Another CCTV footage of Kasab to be played in court today

Mumbai, July 16 (ANI): Another CCTV footage of Ajmal Amir Kasab, the lone surviving terrorist involved the terror attacks in Mumbai on November 26, 2008, will be played in court today.

Special prosecutor Ujjawal Nikam said the video of Kasab was retrieved from the Times of India building, facing Chhatrapati Shivaji Railway terminus (CST) railway station.

“Before attacking Cama Hospital, the moments and acts of Kasab and his associate Abu Ismael at CST were recorded in the CCTV cameras installed at the TOI building,” he said on Wednesday.

CCTV cameras installed at the TOI building had captured the moments of Kasab and his associate firing and lobbing hand grenades while heading towards the Cama Hospital.

Earlier this month, a press photographer who clicked the picture of Kasab as he stepped out of CST station, had identified him in court. (ANI)

BJP, Shiv Sena remember Lord Rama only during polls: Sonia Gandhi

Marathwada (Maharashtra), Apr 20 (ANI): Congress President Sonia Gandhi on Monday accused the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the Shiv Sena of taking the country backward and said these parties remember Lord Rama only during elections.

“It is unfortunate that those invoking the name of secular and democratic ruler like Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj are those who divide people on the basis of region and religion. These people remember Lord Rama only during elections,” Gandhi said while addressing an election rally in Jalana in Marathwada region on Monday.

Gandhi also accused the BJP and the Shiv Sena of being ‘communal and parochial’.

“The new generation is fed up of politics of regionalism, casteism and also criminalisation of politics,” she added.

Gandhi termed the Indo-US nuclear deal as an achievement of the United Progressive Alliance (UPA).

“The deal was done on our terms but due to opposition, the country’s image tarnished globally,” she added.

Gandhi also criticized the BJP and the Shiv Sena for opposing initiatives of the UPA Government on economic liberlisation.

“These people were opposing us and ridiculing us when we were initiating steps like 33 per cent reservation of women, computerisation and IT revolution,” Gandhi charged.

Gandhi also recalled the Congress-led UPA Government’s achievement during its five-year tenure at the Centre.

“The waiver of Rs. 65,000 crore loan of farmers and providing pension and insurance in unorganised labour sector were the important decisions,” she added.

Meanwhile, addressing a rally in Dondaeecha town of Dhule District, Gandhi slammed BJP’s prime ministerial candidate Lal Krishna Advani for releasing the terrorists during the Kandahar plane hijack episode.

“Perhaps their definition of a strong leader is one who was deputy Prime Minister and Home Minister when there were a series of terror attacks including one on Parliament. Arrested terrorists were released and taken to Kandahar as if they were guests,” Gandhi said. (ANI)

Kasab planned to target Malabar Hills too during the Mumbai attacks

Mumbai, Apr 19 (ANI): Ajmal Amir Kasab, the lone survivour of Mumbai terror attacks, has confessed that he and his associate were also planning to attack the posh Malabar Hills area of the city.

Located in south Mumbai, Malabar Hills is home to Maharashtra’s top officials and businessmen.

Public Prosecutor Ujjwal Nikam said that Kasab’s retraction from his earlier confessional statement, saying it was made under duress, would have no effect on the trial.

“The confessional statement from which Kasab has retracted will have no effect on the case. Although this has been proved that Kasab and his associates had pre-planned the attack on Mumbai and had their training in Pakistan. And after coming to India, he retracted from his confessional statement and thereafter his saying that he was juvenile, was all a part of this planning,” said Nikam.

Kasab could face the gallows if found guilty.

“Nikam told the court on which evidence he is going to reply and what all material his prosecution team had collected,” said Abbas Kazmi, defence attorney.

Kasab has been charged with criminal conspiracy, waging war against nation, committing robbery and has also been under various other Indian Penal Code sections.

Kasab has also been charged with the murder of Mumbai police officials Hemant Karkare, Tukaram Ombale, Vijay Salaskar, and Ashok Kamte.

Kasab has been booked for direct involvement in seven cases and as a co-conspirator in five cases. He has also been indirectly charged with killing people at the Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus (CST). (ANI)

Kasab retracts confession, says it was made under duress

Mumbai, Apr 17 (ANI): Ajmal Amir Kasab, the lone survivour of Mumbai terror attacks, has retracted his confession, saying he was forced to confess under duress.

SG Abbas Kazmi, who was appointed Kasab’s lawyer, had earlier claimed that he was a minor and that the trial should be held in a juvenile court. The court, however, rejected the application moved by Kasab’s lawyer.

Public Prosecutor Ujjwal Nikam objected to this, saying Kasab in his own admission had told the court that he is 22. The defence lawyer could not prove his claim and the court rejected the application.

The trial of Amir Kasab began here on Friday at the special session court inside the heavily-guarded Arthur Road Jail here.

Nikam said that Kasab was an active member of conspiracy that was hatched in Pakistan to commit terror attacks in India.

Kasab also reportedly confessed that he was the best shooter in the team.

“The Pakistani army official was impressed by my firing skills with the Kalashnikov and he also said I was the best shooter in the team. I was the destroyer,” Kasab reportedly confessed.

Kasab also mentioned the involvement of Pakistani officials in the Mumbai attacks. The confession mentioned that a serving member of the Pakistani Army, Colonel Saadat Ullah, has allegedly helped to set up the internet telephony system through which the gunmen received instruction from their Pakistan-based handlers.

He also revealed that he and the other nine terrorists were given training in trekking, warfare in sea, operating Global Positioning System, how to find direction and navigate in unknown and. (ANI)

Mumbai airport to have a new integrated passenger terminal building

Mumbai, Feb 20 (ANI): Union Civil Aviation Minister Praful Patel on Friday announced a new integrated passenger terminal building at Chhatrapati Shivaji International Airport at Sahar.

The ground breaking ceremony was performed in the presence of Patel and the Maharashtra Chief Minister Ashok Chavan here.

The new terminal building will cater to both domestic and international passengers.

Chhatrapati Shivaji International Airport is India’s busiest airport, with passenger traffic of 25.8 million per annum.

According to the sources, the terminal building will have a total floor area of approximately 4.3 million square meters spread across four levels.

The Maharashtra Chief Minister thanked the Civil Aviation Minister for his association, and said, “The growth of business requires better connectivity and good airport. International travellers are coming to Mumbai and Pune. Today, we are compared with the other growing cities of the world. I am really obliged by the initiative taken by the department and other private enterprises, which have joined hands with India.”

Addressing the media persons, Patel said, “The problem with the aviation industry globally as well as in India, is the slowdown in the economic recession, which has taken its toll. International traffic is much lower and domestic traffic has also significantly come down. Last year’s Mumbai terror attacks have also affected the international traffic.”

He, however, assured that the government has taken a number of steps including reduction of duty on Aviation Turbine Fuel (ATF) and price revision of ATF to help the aviation sector.

The minister also said the government would take action if there was evidence of a cartel.

He further added that watchdog Monopolies and Restrictive Trade Practices Commission was investigating a fare increase by airlines last week.

Meanwhile, the airport located within the city, its modernization and up-gradation is considered a challenge because of land constraints.

The proposed new airport terminal is being built by removing slum dwellers of the area leading to protests by some of them.

The protestors demanded immediate rehabilitation of the slum dwellers.

The police later arrested the protestors. (ANI)

Oil PSU strike hampering flights, fuel delivery schedules

Mumbai, Jan.8 (ANI): The strike called by officials of state-run oil firms in the country is affecting the aviation industry badly.

On Thursday, around a dozen flights were delayed for between 45 minutes to an hour, leaving several passengers stranded at Mumbai’s Chhatrapati Shivaji International Airport.

Passengers were harried and troubled as they waited for their flights.

Expressing anger at the state of affairs, some of the passengers said the strike should be called off immediately.

“Information gathered by me, partly it is because of the shortage in
fuel supply. So, I think, in the interest of the nation, the strikers should re- consider. All of us are stranded and there seems no end to the suspense,” said Kuldeep Nautiyal, a passenger.

“The flight has been delayed by an hour. I don”t know what to do, should I get it (my ticket) refunded or not, I”ll have to just check it out,” said Rashid Akhtar, another passenger.

Employees of India”s state-run oil firms are on an indefinite strike since Wednesday over demands for higher pay and perquisites. Operations at four refineries have been hit by the strike.

The strike has also affected fuel supply to the Indian army as the tankers engaged in supplying fuel to the army bases were reportedly stranded in Ambala .

A large number of petrol tankers with signboards reading ”On Army Duty” stood outside the office of Indian Oil, a state owned oil firm, as their drivers complained of the strike affecting their livelihood.

“We don”t know why the strike has been called. Only the officials can tell us why they are on strike. We are not a part of this strike,” said Sant Singh, a petrol tanker driver.

Petrol pump owners in Ambala also expressed concern about the strike affecting fuel supply in the city.

According to Ravinder Singh Dhillon, a petrol pump owner, they would run dry if the strike continues for another two or three days.

According to the Association of Senior Technical Officers, the strike
involves 55,000 employees from companies such as Indian Oil Corporation (IOC)that is into refinery and vending, Oil and Natural Gas Corporation (ONGC) engaged in exploration and its refining subsidiary Mangalore Refinery and Petrochemicals Limited. (ANI)
