Intensified search operations for missing Andhra CM resume

Hyderabad/New Delhi, Sep.3 (ANI): Search operations for missing Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy resumed at first light on Thursday morning.

State Government sources said that they have narrowed down the search to a 20-square kilometer radius in the Nallamalla Forest Range where they believe the seven-seat Bell helicopter carrying the chief minister may have gone down on Wednesday at around 9.30 a.m.eddy’s chopper went missing while he was on his way from Kurnool to Chittoor.

He is accompanied by his Principal Secretary S Subramanyam and Chief Security Officer A S C Wesley. There were two pilots also on board the twin-engined Bell 430 helicopter that lost contact with Air Traffic Control at the Begumpet Airport in Hyderabad when it was headed for Chittoor district, about 600 kilometres from Hyderabad.

Indian Space Research Organisation chief G. Madhavan Nair and his team are monitoring a low flying remote sensing plane. Satellite images are being used to try and trace the place. So far, 41 images have been taken but none of them have revealed any information about the chief minister’s whereabouts.

As of now the Indian Government has said that it has not requested the United States for help in the matter, but has confirmed that the unmanned vehicle that is presently deployed in the north eastern part of the country is being kept on standby.

The Army, Indian Air Force (IAF), Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) personnel, Andhra Police Greyhound commandos along with local police and district officials has entered the Nallamalla Forests to launch the massive search and rescue operation for Reddy.

About 250 Army personnel with night vision devices have joined the search operations.

“We have deployed two columns and one Ghatak (jungle warfare specialist) platoon in the area for searching the Chief Minister. Our troops are equipped with night vision devices such as goggles and hand held thermal imagers,” Army officials said.

Congress president Sonia Gandhi is expected to arrive in Hyderabad shortly to be with Reddy’s anguished family members and to get a hands on assessment of the search operation.

She has already sent Union Law Minister and Congress general secretary in charge of Andhra Pradesh affairs Veerappa Moily and Union Minister of State in the Prime Minister’s Office Prithviraj Chauhan to the city to monitor developments. Chauhan told press persons that the State and Central Governments are sparing no efforts to search for the chief minister.

Meanwhile, National Security Advisor M.K. Narayanan has said that while both the state and central governments are extremely concerned and worried about the missing chief minister, all available resources are being deployed for the search.

He said Army and Air Force helicopters have been conducting a search of the region. He also confirmed that two fixed-wing aircraft with synthetic aperture radar capabilities have been pressed into service.

Forces on the ground are also on the lookout for the missing helicopter and its individuals. arayanan said that the lack of communication is a major problem and also ruled out the probability of a Naxal strike.

“I don’t think the Naxals have the capability to bring down a helicopter,” he said.

“There is no question about calling off the search till we discover what happened there. We are hopeful we will find the Chief Minister, his chief secretary and PSO without serious injuries,” he added. (ANI)

Natural breeding of alligators in Chambal river delights people

Chambal (Uttar Pradesh), June 27 (ANI): Natural breeding of Ghariyals or, the Indian alligators in Chambal river here has delighted residents and authorities, as it reflects a favourable sign for reptiles’ conservation.

Two years since a mysterious disease seriously affected the population of Ghariyals, the natural breeding of the reptiles has come as a ray of hope for conservationists and authorities here.

Many Ghariyals had been lost to the disease, more of these reptiles were released in the river by the Kukrail Gharial Rehabilitation Centre, situated in Lucknow.

Authorities are delighted that there are now many Ghariyal babies in the river but also concede the face that protecting them from the monsoons and diseases is going to be a challenge.

“The breeding that has happened is a good sign for their conservation. But the problem is to conserve the hatchlings and protect them from monsoons. Because it is seen in their breeding out of the population of the hatchlings that is seen, the survival percentage is less,” said Rajeev Chauhan, General Secretary of the Society for Conservation of Nature.

Meanwhile, local residents believe that though it is a favourable sign.

However, many of them allege that the authorities are careless and because of that the Ghariyals are hunted, and naturally their population decreases with time, despite good breeding.

“Officers here are careless and because of that many hunters come and hunt the Ghariyals, hence, they die. So the population decreases,” said a resident elderly man.

Various species of crocodiles and alligators are seriously endangered due to hunting and now largely from loss of habitat, particularly breeding sites.

The Ghariyals were on the verge of extinction in the 1970′s. But the Ghariyal rehabilitation project started by the government in 1975 had helped increase the population again.

Rivers Chambal, Girwa, Rapti and Narayani in the orbit of central and northern India are among the main habitats for crocodiles and alligators. By Brajesh Kr. Singh (ANI)

Shoe hurled at Indian premier during speech

New Delhi – A protestor threw a shoe at Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh during an election rally on Sunday, but it landed several feet short of where he was speaking. Singh was addressing the gathering in the western Gujarat state’s main Ahmedabad city and was momentarily distracted from his speech as a security personnel ran towards the spot where the shoe was lying.

The guard then kicked and later carried away the white sneaker which had landed about 20 feet away from the podium.

Singh continued his speech as the man, identified as Hitesh Chauhan, a city-based computer engineer in his mid-20s, was whisked away by security personnel.

Local news channels which broadcast images of the incident said Singh had forgiven the youth and asked police not to press charges against the man.

Police officials told the IANS news agency that Chauhan did not belong to any political group but were questioning him to determine the provocation or issue he wanted to protest about.

The NDTV network quoting police sources said Chauhan wanted to grab media publicity by doing so.

Shoe-throwing has become a preferred form of protest in the run-up to the month-long elections in India which began April 16.

This is the fourth occasion when shoes have been hurled at Indian political leaders in the past few weeks.

It all started on April 7, when a journalist lobbed a shoe at India’s Home Minister Palaniappan Chidambaram during a press briefing in national capital New Delhi.

Days later, a retired school principal threw footwear at Congress party candidate Navin Jindal during an election rally in the northern state of Haryana.

Subsequently, a slipper was thrown at Hindu nationalist Bharatiya Janata Party’s prime ministerial candidate LK Advani, by a former party worker.

Sunday’s incident was the latest in the series of shoe-attacks on political leaders – shoes have been hurled at former US president George W Bush and Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao. (dpa)

Raghavan panel reaches Himachal to probe ragging death

Shimla, April 9 (IANS) A three-member commitee of the Supreme Court Thursday reached Himachal Pradesh to probe the death of a first-year medical student last month allegedly due to ragging.

Aman Kachru, 19, died March 8, a few hours after being allegedly ragged by four final-year students of the Rajendra Prasad Medical College at Tanda town in Kangra district.

The magisterial inquiry as well as the police report pointed out that Kachru succumbed to his injuries caused during the ragging by the four senior students.

‘A three-member team of the Raghavan Committee this (Thursday) evening reached the medical college to investigate into the death of the first-year student,’ Anil Chauhan, the new principal of the medical college, told IANS on phone.

He said the committee members included A.K. Aggarwal, dean of the Maulana Azad Medical College in New Delhi, and Rajindra Prasad, principal of Ramjas College, Delhi.

‘They (the team) will study in detail ragging incidents in the college and the alleged negligence on the part of college authorities in treating the victim (Kachru),’ he said.

‘The team will remain here till Friday.’

The Raghavan panel will submit its report to the apex court before the next hearing in the case.

Earlier, a team of the Medical Council of India (MCI) had completed its probe and submitted it to the apex court.

The team had recorded the statements of doctors from various departments, staff of the college, Kachru’s friends and students.

State Principal Secretary (Health) Deepak Sanan said the government had initiated action on the report of the magisterial probe.

‘Show-cause notices have been issued to 40 persons, including two former principals of the college, in whose tenure ragging incidents had taken place from 2001 onwards. Their names cropped up in the magisterial inquiry report concerning the death of Kachru,’ he said.

They have been asked to file their replies by April 23, he said.

Former principal S. Shankayan was suspended on the directions of the apex court March 30.

A bench of Justice Arijit Pasayat and Justice Asok Kumar Ganguly ordered immediate suspension of Shankayan after the MCI and the Himachal Pradesh government, in their separate reports to the court, disclosed that he had ignored the incidents of ragging despite being informed about these by the security guards of the hostel.

Soon after Kachru’s death March 8, the state government divested him of the post of the college head, but let him continue as the head of the Department of Forensic Medicine in the college.

But infuriated over Shankayan’s inaction, the bench ordered his suspension, saying: ‘Don’t let him even enter the college premises.’

The bench observed that deaths and suicides by students ‘due to ragging is a national tragedy’.

Congress furious, BJP clueless over legislator’s cusswords, says will cross-check

Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) legislator Fatehsinh Chauhan’s cusswords on Congress president Sonia Gandhi has ruffled the state Congress. BJP leaders, meanwhile, have pleaded ignorance about the whole incident.

“It is BJP culture and the MLA is just following his leader Narendra Modi. Like leader, like follower…they have no control over their language. This is the characteristic of the BJP. It has percolated to the lower rung members as well,” said Himanshu Vyas, GPCC spokesperson. Other party leaders could not be contacted.

BJP spokesperson I K Jadeja expressed ignorance about the matter. “I will have it confirmed from our south Gujarat poll in-charge Bharatsinh Parmar and then give our official reaction on it,” Jadeja said.

Another spokesman, Vijay Rupani, also said he was not aware of it. Interestingly, senior BJP leader Jayanti Barot, when told that the matter was reported in newspapers and the district collector concerned had taken a serious view of this, said, “I am not aware of this. I don’t read newspapers.”

When Newsline tried to contact Chauhan on his cell phone, one Montu answered the call and said Chauhan had gone out of town to attend some social function and that he forgot his cell phone at home. Chauhan has reportedly made himself unavailable after the incident. A call on his landline numbers elicited a similar response.
