LeT admits giving 3-month terror training to failed Times Square bomber in PoK: Report

Ottawa, May 19 (ANI): In the latest and sensational twist to the botched Times Square bombing plot, a Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) commander has claimed that Faisal Shahzad, the confessed bomb plotter of Pakistani origin, had received terror training in one of the ‘jihad’ camps of the banned outfit in Pakistan occupied Kashmir (PoK).

A report in Maclean, Canada’s weekly current affairs magazine, cited an unnamed LeT commander as saying that Shahzad, during his visit to Pakistan in 2006, had visited the LeT’s main base of operations in Dulai, a village situated 25 kilometres away from Muzaffarabad, the capital of PoK.

“He was an eager recruit. Very intelligent but also very intense, and driven to make his mark for the sake of Islam,” the magazine quoted the LeT commander, as describing Shahzad.

The LeT commander, however, denied any direct involvement of his organisation with New York bombing plot.

“Shahzad came to us for training. He stayed with us for three months and we provided him with the basics. Then he went back to the U.S,” the commander claimed.

The terror commander added that following the training, Shazad was asked to return back to the US and directed not to contact the LeT, which carried out the ghastly Mumbai terror attacks in 2008, for at least six months.

“After six months, we tried to contact him, but we received no response, not from emails or by telephone. We thought, well, okay, so maybe he’s had a change of heart. We have thousands of recruits who come to us for training. It doesn’t affect us if one of them is lost,’ the magazine quoted the militant leader, as saying.

Recalling Shahzad’s attitude during his terror training, the LeT commander said one thing which was most noticeable in him was that he had a strong desire for glory.

“He wanted to do something big, not just die an anonymous martyr alongside hundreds of other martyrs. He wanted something international. He wanted to be famous. For us, that was dangerous. We don’t want attention brought to us, and we were worried that Shahzad’s personal agenda would get him captured and bring the spotlight on us,” the commander said. (ANI)

Eddie Murphy trying to mend relationship with ex Mel B?

New York, May 11 (ANI): Eddie Murphy is making efforts to get to know his daughter with ex-flame Melanie Brown, it has emerged.

“While promoting ”Shrek Forever After,” Eddie talked a lot about his kids,” the New York Daily News quoted a source, as saying.

“Ever since, he”s been making efforts with Mel to get to know their daughter.”

Murphy and Brown have feuded quite publicly since her pregnancy was revealed in 2006, with Murphy initially denying he was the dad.

Even though the actor has been repeatedly accused of wanting nothing to do with his child by the former Scary Spice, it seems he has had a change of heart lately.

The insider revealed Murphy hosted a party at his LA compound last week, and Brown, her hubby, Stephen Belafonte, and Angel, her 3-year-old daughter with Murphy, were present.

The snitch said: “They”ve both said some really nasty things about each other to the press.

“So needless to say, some guests were shocked.”

The informer added: “Eddie”s ex-wife Nicole helped them reconcile their issues, too.

“Angel is Eddie”s youngest child, and Nicole wanted her children to know her. That helped Eddie to come around and get past all the animosity he had toward Mel.

“All of the children were there for the party, and it appeared that they”re one big happy, blended family.” (ANI)

Genoa v AC Milan to be played behind closed doors

Genoa’s Serie A home match with AC Milan on Sunday will be played behind closed doors after local authorities had a late change of heart about possible violence.

Italy’s anti-hooligan body initially said Milan followers would be able to visit Genoa for the first time since a home fan was killed during trouble between the two sets of supporters 15 years ago.

However, Genoa’s website (www.genoacfc.it) said city officials had now decided to ban all fans following threats of potential violence from some supporters.

Larry King, wife need more time before divorce decision

London, May 7 (ANI): Larry King and his wife need extra time to decide if they want to legally part ways, and are hence postponing a possible divorce until next week.

The CNN anchorman and country singer Shawn Southwick both cited irreconcilable differences when they filed for divorce last month.

However, the couple apparently has had a change of heart after agreeing to undergo relationship counselling.

King”s lawyer Dennis Wasser confessed that the pair needed an extra two weeks to “discuss and resolve” their issues, but they have yet to reach a conclusion.

“The hold has been continued until the middle of next week. Stay tuned,” the Daily Express quoted Wasser as telling E! Online. (ANI)

New York mayor drops plans to remove 892 cops after Times Square plot

New York, May 6 (ANI): New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg has dropped plans to remove nearly 900 cops days after the failed Times Square car bombing.

Bloomberg”s executive budget for 2011, which he is announcing tomorrow, “won’t include a reduction in the number of police officers out on our streets keeping New York City safe,” the New York Post quoted his spokesman Stu Loeser, as saying.

The change-of-heart comes less than a week after NYPD cops discovered terrorist Faisal Shahzad”s smoldering, explosives-laden Nissan Pathfinder in Times Square on Saturday.

It was city detectives who helped the FBI wrap up the case and arrest Shahzad within 54 hours.
The reprieve came as several developments emerged in the terror investigation.

Bloomberg was preparing to cut 892 NYPD jobs through attrition to save 55 million dollars in related costs.

Officials yesterday said higher-than-anticipated tax revenues were allowing Bloomberg to reverse that decision and keep the police force intact at about 35,000.

As of March, revenues were running about 225 million dollars ahead of expectations. The grim early budget was released in January.

The initial plan was to have the cops retire and not be replaced. With the increased funding, the plan is for the NYPD to have a new class at the Police Academy and hire close to 1,000 rookies.

The police have welcomed Bloomberg’s decision. (ANI)

Coast denies Palmer’s pulling the pin

Gold Coast United says there is no indication the A-League club is about to lose the backing of billionaire owner Clive Palmer.

Fairfax newspapers on Friday reported United owner Palmer was withdrawing his funding of the club, which finished third in its inaugural season earlier this year.

It is understood Football Federation Australia (FFA), which has endured a testy relationship with billionaire Palmer, has little interest in taking over and the competition would remain a 10-team league with the inclusion of newcomers Melbourne Heart.

The report said the iron ore baron on Tuesday sent “written confirmation that he would stop funding the club beyond the end of next week”.

Gold Coast chief executive Clive Mensink, a friend and relative of Palmer, was surprised by the report and was adamant Gold Coast would continue on as part of an 11-team competition in 2010-11.

But he did indicate Palmer, who is involved in a $3 billion float of his business holdings, may be open to sharing or off-loading the club’s licence.

“It’s a bit of a surprise but at the end of the day there are parties interested in the club and if that is the case we’re happy to have a chat – commercially you would be mad not to,” Mensink said.

“(Palmer) says there may be people involved in his overseas dealings that may be tying in with the club as well but there is nothing there at the moment.”

Mike Mulvey, who also coaches the club’s National Youth League team, says Palmer has given no indication of a change of heart.

“Clive Palmer has been a great supporter of the club,” he said.

“Just when we played the Youth League grand final [at Docklands] two weeks ago, he flew 50 of our families and supporters and friends to the game so they could watch it.

“That’s a sign of commitment to me.

“I am sure that Mr Palmer only wants what is best for Gold Coast United and FFA wants what is best for the game.

“When you have those situations you are always going to get agreements [and] disagreements from time to time, but I am sure it is businesses as usual.”

A Gold Coast United spokesman says the club is finalising a statement rejecting the media report.

Mulvey said he and head coach Miron Bleiberg are making plans for next season.

“Miron has been scouting around having a look for a couple of players in positions we are looking at, and we are also discussing some of the youth boys who had a very successful year last year,” he said.

“Eight of those [guys] will be turning up for the first team training on May 3 so I think you can say planning’s well underway from a coaching perspective.

“Miron and I are looking, with regard to both teams, very positively towards the future.”

United goalkeeper Scott Higgins was surprised on Friday morning to receive dozens of text messages asking about the club’s demise.

Higgins said Palmer had been with the players a month ago when United’s youth team won their grand final in Melbourne.

“I don’t know if there is any truth in it,” Higgins told Gold-FM radio.

“He was putting in plans for the future of Gold Coast United and was getting ideas off players.”

Factbox: Lawmakers facing heat over healthcare

(Reuters) – With President Barack Obama’s healthcare overhaul now the law of the land, lawmakers from both parties have left Washington for a two-week spring recess, where they will face constituents for the first time since its passage.

Barack Obama | Healthcare Reform

Here are a few members of Congress who are considered vulnerable in November elections and could face pressure in their home districts over their vote on the bill.

* SENATE MAJORITY LEADER HARRY REID

The Nevada Democrat, who spent a year championing the healthcare bill and faces a tough fight for reelection to a fifth term, returned home in the midst of a conservative Tea Party activists rally aimed at drumming him out of office.

In Nevada, a firmly red state where Obama’s healthcare revamp has been unpopular, Reid has not scheduled any events to discuss the bill, although his staff says he’s not avoiding the topic and that it has come up in other forums.

* REPRESENTATIVE BART STUPAK

Stupak led a coalition of anti-abortion Democrats who threatened to kill healthcare reform until party leaders agreed that Obama would issue an executive order that the bill would not alter current law preventing federal funding for abortion.

Back home in Michigan, Stupak, who is running for re-election in 2010, has come under fire for his change of heart. He has issued a statement calling Obama’s executive order an “ironclad commitment” but has not scheduled any events to discuss the bill.

* SENATOR JOHN MCCAIN

The Republican who lost to Obama in the 2008 presidential race voted against the healthcare initiative and, facing potentially the stiffest re-election challenge of his long career in the Senate, returned to Arizona, his vice presidential running mate Sarah Palin at his side, vowing to repeal it.

* REPRESENTATIVE JOHN BOCCIERI

The first-term Ohio Democrat is considered vulnerable as he runs for reelection and may be hedging his bets on health care. On two occasions has said that “it was a choice of voting for a bad bill or making no change.”

And in a recent release Boccieri said: “The bill may not be perfect but it strikes the proper balance.”

Health plan concerns over aged care beds

Victorian Premier John Brumby says yesterday’s federal healthcare debate did little to ease his concerns about a Commonwealth takeover of hospital funding.

State premiers and chief ministers took part in a phone hook-up last night to discuss the proposed reforms.

Mr Brumby says there are still more than 40 “unanswered questions” regarding the federal plan, including the provision of aged care beds.

“We have got thousands of people who can’t get beds in aged care facilities, and many of them are in beds in hospitals when they should be in aged care facilities,” he said.

“So what we would want is some aged care reform. We need to look at that in the context of the hospital reform package as well.”

Earlier, Victorian Health Minister Daniel Andrews told AM that he welcomed the Prime Minister’s change of heart on block funding for small country hospitals.

“I’d be hopeful that following the announcements made by the Prime Minister that there’ll be no need to change those unique arrangements,” he said.

He reiterated the main thing Victoria wanted was more money to treat more patients now.

US undecided on offering India like nuclear deal to Pak

Islamabad, Mar.23 (ANI): Amid speculations that the US might offer Pakistan a civil nuclear deal similar to India during the upcoming strategic dialogue on March 24, the US embassy in Islamabad has rejected such reports, saying there are no negotiations on between the two countries on the issue.

“The US has not entered negotiations on a civil nuclear agreement with Pakistan. The United States is committed to helping Pakistan address its real and growing energy needs, and we look forward to cooperating with Pakistan in ways that are compatible with Pakistan’s economic, environmental and security needs and with US international commitments and policies,” a US Embassy spokesman told a private television channel.

Reports regarding the Obama Administration offering a India-like nuclear deal to Islamabad gained momentum after US Ambassador to Pakistan, in a interview with a newspaper, described the March 24 talks as “working level talks”, and hinted a change of heart on part of Washington.

“We are beginning to have a discussion with the Pakistan Government on the country’s desire to tap nuclear energy,” Patterson had said.

“Earlier on, non-proliferation concerns were quite severe. I think we are beginning to pass those and this is a scenario that we are going to explore,” she added.

India has already expressed concerns over reports regarding the White House’ overtures to Pakistan.

“America needs to take a holistic view on the US-Pak nuclear deal. The US should consider Pakistan’s track record before any deal,” External Affairs Minister SM Krishna had said referring to the history of Pakistan’s nuclear proliferation. (ANI)

Woody Allen might drop ‘risky’ Carla Bruni from his film

London, Mar 19 (ANI): After finally getting Carla Bruni’s nod to act in his film, Woody Allen is now considering leaving the French First Lady for his next flick.

The legendary director, 74, last year convinced the wife of French President Nicolas Sarkozy to take a role in ‘You Will Meet A Tall Dark Stranger’ after hailing her as “wonderful”.

But now, it seems Allen has had a change of heart, and he has admitted that he might drop the 42-year-old supermodel-turned-singer because of the “risk” of her duties as France’s First Lady interfering with filming, due to start in Paris this year.

The news comes a week after a frenzy of rumours that both she and Sarkozy were having affairs.

According to reports, she had been seeing a pop star, Benjamin Biolay, and that he was romancing French junior minister Chantal Jouanno.

“Carla Bruni is not a woman who earns her living as an actress. She is a First Lady. She could be taken away at any moment by other duties, like a political crisis or an important event. I have to take account of the risks that there could be, and hiring her is far from certain,” the Daily Express quoted Woody as saying on Swiss TV this week. (ANI)

Capello to urge Bridge to reconsider decision to quit

London, Mar 5(ANI): England manager Fabio Capello is determined to talk defender Wayne Bridge out of international retirement and take him to this summer’s World Cup in South Africa.

Capello still believes Bridge is the best left-back cover for injured Ashley Cole.

According to reports, he is refusing to take no for an answer after Bridge withdrew from his squad in the wake of the John Terry scandal that involved the Manchester City full back’s former girlfriend, Vanessa Perroncel.

While the Italian was fairly happy with Leighton Baines against Egypt, he remains desperate to see Bridge and Cole as his left backs in South Africa.

Capello will maintain contact with Bridge, either directly or through members of his staff, in the hope that the player has a change of heart and decides he can deal with sharing a hotel with Terry for up to seven weeks.

“Fabio has not given up on Wayne Bridge,” The Sun quoted an England insider, as saying.

“Unless Bridge categorically insists he will not go to the World Cup, the management will keep monitoring the situation,” the insider added. (ANI)

David Beckham, Cheryl Cole best role models for Brit kids

London, Sept 16 (ANI): Soccer idol David Beckham and singer Cheryl Cole are the best role models for children, say parents in a new UK survey.

The study conducted by The Children’s Society showed that almost two-thirds of adults believe school-age children do not have anyone to look up to today.

Nearly 55 per cent of the adults questioned said that Becks sets best example for children, compared to 18 pct who thought the contrary.

The second spot went to singer Cheryl Cole, with 40 per cent rating her positively, compared to 27 per cent who saw her as a bad role model after her conviction in 2003 nightclub assault case.

However, popular cartoon character Homer Simpson was voted the worst role model.

When it comes to the world of politics David Cameron is seen the best role model. A fifth saw Gordon Brown as a positive role model, while 16 per cent said the same about Nick Clegg.

Of the 2000 adults surveyed one in seven said children today looked up to their fathers.

About 32 per cent said they used to consider their mother a role model, and 30 per cent believe that children today also look up to their mothers for inspiration.

Just five per cent of adults said they think children look up to their grandparents.

“This poll reflects our concerns that many children are living without positive role models,” the Telegraph quoted Rashid Iqbal, director of The Children’s Society’s National Mentoring Initiative, as saying.

“If children are not looking up to adults this is not the children’s fault.

“Both parents and society at large have a responsibility to enact a change of heart in our society and actually live by the values that they espouse and be strong and positive role models, providing continuity and support to a child or young person’s life.

“At the moment this seems more aspiration than reality. Adults have a collective responsibility to make childhood better for all children,” Iqbal added. (ANI)

Oil, trade was big part of Lockerbie bombers release deal, admits Straw

London, Sep 5 (ANI): Britain’s Justice secretary Jack Straw has admitted for the first time that trade and oil deals with Libya played a very big part in the handling of the Lockerbie bomber’s case.

He said trade was a major influence on his decision to include Abdelbaset Al Megrahi in a prisoner transfer agreement with Libya signed two years ago, just as BP was seeking a multi-billion pound deal there.

In January 2008, Libya ratified a $900 million (£551 million) oil deal with BP.

When asked in the interview if trade and BP were factors, Straw admits: “Yes, (it was) a very big part of that. I’m unapologetic about that… Libya was a rogue state.

“We wanted to bring it back into the fold. And yes, that included trade because trade is an essential part of it and subsequently there was the BP deal.”

The admission directly contradicts Prime Minister Gordon Brown’s insistence only days ago that oil deals were not a factor in Megrahi’s release, The Telegraph reports.

Straw also suggested that Kenny MacAskill, the Scottish Justice Minister, released the terminally ill bomber on compassionate grounds earlier than the British Government would have done.

Brown has been accused of putting Britain’s trade interests before justice for the Lockerbie victims.

Megrahi, who is suffering from prostate cancer, was freed last month by Scotland on compassionate grounds after it was said he was only months from death. Last night it emerged he has been moved out of intensive care.

Straw also claims that Brown had nothing to do with his change of heart over the prisoner transfer agreement, adding: “I certainly didn’t talk to the PM. There is no paper trail to suggest he was involved at all.”

A spokesman for BP said the company had raised concerns with the Government about the slow progress in concluding the PTA, but denied mentioning Megrahi. (ANI)

Has Barbra Streisand seen off ex-lover Jon Peters’ ‘kiss and tell’?

London, May 24 (ANI): American singer-actress Barbra Streisand is believed to have seen off an ex-lover who planned to publish a “kiss and tell”.

Hollywood producer Jon Peters, who made a deal with HarperCollins regarding his memoirs earlier this month, has had a change of heart now.

The deal was said to be worth 490,000 pounds.

“I must decline your current kind and generous offer to publish my autobiography. Circumstances far beyond my imagination have caused me to remove the project from the marketplace at this ime. “Somehow this proposal has become a kind of holy grail of gossip, and I have become Hollywood’s ‘Man Who Knows Too Much,’” the Telegraph quoted him as having written to Michael Morrison, of the publishers Peters adds: “I have been besieged by potential lawsuits and threatened litigation by some of the most important figures in the world of show business. What’s worse… is the fact that I consider all these people my friends.” (ANI)

New Iraq ‘prisoner abuse’ photographs surface in Australia

Washington, May 15 (ANI): Graphic photographs of alleged prisoner abuse in Iraq have surfaced in spite of the Obama administration trying its level best to halt its release.

The images emerged from Australia yesterday where they were originally obtained by the channel SBS in 2006 in the wake of the Abu Ghraib scandal.

The shocking images of inmates in Iraq and Afghanistan were published just a day after Obama announced plans for a legal battle stop them ever being seen.

According to The Telegraph, one picture showed a prisoner hung up upside down while another showed a naked man smeared in excrement standing in a corridor with a guard standing menacingly in front of him. Another prisoner is handcuffed to the window frame of his cell with underpants pulled over his head.

Others show military guards threatening to sexually assault a detainee with a broomstick and hooded prisoners on transport planes with Playboy magazines opened to pictures of nude women on their laps.

The president’s change of heart brought bitter criticism from the left wingers and the American Civil Liberties Union, which had brought a freedom of information case against the US government applying to see the pictures.

“It is true that these photos would be disturbing. The day we are no longer disturbed by such repugnant acts would be a sad one,” said Anthony Romero, executive director.

The White House legal team was yesterday preparing for a June 9 deadline to present its case that it would be against the interests of national security to make the pictures public. (ANI)

Australia faces sanctions by refusing to play in India

Sydney – Multiple Davis Cup champion Australia faces unprecedented sanctions including a temporary ban from the competition after refusing Saturday to send a team into what it considers a danger zone. Australia declared Saturday it would boycott next month’s Davis Cup tie against India in Chennai over security concerns after the London-based International Tennis Federation (ITF) rejected its request for a neutral venue like Singapore.

The ITF insisted the May 8-10 matches go ahead, warning Tennis Australia (TA) of sanctions if its team stayed home.

TA head Geoff Pollard said it was “unreasonable” to expect the team to play in India during elections.

“We asked for the tie to be moved because we have major security concerns for the players, particularly during the election,” Pollard said. “The ITF decision has left us with no other option – we cannot send the team. It is extremely disappointing.”

Davis Cup captain John Fitzgerald also criticized the ITF, saying “some thought must be given to the players’ safety.”

“I believe they say the [Indian] election is not a cause for concern, and that an ATP tournament is held in January shows it is safe to play in Chennai,” Fitzgerald said.

“So what about the fact that dozens of people are being killed along the campaign trail of the election? A train was hijacked this week, but that does not alter their thoughts?

“The ATP event involved no national teams and was held three months prior to the election. This decision makes no sense. We have worked so hard to get back in to World Group contention, to have it snatched away like this is gut-wrenching,” he said.

Pollard demanded a security cordon for his players, “reasonably close to what you would give to a head of state.”

Australia said its team, led by Lleyton Hewitt, is disappointed and is hoping for a change of heart from the IFT.

Australian sports teams have a reputation for being easily spooked by security concerns.

Big Brother bosses to dedicate show to Jade Goody

London, May 1 (ANI): After their initial decision to not do a memorial show on late Brit celebrity Jade Goody, Big Brother bosses have now decided to hold an emotional tribute to her this summer.

Goody had passed away in March following a battle with cervical cancer, and after the amazing public outpouring of emotion over her death, bosses at Channel 4 have decided to make a one-off show focusing on her.

A senior source has leaked details of the show, which will be a “celebration of her life rather than a sad look backwards”.

“We weren’t going to do a dedicated show on Jade because she had only just died and everyone was a little overwhelmed by it all,” the Daily Star quoted the source as saying.

“It took a few weeks for her death to truly sink in. But it was clear from the support Jade and her family got from the public that there is great affection for her.

“We are planning a series of shows to mark our 10th anniversary and it would be a real shame not to give Jade her own show – separate from the others,” the source added.

The documentary, which will be screened on C4′s sister channel E4, will chart her rise to fame from the moment she stepped inside the BB house in 2002.

Producers will use an array of clips showing her funniest moments, including her stripping during a drinking game and her undercover clinch with PJ Ellis, 28.

They will also document her shock return to the house in 2007 when she famously clashed with Bollywood beauty Shilpa Shetty, 32, sparking a huge race row.

Max Clifford, Jade’s publicist and close friend, said on April 30 that he was thrilled about the change of heart.

“There is certainly a lot to celebrate,” he added. (ANI

US now feels “seasoned” Sharif better bet for it than ” ineffective” Zardari

New York, Apr.24 (ANI): While Pakistan is facing an unprecedented threat from the Taliban, which is threatening to take over the reigns of the country, a worried lot of US political leaders are of the view that former Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif would have performed much better than the current President Asif Ali Zardari in these testing circumstances.

A report in the Wall Street Journal stated that Zardari’s ineffectiveness in curbing the Taliban’s surge and lack of his political ability, has forced the US administration to look for other options in Pakistan.

According to the report, what may be seen as a drastic change in opinions, the US and European officials believe that Sharif’s longstanding association with the various religious parties of the country may provide a better opportunity for him to convince the general public of the immediate and important need to take the attack to the Taliban.

A senior US official told the newspaper that Sharif could be in a better position to deliver what the US wants in the current situation.

The change of heart of the United States, which has until now kept it self at bay from the right wing politics of the Pakistan Muslim League -Nawaz chief, can be gauged from the recent series of visits of envoys at the leader’s residence in Raiwind, Lahore. (ANI)

Kanye West vows to be humbler from now on

London, Apr 11 (ANI): After being mocked by cult US cartoon show South Park, Kanye West has vowed to be a bit humbler.

Touted to be the most arrogant hip-hop artist, West’s change of heart comes as a surprise for many as he desired to be known as Martin ‘Louis’ The King Jr, earlier this year.

But recently, the TV show portrayed the ‘Love Lockdown’ singer as a gay fish with a massive ego.

To this, West has reacted on his blog and claimed that he is working on his ego.

“South Park murdered me last night and it’s pretty funny. I actually have been working on my ego though,” The Sun quoted him as writing on his blog.

He added: “I need to just get past myself. Drop the bravado and just make dope product. I got a long road ahead of me to make people believe I’m not actually a huge douche – but I’m up for the challenge.” (ANI)
