Raina promises a field day

To say that being in-charge of the Indian team is one of the most daunting propositions in world cricket may not quite seem like overstating the fact. Of the many responsibilities an Indian cricket captain is faced with, it is often the relentless and hard-to-please media back home, which proves to be a stiffer and unforgiving challenge than any opposition he comes across on the field.

At least, Suresh Raina, who will become the 20 th ODI captain for India-and the first from Uttar Pradesh- in Zimbabwe, passed his first test satisfactorily, displaying a calm exterior during his first-ever pre-tour press conference in Mumbai on Tuesday evening.

When asked-on a number of occasions-if regular Indian captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni-who also leads Chennai Super Kings, the IPL franchise that Raina represents-had passed down any tips, the 24-year-old left-hander only revealed that he was asked to keep things simple. And while it remains to be seen whether Raina does heed his skipper’s advice when it comes to the action in Zimbabwe or not, he did stick to it during the press-briefing by keeping his responses ‘simple’ and cliched.

“It is a great opportunity, and I am looking forward to the challenge,” got reiterated by Raina at least four times the number of international games that his young pace-attack has managed between them for India.

And his opinions remained the same regarding both his personal goals as well as that of his young team.

Getting the opportunity at such a young age though did come as a pleasant surprise, believed Raina, and he expected his team to live up to their billing of the second-best ODI team in the world. “It was always a dream but it is a great responsibility. The seniors don’t often take breaks from the game and now that they have, it is up to the bench-strength to rise and do well. A good performance here will go a long way in enhancing their future opportunities,” he explained.

While almost the entire Indian team faced the wrath of the media following their disappointing exit from the World T20, Raina was the only one left unscathed. After all he was the only Indian batsman to have totaled three-figures in the tournament, finishing with over 200 runs, including a century against South Africa. He believed that it was up to the likes of Rohit Sharma, Yusuf Pathan, Murali Vijay and Virat Kohli to rise to the occasion and make the most of the seniors’ absence.

“They have all scored a lot of runs in the IPL and in domestic cricket but the onus is on them to replicate that form for India now,” said Raina.

Of the many criticisms that were stacked against the Indian team, it was their poor fielding that came under the scanner the most. But Raina believed his young team would prove a more athletic unit in the field. “We will run harder and are fitter. And if we score a total of 240-250, we will make it look like a 280+ target with our fielding,” said the new Indian captain. With conditions expected to assist fast bowling, Raina believed his team’s strength would be his pace-bowling department led by the inexperienced lot of Umesh Yadav, Vinay Kumar, Pankaj Singh and Ashok Dinda. “We have bowlers like Umesh who have pace and can trouble the opposition batsmen in those conditions,” he said.

Unlike Dhoni or most of his predecessors, Raina at least signed off on an optimistic note rather than sticking to a well-rehearsed diplomatic tone, insisting that there were no weaknesses in his side and that returning with the trophy was his sole objective as an Indian captain.

NZ Cricket to get a million dollars from IPL franchises

Wellington, May 5 (ANI): New Zealand cricket will get a million dollars if Central Districts’ three Indian Premier League players are wanted by their franchises for Champions League in South Africa.

Ross Taylor (Royal Challengers Bangalore), Jacob Oram (Chennai Super Kings) and Graham Napier (Mumbai Indians) are eligible to play for both their IPL teams and New Zealand representatives Central Districts, but a clause in the IPL players’ contracts means the Indians get the first choice.

In return, the IPL teams would have to pay NZC 342,000 New Zealand dollars per player as compensation.

Taylor is a regular for Bangalore and is almost certain to be protected in their squad, The Dominion Post reports.

He has also qualified for Victoria and may do the same with English county Durham but has said that he will play for Central Districts in the Champions League if not required by Bangalore.

Oram was injured and didn”t play a match for IPL winners Chennai but his all-round qualities make him a valuable performer when in form.

“If his home team in England qualify, then that’s where the payment would be made,” Players Association boss Heath Mills said.

If Essex didn’t qualify and Mumbai want Napier, Mills said he would doubt if Central would profit, Stuff.co.nz reports.

Mills is negotiating a new collective bargaining agreement with NZC and it had not yet been decided how Champions League money would be split up between the provinces. (ANI)

We cannot take Aghanistan lightly: Dhoni

Gros Islet, April 29 (IANS) India might have been termed the favourites to win World Twenty20 but their captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni is not taking their opening match against debutants Afghanistan lightly.

The World Twenty20 kicks off here Friday and Afghanistan team, with their country’s turbulent past, has generated quite an interest here. The team notched up a five-wicket win against Ireland Tuesday and Dhoni knows his boys cannnot afford to be complacent in a format where every team has a chance to create an upset.

‘I would not consider our opening match against Afghanistan as a practice game,’ Dhoni said in St.Lucia.

‘I don’t take my opponents lightly. At the end of the day you have to win whichever team you play. I don’t know much about them. It is good in a way because if we know too much about a side, then you are thinking too much about them. However, our preparation will remain the same as if you are playing the best opponent in world cricket.’

‘At the end of the day, you are representing India and you have to be at your best when you turn up on the field.’

India will be without Virender Sehwag, out due to a shoulder injury, but Dhoni is not mulling on the absence of their star opener. Sehwag has been replaced by Dhoni’s Chennai Super Kings teammate Murali Vijay and the captain is hoping that he will live up to the expectations.

‘It (injury) is part and parcel of cricket. Players get injured but at the end of the day we have best possible replacements. We just hope that we won’t miss them on the field and people who have come as replacements would step up to the occasion and perform.’

Dhoni also backed an out-of-form Yuvraj Singh and said it’s just a matter of time that the Punjab player will return to his big hitting ways.

‘He (Yuvraj) bats at number four and he can easily play the big shots. There aren’t enough grounds in the world that are big enough for him not to clear,’ Dhoni said.

‘These big hitters have a big impact on the game. Somebody like Kieron Pollard or (Andrew) Symonds are the kind of players who can take the game away from the opponents in three or four overs. It is a big stage for him and, as we have seen of him, he loves challenges.’

The Indian captain said his team is keyed up for the challenge here.

‘Right now we are keen to play the games here (St Lucia). We are not looking too far. It is the not first time that we are touring the West Indies. So we know what the conditions would be like and are mentally prepared for it,’ Dhoni said.

‘We have a couple of days before we play the first game. It is important to get the most out of it. We have to adapt to the conditions here and be prepared for the matches ahead,’ Dhoni said.

India,Pakistan favourites to win World T20: Warne

Melbourne, April 29 (IANS) Former Australia spin wizard Shane Warne Thursday tipped India and Pakistan as favourites to win the World Twenty20 which begins Friday in the Caribbeans.

Warne, who just returned from India after his stint in the Indian Premier League (IPL), was quite impressed with the performance of Indian captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni, who tops his list of best five Twenty20 players.

Dhoni was also the captain of Chennai Super Kings who claimed this year’s IPL title.

‘M.S. Dhoni is a very good captain, but Virender Sehwag is a massive loss with his shoulder problem,’ Warne was quoted as saying in the Herald Sun.

‘India are the favourites because their players play so much in the IPL. And Pakistan because the format suits them. But Australia is playing more of it and understanding the game a lot better.’

‘However, there is no obvious standout team and the nature of Twenty20 cricket is that most teams will have a chance. It will probably come down to captaincy and tactics.’

Warne predicts a run-fest at the Caribbeans given the small ground there.

‘Lots of runs, players will be playing on some very small grounds. Expect combined totals of more than 400 on a regular basis,’ he said.

Supreme Court dismisses charges against actress Khusboo

New Delhi, Apr 28 (ANI): The Supreme Court on Wednesday dismissed all cases registered against South Indian film actress and activist Khusboo for her alleged remarks on pre-marital sex.

The apex court quashed all 22 cases registered against her.

Khusboo described the judgement as a major relief for her.

“I am relieved and relaxed after hearing the verdict,” said Khusboo.

“I believe in my words, and the verdict has reaffirmed my belief,” she added.

The Tamil actress had given an interview in 2005 mentioning that men cannot expect their brides to be virgins and also suggested that girls should take protective measures before engaging in pre-marital sex.

The actress was accused of defaming Tamil womanhood and chastity.

She moved the Madras High Court to quash the criminal complaints against her.

The court, however, rejected her plea, but directed that all the 22 complaints against Khushboo be transferred to the chief metropolitan magistrate in Chennai to facilitate speedy disposal.

In 2008, Khushboo had appealed against the High Court”s order in the Supreme Court. (ANI)

Oz skipper awaits arrival of three key players for T20 World Cup

Sydney, Apr 26 (ANI): Skipper Michael Clarke is waiting for the arrival of three key Australian players, which is hampering the team’s preparations for the Twenty20 World Cup in the Caribbean.

Australia is set to play warm-up games in St Lucia against Zimbabwe on Tuesday and against the Windward Islands on Thursday.

Vice-captain Cameron White and opening bowler Shaun Tait are yet to arrive after completing commitments in the Indian Premier League.

Mike Hussey’s team the Chennai Super Kings won the IPL final in Mumbai on Sunday, although he wasn’t named in the playing 11.

“Michael Hussey is still not here. Shaun Tait is due to arrive today and Cameron White is on his way as well. Hopefully they get here quickly,” The Sydney Morning Herald quoted Clarke, as saying.

“Those guys will be a little bit jetlagged from their flights but we’re pretty fortunate they’ve played a bit of cricket as well. We need to use both practice games to build momentum but also to give guys who haven’t played in the IPL a chance to get some cricket under their belt,” he said.

Australia has been drawn in Group A to face world champions Pakistan on Sunday in St Lucia and Bangladesh in Barbados on May 5.

Australia, who made a first-round exit at the 2009 World T20 in England, are unseeded in the 12-team event to be played over 17 days, with the final in Barbados on May 16. (ANI)
