Cheers And Tears As Jade Cortege Passes By

Hundreds of people have turned out to watch reality TV star Jade Goody’s funeral procession through the streets of south east London. Skip related content

Her grandparents looked on as her plain white coffin was carried from F A Albin and Son in Bermondsey and placed in a vintage Rolls Royce hearse.

Sky News Entertainment correspondent Matt Smith, at the scene, said Jade was very close to her grandparents.

“They were the people she most identified with,” he said.

Earlier flowers were laid in the street outside the funeral directors, many with warm tributes to Jade.

A staff member at F A Albin said they had “never known anything like it, not in 20 years”.

Police stopped traffic as the cortege made its way through Bermondsey, where Jade grew up, in wet, gloomy conditions.

Many well-wishers tossed flowers into the hearse as it passed by. Others stood applauding in the rain.

The funeral cortege is tracing the geography of Jade’s life as it makes its way to St John The Baptist Church in Buckhurst Hill, Essex.

As it travelled through Bermondsey it stopped at The Blue Market where Jade’s family used to have a stall.

Funeral director Barry Albin-Dyer told the crowd: “I knew you’d be like this. I knew you’d come and say goodbye like this. So from everyone in Bermondsey, goodbye.”

He then released a single white dove which was greeted by loud cheering and applause.

Flowers were collected from well-wishers and some were placed on top of the coffin.

The vicar of St James’s Church, Rev Stewart Hartley, said a prayer before leading the crowd in “three cheers for Jade”.

The cortege went on to pass through the council estate where she grew up.

After picking up Jade’s mother Jackiey, the cortege made its way over Tower Bridge, through East London and on to the star’s former home in Upshire, Essex.

Jade’s sons Bobby and Freddie are not expected to attend the funeral.

They are believed to have gone to Australia with their father Jeff Brazier.

Publicist Max Clifford, who represented Jade, said the funeral would be “a very Jade Goody event”.

Jade died at home aged 27 on March 22 after losing a battle with cervical cancer.

Mr Clifford said he and her husband Jack Tweed, 21, would be among people paying tribute at the service.

“I’m sure it will be a very emotional celebration and tribute to a very special young lady,” said Mr Clifford.

“I think Jade would want people to be laughing and crying and I’m sure they will be.”

Church officials were preparing to erect crash barriers in anticipation of huge crowds.

TV hosts Richard and Judy, the Sugababes, Jamelia and Kerry Katona are expected to be among 300 mourners inside the church.

The service will be beamed onto giant screens outside. Jade will be buried at a private service nearby.

Jade’s friend Kevin Adams, one of her bridesmaids and a school friend are also due to make tributes.

Cruise cheers on ex-wife’s hubby Urban during race car convention gig

Washington, February 17 (ANI): Hollywood star Tom Cruise apparently does not have any hard feelings towards his ex-wife Nicole Kidman’s present husband Keith Urban, for he applauded a performance the country singer gave at a race car convention on Sunday.

Cruise and his adopted son Connor, 14, cheered on Urban as he played a set before the kick-off of the Daytona 500 car race in Florida.

Obama says doing a second term depends on US economy turnaround

Fort Myers (Florida, US), Feb. 11 (ANI): Three weeks after being sworn in, President Barack Obama has acknowledged in plain terms that his prospects for winning a second term will depend on whether he can revive the US economy.

“I’m not going to make any excuses. If stuff hasn’t worked, if people don’t feel like I’ve led the country in the right direction then you’ll have a new president,” Obama told a town hall meeting here on Tuesday.

“But I do think the American people understand that these are some, really big tough problems and it’s going to take some time for us to get ourselves out,” he said, after conceding his political fate was on the line.

“I have great faith in the American people and their faith and wisdom.”

Obama’s appearance on Florida’s Gulf Coast came as the Senate approved the 838 billion dollar stimulus package.

Obama announced the measure had passed, repeating “that’s good news” four times consecutively, and prompted standing applause from a friendly audience in the hard-hit city, which suffered one of the nation’s worst foreclosure rates last year.

Speaking before an animated crowd of about 1,500 that greeted him with his “Yes We Can” campaign chant, Obama won himself perhaps more political leeway than he’ll ultimately enjoy.

“Americans I’ve met understand that even with this plan our economy will likely be measured in years, not weeks or months,” he assured.

At this, somebody in the crowd yelled “eight’ and the audience burst out in cheers in anticipation of the new president serving two full terms.

Obama, striding across a stage behind twin signs reading “Making America Work,” sought to buy himself some time by lavishing praise on the citizenry.

“You’ve got common sense, you understand that it took us a long time to get into this fix, we’re not going to get out of it over night,” he said.

“But what you don’t have patience for is just listening to a bunch of bickering in Washington with nothing getting done.”

To isolate the congressional Republicans who have almost unanimously opposed his stimulus package so far, Obama held up his introducer at the town hall: Florida’s Republican Governor Charlie Crist.

Crist did his part, urging passage of the stimulus package and, as is his signature, touting the merit of doing so without regard to party.

And Obama returned the favor.

“Governor Crist shares my conviction that creating jobs and turning this economy around is a mission that transcends party. And when the town is burning, you don’t check party labels. Everybody needs to grab a hose, and that’s what Charlie Crist is doing right here today,” he said. (ANI)

George Clooney feared ER would never be released

Washington, Jan 28 (ANI): American actor George Clooney has revealed that there was a time when he feared that his doc-drama ER would never be released.

Clooney, 47, recalled the incident while at the Reel Journalism Festival, held at Washington, D.C.’s Newseum on January 26, where he stated that network bosses had thought the drama was not going to get much credit as it dealt with the average viewers.

“I was at a screening when the pilot of ER was screened, and the heads of the network looked at Les Moonves, the head of Warner Bros., and said, ‘What the hell did you do with our 2.5 million dollars?’” People magazine quoted him as saying.

“They thought it was a flop. [Moonves] kept saying, ‘Do you like it?’ They said, ‘It doesn’t matter if we like it. It’s too fast, the audience can’t keep up’.

“It ended up getting a prime time spot. We were averaging 40 million people a week,” Clooney stated.

He added: “You look at shows over the years that have been consistently major hits, like M.A.S.H, Cheers, Seinfeld, NYPD Blues, they’re well written, they’re smart, they survive.” (ANI)

Obama’s dine outs may spark competition among restaurants

Washington, January 18 (ANI): President-elect Barack Obama may spark competition among Washington restaurants after generating tremendous publicity for his dining outlets.

The first African-American to be the president of the United States had dined at two restaurants within one week and had also sent the sales soaring by visiting small vendors and gift shops in the capital.

The 47-year-old was recently received with cheers and applause at the landmark Ben’s Chili Bowl as he had lunch with District Mayor Adrian Fenty.

Similarly, Obama, along with 12 others, were greeted with a great reception to at Equinox where he celebrated his wife’s 45th birthday.

And now, Amanda McClements, a food writer and author of the blog metrocueran.com, said that other restaurants may be sweating it out to have the honour of serving their soon-to-be president.

“I think there’s certainly going to be invitations handed out to the president and the first lady. Especially restaurants right by the White House,” Fox News quoted her as saying.

“We hope with Obama hitting these places, there will be renewed interest” in the DC dining scene,” she added. (ANI)
