Yeast owes its brewing capacity to chromosome duplication

Washington, May 15 (ANI): Yeast cells’ ability to convert sugar to alcohol, the key process in the production of beer and wine, can be attributed to a remarkable evolutionary process— called chromosome duplication.

The genes that allow yeast to digest sugars in fruits and grains have been duplicated several times over the course of time – allowing for optimal conversion of different types of sugars (such as sucrose and maltose) into alcohol.

The duplications arose because the genes for sugar processing are situated close to the unstable margin of the chromosome.

The phenomenon appears not to be limited to alcohol production in yeast, but it forms an important principle in the evolution of living organisms.

The results are presented in a study by Kevin Verstrepen from K.U.Leuven and VIB, a life sciences institute in Flanders, Belgium, Andrew Murray from Harvard University, and Chris Brown, a joint student of Verstrepen and Murray.

Recent research, amongst others by VIB-scientists, showed that the duplication of existing genes can play a crucial role.

One copy can retain the original function of the gene while the new copy may develop a new function. This can sometimes be very different from the original gene.

In the new study, Chris Brown, a PhD student in Verstrepen´s lab, shows that some genes that are closely located in the ends of the chromosomes, are duplicated more often.

The ends of chromosomes, called subtelomeres, seem to function as evolutionary laboratories of our cells.

New genes are continuously developed and tested in these “gene nurseries”.

It appears that duplication at the subtelomeres already occurred in the ancestor of our industrial beer and wine yeasts- Modern strains of beer yeast contain five to ten copies of a prehistoric gene that allows for some sugars to be digested.

Each of these modern copies ensures that yeast can digest a particular sugar, and this is much faster than the prehistoric yeast.

The massive duplications occurred probably around the Cretaceous era (66 to 145 million years ago).

It was no coincidence that this involved the same period in which sweet fruits and grains developed.

The duplication of the genes and the further evolution thereof, allowed yeast cells to digest the different sugars in the fruits.

Thus, the subtelomeric “gene copying laboratory” ensured that yeasts were able to conquer a new niche.

Interestingly, it seems likely that similar subtelomeric gene duplication also stimulates evolution and adaptation in higher organisms, including humans.

The study has been published in the prominent journal Current Biology. (ANI)

Chris Brown ”making progress” on probation

London, May 08 (ANI): US singer Chris Brown, who assaulted ex-girlfriend Rihanna last year, has made further progress while on probation, a judge in Los Angeles has heard.

Brown has completed his 300 minutes of community service – roughly a fifth of the amount he is required to perform said his attorney, reports the BBC news.

He had also attended all but one of 52 mandatory domestic violence counselling sessions, said lawyer Mark Geragos.

Brown, 21, is due back in court on 26 August for another status hearing. He was sentenced to five years of probation last August and also six months of community labour after he was found guilty of assaulting Rihanna in their car on the eve of the 2009 Grammy Awards.

He later apologised saying that was “very sad and very ashamed” of his actions.

Patricia Schnegg the Superior Court Judge said on Thursday ‘it appeared the singer was making progress and requested a formal probation report.’ (ANI)

Brown pleaded guilty to a felony and was sentenced last August to community service along with a year of domestic-violence counselling for his attack on the “Umbrella” singer.

Olubunmi Sonubi, a mother of Sisulu-Walker fifth-grader Ishola, said she was okay with a “second chance” for Brown.

“He can come even though he was arrested,” she said.

“He’s coming to read to the children. He apologized on TV. Sometimes in real life we make mistakes,” she added. (ANI)

Winfrey comes out in defense of her decision to not support Brown

Washington, Sept 10 (ANI): Talk show queen Oprah Winfrey has come out in defense of her decision to not to support Chris Brown, after the star slammed the TV titan for siding with ex-girlfriend Rihanna following the bust-up.

After Brown’s beating of Rihanna in February (09), Winfrey dedicated an episode of her hit daytime talkshow to the topic of domestic abuse and also advised the ‘Umbrella’ singer against the Brown.

However, Brown hit out at Winfrey insisting he had helped the media mogul out in the past.

He said, “I commend Oprah on being like, ‘This (abuse) is a problem’, but it was a slap in my face. I did a lot of stuff for her, like going to Africa and performing for her school. She could have been more helpful, like, ‘OK, I’m going to help both of these people out.’”

In an interview to Access Hollywood, Winfrey backed up her decision not to defend Brown, insisting that although she was grateful for his help during the opening of her African girls school, she does not condone domestic violence in any way.

“So this is what happened; Chris Brown did my show several years ago, I think it was 2007. Fun, fun time and afterward he said, ‘If there’s anything ever I can do for you then let me know.’ I almost never take anybody up on that… But my girls at the Academy in Africa love Chris Brown, love, love, love, love, love Chris Brown,” Contactmusic quoted her as saying. Clumsily translated signs abroad like ‘Women are diseases’ leave Brits confused!

London, Sep 10 (ANI): A survey has revealed that Brits holidaying abroad are often confused with clumsily translated signs about women being diseases, people being ordered to play with the opposite sex in public or told to take advantage of the chambermaid.

There were even signs at an airline ticket office in Copenhagen, which told visitors that the airline will take their bags and send them in all directions.

British tourists arriving at a hotel in Budapest to find a sign saying that the lift was being fixed for the day and during that time the management regretfully informed visitors that their stay would be unbearable.

A Zurich hotel lobby had a sign stating that because of the impropriety of entertaining guests of the opposite sex in the bedroom, it is suggested that the lobby be used for this purpose.

In Yugoslavia, the flattening of underwear with pleasure is the job of the chambermaid and in Japan visitors are invited to take advantage of the staff.

Launderettes’ windows in Rome, promises that if women leave their clothes they can spend the whole afternoon having a good time, a similar sign in Bangkok asked men to drop their trousers for the best results.

In Tokyo, ladies with nuts are served special cocktails, and in Norway ladies are requested not to have children at the bar, and if their children are left unattended, they will be sold to the circus.

Austria has a sign stating, children left unattended will be sold as slaves.

“English speakers are among the most heavily travelled people in the world and so it’s no wonder touristy places try to appeal to them by translating signs and menus,” the Telegraph quoted Chris Brown, managing director of sunshine.co.uk, the online travel agent who compiled the translations, as saying.

“However, the problems come when these translations are completely inaccurate.

“The above examples are just a bit of fun and aren’t likely to offend anyone, other than chambermaids, but when menu translations wind up saying ‘delicious roasted hepatitis’, companies are bound to lose lots of business!” he added. (ANI)

Jermaine Jackson backtracks on Chris Brown tribute announcement

London, September 10 (ANI): Jermaine Jackson has climbed down from his announcement that Chris Brown would form a part of the forthcoming concert in honour of his late brother Michael.

The former ‘Jackson 5′ member previously revealed Brown would be among a host of other artists to perform at the tribute set to take place in front of Vienna’s former imperial Schoenbrunn Palace on September 26.

But representatives for Brown, who is presently on probation for assaulting ex-girlfriend Rihanna earlier this year, subsequently denied the story, reports the Daily Express.

And now, Jackson has backtracked on his earlier announcement, saying he was only inviting the shamed singer to perform.

The 54-year-old said in a second press conference in London that he was not announcing headline acts but would like to see Brown be part of the show if he is allowed out of the U.S.

He said: “It’s up to the judge if he gets let out of the country or not. I’m not worried at all. He wants to be here. It’s just up to what he’s going through with his court case right now.

“He’s asked for forgiveness. If Christ can forgive him, so can we. People make mistakes, but he’s a wonderful performer.” (ANI)

Rihanna wants ‘stay away’ ban lifted off Chris Brown

He also must stay 100 yards from her, unless they are both at an entertainment-related event, in which he must stay 10 yards away.

But sources have revealed that Rihanna has been working to get Brown’s restraining order lifted.

“When Rihanna got word from her attorney that the judge refused to lift the ban, she was really upset,” News.com.au quoted an insider as having told Britain’s Now magazine.

“She started calling her friends and saying how stupid it was and that Chris would never hurt her again. She was really indignant about it,” the source added. (ANI)

Chris Brown to wash cars, pick up trash as assault punishment

Washington, Sept 4 (ANI): R and B singer Chris Brown will be washing cars, picking up trash and removing graffiti as a part of the community service ordered by court for assaulting Rihanna.

The 20-year-old star has been given five years probation and ordered to serve six months hard labour in his home state of Virginia after pleading guilty to assaulting the ‘Umbrella’ hitmaker in February (09), reports Contactmusic.

Brown’s punishment has been revealed in a letter from Richmond, Virginia Police chief Bryan Norwood to the court in Los Angeles where Brown was sentenced.

The letter reads, “It is my understanding that the Court desires the imposed community service to be labour intensive. Along those lines, we are prepared to put Mr Brown to work in the community performing manual labour tasks, such as graffiti removal, trash pick up, washing cars, cleaning, maintaining grounds, etc.”

Brown has also been asked to pick up the bill for extra security during his punishment in case members of the public find out his location.

The letter adds, “He will be responsible for paying any costs incurred regarding the facilitation of this arrangement to include adequate security from the public (in the event they become aware of his presence) and one-on-one supervision where special projects are instituted.” (ANI)

He added he was “definitely” still in love with the pop sensation.

Court ordered Brown to stay away from Rihanna for the duration of his five-year probation period after he pleaded guilty of assaulting her, after a pre-Grammy Awards party in Los Angeles on 8 February. (ANI)

Ashamed Chris Brown clearly remembers the night he assaulted Rihanna

Washington, September 1 (ANI): Singer Chris Brown has said that reports on the net claiming he has forgotten what happened the night he assaulted his ex-girlfriend/singer Rihanna are false.

The Kiss Kiss hitmaker has called reports based on a clip of an interview with Larry King misleading.

“There have been reports on the Internet that I didn’t remember what happened that night with Rihanna. I want to try and set things straight,” People magazine quoted him as saying.

He said: “That 30 seconds of the interview they used of me was taken from a one hour interview during which that same question was asked something like four or five times – and when you look at the entire interview you will see it is not representative of what I said.

“The first four times – or however many times it was – I gave the same answer – which was that I didn’t think it was appropriate for me to talk about what happened that night. I said it was not right for me and it really wasn’t fair to Rihanna. The fifth time or whatever it was – I just misspoke. I was asked, ‘Do you remember doing it?’ and I said, ‘No.’

“Of course I remember what happened. Several times during the interview, my mother said that I came to her right afterwards and told her everything. But it was and still is a blur.

“And yes, I still can’t believe it happened because it is not me or who I am, nor is what happened like anything I have ever done before.

“As I have said several times previously, I am ashamed of and sorry for what happened that night and I wish I could relive that moment and change things, but I can’t. I take full responsibility for my actions.

“What I have to do now is to prove to the world that this was an isolated incident and that is not who I am, and I intend to do so by my behavior now and in the future.”

The gossip of the chart-topping pair kicked off after they were spotted together in New York, following Rihanna’s break up with Chris Brown.

But Drake says he’s only trying to get Rihanna to record a duet for his next album.

“We’re just really good friends. We have great conversations about music, and we’re trying to figure out the perfect song we can collaborate on for my album,” Contactmusic quoted him as telling the New York Post.

“I’ve only worked with one other female before (Mary J Blige). I hope that Rihanna is onboard, and I’m also looking to work with Sade,” he added. (ANI)

Chris Brown sentenced in Rihanna assault case

London, Aug 26 (ANI): Rihanna’s ex-boyfriend and singer Chris brown has been ordered 180 days’ community labour and five years’ probation for assaulting her.

The judge announced that the singer must do physical labour, not community service, apart from attending a 52-week domestic violence-counselling programme.

He has also been fined 2500 dollars and has been asked to maintain a physical distance of 100 yards from Rihanna for five years.

The judge has warned that the violation of the terms would be taken “very, very seriously,” the BBC reports.

The 20-year-old R and B star had pleaded guilty for the crime in June this year.

However, sentencing had been delayed from 5 August as a response was still awaited from officials in Virginia as to whether Brown could serve his community labour in that state.

He has to now reappear in court on 19 November for a progress report.

The incident had taken place before the Grammy awards in Los Angeles this February, when the pair got into an argument after Rihanna found a text message from another woman in Brown’s phone.

According to court documents, he tried to oust the Umbrella hitmaker from their rented Lamborghini sports car, and shoved her head against the passenger window and punched her in the face many times. (ANI)

Chris Brown hooks up with Kanye West’s on-off girlfriend Amber Rose

New York, Jul 6 (ANI): R ‘n’ B singer Chris Brown was reportedly spotted making out with American rapper Kanye West’s on-and-off girlfriend Amber Rose recently.

Both Brown, 20, and Rose, 26, locked lips at the July 4 White Party thrown by Sean (Diddy) Combs and Ashton Kutcher in Beverly Hills.

And even though Brown arrived at the party with singer Teyana Taylor, an 18-year-old Rihanna look-alike, he quickly hooked up with Rose.

“Diddy announced the deejay would do a tribute to Michael Jackson,” the New York Daily News quoted a guest as saying.

“Chris did an amazing impression of Michael’s moonwalk. It wasn’t long before he was dancing with Amber,” the guest said.

Later, as the party wound down, the pair nestled on a couch in the backyard of the Beverly Hills mansion.

“They were holding hands and making out in the shadows,” a witness said.

“She had her hand on his leg,” the witness revealed.

Taylor is said to have been irked by the amount of time Brown spent with Rose, but still accompanied him to an after-party at the club Guys, where he again ditched her.

“They were kissing on the dance floor in front of Teyana,” another witness said.

“But he and Amber left separately,” the witness added.

There were no comments from either of their representatives. (ANI)

Jay-Z nixes Chris Brown’s plans to perform at BET Awards

New York, July 1 (ANI): Jay-Z thrashed Chris Brown’s hopes of returning on stage at the BET Awards, in a bid to pay tribute to late King of Pop Michael Jackson.

Brown has been low-key since beating up his ex-girlfriend (and Jay-Z’s artist), Rihanna, earlier this year.

Apparently, Brown was supposed to participate in the Jacko tribute at LA’s Shrine Auditorium, but Jay-Z pulled the plug on the plans.

“Jay-Z wasn’t having it. He threatened to pull out of the show if Chris was involved, so BET dropped Chris,” the New York Post quoted a source as saying.

A representative for Brown said: “That’s not true-he was never confirmed to perform.”

Brown was close to Jackson and performed ‘Thriller’ at the World Music Awards in 2006. (ANI)
