Great Recession Doesn’t Slow the Greening of GE

Ecomagination continues to pay big dividends for General Electric, according to its just-released sustainability report.

After investing $1.5 billion in ecomagination products since 2005 — and growing the portfolio from 17 products to 90 — GE has earned $18 billion in revenue on ecomagination products. The success of ecomagination has led the company to greatly increase its investment in the coming years, putting an additional $8.5 billion in R&D investments in ecomagination by 2015.

With its sixth annual report, entitled “Renewing Responsibilities,” GE set a goal of growing ecomagination revenues twice as fast as the company itself grows.

Of course, in the wake of the Great Recession, the company isn’t necessarily growing that fast — revenues in 2009 declined by 14 percent — but ecomagination revenues were up 6 percent in 2009.

Despite the economic hit GE has taken, the companies overarching environmental initiatives are having an even larger impact on its footprint: Its overall intensities in water use, energy use and greenhouse gas emissions are down more than 30 percent each, with emissions intensity down 39 percent and overall emissions down 22 percent.

GE continues to set ambitious environmental goals on its intensities — the amount of resources used per million dollars of revenue — including a goal of 50 percent reductions in energy intensity from its 2004 baseline, a 25 percent reduction in emissions over a 2004 baseline, and a 30 percent reduction in water intensity over a 2006 baseline.

The full report is available online and in downloadable format from GE.com/Citizenship.

Egypt to strip citizenship of men marrying Israeli women

Cairo, June 6 (IANS) An Egyptian court has ruled that men who marry Israeli women will be stripped of their citizenship, a media report said.

The State Council’s Supreme Administrative Court Saturday upheld a ruling issued by a first instance administrative court on dropping the Egyptian nationality from men who are married to Israeli women, Xinhua reported citing a statement from Egypt’s official MENA news agency.

There cannot be any appeal against the ruling, the court said.

The court asked the interior ministry to send the files of Egyptians married to Arab Israelis and Jewish Israelis to the cabinet.

It said the cabinet would have to see whether to strip the men of their Egyptian citizenship or not and that each case should be debated separately.

This ruling is meant to protect Egypt’s youths and its national security, lawyer Nabil al-Wahsh, who took the case to the court in the first place, was quoted as saying.

‘The ruling is so important as it comes at a time Israel is carrying on with its attacks against peace lovers, the latest of which was its raid on the Gaza-bound Freedom Flotilla,’ Wahsh said.

Over 30,000 Egyptian men are married to Israeli women, Wahsh claimed

Seven-year-old schoolgirl stumps Michelle Obama with immigration googly

London, May 21 (ANI): US First Lady, Michelle Obama was put in a spot when a seven-year-old girl asked whether her mother, an illegal immigrant would be deported by the Obama administration.

The incident occurred during a visit by the First Lady to the New Hampshire Estates Elementary School just outside Washington, when the little girl told the her that her mother believed “President Barack Obama was taking everybody away that doesn”t have papers”.

When Michelle Obama responded that “this was something we have to work on”, the girl replied: “But my mum doesn”t have papers.”

Michelle Obama replied: “We have to fix that. And everybody”s got to work together in Congress to make sure that that happens.”

The seemingly innocuous question has cast the spotlight on the Obama administration’s immigration policies

According to The Telegraph, Obama supports the idea of granting the country”s estimated 12 million illegal immigrants, mostly from Mexico, a “path to citizenship”. (ANI)

US mulls law to revoke citizenship of terror supporters

Washington, May 8 (IANS) Americans like Faisal Shahzad, the Pakistani origin suspect in the failed Times Square bombing, who help terrorists could have their citizenship revoked under a bill introduced this week in Congress.

The proposed Terrorist Expatriation Act would authorise the State Department to revoke citizenship of anyone who supports Al Qaeda or other terrorist groups or who helps in attacks against the US or its allies.

Identical bills were introduced this week in the House and Senate.

‘We’re fighting an enemy who doesn’t wear the uniform of a conventional army or follow the law of war,’ said Senator Joseph Lieberman, independent of Connecticut, who co-sponsored the Senate bill with Scott Brown, Republican of Massachusetts.

‘Those who join such groups join our enemy and should be deprived of the rights and privileges of US citizenship and the ability to use their American passports as tools of terror.’

The bill would expand a 1940 federal law that authorises the State Department to strip Americans of their citizenship.

Under the 1940 law, Americans could lose citizenship for serving in the military of a country at war with the US, for treason or for voting in another nation’s elections.

However, they can contest their loss of citizenship in court.

The Supreme Court narrowed the authority of the 1940 law by ruling Americans could lose citizenship only if they renounce it.

The 1967 ruling involved the case of a naturalised American born in Poland who voted in an Israeli election. The State Department took away his citizenship but he won it back in the Supreme Court.

The proposed act is likely to face a legal challenge if Congress approves it. Civil rights activists have warned of possible conflicts with the constitution’s right of equal protection for American citizens.

From the Obama administration, only Secretary of State Hillary Clinton has so far promised to ‘take a hard look’ at the proposed legislation.

‘Clearly, US citizenship is a privilege. It is not a right… And people who are serving foreign powers – or in this case, foreign terrorists – are clearly in violation, in my personal opinion, of that oath which they swore when they became citizens,’ she said during a press conference. ‘So we’re going to take a hard look at this.’

Having mistresses is a French way of life, says accused polygamist

London, Apr 27 (ANI): A Muslim Frenchman alleged by the country’s government to be living in a polygamous arrangement with four women and committing benefit fraud via their 12 children has hit out at the authorities, saying that keeping mistresses was the French way of life.

French interior minister Brice Hortefeux said Lies Hebbadj’s citizenship should be revoked if allegations that he had four wives proved to be true, reports The Telegraph.

But the Algerian-born butcher hit back, saying: “If we are stripped of nationality, for having mistresses, there would be a lot of French people stripped of nationality.

“As far as I know, mistresses are not forbidden, neither in France, nor in Islam.”

Hebbadj’s case came in the limelight after it emerged last week that his wife had been fined for driving with a face-covering veil authorities claimed hindered her vision. (ANI)

Serbia seeks extradition of suspected Nazi from U.S.

(Reuters) – A Serbian court Friday issued an international arrest warrant for a naturalized U.S. citizen suspected of committing genocide as a Nazi officer in Belgrade during World War Two.

Barack Obama

“Peter Egner, 88, is wanted on charges of killing 17,000 civilians, mainly Jews, Roma and political opponents between 1941 and 1943, during the German occupation,” Zorica Ristic, spokeswoman for the Belgrade higher court, told Reuters.

Egner, an ethnic German born in Yugoslavia, entered the United States in 1960 and became a citizen in 1966.

The U.S. Justice Department has asked a federal court to revoke his U.S. citizenship based on evidence of his role in a Nazi mobile killing unit that participated in the mass murder of more than 17,000 Serbian civilians.

Belgrade was occupied by German forces from April 1941 until October 1944. More than half a million Serb civilians were killed during World War Two.

German twins to get special adoption treatment

New Delhi, Mar 17 (ANI): The Supreme Court on Wednesday asked the Central Adoption Resources Agency (CARA) to make exception in the German twins adoption case and permit their biological parents to adopt them, so that they can move freely to Germany.

The Central Adoption Resources Agency (CARA) was to submit report in the court today.

The apex court had earlier asked the agency to look into the possibility of the father adopting the children on humanitarian grounds since Germany has refused to grant the children citizenship as surrogacy is illegal in Germany.

The twins” father Jan Balaz has been fighting the case for two years. He had approached the Gujarat High Court first and then moved the Supreme Court.

They twins were born to an Indian surrogate mother and a German couple two years ago. They have been waiting to go to Germany since then. (ANI)

Obama identified with Hitler, Stalin

Washington, Sep.19 (ANI): Even as thousands of people packed the streets of Washington on Friday to protest against government spending, some of the agitators likened President Barack Obama to Nazi dictator Adolf Hitler.

According to a CBS report, most of those would have called themselves “patriots” arguing that their government was betraying traditional principles.

Steve Butler, a physician from Indiana was handing out copies of the Constitution. “If you read the quotes of Thomas Jefferson, these guys were conservatives and they said that the control should be with the people and not with the big government.”

There were plenty of signs identifying Obama with Hitler, or Stalin, that questions his citizenship, that seems to celebrate the death of a famous liberal.

But perhaps what most united these protesters was a broader discontent: a sense that they are not being heard, that their interests, and the national interests, are in the hands of a few. (ANI)

Amy Winehouse ‘to record her next album in Caribbean language’

London, July 12 (ANI): Amy Winehouse reportedly wants to record her next album in Kwéyól, the local dialect of St Lucia.

The troubled singer who has applied for citizenship of the Caribbean town might as well be taking intensive lessons to learn the local language.

She is still undecided if major changes need to be done to the lyrics she has already written in English.

“Amy hasn’t decided whether to translate the tracks she’s already written or to write something else that better suits the sound of the language,” the News of the World quoted a source as saying

However, the revelation has left chiefs at ‘Island Records’ fuming.

They expected to release the Grammy winner’s album next year and stage her comeback after a string of controversies related to drug abuse.

A top music insider said: “There’s no way we can release an album with Amy singing in a Caribbean language. We’d be a laughing stock – it would be a commercial flop.” (ANI)

Australian government working to ensure safety of foreign students

New Delhi, July 1 (ANI): The Australian Government is working quickly to implement a series of high-level initiatives to improve the security of international students in Australia.

Any death of a young student, however caused, is a tragedy and one death too many. Australia takes very seriously the safety of international students studying in Australia, a Australian High Commission press release said here on Wednesday.

Australia is a relatively safe country compared to most other nations. It has one of the lowest homicide rates in the world. The Australian Government is doing all it can to address the challenges faced by some international students.

The release said articles on this issue in today’s Australian newspapers did not contain accurate statistics about crime related deaths of international students in Australia.

It also said information from the National Coroners Information System has not been released as the coroners are not satisfied that there is accurate data relating to international students.

The articles referred to information presented to the Australian Parliament in February which simply reflected the Department of Immigration and Citizenship (DIAC) records of deaths for whatever reason (be it accident, illness, or other).

As DIAC is reliant on others providing advice when a death has occurred, DIAC records should not be used as a basis for determining the number of deaths or the cause of death of international students.

Australia remains safe for international students

Even if the newspapers’ figure of 54 deaths of international students in Australia over a year is used, this would represent a death rate of approximately 0.15 per 1,000 population, which is significantly less than death rates for the general Australian population of student age. For example, the death rate for persons aged 20-24 is 0.5 per 1,000 population.

Australia is a socially cohesive nation because of our ability to welcome people from different backgrounds and respect their traditions, their choices of faith and their lifestyles.

The Australian Government is committed to ensuring that people settling in Australia, temporarily to study or work, or permanently to live, have support and assistance to become fully functioning members of the Australian community, the release concluded. (ANI)

Oz Immigration Minister meets Indian students

Melbourne, June 19 (ANI): Australia’s Minister for Immigration and Citizenship, Chris Evans, today met representatives from the Indian community in Melbourne to listen directly to their views on the racial attacks involving Indian students.

The Minister reassured the Indian community that the Australian Government welcomes students from India and values their decision in coming to Australia to further their studies.

Australia is a tolerant, multicultural society that prides itself on its diversity and the Rudd Government takes very seriously Australia’s reputation as a safe destination for international students seeking high quality education, Evans said.

Nearly 500,000 international students were enrolled in Australian institutions last year, including more than 90,000 students from India.

“All Australians have been shocked and appalled by reports of violence against international students. Such attacks will not be tolerated and the Rudd Government has joined community leaders in condemning these crimes,” the minister said.

Evans reassured the community representatives that the reporting of incidents to police would not impact on the visa status of international students.

Australian Prime Minister has established a Taskforce on Crimes Against International Students under the leadership of the National Security Adviser to coordinate action across all levels of government.

Steps have already been taken to increase protection for the student community including increased police operations and public safety information sessions. (ANI)

Romanian leader to boycott Moldova conference next month

Romanian leader to boycott Moldova conference next monthBucharest – In a protest move, Romanian President Traian Basescu Wednesday said he would boycott a conference next month in neighbouring Moldova because of political developments there after elections-related unrest in April.

Basescu was to have attended a south-east European conference in the Moldovan capital Chisinau on June 5.

“Because of the events in the post election period in the Republic of Moldova (the trip) would no longer be realized,” the president’s representatives declared Wednesday evening in Bucharest.

The move is likely to worsen relations between the neighbouring countries. Moldova’s President Vladimir Voronin has blamed Romania for provoking unrest in his country, and continued his sharp criticism of Basescu.

Romanians may no longer travel without a visa to Moldova, and the documents are now hard to come by. About 60 per cent of Moldovans are ethnic Romanians.

Last month, tensions mounted after Basescu suggested that Bucharest should offer citizenship to 1 million Moldovans. Senior Romanian officials including Basescu sided publicly with Moldova’s opposition in an electoral dispute, accusing Moldova’s ruling Communist Party of fixing the results of a national vote April 5 to select a new parliament.

The June 5 conference is to include 11 countries which belong to the South East European Cooperation Process initiative founded in 1996. In addition to Romania and Moldova, the group includes Serbia, Montenegro, Macedonia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Croatia, Albania, Bulgaria, Greece and Turkey.(dpa)
