No merger with Congress in future: Chiranjeevi

New Delhi, May 29 (ANI): Telugu cine star and Praja Rajyam Party (PRP) President Chiranjeevi on Saturday ruled out any merger with the Congress party in the future.

“The Congress has asked PRP to withdraw from Rajya Sabha polls,” said Chiranjeevi after his meeting with Congress President Sonia Gandhi at 10, Janpath.

“The PRP has allied with Congress only for Rajya Sabha polls,” he added

The meeting gained significance after Congress MP and former Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Y. S. Rajshekhar Reddy’s son Y. S. Jaganmohan Reddy defied the party orders and decided to go ahead with his planned ‘Odarpu Yatra,’ which caused a lot of violence in the Telangana region.

The Praja Rajyam Party, which has 18 MLAs in the 295-member Andhra Pradesh Assembly, is keen on contesting the upcoming Rajya Sabha elections.

The actor-turned politician was asked by the Congress High Command to come here for discussions to reach an understanding on the biennial Rajya Sabha polls, after he announced that his party would contest the election. (ANI)

Editors Guild condemns attack on Andhra Jyothi

New Delhi, Mar 24 (ANI): The Editors Guild of India on Wednesday condemned the attack on Telugu news channel ABN Andhra Jyothi, allegedly by members of Prajarajyam Party (PRP) led by cine star Chiranjeevi.

In a statement issued here, the Guild also demanded to bring the culprits to justice.

“The Editors Guild of India strongly condemns this attack and hopes that the police will ensure the culprits are brought to book,” the statement said.

On Monday, angered over a news story telecast by the news channel on Chiranjeevi, the PRP activists attacked the channel’s head office in Hyderabad’s Jubilee Hills area.

The Guild has also noted with dismay the attack on the news channel.

“Such attacks on news channels are deplorable and cannot be justified in any way,” the statement said.

The Guild also urged all political parties to stay away from attacking journalists and media houses.

“Political parties in Andhra Pradesh and across the country must stay away from attacking journalists and their offices,” the Guild said.

In the statement the Guild expressed concern over increasing attacks on news channels and newspapers across the country.

“In recent months, there have been several attacks on newspaper and channel offices across the country, each attack raising serious questions for our democracy,” the statement said.

“In a civil society, disagreements must be conveyed through peaceful, democratic means,” the statement added. (ANI)

Much to the disappointment of curious and byte crazy media army, posted outside the venue, not even a single peep into the ceremony was allowed by the Mirza family, which termed it a “family oriented” event.

The engagement of the Indian tennis’ poster girl also put to rest all the speculation about her romantic links with sport stars and bollywood actors.

The 22-year-old Hyderbadi has been linked with Pakistani tennis player Aisam-ul-Haq Qureshi and bollywood actor Shahid Kapur and also Telugu superstar Navdeep in the recent past.

With two cupid-struck youth creating nuisance outside Sania’s Banjara Hills residence in the last two days, the city police had made tight security arrangements to ward off any trouble at the function.

Naidu blames Chiranjeevi for TDP’s poll debacle

Hyderabad, May 27 (IANS) Telugu Desam Party (TDP) president N. Chandrababu Naidu Wednesday blamed superstar Chiranjeevi’s entry into the political arena for his party’s debacle in the simultaneous polls to the Andhra Pradesh assembly and Lok Sabha.

Naidu also refused to accept the verdict as a positive vote for the Congress party saying it retained power by division of votes.

“It was clear from the voting trend in assembly elections that people wanted TDP to come to power,” he said while addressing Mahanadu, or the state-level convocation of his party.

The former chief minister said the entry of Chiranjeevi’s Praja Rajyam Party and bureaucrat-turn-politician Jayaprakash Narayan’s Lok Satta into the electoral field worked against TDP as these parties split the anti-incumbency vote.

TDP could win 92 seats in the 294-member assembly while it bagged only six of the 42 Lok Sabha seats in the state.

This is the first time in TDP’s 26-year history that it is sitting in the opposition for the second consecutive term.

In his inaugural address at the two-day conclave, Naidu reminded that though the Congress had come to power in the state again, its vote percentage was only 36.8.

“This is the first time in the history of Andhra Pradesh that a party has come to power with such a meagre share of votes,” he said.

The opposition parties together polled 63.2 percent of votes and the difference in percentage of votes between the Congress and the Grand Alliance comprising TDP, Telangana Rashtra Samiti and the two Left parties was only 1.8 percent.

“In many constituencies, the TDP candidates lost the polls with a narrow margin, mainly because of the presence of the PRP and the Lok Satta. Had there not been a split in the anti-establishment vote, we would have won comfortably,” he reasoned.

Refusing to see the verdict as a positive vote for the Congress, Naidu argued the ruling party, which bagged 33 Lok Sabha seats, should have won 230 assembly seats, if it were to be a positive vote.

“The Congress has come back to power by default, by polling 1.8 percent more than the opposition alliance,” he asserted.

He declared that the TDP would continue its fight on people’s issues and asked the cadre to strengthen the party at the grassroots level.

Voicing concern over the suicide attempt by two party workers over the party’s defeat, he asked the cadre not to get disheartened by the result and reminded them that no other party in the country has a strong cadre base like the TDP.

Naidu also clarified that the TDP would stick to its stand in favour of separate statehood to Telangana region.

Dumping its traditional stand against bifurcation of Andhra Pradesh, TDP had last year backed the demand for statehood to Telangana.

The TDP chief said it would also implement a cash transfer scheme whenever it comes to power in the state. Under the scheme, the party had promised cash doles of Rs.1,000 to Rs.2,000 per month to each poor family.

Congress should support Pawar as next PM: Sangma

Guwahati, May 15 (ANI): Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) leader and former Lok Sabha Speaker Purno Agitok Sangma on Friday reiterated that the Congress should support Sharad Pawar as the next Prime Minister.

“We should make all efforts to form non-Congress, non-BJP government headed by Sharad Pawar. We already have support of Jayalalithaa (AIADMK), Navin Patnaik (BJD), Chiranjeevi (Praja Rajyam), Manohar Joshi (Shiv Sena) and Amar Singh (Samajwadi Party). The Congress should also gracefully support the candidature of Sharad Pawar as next Prime Minister,” Sangma told reporters here.

Meanwhile, Senior NCP leader and Union Minister Praful Patel said that Sharad Pawar is not the only choice for the Prime Minister’s post.

“The NCP has at no point stated that Sharad Pawar will be the only choice for the PM. The NCP has always on the contrary stated that we do not have the requisite numbers. The numbers are with the largest party and in this case it is Congress,” Praful Patel told reporters in the national capital. (ANI)

‘Lotus will not be allowed to bloom,’ says Paswan

New Delhi, May 15 (ANI): The “lotus will not be allowed to bloom” at the Centre at any cost, said Lok Janshakti Party (LJP) chief Ram Vilas Paswan.

“We will not support BJP at any cost to form a government and will make all efforts to ensure that a secular government is formed,” he told reporters on Friday.

Paswan also confirmed that he had had meetings with Janata Dal (United) (JD-U) chief Sharad Yadav and Rashtriya Lok Dal (RLD) president Ajit Singh.

LJP secretary general Abdul Khaliq dismissed any possibility of his party switching over to the NDA and downplayed the issue of NDA leaders calling up Paswan.

When asked whether he was still with the UPA, Paswan said: “I am in UPA and also a Minister in the government.” Asked if he would remain in UPA, he said there were two possibilities that could emerge.

“If UPA can get majority, there will be no problem. The other scenario is the UPA does not get majority. In that situation, we three parties in the Fourth Front would jointly take a decision on the methodology of forming a secular government.”

Asked whether the results would have been better if the UPA allies had fought the polls jointly in Uttar Pradesh and Bihar, Paswan said: “We wished all fought unitedly. But Congress preferred to contest the elections alone in the two states. But even then, our results will be good.”

“At this stage we want to clarify that LJP, RJD and SP will take decision as a bloc and not as individual parties. SP is not a part of UPA till now. But it will play and important role in forming the next government,” he said.

Regarding the relationship with the Left parties, Paswan said it was not bad, but cordial.

Meanwhile, in Lucknow, the Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) has rubbished reports of talking to or joining the BJP-led NDA or the UPA-led by the Congress.

The BSP said no secret meeting had taken place between party chief Mayawati and BJP’s prime ministerial candidate LK Advani.

The BSP’s support is being considered crucial to both the BJP and the Congress.

Party insiders say that Mayawati would prefer “not to support a BJP (Bharatiya Janata Party)-led government that would antagonise Muslim voters.”

The BSP is tipped to get around 30 seats.

In Andhra Pradesh, Telugu superstar Chiranjeevi’s Praja Rajyam Party (PRP) on Friday said it is keeping its doors open for post-poll alliances.

“Any political party has to act in such a way that it should never close any doors post-elections. PRP is also doing the same thing,” PRP general secretary Allu Aravind told reporters here when asked whether it will align with Congress.

Arvind also took a dig at the Third Front and said it was a “fractured front at present as one of its members has packed and taken his baggage out of it” in a apparent reference to the TRS, which switched sides to NDA recently.

There is intense speculation that Congress is trying to reach out to Chiranjeevi to get his support both at the state and the Centre. (ANI)

Hyderabad, May 14 (ANI): In a bid to register their support for superstar-turned-politician Chiranjeevi, youth in Hyderabad donated blood at Chiranjeevi Eye and Blood Bank on Thursday.

“We want to become independent. We want to establish his Praja Rajyam Party (PRP). Once we win 148 seats, it would be easy to do so. That’s why 148 members came here to give blood and pray to the esteemed god-’Please give him power’,” said Rayudu, a blood donor.

Elated with the success of the blood donation camp, Praja Rajyam party leaders expressed confidence to do well in the assembly elections as well.

“This (blood donation camp) is for the success of the PRP in elections. The vote-count for the 543 Lok Sabha seats is scheduled on May 16. (ANI)

CPM sees red over US envoy’s meeting with Indian leaders

New Delhi, May 14 (ANI): Communist Party of India- Marxist (CPM) on Thursday lashed out at US Charge d’Affaires A. Peter Burleigh for what it termed an interference in Indian elections.

“US is welcome to find out what is happening on the political situation but cannot interfere in the internal political matters of the country,” CPM Politburo member and parliamentary group leader, Sitaram Yechury, told reporters here.

Burleigh, who took over as the chef de mission in New Delhi over a month ago, met the BJP’s prime ministerial candidate Lal Krishna Advani on Wednesday. The two are said to discussed bilateral ties and the regional situation in Pakistan as well as the future of the Indo-US civilian nuclear cooperation.

Burleigh also held talks with Praja Rajyam Party President Chiranjeevi and Chandrababu Naidu of the Telugu Desam Party. The meeting with Naidu triggered speculations that the US diplomat is trying to persuade Naidu not to back a Third Front Government.

Meanwhile, the U.S. embassy has denied allegations of interference in the Indian poll process.

“It was a very routine visit by the American diplomats. It was planned a long time in advance. Peter Burleigh asked for a meeting with the BJP’s prime ministerial candidate Lal Krishna Advani a month ago. The meeting is part of the consultations before Hillary Clinton’s visit to India. There is no effort to interfere in the elections in India. Nor is there an effort to involve America in Indian coalition politics,” a US Embassy spokesman said. (ANI)

Advani, who was unveiling the party’s ‘Vision Document’ on infrastructure development for the country, here on Tuesday, said that the NDA would emerge as the single largest grouping in Parliament.

“This alliance would be the largest alliance in the Parliament. Now what exactly would be the number I cannot predict, but I feel confident that we would be able to get the mandate of the people,” Advani said.

Meanwhile, in Tirupathi, Praja Rajyam Party chief Chiranjeevi staged a road show.

Chiarnjeevi’s party, which is making its political debut in Andhra Pradesh, is pitted against the coalition of the Telugu Desam Party and Telangana Rashtriya Samiti, Congress party.

Resignations shock Chiranjeevi, but says party will win

Hyderabad, April 10 (IANS) Spate of resignations by the leaders of the Praja Rajyam Party has shocked its president and matinee idol Chiranjeevi but he is still confident of coming to power in Andhra Pradesh.

The actor-turned-politician Friday addressed a news conference, a day after party general secretary and spokesman Prakala Prabhakar quit, making serious allegations against the top leadership.

‘Our party will welcome those who want to come and will give a send-off to those who want to leave,’ he said, reacting to the series of resignations by party cadres during the last few days.

‘Are you still in the party?’ he asked party spokesman Mitra in a lighter vein when the latter came to sit beside him.

‘Do you have any doubt?’ asked Mitra.

‘It is not known who and when will give the shock,’ remarked Chiranjeevi.

The remarks are significant as Mitra is also reportedly unhappy with the style of functioning of Chiranjeevi and his brother-in-law and party general Allu Aravind.

Chiranjeevi said internal differences were common for any party but felt that such sweeping allegations should not be made. ‘If they make such allegations, they will be the losers,’ he said while denying that the party had sold assembly and Lok Sabha tickets to the aspirants.

‘Let somebody tell me how many businessmen, contractors and industrialists were given tickets by our party,’ he said while pointing out that the party fielded 35.4 percent of candidates from the backward classes.

He claimed this was the highest number of backward castes candidates fielded by any party in India’s history.

Chiru, as he is popularly known, said the tickets were allotted to candidates after three surveys conducted by the party.

While Allu Aravind was emotional in his reaction to Prabhakar’s allegations, Chiru was calm and cool.

‘Praja Rajyam is a miracle tree, which gives something to everybody,’ he said on Prabhakar’s remark that the party has become a ‘poisonous tree’.

The megastar was confident that his party would come to power, claiming that it had people’s support.

He also announced that the party would launch ‘rail yatra’ from Secunderabad railway station Saturday. ‘The aim of this yatra is to take our election symbol (rail engine) to people,’ he said.

Jolt to Chiranjeevi as another leader quits

Hyderabad, April 9 (IANS) With just a week left for the elections in Andhra Pradesh, Chiranjeevi’s Praja Rajyam Party (PRP) Thursday suffered another major jolt with a key leader resigning and levelling allegations of corruption against the party.

Prakala Prabhakar, party spokesman and an intellectual face in the party, quit amid high drama. He handed over his resignation to the staff at the PRP office here and then launched a bitter attack on the leadership without naming anyone.

Alleging that the PRP was spreading poison, he termed the party a ‘company’ and said the allegations made by several others were true to a large extent.

‘There are certain undesirable elements in the party. They have cheated people. I don’t know why they did this,’ said Prabhakar, speaking from the party office.

The party hit back at Prabhakar.

Addressing a news conference here in the night, Chiranjeevi’s brother-in-law and PRP general secretary Allu Aravind alleged that Prabhakar made baseless allegations as he was an aspirant for the party ticket for the Narsapuram Lok Sabha seat but had no ‘roots among people’.

‘How dare he use the PRP office after his resignation and make such allegations against the party. He has no morals,’ said an emotional Aravind while denying allegations that the party sold tickets for this month’s assembly and Lok Sabha elections.

‘It was Prabhakar who spread poison in the guise of sweet talk,’ said Aravind while reacting to his branding PRP as a ‘poisonous tree’.

Aravind, an eminent film producer, threw a challenge at his critics to prove the allegation that he sold tickets. ‘We have given tickets to 104 candidates from backward classes. How many of them have the capacity to pay,’ said Aravind, who is contesting for the Lok Sabha from Ankapalli constituency.

Prabhakar’s exit is the second jolt to the party after last week’s resignation of C. Anjaneya Reddy, a former police officer, who was the party’s vice president.

Dozens of leaders have quit the PRP in the last two weeks to protest the manner in which nominations were given for the assembly and Lok Sabha polls.

Prabhakar, who was earlier with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and worked as an anchor for a TV channel, made a dramatic appearance at the PRP office with his supporters.

He handed over the one-line resignation and addressed a press conference from the same podium he had used as spokesman for media briefings.

‘I am a partner in their sin of raising hopes among people that the PRP will bring change. To wash off this sin, I am walking out,’ he said.

Chiranjeevi’s party promises to probe rivals’ graft

Hyderabad, April 6 (IANS) The Praja Rajyam Party (PRP) of actor-turned-politician Chiranjeevi Monday promised that if voted to power it would order judicial probe into all cases of corruption reported during the last 15 years of the Congress and Telugu Desam Party (TDP) rules.

The PRP’s election manifesto said the party will conduct a probe by a sitting judge of the high court into corruption in construction of irrigation projects by the Congress government.

The manifesto promised cooking gas cylinder and grocery items for Rs.200 a month for every poor family, distribution of land among poor and total prohibition in phases.

Releasing the manifesto here, Chiranjeevi said if voted to power the first file his party would sign would be for supply of grocery items for Rs.100 per month for every poor family. The party will also supply cooking gas cylinder for Rs.100.

The manifesto promised many populist schemes to counter the Telugu Desam Party’s free colour television and cash transfer scheme for poor and the schemes like Rs.2 a kg rice currently being implemented by the Congress government. The megastar said the grocery scheme would provide food security to the poor.

‘This manifesto has been prepared keeping in view the socio-economic conditions prevailing in the state and to achieve our party’s goal of social justice,’ he said.

The PRP promised to implement land reforms and allot two to five acres of land for landless poor. It also vowed to usher in ‘gram swaraj’ by transferring powers and finances to village level bodies.

Promising to continue the current scheme of free electricity to farmers, the manifesto said the duration would be increased from the present seven hours to 10 hours. It said it would provide social security to farmers by introducing pension scheme for them.

Under another populist scheme promised in the manifesto, the government would deposit Rs.100,000 in the name of every new-born girl child. She would be paid the amount on reaching the age of 18 years.

All women will get free education from kinder garden (KG) to post-graduation (PG) level. The women members of self-help DWACRA groups will be provided interest-free loans. Women will also be provided 50 percent reservations in appointment of teachers.

The PRP promised creation of half a million jobs in 1,000 days. It said it would also pay unemployment allowance of Rs.1,000 a month to every unemployed youth, and assured Rs.1,500 monthly pension to physically challenged.

The party said it would try to introduce total prohibition in phases and shut down all ‘belt shops’ (illegal counters of licensed liquor shops).

Rajagopal emerges as richest Andhra politician, worth Rs.2.99 bn

Hyderabad, April 6 (IANS) Who is the richest politician in Andhra Pradesh? It’s neither actor-turned-politician Chiranjeevi nor Chief Minister Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy’s son Y.S. Jaganmohan Reddy. With assets worth Rs.2.99 billion (Rs.299 crore), Congress MP Lagadapati Rajagopal has left everyone behind.

Chiranjeevi, who was so far considered the richest man in the fray for this month’s elections with assets of Rs.880 million (Rs.88 crore), has been defeated in the race for riches by industrialist Rajagopal, who is seeking another term from the Vijayawada Lok Sabha constituency.

Jaganmohan Reddy, who is making his debut in electoral politics by contesting the Kadapa Lok Sabha seat, is at third place with Rs.770 million (Rs.77 crore) although his father is one of poorest politicians with assets worth Rs.3.3 million.

While filing his nomination from Pulivendula assembly constituency in his native Kadapa district, YSR declared he does not have any house or apartment or vehicle in his name or that of his wife Vijyalakshmi.

Rajagopal, the former chairman of Lanco Group of Companies, and his wife L. Padma together own movable and immovable assets worth Rs.2.99 billion.

According to the affidavit he filed along with his nomination papers, he has movable assets of Rs.900 million (Rs.90 crore) and immovable assets of Rs.140 million (Rs.14 crore). He also has foreign assets of $36.14 million (Rs.1.8 billion).

Rajagopal’s wife has movable and immovable assets of Rs.141 million (Rs.14.1 crore).

The Congress leader also has bonds and shares worth Rs.828.2 million (Rs.82.82 crore) in various companies. His assets include houses and apartments in Hyderabad worth Rs.133.5 million (Rs 13.35 crore), seven vehicles worth Rs.35.6 million (Rs 3.56 crore), 7,220 gm gold worth Rs.17 million (Rs.1.70 crore), and agricultural land worth Rs.7.02 million (Rs.70.2 lakh). He owes of Rs.59.1 million (Rs.5.91 crore) to different banks.

YSR’s main rival and Telugu Desam party president N. Chandrababu Naidu and his wife N. Bhuvaneswari together own assets of Rs.687 million (Rs.68.70 crore). The assets in the name of Naidu are worth Rs.130 million (Rs.13 crore).

Naidu, who is seeking re-election from Kuppam assembly constituency in Chittoor district, declared that he owns one vehicle – an old ambassador car worth Rs.222,000

Amid chaos in PRP, Chiranjeevi defends brother-in-law

Hyderabad, April 5 (IANS) Amid utter chaos in his Praja Rajyam Party (PRP), actor-turned-politician Chiranjeevi Sunday defended his brother-in-law and PRP general secretary Allu Aravind, saying the allegations that he sold tickets for this month’s elections were ‘baseless’.

With dozens of leaders continuing to quit the party to protest lack of transparency in selection of candidates for the assembly and Lok Sabha elections, Chiranjeevi defended Aravind, a film producer who is considered to be the brain behind the actor taking a plunge into politics last year.

Chiranjeevi said the allegations that PRP tickets were being sold were a false propaganda and part of a conspiracy by the rivals to tarnish the image of his party. ‘Unfortunately, these allegations are damaging the party,’ he told reporters here Sunday.

The PRP founder and chief, however, claimed that the selection of candidates was done in a transparent manner and on the basis of a survey done by the party. Reiterating that the party was committed to the goal of social justice, he said out of 294 assembly seats, the party gave tickets to 104 candidates belonging to the backward classes.

‘Never in the history of Indian politics, such a large number of candidates from backward classes were fielded by any party,’ said Chiranjeevi, while exuding confidence that the party would come to power in the state on its own.

Chiranjeevi apologised to former police officer C. Anjaneya Reddy, who resigned Saturday as party vice-president, citing lack of transparency in the selection of candidates for assembly and Lok Sabha elections.

The megastar Sunday sent his brother Naga Babu to Reddy’s residence to persuade him to withdraw his resignation and later offered to personally meet him to sort out the differences.

Addressing ‘meet-the-press’ programme here, Chiranjeevi said Reddy was an upright and honest man and he was shocked to know about his resignation. ‘I am apologising to him and will personally appeal to him to come back to the party,’ said the actor.

Reddy, a former Indian Police Service (IPS) officer and a member of party’s think tank, quit the party saying his hopes of seeing a different party were dashed by the lack of transparency in its selection of candidates.

Reddy said the PRP was no different from the Congress party and the Telugu Desam. ‘It also lacks an organisational setup and everything is in the hands of three or four individuals,’ he said.

Meanwhile, the party appears to be heading for more trouble with the resignations of party’s founder member Samaram and president of Chiranjeevi fans association C. Venkateswara Rao.

Unhappy with the leadership, several leaders quit PRP during the last two weeks. Some of them are even contesting the elections as rebels.

PRP general secretary Prakala Prabhakar and state women’s wing chief Shobha Rani were also reported to have taken a decision to quit the party.

Even P. Mitra, party spokesman and a close aide of Chiranjeevi, is unhappy over the situation prevailing in the party. He was pained and shocked when Chiranjeevi’s younger brother and actor Pavan Kalyan allegedly caught him with the scruff of his neck when he called his fans ‘lumpen elements’.

Fourth front will be formed at Centre: Chiranjeevi

HYDERABAD: Praja Rajyam Party (PRP) chief Chiranjeevi on Sunday said there was a likelihood of a fourth front emerging at the Centre after the
general election.

“My feeling is that why should a fourth front not be formed at the Centre. Those parties which are opposed to the current formations can join hands with us to from the fourth front,” Chiranjeevi told reporters here.

He said the PRP would not support the BJP-led NDA, it would also not support the UPA as the Congress is their main rival in Andhra Pradesh. “Since we are also opposed to the TDP there is no question of supporting the Third Front either, ” Chiranjeevi added.

The PRP Chief asserted that voters of the state would give a clear verdict in this month’s election and ruled out a split verdict. Asked which party would the PRP support or which party support it would take in case of a hung assembly Chiranjeevi said such scenario could be ruled out completely.

“The people are very clear and there is no confusion in their minds,” he observed.

Asked if he would make a dalit the chief minister if PRP was voted to power, Chiranjeevi replied it all depended on the peoples wish. If the people wanted Chiranjeevi would become the chief minister or a dalit could occupied that post, he added.

For voters, assembly polls take primacy

HYDERABAD: Ashok Kumar (name changed) was sounded off for the Secunderabad Lok Sabha by the Prajarajyam. But he declined the offer and instead
switched over to another constituency. Reason: He felt that his party was not strong in the assembly segments in Secunderabad. “It would be difficult for me to win from here, even though I may have been a strong candidate. Our electorate is not so mature. They cast their vote for the Lok Sabha for the same party as they do for the assembly,” Kumar told STOI. Ashok Kumar’s opinion was echoed by many other Lok Sabha candidates in the state.

“I know that ultimately my fate depends on the performance of candidates for assembly seats that form part of my Lok Sabha constituency. Therefore, I need to keep them energised,” said a Congress candidate who does not want to be identified.

Political analysts say that this time in Andhra Pradesh, more than ever before, the electorate is unlikely to make a distinction between the assembly and the Lok Sabha elections.

STOI’s check at the ground level reflected this reality. For example in Tirupati, a manager when asked about the prospects of candidates for the Tirupati Lok Sabha seat was nonplussed.

“Chiranjeevi,” he muttered and had to be reminded that the query was about the Lok Sabha and not about the assembly seat that the mega star is contesting. In the same way when Raju, a waiter at a hotel in Medak quizzed about the polls named – very confidently -the assembly candidate who he thought would win. But remained confused when pressed to reply about his favourite for the Lok Sabha. “I do not know,” he said as if he was not even aware that poll for the Parliament was being held.

Analysts said that this reality of the assembly poll being supreme is the reason for two Union ministers, Renuka Chowdhary and Pallam Raju, moving heaven and earth to change some candidates who had been named to contest assembly segments that formed part of their Lok Sabha constituencies. “The duo understood that with weak or inimical candidates their chances would be marred. Hence their extreme reactions,” an analyst said.
The reasons for the electorate not making a distinction between an assembly vote and a Lok Sabha vote is deeply sociological and a reflection of the way they see the polity. “India is a huge country and each state has an ethos of its own.

Each state is also self-contained. This is true of politics as well. Most people do not look beyond Hyderabad. New Delhi is a far off place,” explained an analyst. The reality is also portrayed by the regional press whose front page mostly covers the state of affairs pertaining to Andhra Pradesh.

“Decisions taken by the state government impact the people directly. Centre’s decisions are perceived not to have an indirect effect. That is why the greater interest in assembly elections,” reasons an IAS officer.
The Parliament elections would come into focus, if there is a strong national issue that becomes central to the elections like, say, national integrity.

But this time around there is nothing of this sort, leading to the Lok Sabha poll getting relegated to the background.

On the contrary, the assembly elections have become more interesting what with the expectations of a three way fight.

Krishnam Raju, Murali Mohan in star fight for Rajahmundry

Hyderabad, April 4 (IANS) It will be a clash of stars in the Rajahmundry Lok Sabha constituency in coastal Andhra Pradesh as the Praja Rajyam Party (PRP) has fielded veteran actor U.V. Krishnam Raju against Telugu Desam Party’s (TDP) Murali Mohan.

It is expected to be an interesting three-cornered contest as the ruling Congress party’s U. Arun Kumar is seeking re-election.

Krishnam Raju, popularly known as the ‘rebel star’, recently quit the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and joined the PRP of actor-turned-politician Chiranjeevi. The former central minister’s name figures in the seventh list of candidates released by the PRP Friday night.

Though Krishnam Raju was keen to contest from either Kakinada or Narsapur, the constituencies he represented earlier, Chiranjeevi has pitted him against another actor of yesteryears Murali Mohan.

Krishnam Raju, who plunged into politics in the early 1990s, contested the 1991 Lok Sabha elections on a Congress ticket from Narsapur constituency, but lost.

He later joined BJP and got elected twice to Lok Sabha from Kakinada and Narsapur in the 1998 and 1999 elections respectively. He also served as minister of state for external affairs in the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) government from 2000 to 2004 but lost the 2004 elections from Narsapur.

Since then, he was keeping a low-profile and was unhappy with the style of functioning of the BJP. While joining the PRP a few days ago, he had said that he was impressed by the policies of megastar Chiranjeevi.

Krishnam Raju, who began his film career in 1966, was a popular actor in the 1970s and 1980s and has acted in over 180 films. He is the fourth film personality in Andhra Pradesh to join the race for this month’s Lok Sabha elections.

Popular actress Vijayshanti is contesting as the Telangana Rashtra Samiti (TRS) candidate from Medak while Chiranjeevi’s brother-in-law and film producer Allu Aravind is the PRP candidate from Ankapalli.

Though Murali Mohan, a contemporary of Krishnam Raju, has been an active leader in the TDP for many years, this is the first time that he is contesting an election.

Murali Mohan, who started his career in the early 1970s, acted in several films over the next one decade. He later turned a producer. After taking a break from active cinema, he joined TDP and became chairman of the Andhra Pradesh Film Development Corporation. He also started the construction company Jayabher Group, which built many residential projects in and around Hyderabad.

The two actors will be facing Arun Kumar, the sitting Congress MP who has been in the news for taking on media baron Ramoji Rao. However, he faces an uphill task this time as a section of the electorate in Rajahmundry feels that he has not done much for the constituency’s development.

The BJP, which won this seat in 1998 and 1999, has fielded its state general secretary Somu Veeraju but he is not considered a strong candidate.
