Times Square plot: 11th suspect held in Pakistan

Islamabad, May 27 (IANS) Pakistani officials have detained an 11th person in connection with the botched attempt of bombing New York’s Times Square early this month, CNN reported quoting a Pakistani intelligence source.

The man, identified as Qamar Ejaz, is the brother of Adnan Ejaz, a former major in Pakistani army who is already in custody for having alleged links with Faisal Shahzad, the prime suspect in the plot, said the intelligence source, who requested anonymity.

However, it was unclear how Ejaz is linked to Faisal Shahzad or the Times Square bombing plot.

Shahzad, a naturalised US citizen of Pakistani origin, was arrested at John F. Kennedy International Airport while trying to board a flight to Dubai May 3, two days after he planted an explosive-laden vehicle in Manhattan’s Times Square. The bomb failed to detonate.

Pakistani woman allowed to marry prisoner on death row

Lahore, May 13 (IANS) The High Court in Pakistan’s eastern city of Lahore has allowed a woman to marry a prisoner, who has been awarded death sentence but challenged his conviction in the Supreme Court.

Laiba Sehar had moved the court seeking permission to marry her fiance Atiq-ur-Rahman, who was sentenced to death in a case of kidnapping for ransom in 2002.

The High Court Wednesday asked the jail authorities to make arrangements for the wedding and said that the ceremony must be held in the office of the prison chief, Xinhua reported.

Laiba Sehar in her application had complained that her request for the marriage with her 28-year-old fiance was turned down by the prison officials.

Jail authorities told the court that there is no section in prison regulations to allow a prisoner to get married.

Syed Mazhar Hussain, the applicant’s lawyer, argued that marriage is a fundamental right of everyone and no citizen could be deprived of the right.

He informed the court that the convict has moved the Supreme Court against his conviction and his application was pending in the apex court.

Earlier this week, government of southern Sindh province allowed wives of prisoners to stay overnight with their spouses in jails once in a month.

Dalai Lama included in 2011 census

Dharamsala (Himachal Pradesh), May 8 (ANI): Tibetan spiritual leader, the Dalai Lama, endorsed his relevant details in the form for the 2011 census.

His inclusion in the census has paved the way for bona fide Tibetan refugees residing in India to be reckoned in the census.

“We visited Dalai Lama and he signed the census form with great happiness. He said that he is staying here for the last 50 years and is very happy to be included in the 2011 census count of India,” said B R Chauhan, Census Officer.

“He also assured that all Tibetans in-exile would include their names in the census so that they can get their ensuing UID (Unique ID Card) that is at par with any authentic document of an individual,” he added.

The Dalai Lama expressed his delight at the inclusion of Tibetans-in exile in the 2011 census of India, asserting that he himself has been residing here for the past five decades.

The Tibetan population in-exile is being counted in the census of India 2011 for the first time.

The census of 2011 is regarded as the gateway for every citizen to obtain the proposed Unique ID card that the Central Government has proposed to launch. (ANI)

US lawmakers say easier to kill terror suspects if their citizenship is stripped

Washington, May 7 (ANI): American lawmakers have said that it would be easier to kill terror suspects if their US citizenship is stripped off them.

“I suspect it would be easier to launch a Hellfire missile at a non-citizen than a citizen,” said Rep. Charlie Dent of Pennsylvania.

He rolled out a proposal with Sen. Joe Lieberman (I-Conn.) and others giving the State Department power to yank the citizenship of Yanks who join up with Al Qaeda or similar groups.

State can already take that step against turncoats serving hostile foreign regimes under a 1940s law aimed at traitors who helped the Nazis or Japanese.

Lieberman said the arrest of Times Square plotter Faisal Shahzad shows the need for an Al Qaeda-era upgrade.

Critics said the courts would block such a move. However, Senator Chuck Schumer of New York said the laws needed to be looked at.

“It is extremely important to get as much information as possible from suspected terrorists, and get it quickly, but we must do it in a way that is both constitutional and effective,” he said. (ANI)

Video emerges of Times Square suspect buying fireworks

Washington, May 7 (DPA) A video has been aired in the US showing the suspect in the attempted bombing of New York’s Times Square purchasing fireworks.

Broadcaster CNN aired the footage Thursday captured by cameras in a Phantom Fireworks store in Matamoras, Pennsylvania, which is said to show Faisal Shahzad purchasing M-88 firecrackers.

M-88s were a component in the bomb placed in a black sport-utility vehicle and parked Saturday in the heart of New York. The bomb never detonated, and a street vendor alerted police to the suspicious vehicle.

Shahzad, a 30-year-old naturalized US citizen from Pakistan, was arrested Monday while trying to flee the country at John F Kennedy International Airport.

Shahzad faces charges that include attempting to carry out a terrorist attack.

Shahzad’s links to Pak terrorists will bring bad name to country, admits ‘worried’ Malik

London, May 6 (ANI): Admitting that Faisal Shahzad’s statement that he received bomb-making training in Pakistan’s semi-autonomous tribal region of Wazirstan would a bring a bad name to the country, Interior Minister Rehman Malik has said he is worried about he repercussions of the failed New York bombing plot.

Describing the incident as ‘unfortunate’, Malik said the terror plot was part of a campaign being run against Pakistan by the extremists.

“This unfortunate incident, having been done under the name (of Pakistan) or by a Pakistani will definitely bring a bad name to Pakistan, for which we are worried,” BBC quoted Malik, as saying.

Malik, however, said that since Shahzad was a naturalised US citizen, it was the responsibility of America to investigate the case.

Earlier, Malik had said that Islamabad is yet to receive any formal request from Washington to probe the case.

He termed the bombing plot as a ‘conspiracy against Pakistan’, but added that the government would take stern action against all those involved in the terror plot.

“Pakistan would extend its full support to the US authorities in probing the matter. No one would be allowed to use Pakistan’s territory for any act of terrorism,” he added. (ANI)

Yemen Launches Airstrike on Al Qaeda Hideout

Yemen’s embassy in Washington says its nation’s air force launched an airstrike on an Al Qaeda hideout ahead of a likely terror attack, killing two senior members.

“Our air force carried out a raid on terrorist elements who were planning attacks on vital installations (and) two Al Qaeda leaders were killed,” said a statement on the defense ministry’s website.

It did not specify what installations were being targeted, but said that the air strike happened in Moudia region – around 300 miles southeast of Sanaa – which is close to the oil-rich province of Shabwa.

The airstrike was carried out Sunday in Yemen’s Abyan province. Yemen’s ministry of defense, in a statement released by the embassy, said the Al Qaeda group was planning “an imminent attack on a strategic installation” in retaliation for stepped-up counterterrorism efforts.

Working with U.S. intelligence officials, Yemen has recently boosted its counterterrorism efforts. Last week it announced the arrest of a U.S. citizen accused of being part of Yemen’s al-Qaida branch.

The Al Qaeda division in Yemen has been linked to the failed bombing attempt on a Detroit-bound airliner on Christmas Day. It has also been the subject of increased concern by U.S. counterterrorism officials.

Malaysian spiritual seeker who ‘went through bad karma in India’ leaves for home

New Delhi, Sep. 11 (ANI): A Malaysian spiritual seeker, who landed in a Varanasi jail for violating Indian immigration laws, has finally left for home in Johor.

After being released from jail on August 27, Lim Soon Seng was waiting to obtain his exit certificate from the Foreigners Regional Registration Office in Delhi to leave India.

“I was shattered in prison. All I wanted to do was to heal and help people but I went through some bad karma in India. There were so many legal complications.

“It placed so much stress on my family and me. Now I am free and happy to go home and see my sister,” The Star Online quoted Lim as saying before his departure on a Malaysia Airlines flight for Kuala Lumpur.

A follower of the Krishna Consciousness movement, Lim of Johor landed on the ghats of Varanasi in 2001. For the next six years he diligently renewed his visa as he wandered in orange robes with sadhus and lived a life of solitude.

But Lim’s spiritual sojourn turned into a nightmare when his passport expired in 2005 and he failed to renew it.

For the next 20 months, Lim, in his 50s, languished in Varanasi jail, one of the most crowded and dreaded Indian jails where notorious criminals are held.

Lim was charged under Section 14 of the Foreigners Act, where offenders can face a jail sentence of between six months and seven years.

A German diplomat, who visited the jail to meet a fellow citizen, came across Lim and notified the Malaysian High Commission in Delhi about his predicament.

Once the embassy assured the local district magistrate that he would be repatriated to Malaysia safely, Lim was released. (ANI)

Kathmandu, Sept 4 (ANI): Nepal’s former Crown Prince Paras Shah has refuted the Indian media reports that suggest that he is involved in a Fake Indian Currency Note (FICN) racket.

Jon’s family expresses dismay over verdict, say he has been victimised

New York, Sep.1 (ANI): The family of Indian-born fashion designer Anand Jon has reacted with dismay to the 59-year sentence handed over to him by a US court for sexually assaulting aspiring models. They claimed that Jon has been “victimised” and that facts have been overlooked in the case.

The designer’s mother Shashi Jon said, “He is not capable of doing anything like this. This was beyond my belief that Anand has been taken in and arrested on charges of molestation”.

Defending 35-year-old Anand, his sister Sanjana said, “The fact that Anand is an Indian citizen and that he is being victimised is completely overlooked. So there is nobody questioning anything that we are facing there”.

“Every piece of evidence that is medical shows that nothing ever happened. There is no medical evidence that showed that anything ever happened,” she told TV channels.

Their family’s lawyer Majid Memon said, “It is very sad that this young boy, a celebrity from India, has to be left like this and being now convicted and sentenced to suffer for the whole of his life.”

Times Now quoted Memon as saying that all the girls alleging rape or molestation don’t have a “scratch on their body to suggest that there was any resistance or any violence by the accused.

Moreover, the complaints have been lodged weeks and even months after the incidents. So definitely this is a very dubious kind of a charge and unfortunately Anand was left alone and there was hardly any help.

Jon’s mother and sister will now move for an appeal,” Memon said.

Los Angeles Superior Court Judge David Wesley today announced that Jon must serve 14 years in state prison-before he begins to serve a 45-year-to-life sentence.

The designer has been featured on the television show “America’s Next Top Model” and worked with such celebrities as Paris Hilton and Mary J Blige. (ANI)

Chinese govt. office “too busy to fuss with” public

“This is such a disgrace for officials in China,” wrote another netizen.

The Yingcheng government’s reply came after a local resident named “Freezing Smile” suggested that local officials should visit a deserted landscaping site left uncared for along a pedestrian street in the city.

It was posted to the Letters to the Mayor section on the official government website.

“Will the Party and local residents be satisfied with such an inactive government institution like our landscape office?” the post said.
