Mayawati slams Congress party’s austerity drive

Lucknow, Sep 18 (ANI): Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Mayawati has ridiculed Congress party’s austerity drive, terming it as a ploy to steer attention away from the steep price rise.

Addressing a mass rally here on Thursday, Mayawati hit out at the Congress party, calling its austerity drive “a drama.”

“Because of the wrong doings by the Congress government at the centre, the prices are rising due to which poor people across the country are suffering. And now to cover up its weaknesses, they have cut down on its travelling expenses by flying economy class and travelling by train. All this is just a drama,” Mayawati said.

“With a drought looming and elections in some states approaching, the Congress-led government has embarked on a much-publicised austerity drive,” she added.

In a country where the hierarchy of politicians is determined by the size of their bungalows and their convoys, Congress Party President Sonia Gandhi has asked party leaders to give up a fifth of their salaries for drought-relief work, and she flew economy class on a commercial flight to Mumbai to launch the poll campaign.

The finance ministry has appealed for fewer overseas trips with smaller entourages, and a ban on conferences in luxury hotels.

Bharatiya Janata Party and other political parties have criticised the austerity measures in view of the economic downturn and drought-like situation prevailing in the country as a case of ‘tokenism’. (ANI)

Schoolteachers baton-charged in Lucknow on Teachers’ Day

Lucknow, Sep 5(ANI): At least 12 primary schoolteachers suffered injuries during a demonstration to demand confirmation of their jobs and increments on Teachers’ Day.

The teachers alleged they were staging a peaceful protest when the police, for no fault of their own, baton-charged them.

“The teachers had staged a peaceful protest. During the demonstration, the police baton-charged the teachers on the orders Chief Minister Mayawati. This is the gift to all the teachers on the occasion of Teachers’ Day,” said Suraj Yadav, a teacher.

Meanwhile, the police said they had to use force to disperse the protestors after they blocked the road.

“Today, in front of Vidhan Sabha (Legislative Assembly) teachers had staged a sit-in protest. Some people tried to block the road. They were requested to clear the road. Stones were pelted in which our ADM (Additional District Magistrate) and SP (Superintendent of Police) city and others have been injured. They were chased away by the police,” said R N Dwivedi, police circle officer.

The police further claimed that no one was seriously injured in the incident. (ANI)

BSP to Sonia Gandhi: Apologise to Mayawati in Parliament for Joshi slur

Lucknow, July 16 (ANI): The controversial arrest of Uttar Pradesh Congress unit chief Rita Bahuguna Joshi over her objectionable remarks on State Chief Minister Mayawati has taken the shape of a major political clash with the Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP)-led State government here.

BSP State chief Satish Mishra on Thursday demanded that Congress Party President Sonia Gandhi apologise in the Lok Sabha for Joshi’s remarks against Mayawati.

Bahuguna’s house was set ablaze and some property at the premises was targeted by some unidentified hooligans here on Thursday.

The Congress party blamed BSP workers for the arson act.

Reacting to the incident, Congress party spokesman Abhishek Manu Singhvi said: “It’s a state-sponsored vandalism, hooliganism. We are certainly going to take a serious note of it and all possible legal recourse available to us.”

BSP leaders, however, claimed that Congress workers had set fire to Joshi’s house.

“Our workers did not torch Rita’s house. It was rather Congress workers who set it ablaze,” said Mishra.

State police later claimed to have detained four persons in connection with the incident.

Meanwhile, police prevented the burning of an effigy of Mayawati today. They also baton and cane-charged Congress workers and detained about a hundred of them while they staged a street demonstration against Congress leader Joshi’s arrest.

Police arrested Joshi on Thursday and a local court sent her to 14-day judicial remand for making remarks on Wednesday against the CM in an issue related to rape and murder of some Dalit girls in the UP.

The Samajwadi Party, the main opposition party in Uttar Pradesh State Assembly, blamed the police and offered the Congress party any proposal to carry out a joint protest against the state of affairs in Uttar Pradesh. They criticised the police for acting at the behest of State Government.

“Police are working on the directions of Mayawati Government,” said Akhilesh Yadav, Samajwadi Party’s U.P unit chief.

Bharatiya Janata Party leader Maneka Gandhi demanded the dismissal of the Uttar Pradesh government.

“Time has come for dismissal of the UP Government. In my constituency, about 50 political workers are detained every week. I have never seen a situation like this in India ever,” said Maneka Gandhi.

Joshi was arrested in Ghaziabad en route to New Delhi. She was charged under the Scheduled Caste and Scheduled Tribe (Prevention of Atrocities) Act 1989, for allegedly making derogatory remarks about Mayawati.

Joshi, however, has denied having said anything to offend Mayawati or Dalits.

“It was at a meeting in Moradabad that I had simply sought to draw the people’s attention to the fact that Mayawati’s dole of Rs.25,000 to every Dalit rape victim was quite ironical as the state police chief was spending lakhs on the helicopter ride that he undertakes to hand over that paltry amount to the victim,” Joshi told media persons. Center urges Mayawati to avoid personal vendetta

New Delhi July 16 (ANI): The Congress Party and UPA Government at the center has urged Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Mayawati to avoid settling political and personal scores through the through the nation’s courts.

However, it said the issue between UP Congress Committee Chief Rita Bahuguna Joshi and Mayawati is a matter both had to settle themselves.

The UPCC has demanded an inquiry by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) on the entire episode, as it has no faith in state investigating agencies.

Reacting to the arrest of Bahugauna, Congress spokesperson Abhishek Manu Singhvi described it as disproportionate reaction of the State Government. (ANI)

There has been no move so far by the police to nab the culprits. No formal case has been registered. (ANI)

Centre seeks explanation from Mayawati on Noida park project

New Delhi, July 11 (ANI): Ministry of Environment and Forest has sought an explanation from Uttar Pradesh government over alleged violation of environmental laws in construction of a park in NOIDA

Uttar Pradesh Government is constructing Memorial Park in 33-hectare area along the Yamuna Riverbed in Sector 15 -A of NOIDA.

State government is installing statues of Chief Minister Mayawati, her political mentor Kanshi Ram, and Dr B. R. Ambedkar in this park. This park is a new addition to the controversial statue installation projects taken up by the Mayawati’s government.

Residents and environmentalists are opposing to the statue installations as it violated the green law.

Earlier, the team of Indian Forest Service officers sent by the Central Government to probe the alleged violations found out that around 6,000 trees have been chop down for the project. Their report also pointed that the State government ignored an environment impact assessment required for such a projects.

“The team during its field visit found that the state government lacks a strong stand on environment appraisal and forestry appraisal. The team opined that the state government should have taken forest and environment clearances. To consider the opinion of the state government, we have asked for their comments,” said Union Minister of State for Environment and Forest Jai Ram Ramesh on Saturday in National Capital

Earlier this week a two-Judge Bench of the Supreme Court refused to intervene in the statue installation projects of UP government. (ANI)

Radio Pakistan now comes to the aid of Dalits in India

Abohar, July 6 (ANI): Radio Pakistan in its Punjabi Durbar programme has taken up the cause of Dalit community in India.

The Radio Pakistan has said that the Dalits in India do not have even basic rights.

The allegation has been rubbished by Babu Ram Chawla, General Secretary of All India Khatik Samaj and Mangat Ram Chayal, Vice Chairman of Punjab Pradesh Congress Committee (Schedule Caste department).

“The statements of Pakistan radio about schedule castes in India are illogical. For, people of schedule caste have gained all rights in India from Government and the society. They have been given reservation in jobs, educational institutions, and a number of them are Members of Parliament. So the statements by Pakistan Radio are malicious and we should not believe it,” said Babu Ram Chawla, General Secretary of All India Khatik Samaj.

“Pakistan wants to mislead us. There are special welfare programs in politics, administration for the people of schedule castes. The schedule castes have positioned themselves from Gram Panchayat to the designation of President, the highest position in India,” said Mangatram Chayal, Vice Chairman of the Punjab Pradesh Congress Committee, Supreme Court Department.

Broadcasters of Radio Pakistan will do their listeners a good service by first keeping themselves update about India through newspapers and other news sources.

As they must also remember that only recently all Member of Parliaments unanimously chose Meira Kumar as the head of Lok Sabha, who besides being a highly educated and experienced parliamentarian, comes from a schedule caste community. Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Mayawati is also one of the most popular personalities which inspires the Dalits across the country.

India has a history of individuals from schedule caste or Dalit community occupying highest positions in all walks of life without prejudice.

In jobs and education, all socially backward or schedule caste people today have reservations to encourage their participation in mainstream.

Moreover, the Right to Equality is a fundamental right enshrined in the Constitution of India. (ANI)

Money for statues should have been used for the poor: Congress

New Delhi, June 29 (ANI): The Congress party on Monday said the money used for installing statues of Dalit icons by Uttar Pradesh’s Chief Minister Mayawati could have been used for upliftment of the poor and backwards in the state.

Stating that the party was not against installing statues of national heroes, Congress said, but it was against “overdoing” it.

“We feel the money (spent on statues) could have been used for upliftment of the poor and backwards in the state,” Shakeel Ahmed, Congress spokesman said in the national capital.

“We are not against memorials for national heroes…But when it is overdone, it becomes problematic,” Ahmed added.

Meanwhile, reacting on Samajwadi Party chief Mulayam Singh Yadav’s comments of bulldozing the statues if he could, Ahmed said this could be his (SP chief’s) thinking but certainly not that of the Congress party.

When asked Congress party’s reaction to Mayawati’s comments stating making Meira Kumar the Speaker of Lok Sabha would not help Dalits, the Congress spokeman said: “If someone cannot understand the importance of the post of the Speaker, what can we say?” (ANI)

Supreme Court issues notice to UP government on statues issue

New Delhi, June 29 (ANI): A vacation bench of the Supreme Court on Monday issued notice to the Uttar Pradesh Government for allegedly misusing public money to install statues of prominent Dalit leaders like herself, Dr B R Ambedkar, Kanshi Ram and the party’s elephant symbol.

The vacation bench heard a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) filed against Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Mayawati. The PIL is seeking a stay on the further inauguration of these statues on July 3.

The petitioner has alleged that the multi-crore projects of installing statues are being carried out as part of state policy, which is arbitrary and violates Article 14 of the Constitution.

The PIL also sought the removal of statues of Mayawati and all party symbols from public places.

Mayawati had unveiled 15 statues, which include that of party founder Kanshi Ram and six of herself on June 25.

Delhi-based lawyer Ravi Kanta, who filed the PIL, said every action taken by the Uttar Pradesh Government must be seen to be in the public interest. The arbitrary actions of the State Government must be invalidated, he added.

Mayawati, her party and the state’s Chief Secretary were named respondents in the PIL. (ANI)

UP Government to start process to reinstate sacked cops

Lucknow, May 25 (ANI): The Mayawati Government today said it will start the process to reinstate the terminated policemen with immediate effect after the Supreme Court ordered to give provisional appointment to sacked policemen recruited during Samajwadi Party’s rule.

“As the Supreme Court has not given a stay to the state government, services of the cops terminated earlier, would be reinstated as per the order issued by a two-judge bench of the Allahabad High Court on December 8 last year,” Special Secretary (Home) D K Gupta told reporters here.

He said that as per the HC order an exercise to segregate tainted policemen from the non-tainted ones would be undertaken and a committee would be constituted for this.

Asked about the exact number of policemen to be reinstated, Gupta said over 18,000 policemen were recruited through 42 recruitment boards in PAC, civil police and wireless in 2007.

Earlier in the day, the Supreme Court directed the Uttar Pradesh Government to provide provisional appointments to over 22,000 police constables whom Chief Minister Mayawati sacked in 2007.

Those sacked had been appointed by the Mulayam Singh Yadav regime.

The Mayawati government alleged large-scale anomalies in appointments as soon as it came to power in 2007.

Following the Supreme Court order, Mulayam Singh Yadav lashed out at the state government, and demanded Mayawati’s resignation.

“After the Supreme Court’s decision, if Mayawati has some morality, she should immediately resign from the post of Chief Minister,” said Mulayam Singh Yadav. (ANI)

SC directs Mayawati to provide provisional appointment to sacked constables

New Delhi, May 25 (ANI): The Supreme Court on Monday directed the Uttar Pradesh Government to provide provisional appointments to over 22,000 police constables whom Chief Minister Mayawati sacked in 2007.

Those sacked had been appointed by the Mulayam Singh Yadav regime.

The Mayawati government alleged large scale anomalies in appointments as soon as it came to power in 2007.

Earlier, the Allahabad High Court had issued a contempt notice against the UP Government for failing to reinstate the constables.

Following the Supreme Court order, Mulayam Singh Yadav lashed out at the state government and demanded Mayawati’s resignation.

‘After the Supreme Court’s decision, if Mayawati has some morality, she should immediately resign from the post of chief minister,’ said Mulayam Singh Yadav, President of the Samajwadi Party.

“If Mayawati does not resign, we will meet the Governor and the President to demand the dismissal of her government,” he added. (ANI)

Mayawati to give outside support to new UPA Government

Lucknow, May 19 (ANI): Further strengthening the stability to the new United Progressive Alliance (UPA) Government, Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) Chief and Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Mayawati on Tuesday said that her party would give outside support to the Congress-led alliance without any condition.

Mayawati further said that her party has agreed to provide outside support of all 21 MPs to the UPA Government without any condition.

“To weaken the communal forces of the country and keeping the Bharatiya Janata Party- led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) away from power,” Mayawati added.

Mayawati also said that she had authorised senior BSP leader Satish C. Mishra to go to the President Pratibha Patil to hand over a letter extending her party’s support to the UPA government. (ANI)

New government begins taking shape

New Delhi, May 19 (ANI): Political activity in the national capital has picked up with various parties jostling and lobbying for their representatives’ inclusion in the new cabinet.

With the Congress Parliamentary Party (CPP) convening a meeting of its victorious parliamentarians in Parliament House, the major contenders bidding for inclusion are Rashtriya Janata Dal chief and former Railway Minister Lalu Yadav, who has been a steady supporter of the Congress, Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) chief and former Agriculture Minister Sharad Pawar and Tamil Nadu’s ruling Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK), which defied political odds and emerged victorious in the general elections.

The Congress, which has achieved a decisive popular mandate, is debating over whether it needs to include Samajwadi Party supreme Mulayam Singh Yadav in the cabinet, as his party, which is ready to offer outside support, played a crucial role in extending support to the UPA during the debate over the US-India nuclear cooperation deal.

There is speculation by certain elements within the Congress, who feel that the Samajwadi Party wavered during the elections, and that it would be a better option to rely on leaders of smaller parties like Ajit Singh of the Rashtriya Lok Dal, H D Kumaraswamy of the Janata Dal (Secular) and Omar Abdullah of the National Conference.

The Bahujan Samaj Party, which is led by Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Mayawati, has said today that it is ready to extend outside support to the UPA Government.

The Congress will also have to be mindful of the fact that it does not enjoy majority status in the Rajya Sabha and that the inclusion of some of these groups in the government would help the Congress to push its program through the Upper House.

Within the Congress, there is a possibility that younger elements like Jyotiraditya Scindia, Milind Deora and Sachin Pilot may be accommodated in the Cabinet.

Insofar as the profile of the cabinet is concerned, the Prime Minister, Dr. Manmohan Singh, will have to take crucial decisions like who he would like as his Railway and HRD Ministers and whether to include or not to include Trinamool Congress chief Mamata Banerjee in the cabinet. There is also speculation that former Deputy Chairman of the Planning Commission and Dr. Singh’s close confidant, Dr. Montek Singh Alhuwalia, will be made the Finance Minister.

As far as the profile of the Prime Minister’s Office is concerned, the expectation is that National Security Adviser M.K.Narayanan will continue in the same assignment as he has been able to maintain an even keel during the management of several crises, and has a background as Director of the Intelligence Bureau and head of the Joint Intelligence Group.

Former PIO and now media adviser to the PM, Deepak Sandhu, is also expected to be retained. The new government will also be on the lookout for a new Home Secretary, as the present incumbent, Madhukar Gupta is to superannuate after receiving an extension. A new Foreign Secretary is expected to be in place by July with the superannuation of present incumbent Shiv Shankar Menon.

Among other expected to get fresh assignments are former Foreign Secretary Shyam Saran, who played a notable role in finalizing the US-India civil nuclear cooperation deal. (ANI)

Uttar Pradesh Government withdraws NSA against Varun

Lucknow, May 14 (ANI): Mayawati-led Uttar Pradesh Government on Thursday revoked the National Security Act (NSA) invoked against Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Varun Gandhi for allegedly making hate speeches.

UP Government’s decision came hours after the Supreme Court ordered the State Government to revoke the NSA against Varun Gandhi.

Varun was arrested under the NSA on March 29.

Earlier in the day, the Supreme Court revoked the NSA invoked against Varun Gandhi for making an alleged ‘hate-speech’ in Pilibhit.

Varun had challenged the imposition of the NSA by the Uttar Pradesh Government in the apex court and demanded compensation of rupees 10 lakh from Chief Minister Mayawati.

The imposition of NSA on Varun has also been termed invalid by the Uttar Pradesh Advisory Board appointed by the Allahabad High Court to go into the merits of the case.

The government argued that the Advisory Board’s decision was incorrect, as it had ignored several cogent evidences against Varun.

Varun had submitted his representation before an Advisory Board in the Lucknow bench of the Allahabad High Court on April 28 against slapping of the NSA over his alleged hate speech in Pilibhit.

As the ultimate statutory authority on the NSA, the Advisory Board has the right to approve or revoke the government order invoking the act against Varun.

The verdict of the Advisory Board is final and if it chooses to revoke the NSA, Varun would be set free with immediate effect.

Varun was charged for making highly inflammatory anti-Muslim utterances during his poll campaign in Pilibhit. (ANI)

EC describes Maoists as ‘biggest’ threat to polls

New Delhi, May 14 (ANI): The Election Commission has described Maoists as the biggest threat to the recently concluded elections.

“Our biggest challenge was security especially in Maoist belts because out of our 8,38,000 polling booths, 1,38,000 booths fall under Maoist belts,” said S.Y. Qureshi, Election Commissioner.

On being asked to comment on the Election Commission’s advice to Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in the Varun Gandhi incident, Qureshi said that they only advised a political party making all things clear.

“This perception is wrong that we exceeded our power and advised someone. You must remember that we did not give advise to anyone walking on the road. We gave advise to a political party, who was the co-respondent in the case. They said that the statement made by Varun was wrong. We condemn it and we distance from him. We wrote in the order that we know our limitations. We also don’t have the judicial right to disqualify any candidate, but we can always give advise to a responsible political party,” added Qureshi.

When asked about Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Mayawati’s allegation that he was working at the ‘behest of the Congress’, he strongly condemned the allegation.

Earlier, the Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) president had alleged that Qureshi was proximate to a ‘senior leader of the Samajwadi Party’ and ‘is an old friend of the Congress’ and accused him of acting on the basis of bogus complaints made by Opposition parties.

“People keep raising their fingers at the Election Commission. Political leaders tend to get emotional during campaigning, but such actions are inappropriate. I have no idea about who said what. But all these are inappropriate. We must condemn all this. I deny it and I condemn it,” he added.

On the controversy revolving the recommendation made by N. Gopalaswami, former Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) seeking the removal of his colleague, Navin Chawla, Qureshi said that the former CEC never consulted him.

“(Gopalaswami never consulted me. The matter was between him and the President. The President’s stance was that the CEC has the power to recommend. That’s why, he didn’t deem it necessary to consult us neither did he do it,” added Qureshi. (ANI)

Battle of words on as rival Gandhi scions step up poll campaign

Aligarh/ Pilibhit, May 1 (ANI): Rival scions of the Nehru-Gandhi dynasty are campaigning across the country to woo voters for general elections.

Rahul Gandhi of the Congress Party and his cousin Varun Gandhi of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) made development their poll plank.

Addressing a pubic rally in Aligarh, Rahul Gandhi blamed the BJP for the 1999 hijacking of a national carrier flight to Kandahar in Afghanistan.

“During the time of elections, the BJP leaders talk about terrorism. They say that Congress Party does not fight terrorism. After Mumbai terror attacks, the Prime Minister put pressure on Pakistan and they for the first time accepted that perpetrators were from their soil. When the BJP was in power, the aircraft reached Kandahar. And Jaswant Singh had to concede defeat. And now they say that they don’t remember what happened. We don’t remember how minister went there,” said Rahul.

Congress leaders have been accusing the BJP of being responsible for the release of three Kashmir separatist militants to save the 189 hostages of the Airbus A-300, which was hijacked by five armed men on the Christmas Eve in 1999.

Rahul also took a dig at Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Mayawati for “mishandling” Central-allotted funds, and poked fun at the BSP’s election symbol, which happens to be an elephant.

“We send money from Delhi. But there is an elephant sitting in Lucknow, which doesn’t eat grass. It’s a special elephant, it doesn’t eat grass, and it eats your money. But we will talk about it later. We will push out that elephant in its third year. We will do that together,” added Rahul.

Meanwhile, Varun Gandhi, addressed a public rally in Pilibhit parliamentary constituency, from where he is contesting.

“I have fought this fight for your respect. Everybody wants bread to eat, but everyone want respect as well. I am standing here for the safety of children, for your respect and for your dignity. I just want to say that even if I get beheaded, I don’t care, but I won’t put your dignity at stake,” said Varun.

Varun ran into a controversy after he delivered a controversial speech during a public meeting in Pilibhit on March 7. (ANI)

Mayawati says a ‘dalit’s daughter’ should be made next PM

Ramaipur, Apr 25 (ANI): Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) chief and Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Mayawati on Saturday said a ‘dalit’s daughter’ should be made the Prime Minister of the country.

Mayawati further said a dalit Prime Minister would ensure the upliftment of the backward and minority communities in the country.

“If you make a dalit’s daughter the Prime Minister, then UP will be famous in the entire world. If the BSP comes to power at the Centre, UP will occupy a special place,” Mayawati said at an election rally here.

The UP Chief Minister also asked people to vote for her party to ensure state’s development.

“Unless the BSP government is in power both at the Centre and the state, the country and Uttar Pradesh will not progress,” she added.

Mayawati also criticized Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh for criticizing her government’s track-record on development.

“The Prime Minister is not at fault. He will speak what the Congress leaders will tell him to say,” she added.

The BSP supremo further said the Congress party was nervous about the growing support base of her party.

“The Congress is very nervous about the growing support base of the Bahujan Samaj Party and therefore its leaders are resorting to giving misleading statements. It was the UPA government, which had rejected her demand for a 80,000-crore development package which forced her party to withdraw support to the alliance,” Mayawati added. (ANI)

Congress slams Mayawati for misusing Central funds

Lucknow, Apr 25 (ANI): Uttar Pradesh Congress unit chief Rita Bahuguna Joshi on Saturday slammed state Chief Minister Mayawati for not utilizing Central Government funds allotted for the development of the state properly.

“Mayawati-led Uttar Pradesh Government has misused the money allotted by the Central Government for the development of the State. The millions of rupees handed over to the state under the Jawaharlal Nehru City Development scheme were used to build statues. If Mayawati comes to power, she will turn around the look of the city,” Joshi said during a roadshow here.

Joshi further said that if voted to power, the Congress-led United Progressive Alliance (UPA) Government would change the status of the city.

“When we come to power we will see the money is utilized. If we come to power I will change Lucknow University into a Central University. I will set up factories for the employment of the youths and will change the status of the city like the other metropolitan cities,” she added.

Bahuguna, who is also the Congress’ candidate for Lucknow, will fight against the Bharatiya Janata Party’s Lalji Tandon and the Samajwadi Party’s Nafisa Ali. (ANI)

Sanjay Dutt calls Mayawati ‘sister’, apologizes for ‘Jhappi’ dialogue

Pratapgarh, Apr. 22 (ANI): Saying that the Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Mayawati was just like a sister to him, Samajwadi Party General Secretary Sanjay Dutt has apologized Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister for his “Jadu ki Jhappi” remarks.

In his reply to the district magistrate and district election officer on Tuesday, Dutt apologized for the remarks and said it was a mere dialogue from his Bollywood blockbuster Munnabhai series which were used in the rally to spread a message of love in society.

Dutt added that the “Jhappi” dialogue was from a brother to a sister to strengthen the bonds.

“Even so, if the dialogue has hurt the sentiments of anyone I apologise for it”, Dutt said in his reply.

Earlier, a notice had been issued against Dutt for allegedly passing a “sexist remark” on Mayawati.

During an election rally in Pratapgarh on Saturday, Dutt offered ‘jaadu ki jhappi’ to Mayawati who, he said, could not do any developmental work in the region.

“I will give Mayawati a hug and a kiss (jaadu ki jhappi). In her governance there are taps but no water, bulbs but no electricity, and hospitals without beds,” Dutt said at an election rally in Pratapgarh on April 17, 2009.

The District Magistrate of Pratapgarh issued a notice to him for passing sexist comments against Mayawati.

Dutt played the lead protagonist in popular movie, Munna Bhai Lage Raho, which promoted the concept of “Gandhigiri.” The concept advocates Gandhian ideals like truth and non-violence in contemporary terms. (ANI)

Mayawati is India’s anti-Obama: Newsweek

New York, April 20 (IANS) Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Mayawati features on the cover of Newsweek’s latest edition, with the US weekly drawing parallels between her and US President Barack Obama – in their rise to political heights though belonging to the bottom of the social ladder.

However, the weekly with the Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) chief’s photo on its cover design, says Mayawati is a ‘bigger underdog’ and a ‘bigger threat’ to the ‘established order than Obama was’.

While commenting her ‘suspiciously ostentatious fortune’ and her ‘limited accomplishments’ on behalf of the socially oppressed Dalits, whose cause she champions, the weekly has said her possible bagging the prime ministership would ‘ironically end up bolstering the caste system that has kept them (Dalits) in chains’.

She would ‘likely be a highly divisive national leader – an anti-Obama – and not only domestically’.

Mayawati became the chief minister of India’s most populous state of Uttar Pradesh in 2007 on her own steam. She is now gunning for the country’s top job, or even as king maker, after the parliamentary elections in India get over in May.

‘Her supporters are trying to position her as India’s answer to America’s youthful black president,’ the weekly said.

It said the chances of her party actually winning a majority of the seats in parliament were unlikely. ‘But the likely outcome is that the two main parties, Congress and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), will be forced to rely on coalitions. Mayawati’s followers hope she’ll emerge as kingmaker in the negotiations, with enough clout to grab the top job herself.’

‘There are indeed parallels between Mayawati and Obama. Like America’s president, Mayawati is young – just 53 in a country where most political leaders are in their 70s.

‘She is also an outsider who comes from a long-oppressed segment of society: the Dalits.

‘Mayawati is both a bigger underdog and a potentially bigger threat to the established order than Obama was. While he benefited from a first-class education, she grew up in a shantytown with eight brothers and sisters and attended poor state schools.

‘Obama enjoyed the backing of a long-established party, while Mayawati’s organization, the BSP, has been built up largely by Mayawati herself – and in a part of the world where women have made it to the pinnacle of power only as wives, widows or daughters of beloved male leaders.

‘But unlike Obama, Mayawati has built her power on demagogic class warfare. As her national ambitions have grown, she recently began reaching out to upper-caste voters – but by playing on their fears of the upwardly mobile middle castes, not by appealing to their better, caste-free angels.

‘She has accumulated a suspiciously ostentatious fortune, and is dogged by corruption charges. She is admired by many Dalits, but often more for her power and jewels than for her limited accomplishments on their behalf.

‘Her victory, if it comes, may be seen as a great leap forward for India’s oppressed – but, ironically, will end up bolstering the caste system that has kept them in chains.

‘Mayawati would likely be a highly divisive national leader – an anti-Obama – and not only domestically.’
