U.S. seeks details on China-Pakistan nuclear deal

(Reuters) – The United States was seeking clarification from China on its deal earlier this year to build two new civilian nuclear reactors for Pakistan, the State Department said on Tuesday.

Politics

“We have asked China to clarify the details of its sale of additional nuclear reactors to Pakistan. This appears to extend beyond cooperation that was grandfathered when China was approved for membership in the Nuclear Suppliers Group,” State Department spokesman P.J. Crowley told reporters.

“We believe that such cooperation would require a specific exemption approved by consensus of the Nuclear Suppliers Group,” Crowley said.

The United States was expected to oppose the China-Pakistan deal next week at a meeting of the Nuclear Suppliers Group.

The 46-nation group controls trade in “dual-use” nuclear fuel, materials and technology to ensure they are applied only to civilian nuclear energy programs and not diverted into clandestine nuclear weapons work.

The Washington Post reported that China has suggested that the sale is grandfathered from before it joined the NSG in 2004, because it was completing work on two earlier reactors for Pakistan at the time.

Italy deplores killing of civilians on flotilla

May 31 (Reuters) – Italy on Monday condemned the killing of civilians during Israel’s storming of an aid flotilla bound for the blockaded Gaza Strip as “very grave” and asked for an EU investigation to ascertain the facts.

“I deplore in the strongest terms the killing of civilians. This is certainly a grave act,” said Foreign Minister Franco Frattini.

Referring to the European Commission, he said it was “indispensable that there be an inquest to ascertain the facts, which are still not clear.”

He also said he had asked the Israeli ambassador for clarification and hoped that it would not hurt efforts on the part of Israel and Turkey to cooperate in the search for Middle East peace.

“The German government is shocked by events in the international waters by Gaza,” government spokesman Ulrich Wilhelm told a regular news conference, adding the government deeply regretted the loss of life.

Thai protesters agree to November elections

Thailand’s Red Shirt protesters have accepted an offer for elections to be held in November, but they are refusing to leave their rally site in central Bangkok until the government agrees to a raft of conditions.

The government made the offer yesterday in a bid to end the eight-week stand-off with protesters in the capital.

Local newspapers report the Red Shirts are reluctant to accept the government’s reconciliation plan but gave broad agreement in order to avoid losing public support.

A key sticking point is the election timing – both the government and the Red Shirts want to be in power when the budget is passed and a planned military reshuffle occurs in September.

Tens of thousands rallied at the protest stage to hear the protest leaders’ decision on the government’s proposal.

Protest leader Sean Boonpracong told the crowd it was time to negotiate and said the decision to do so was unanimous.

“We would like to, for the sake of reconciliation, enter into an agreement. We want to negotiate, all of us,” he said.

But while the protesters purport to have accepted prime minister Abhisit Vejjajiva’s road map to reconciliation, that acceptance is highly conditional.

They are demanding the reopening of anti-government media outlets, that the military be pulled back, and a clearer picture of when parliament would be dissolved.

“[We want] the power to determine an election dialogue to the election commission. It is not within the power of the prime minister,” another Red Shirt leader Veera Musigapong said.

“We want a clarification of the timing when the prime minister will dissolve the parliament.”

Thailand has lost $2.2 billion so far as a result of the protests that have shut down central Bangkok.

Almost 50 countries have recommended against their citizens visiting and that will not change until some normality returns to the city.

Even if elections are held in November, there is still high potential for continuing political instability.

Political science professor at Chulalongkorn University in Bangkok, Thitinan Pongsudhirak, says election campaigning before a November poll could turn nasty.

“It could actually exacerbate the confrontation and …. it could end up in the same vicious cycle,” he said.

“Whoever wins, the losers will not accept and there will be accusations of fraud and so on.”

He says the success of the election will depend on clear guidelines being set now.

“A lot of this is about posturing, posturing and trying to position yourselves to bargain from a position of strength,” he said.

“So a lot of this has to do with bargaining negotiations, tactics. But most important of all, to me, is the establishment of goodwill and good faith.”

FFA prefers Fowler to stay with Fury

As Sydney FC prepares to swoop on star striker Robbie Fowler, Football Federation Australia (FFA) has revealed its preference is for the former Liverpool great to remain with the struggling Fury.

Fowler is expected to part from the Fury, who have been bailed out by FFA following revelations the club’s founder Don Matheson has suffered losses in the realm of $4.5 million.

There had been talks of Fowler adopting a player-coach role with the Fury, but that has been vetoed by the FFA, with Sydney now the prolific scorer’s likely destination.

The Sky Blues have an opening for their marquee player position due to John Aloisi’s departure for new club Melbourne Heart and would be prepared to pay Fowler the $750,000 he reportedly earned last season with the Fury.

Newcastle, which has been very active in the player market during the off-season, has also expressed an interest in Fowler, but Sydney is expected to gain the services of a player it chased three years ago.

FFA chief executive Ben Buckley says his organisation would prefer Fowler to stick with the Fury, having become the face of the club over the past year.

“We’ve had some conversations with clubs in the last 48 hours seeking clarification whether Robbie can be contacted and whether he’s available to play at other clubs,” he said.

“We’ve passed that information on to his management.

“We would like to see Robbie stay in Australia. Ideally we’d like to see him stay in Townsville at the North Queensland Fury.

“But if that’s not the case, we’d like to see him continue to play football in Australia.”

Sydney FC chief executive Edwin Lugt insists Fowler is yet to sign with the club, but the reigning champions are keen to bring him to the harbour city.

US, Israel fail to resolve diplomatic crisis

Washington, Mar 25(ANI): The United States and Israel have failed to resolve a diplomatic crisis sparked off by Israel”s housing plans for East Jerusalem, despite a high-level visit to Washington by Israeli Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu.

Netanyahu returned to Israel on Thursday, ending a troubled three-day visit, where he held two separate meetings with United States President Barack Obama.

According to reports, the talks failed over Israeli defiance on the issue of settlements and silence maintained by both sides after his three-and-a-half-hour visit to the White House.

The meeting was overshadowed by Israeli approval for 20 homes built for Jews in Jerusalem, a move denounced by one senior US official as “exactly what we expect Prime Minister Netanyahu to get control of”.

However, White House press secretary Robert Gibbs said that Obama had asked Netanyahu for confidence-building gestures and clarification of his position on settlements.

He also described the talks as “honest and straightforward”.

In Jerusalem, the Israeli Government press office issued a statement saying that the talks had been held in a good atmosphere.

“They went on longer than expected with the leaders meeting for 90 minutes, then again for half an hour after a long private discussion between Netanyahu and his advisers in the White House Roosevelt Room,” The Times quoted the statement, as saying. (ANI)

Was Lady Gaga born gay?

Washington, Mar 24 (ANI): Lady Gaga is said to have grouped herself with women who she said are born gay in a recent radio interview.

Her sexuality has earned much speculation, and she recently let it slip that she’s gay.

“There are transsexual women and transgender women and suddenly it becomes poisonous because there are some people in this world that believe being gay is a choice,” Fox News quoted her as saying.

“It’s not a choice, WE are born this way,” she told 2Day FM’s Kyle & Jackie O Radio show while on tour in Australia last week.

As she discussed the racy music video for her latest Beyonce collaboration ‘Telephone,’ Gaga continued to hint that she is gay.

“For me, this video is groundbreaking because it has one foot in the art community and one foot in the commercial world,” she added.

Her representatives declined to comment, when asked for clarification. (ANI)

Confusion over Monaro airstrip plans

The Cooma-Monaro Shire Council in the New South Wales South East says an application to build airstrips on a Monaro property needs more clarification.

Plans to build two airstrips 9km south of Michelago has led to a community backlash, with people saying the development will affect their rural lifestyle.

The Council says issues such as the extent of use of the airstrip need to be clarified with the development applicants.

Director of Environmental Services Peter Smith says there is an element of confusion about the issue.

“The application with us is still current,” he said.

“The current application has not been rejected.

“We have asked that the applicant provide us with some more comprehensive information.

“The applicants have indicated that they wanted to amend the application, our advice to them was that they need to amend the whole application.”

Buta Singh says he is ready to be questioned by CBI

New Delhi, Aug. 31 (ANI): Former Bihar Governor Buta Singh on Monday informed the Delhi High Court that he was ready to be questioned by CBI in connection with the bribery case involving his son.

His willingness to testify comes following CBI’s clarification that the chairman of National Commission for Scheduled Castes is required to be questioned as a witness and not as an accused in the bribery case. ingh said he would be available to CBI on September 10 at 11 am at his office, and the probe agency officials can come and question him.

Justice Geeta Mittal, after recording the statement given by Singh’s counsel, disposed the matter and asked the investigating agency to question Buta Singh on the date given by him.

The High Court had on August 26 sought response from the CBI on a petition filed by Singh, who had accused the probe agency of illegally summoning him for interrogation in an alleged bribery case.

Singh had contended that he holds a post of Cabinet rank and the CBI cannot question or interrogate him without taking sanction from the Centre.

He had on August 25 approached the Delhi High Court challenging CBI’s notice to appear before it in connection with a case of alleged bribery against his son Sarobjit Singh.

Singh’s son was arrested on July 31 by CBI for allegedly demanding a bribe of one crore rupees from a Nashik- based contractor to close an atrocity case against him pending before the Scheduled Caste Commission headed by his father. (ANI)

Police resort to cane charge to quell unruly youth seeking jobs in Chhattisgarh

Durg (Chhattisgarh), Aug 31 (ANI): Police in Durg district resorted to baton charge to quell an unruly protest by a bunch of youth seeking jobs at a local cement company.

Violence started when hundreds of local youth, under the aegis of the Chhattisgarh Swabhiman Manch (self-respect group), tried to storm the hotel where the company was holding interviews for various posts.

Police caned and chased away the unruly mob.

“Their way of protesting was against law. We asked them to protest in a lawful manner but they tried to barge into the hotel and when security personnel tried to prevent them they started bullying. In order to control them we used mild force and arrested some protestors,” said M. L. Kotwani, Additional Superintendent of Police.

Protestors accused police and local authorities of colluding with the representatives of the cement company.

“The manager of the JP Group is following a discriminatry against us and local authorities and police are cane charging instead of helping us. This is an injustice and we seek clarification from the state government,” said Mahesh, a protestor.

Lack of job opportunities for locals has in recent years triggered protests and even violence against outsiders in several parts of India. (ANI)

Dr A Q Khan clarifies

Islamabad, Aug.28 (ANI): Pakistan’s former chief nuclear scientist A Q Khan has given a clarification to the recent spate of reactions to his article on the importance of computer technology.

The News quotes him as saying: “The acknowledgement as to the source was put at the end of Part II because it was originally written as one long article. Had Mr Dogar, who initiated this controversy, waited for the second part (Part I clearly said “To be continued”), all this would have been avoided.”

“However, I would like to point out that a newspaper article is not the same as a research paper in a reputed magazine, which does, indeed, require full referencing. Since I had been receiving numerous requests from students to write on this topic I used notes I had made about seven years ago from various well-known university syllabuses, not even remembering which notes were from which university.”

“I did not go online to any source. Obviously the syllabuses have not changed much in all these years! I purposely left the text in the same simple-to-understand original language because it was meant for students and laymen, not professionals. A university brochure is neither someone’s personal intellectual property, nor does it require referencing,” Khan says further.

“My friend and former colleague, Engineer Nasim Khan, provided information on various related American websites with comments-what is wrong with that? Those who insinuated negatively about his professional capabilities are ignorant and disparate,” he concludes. (ANI)

Sujata Koirala says she skipped India trip due to illness

Kathmandu, Aug 26 (ANI): Nepal Foreign Minister Sujata Koirala has said that she failed to accompany Prime Minister Madhav Kumar Nepal in his maiden visit to India purely due to health reasons.

At the Nepali Congress Parliamentary Party office where she was summoned to furnish clarification as to why she dropped out of Prime Minister’s visit to India, Koirala, said that there were no other intentions behind it other than the sudden illness she developed on the eve of departure.

Earlier, Koirala had turned down the parliamentary party’s call to be present at the party headquarters on this case, instead sending a written statement where she said she was compelled to cancel her India trip because she was ill.

However, there were rumors that she pulled out of the scheduled India visit due to her dissatisfaction over Madhav Kumar not promoting her to the post of the Deputy Prime Minister.

At the previous parliamentary party meeting majority of the Nepali Congress lawmakers had said that Koirala’s decision to skip the visit to India not only damaged the party’s and country’s credibility and demanded that Koirala be recalled from the cabinet, Nepalnews reported. (ANI)

Iranian lawyer says to seek permission to meet detained UK embassy staffer

Tehran, July 4 (ANI): An Iranian lawyer has said that he is seeking the permission of the concerned authorities here to see a detained British embassy staffer who has been accused of “acting against national security”.

“I have not met with him yet, but I will ask the judiciary for an appointment,” The Telegraph quoted lawyer Abolsamad Khorramshahi, as saying.

Meanwhile, British Foreign Secretary David Miliband has said that he is “urgently seeking clarification” from the Iranian authorities after a senior official said that some locally recruited staff of the British embassy would face trial.

Miliband said he was “deeply concerned” about staff being detained, and said he was confident that they had engaged in no illegal activities.

Ayatollah Ahmad Jannati, the head of the Guardians Council – the powerful watchdog body, claimed on Friday that embassy staff had instigated the violent protests that followed the June 12 presidential election. He said some would be prosecuted.

A total of nine local staff at the British embassy in Tehran were initially arrested late last month, but the British government said seven have since been released. Iranian state television has said just one remains in custody.

Tehran has already expelled two British diplomats since the election, prompting reciprocal expulsions by London. (ANI)

Akal Takht asks SGPC to reshape Golden temple’s replica in Sangrur

Amritsar, June 21 (ANI): Taking objection to the design of a Gurdwara being constructed as the Golden Temple’s replica at Malerkotla in Sangrur district of Punjab, Akal Takht, the high temporal seat of the Sikhs, has directed Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC), the premier body of Sikhs, to ensure necessary modifications.

The construction of the controversial gurudwara at Malerkotla has upset devotees as well as the Shiromani Gurudwara Prabandhak Committee (SGPC), the apex body managing Sikh shrines.

On Saturday, the Jathedar of Akal Takht along with other four Jathedars decided that the replica of the Golden Temple should be reshaped with modifications which should include filling the gurdwara’s Sarovar with earth, demolishing four domes made in four corners of gurdwara, and changing gurdwara’s name.

The decision was taken during a meeting of various Sikh religious bodies. The meet was intended to reach a unanimous decision to prevent a Gurudwara Management body to make replica of Sikhs most revered shrine Golden Temple.

However, the roots of the controversy go back 40 years ago. A shrine, owned by Mastuana Dera, a Sikh sect headed by Sant Sadhu Singh, had been under construction since 1967. However, the construction work was stopped twice after the intervention of the SGPC and Akal Takht earlier. But recent attempts to restart that work on the incomplete shrine have invited fury and objections.

On Saturday, Gurbachan Singh, the Jathedar of Akal Takht in a news conference told media that the management committee of the Mastuana Dera appeared before the Akal Takht and submitted its written apology. But no one should be allowed to build the replica of the Golden Temple and anyone involved in such an act should be punished.

Singh said that the Akal Takht had ordered SGPC to reshape the building and SGPC should take over the construction work and no one else would be allowed to construct any thing at the controversial building.

Akal Takht in its direction to SGPC has stated that while reshaping the building of the said Gurudwara all the dooms should be demolished. There should be a single doom constructed as it appears on many gurdwaras. The name of the Gurudwara should be “Singh Sabha Mastuana”.

Jathedar also said that the constructed “Har ki Pauri” and the bridge should also be also pulled down and a new varanda should be constructed around the building.

He said Baba Baldev Singh Suharaewala, who dared to hurt religious sentiments of Sikhs, would be summoned at Akal Takht to submit his clarification.

SGPC President Avtar Singh Makkar has said that SGPC would go abide by the order given by the Akal Takht, the high temporal seat of Sikhs. By Ravinder Singh Robin (ANI)
