift the 37-day Twenty20 tournament to South Africa.

The inaugural IPL’s TV rating attracted top-spending advertisers last year, but viewers’ attention now seems to be wavering.

The IPL is being played April 18-May 24 across eight cities in South Africa after organisers failed to get a security clearance from the Indian government due to a clash of dates with the general elections.

Replicating the success of the IPL’s first edition in 2008 was always going to be tough, but audience ratings have taken on more importance since the shift away from India has effectively turned the IPL into a made-for-television event, reports SAPA.

“The start hasn’t been as bright as last year’s, but media watchers say IPL’s second season still promises to be a big hit on TV,” reported The Times of India newspaper.

The Times, quoting audience measurement agency INTAM Media Research, said the first day’s IPL telecast from South Africa “notched up a TRP (television rating points) of 5.55 percent.”

Last year, the IPL had averaged around a TRP of 5 percent throughout the series, sustaining itself as the top TV programme in the country of one billion-plus people across 44 days.

The Business Standard newspaper said the dip in viewing figures has not surprised media agencies.

“The novelty factor was missing since this is the second year. This trend is also noticeable for realty shows that air for the second or third time,” the Business Standard quoted Havas Media India’s chief executive Anita Nayyar as saying. (ANI)
