Valbuena lifts France, Van Persie double

New blood and a change of formation paid dividends for France as debutant Mathieu Valbuena netted the winner in a 2-1 World Cup warm-up win over Costa Rica on Wednesday.

With 16 days until the start of the tournament in South Africa, the Netherlands also secured a morale-boosting win as Robin van Persie scored twice in a 2-1 victory over Mexico.

France, playing in a 4-3-3 formation instead of the usual 4-2-3-1 under coach Raymond Domenech, produced some neat football but looked shaky at the back.

Midfielder Carlos Hernandez put Costa Rica ahead early but an own goal restored parity and Valbuena struck seven minutes from time.

The Dutch, without a number of regular starters including Arjen Robben, Mark van Bommel and Wesley Sneijder, followed England’s example by overcoming Mexico.

Van Persie proved his worth as central striker with two fine volleys to give Mexico coach Javier Aguirre some thinking to do after another inconsistent performance, following their 3-1 defeat by England at Wembley. Javier Hernandez headed a consolation for the Mexicans 16 minutes from time.

“Van Persie was excellent tonight with two beautiful goals, but we missed the power in the second half and allowed Mexico to play much better,” Netherlands Bert van Marwijk said.

Australia became the first team to arrive for the World Cup when they landed in Johannesburg.

“For everybody, this is a new experience to train and to play in altitude,” coach Pim Verbeek said at Johannesburg’s OR Tambo airport.

“So we have to find out how it works and what we can do the upcoming days, we still have work to do, but that’s why we have 15, 16 days to prepare ourselves.”

If the World Cup suddenly seemed a lot closer for the Australians, Spain midfielder Cesc Fabregas was still being forced to duck questions about his club future.

Fabregas, a transfer target for Barcelona, had hoped to get his future sorted out well before the start of the tournament but the Arsenal man had to leave his fate in the hands of club manager Arsene Wenger.

“He told me to concentrate on my football and to concentrate on the World Cup,” Fabregas told reporters at Spain’s training camp in Madrid.

“He told me to leave it in his hands and he will deal with whatever happens with my future. That’s what I’m doing. Just concentrating on football.”

TIPPING THEM

If economists are correct, Fabregas and his national team mates will be concentrating on football right up to the final on July 11, with a poll released on Wednesday tipping them as winners.

Reuters polled a global field of 74 soccer fan economists and 24 respondents said Spain would follow up their Euro 2008 success with triumph in South Africa.

A total of 23 expected Brazil to make it six World Cups, while just one economist expected Italy to retain their title.

There are more serious calculations to be done by coaches, of course, with the June 1 deadline for naming their final 23-man squads looming.

United States coach Bob Bradley named his party on Wednesday, keeping faith with central defender Oguchi Onyewu.

Experienced striker Brian Ching was the surprise ommission from the U.S. squad.

Germany coach Joachim Loew has named his final squad. It has already been reduced to 22 by an injury to midfielder Christian Traesch and the coach will be relieved it was not reduced still further.

Striker Thomas Mueller crashed during a mountain bike run with squad members at their Italian pre-World Cup training camp, needing several stitches to his injured chin, but avoided any bone or muscle injuries.

The opening match at the World Cup will be played at Soccer City, where South African tribal chiefs and healers have slaughtered a cow outside the stadium as part of rituals to appease the spirits of ancestors and welcome fans.

Phepsile Maseko, national coordinator for the Traditional Healers’ Organisation, said on Wednesday the ceremony was intended to cleanse the air and ensure spirits were not frightened by the many languages that would be spoken during the month-long tournament.

Barcelona’s 80-mn pounds bid for ace striker Rooney

London, May 19 (ANI): Barcelona is preparing a massive bid of 80 million pounds for Manchester United’s ace striker Wayne Rooney.

Double Footballer of the Year Rooney, 24, was with England’s squad in the Austrian Alps unaware of Barcelona making discreet moves to take him to La Liga.

Barcelona’s interest in Rooney has similarities with Real Madrid’s pursuit of Cristiano Ronaldo and football power on the pitch and politics off it are interwoven in their interest in him, The Daily Express reports.

Europe’s most attractive club has been knocked off their perch after their Champions League semi-final defeat against Inter Milan.

Coach Pep Guardiola is keen to restore the side to the top immediately and will seek reinforcements, the paper said.

Barcelona also has advanced plans to sign Valencia’s David Villa and Arsenal’s Cesc Fabregas, but the real coup would be a successful move for Rooney, it added.

The Barcelona camp has activated agents to sound out the possibility of a Rooney move.

Rooney is still under contract with United until 2012, but selling the club’s biggest asset will help them prevent making a loss of millions of pounds. (ANI)

Football ‘Gladiators’ in Perspex cages set to do battle in O2 Arena

London, May 8 (ANI): A British company is launching a series of events to find the “best player” in football, cricket, rugby and American football by pitting them against each other in front of spectators.

Some of the world’s top footballers are to star in a ground breaking contest to be held in July at London’s O2 Arena, testing skills such as control, strike power and goal scoring.

Liverpool ace Steven Gerrard and Arsenal’s Cesc Fabregas will join rivals to be staged in front of 20,000 fans just after the World Cup.

Manchester United striker Wayne Rooney and former teammate Cristiano Ronaldo are also in the frame to compete along with Valencia’s David Villa and Didier Drogba of Chelsea.

The players will face challenges including A:3K Attack — where six of them will be placed in a Perspex cage with six goals and two footballs, trying to score as many times as possible, The Times reports.

“The players will be stripped back to expose their raw talent,” said Steve Clarke, the founder of Aura Entertainment, which is said to have invested about 10 million pounds in A:3K Football.

Each player is understood to receive at least 500,000 pounds to take part.

Talks have also taken place with rugby, cricket and American football players to expand the format.

Aura is to hold talks later this month about taking the football event to Madison Square Garden, New York, and is negotiating to create an American Football version. “What we’re trying to do is create an entertainment concept,” said Clarke.

He said that formats for other sports could be introduced next year. “We have already had conversations with significant players in other sports — specifically cricket, rugby and American football.”

The footballers were persuaded to take part by Terry Byrne, David Beckham’s long-time confidant. (ANI)

World’s top footballers to test skills in a TV contest

London, Apr 26 (ANI): Some of the world’s top footballers are to star in a ground breaking contest to be held on July 17 at London’s O2 Arena, testing skills such as control, strike power and goal scoring.

Liverpool ace Steven Gerrard and Arsenal’s Cesc Fabregas will join rivals in the TV challenge to be staged in front of 20,000 fans just after the World Cup, The Sun reports.

Manchester United striker Wayne Rooney and former teammate Cristiano Ronaldo are also in the frame to compete along with Valencia’s David Villa and Didier Drogba of Chelsea.

Organisers of the 10 million pounds event hope it will become an annual show to tour the world. A “major name” from football is said to be in talks to be host.

“This is like nothing you’ve ever seen. The world’s best players come together for a pure skills test,” said a source for the ITV1 show.

“As it’s happening after the World Cup, they may well use some of its great shots and crosses to influence the challenges,” the source added. (ANI)

Gunners back Fabregas for World Cup

Arsenal skipper Cesc Fabregas, whose domestic season was ended by a broken leg, will be fit in time to play for Spain at the World Cup, club physio Colin Lewin said.

Fabregas suffered his season-ending injury against Barcelona in the Champions League quarter-final first leg clash at the Emirates last month.

“Cesc is doing well,” Lewin told the club’s website.

“He is likely to be out for the rest of the season with a hairline crack of his fibula. If everything goes well he will comfortably make the World Cup and we will be constantly monitoring him.”

Arsenal has been hit by several injuries this season, but Lewin revealed that forward Robin van Persie is close to a return, along with Johan Djourou and Kieran Gibbs.

“Johan Djourou had a difficult problem with the cartilage in his knee joint,” Lewin said.

“He has made virtually a full recovery and we expect him to train fully with the squad within the next fortnight, as will Kieran Gibbs. They have both made full recoveries from what could have been career-threatening injuries.

“Robin will be joining the squad for full training imminently. That is a big boost for the club and to see Johan and Kieran training with the team in the next fortnight will give everyone a big lift.”

Calf injury sidelines Gallas

France defender William Gallas is expected to miss the rest of the season with a calf injury, Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger said.

Gallas suffered a recurrence of the calf problem which had kept him out for six weeks during the first half of the 2-2 Champions League draw against Barcelona.

Wenger admitted the 32-year-old, who is out of contract at the end of the current campaign, is now likely to be sidelined for up to five weeks, meaning he would be unable to play for the Gunners again this term.

The former Chelsea centre-back, who was playing in his first match since February, should still be fit to feature for his country at the World Cup, but Wenger does not expect him back for Arsenal before the end of the season.

“Gallas is longer than three weeks, I would say five weeks,” Wenger said. “It was a gamble which did not pay off and was a mistake, yes.

“He could be back maybe quicker, but I just give myself five weeks because three weeks is a minimum and we will have to be a bit more cautious with him.”

Wenger, who is already without captain Cesc Fabregas for the rest of the season after the Spain midfielder suffered a broken leg against Barca, expects Russian midfielder Andrey Arshavin, who also has a calf injury, to be available to face Manchester City on April 24.

Arsenal don’t have the firepower to win any title, says Arshavin

London, Mar 24 (ANI): Arsenal striker Andrey Arshavin has said that he is not convinced about the club’s chances of winning any title this season.

The Gunners have battled back from devastating bad luck and injuries to stand two points off leaders Manchester United. Not only that, they also have to play their Champions League quarterfinal against favourites Barcelona.

But Arshavin is not convinced his side is up to the challenge, and insists the club is paying the price for not signing enough players last summer.

Thomas Vermaelen was the only pre-season arrival in a 10 million pounds deal from Ajax while Sol Campbell signed on a free transfer in January, The Sun reports.

Yet despite a string of injuries to stars like Robin Van Persie, William Gallas, Aaron Ramsey and Kieran Gibbs, Arsenal are still second in the table.

Arshavin said: “I am still of the opinion that to win trophies Arsenal needs more players. There is the simple fact that last summer we sold two players and bought only one. So there is an obvious deficit of at least one. Then we lost Van Persie, Gibbs and Ramsey for a long time. So for me it is natural we need new players.”

“Without the variety of players we have less diversity in attack. That allows our opponents to read our combinations more easily. Finally, it results in less ball possession for us and our defence comes under more pressure.

“The Premier League is very interesting, at least as long as we continue fighting to win it. But without new-experienced players, it will be difficult to achieve success. Ideally we need three or four such experienced players and then among our youths there should be guys who are not only good at playing football but have real character,” he said.

Arshavin said he has yet to reach the heights of other overseas players such as Cesc Fabregas, Fernando Torres or Didier Drogba. (ANI)

Arsenal to risk playing Fabregas to keep Euro dream alive

London. Mar 8 (ANI): To keep Arsenal’s Euro dream alive, manager Arsene Wenger is ready to risk playing skipper Cesc Fabregas.

The Gunners skipper limped off in the 3-1 win against Burnley with a tight hamstring and is doubtful for tomorrow’s Porto clash.

It is the same injury that kept Fabregas out for three weeks last month.

“I’m ready to take the gamble. But if there is more than a 50 per cent chance of his hamstring going I will not take it,” The Sun quoted Wenger, as saying.

“You look at the Fabregas numbers and they are amazing 14 goals and 15 assists. He’s a fantastic player with fantastic attitude and commitment,” he said.

“And what people forget, an unbelievable work-rate, too. This season he has taken a big step forward, massive. At 22 years of age he has matured,” Wenger added.

Fabregas will have a scan today to assess the extent of the injury.

Arsenal need to overcome a 2-1 deficit and will be boosted at the Emirates by Sol Campbell’s recovery from a muscle injury. (ANI)

‘Scarred’ Fabregas hits back at Adebayor’s X-rated tackle

London, Sep 18 (ANI): Arsenal captain Cesc Fabregas has hit back at former teammate and Manchester City striker Emmanuel Adebayor, who left him with a nasty scar during the game.

Speaking for the first time about Adebayor’s antics during last weekend’s defeat at Manchester City, the Arsenal skipper lifted his tracksuit bottom to reveal a nasty three-inch gash across his right calf.

“That was the result of an X-rated Adebayor tackle and, pointing to the wound just above the ankle, Fabregas said.

“I think this is a red card here. Yeah, yeah, yeah, that was from Adebayor,” he added.

Fabregas also blasted Adebayor for his tackle that could have left him with a broken ankle.

“I was lucky my foot was in the air when it happened. You know this is football and it can happen. Well… it’s not football but it can happen,” he said.

Gunners boss Arsene Wenger blasted Adebayor’s behaviour, but Fabregas’ gesture revealed the level of resentment towards their one-time teammate.

All I tried to do when he was at Arsenal was to create opportunities for him to score,” The Sun quoted Fabregas, as saying.

“So I think I didn’t do too badly for him. I don’t know. It is a bit strange. We don’t think about him any more. He doesn’t play for Arsenal so we just have to concentrate on our game and our players,” he added.

Adebayor, who quit the Emirates in bitter fashion this summer, is also facing a further ban from the FA after running the full length of the pitch to celebrate his goal. (ANI)

Transfer claims by Spanish clubs are damaging football: Wenger

London, Aug.22 (ANI): Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger has said that outrageous transfer claims by Spanish clubs are damaging football.

A power struggle at Barcelona between president Joan Laporta and his former No 2 Sandro Rosell has seen both men targeting Gunners midfield star Cesc Fabregas.

Asked about how much worth there was in these claims, The Sun quoted Wenger, as saying: “Apart from giving articles to newspapers, all the rest is rubbish. It doesn’t help football; it doesn’t help people to focus on their job. Sometimes it is quite destabilising.”

“The way that Spanish clubs are run is more political than sport orientated. How much does that harm other clubs? It’s difficult to measure, but it doesn’t help other clubs,” he added. (ANI)

Arsenal’s Fabregas at center of Barcelona power struggle

London, Aug 20(ANI): Arsenal captain Cesc Fabregas is at the centre of a power struggle at Barcelona.

According to reports, Fabregas is on Barcelona’s hit-list for next summer, and it is believed that a 30 million pound deal has already been struck between Barca and the Gunners.

It is believed that current president Joan Laporta, who is entering his final year in charge, is desperate to deliver former Barcelona teenastar Fabregas before he quits to stop his sworn enemy Sandro Rosell from taking credit for the transfer at Barcelona, The Mirror reports.

Rosell is also reportedly trying to strike an agreement with Fabregas, an issue which would be the foundation of his election campaign.

Arsenal has denied any such agreement being struck or being in contact with Barca.

Arsenal is convinced that Fabregas, who is midway through a seven year contract, will stay at the club even though he has admitted that he wants to go back to his native Spain one day. (ANI)

Arsenal ready to sell Cesc for 40 m pounds

London, July 6 (ANI): Arsenal have said that they are ready to sell midfielder Cesc Fabregas for 40 million pounds.

“If Arsenal receive a bid in the region of 40 million pounds there will be an enormous pressure to sell,” The Sun quoted a Gunner’s insider, as saying.

Barcelona and Real Madrid are said to be interested in making a bid for Fabregas.

Barca president Joan Laporta signalled his intention to make an offer last week.

“Cesc has Barcelona in his DNA and I think that one day he should play for Barca. We all like him very much – the technical director, the manager, as well as me. He’s always been in our thoughts,” he said.abregas openly flirted with both clubs last week as he branded Arsenal “impotent” for failing to win silverware.

Fabregas went further and said his Catalan family would back him if he went to the Bernabeu. (ANI)

Fabregas charged over alleged spitting incident

London – Arsenal captain Cesc Fabregas was charged on Friday with improper conduct, following accusations he spat at Hull City assistant manager Brian Horton.

There were angry scenes after the end of Hull’s 2-1 defeat to Arsenal in the FA Cup quarter-final on March 17.

Fabregas was not playing in the game as he recovered from a knee injury, but left the stand to celebrate with his team-mates.

“Fabregas has been charged for improper conduct on the night,” Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger told journalists.

“I always said we are always very open to co-operate with any investigation.

“I personally looked at the reports, at the video evidence and there is nothing in there against Cesc.”

Hull manager Phil Brown has also been charged for comments he made about referee Mike Riley after the game.

A statement from the Football Association said Fabregas faces two charges of improper conduct relating to his conduct on the pitch following the game.

“One charge concerns his behaviour in coming onto the pitch after the final whistle, the second charge relates to an alleged spitting incident,” it said.

“The charges are based on submissions from Hull City and video evidence.”

Brown has been charged with “improper conduct and/or bringing the game into disrepute in relation to media comments made after the game concerning referee Mike Riley.”

Both have until 12 May to respond. (dpa)

Fabregas double gives Arsenal easy win over Middlesbrough

London – Arsenal captain Cesc Fabregas scored both goals as his side moved closer to a place in next season’s Champions League with a 2-0 win over relegation-threatened Middlesbrough on Sunday. The Spaniard finished off a superb move midway through the first half and made sure of the points by rounding the goalkeeper halfway through the second.

The win means fourth-placed Arsenal need just one more victory from their remaining four games to clinch a place in next year’s competition.

The Gunners, unbeaten in 20 games, play Manchester United in the first leg of their semi-final in this year’s Champions League competition on Wednesday.

Middlesbrough, meanwhile, remain locked in a relegation dog-fight, stuck third-from-bottom and four points short of safety.

Blackburn Rovers take on Wigan Athletic in the day’s late match. (dpa)

Arsenal’s Fabregas urges club’s players to make history

London, Apr.28 (ANI): Arsenal striker and captain Cesc Fabregas has urged the team’s players to seize the day and become Champions League History Boys ahead of their first European encounter at Manchester United tomorrow.

According to the Daily Express, Fabregas is one of three survivors from Arsenal’s starting line-up who lost the 2006 final to Barcelona.

He said: “It doesn’t get much bigger than a semi-final against Manchester United. When English teams face each other in the Champions League, it can look more like a domestic league or cup match than a European game. But, we need to realise it’s not like that and we just want to be in the final again.”

“To be in two Champions League finals in four years could be one of the best things in the history of the club and we’re determined to make it happen. We respect United as one of the best in the world. It will be a massive occasion. These games are very difficult for both sides – the team who defend better will be the one who go through. The smallest mistake can count,” he added. (ANI)

Familiar English feel to semi-final line-up

London – We’ve been here before. English domination of Europe is becoming a habit.

Statistics don’t always tell the full story, but in this case they are incontrovertible.

For the third season running, three of the Champions League semi-finalists come from the Premier League.

In the past five seasons, the Premier League has provided 12 of the 20 Champions League semi-finalists while Spain, in the same period has yielded four semi-finalists, Italy two and the Netherlands one.

Not since the 2007 final, when AC Milan beat Liverpool, has an English side been eliminated by foreign opposition.

Barcelona remain favourites with the bookmakers, understandably so, given the scintillating form that has given them a six-point lead at the top of the Spanish table, and saw them demolish Bayern Munich 4-0 in the first leg of their quarter-final.

The one doubt is their defence, which has looked shaky at times and suffers from a lack of practice given how Barca tend to dominate possession.

“(It will be) very tough,” said midfielder Frank Lampard.

“Everyone is tough now, but probably no one more so than them.

“They have got some outstanding individuals and probably the best player in the world in (Lionel) Messi.”

Chelsea’s cause will not be helped by the suspension for the first leg of left-back Ashley Cole, who would have been the man to mark Messi.

Arsenal, who lost to Liverpool in last season’s semi-final, face United. When they met in the Premier League in November, Arsenal won 2-1 in a classic.

Arsenal are unbeaten in 18 domestic games, and the return of the likes of Cesc Fabregas, Robin van Persie and Theo Walcott from injury has given them momentum.

“It will be a difficult game because Arsenal have a lot of big players back and they are in great form,” said United full-back Patrice Evra.

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger is relishing the reawakening of a rivalry with United manager Sir Alex Ferguson that stretches back over a decade.

“It is a test, but it is a challenge you relish and we are excited about that,” he said.

“What will important against United will be the form of the day.

“Both teams have the same programme – a game in hand to play in the league, a cup semi-final, so how much we are physically okay might have an impact.

“That’s one of the great things about these type of games – they are not predictable.

“You can say that Manchester United are an attacking team so it should be a good game but sometimes, you can cancel each other out.”

Either way, there will be at least one English team in the final, looking to make it three English winners in the past five years. (dpa)

Villarreal keen to take revenge on old enemies Arsenal

Villarreal, Spain – Villarreal are out for revenge when they meet old enemies Arsenal in a Spanish-English quarter-final duel in the European Champions League on Tuesday.

Three years ago Arsenal edged past Villarreal into the final of the elite event on a 1-0 aggregate, when Villarreal’s Juan Roman Riquelme had a late penalty dramatically saved by Jens Lehmann.

Villarreal coach Manuel Pellegrini – a man rumoured to be on Real Madrid’s wishlist – said that “we were really unlucky in that game, we could have reached the final.”

The Chilean coach added that “Tuesday’s game will be difficult… but we hope to be able to go to London (for the second leg on April 15) with a useful lead.”

Villarreal go into the quarter-finals without Spain winger Santi Cazorla, who will miss the rest of the season after breaking his right leg in Saturday’s 3-0 defeat away to Almeria.

“Cazorla is an important player for us,” said Pellegrini, “but we have a squad big enough to cover up for his loss.”

The good news for Pellegrini is that midfielders Marcos Senna and Cani, who both took heavy knocks in Almeria, will be fit for Tuesday.

Senna, wily anchorman for Villarreal and Spain, said that “we had a bad day (in Almeria), because of the result and because of Santi… But Tuesday’s game is too important to approach without being in the right frame of mind.”

Villareal are currently fourth in La Liga, the same position Arsenal hold in the Premier League.

Arsenal will arrive at Villarreal’s small Madrigal ground in good heart after Saturday’s 2-0 defeat of Manchester City, in which Emmanuel Adebeyor and Cesc Fabregas made successful returns from injury.

Right-back Bacary Sagna said that his team is upbeat to overcome the Spanish opponents again.

“Everyone is confident we can win something this season and can go very far… Our form is back, our confidence is really high and we know we can go all the way in the Champions League.”

Sagna added that “the atmosphere is very good at the moment and we are very confident in all the competitions. I know we can go very far in the Champions League and we will try our utmost to do it.”

Real Madrid setting its eyes on Man U’s Ronaldo again

London, Mar.29 (ANI): Spanish football club Real Madrid continue to be attracted by the prospect of securing Manchester United’s Portuguese striker Cristiano Ronaldo, a player who has become World and European Footballer of the Year since they last tried to sign him.
The Spanish giants have said that they will be back in the close season with a renewed passion and an 100 million pound package to try to entice club and player.
The Real key figure has changed but the aim remains the same. Former president Ramon Calderon has left centre stage, ousted in a vote-rigging scandal during club elections last year.
The contest to replace him is already under way with Florentina Perez ready to stand for office, three years after leaving his Bernabeu seat of power.

Perez wants to bring the glamour and Galacticos back to the Spanish capital and Ronaldo’s name is the top one on his election ticket.

So, too, is the Brazilian superstar Kaka – another 100 million pound target – while Arsenal’s Cesc Fabregas has also been linked but is more likely to be attracted to his former club Barcelona.
Perez will not present his package to the Real electorate until all his potential signings are in place.

But he is convinced he will see off any rival candidates and win the keys to the boardroom.

Steven Gerrard was to be his third star capture but the Liverpool skipper has kicked that idea into the long grass by pledging the rest of his career to the Anfield club.

Ex-president Calderon recently told a Spanish radio station that his legacy to the club was to have clinched Ronaldo’s arrival this summer. And the winger’s international teammate and Real defender Pepe believes he is on his way to Spain.

Pepe said: “Cristiano wants to play in the Santiago Bernabeu. I would love him to join Madrid. He has already said that he wants to come and I hope that next season he is with us.”

A Spanish source told Sport of the World: “There is a cleverly conceived plan in place for Cristiano to join Real.

United has been drawing up a new deal that could earn him up to 200,000-pounds-a-week as a reward for his status as the world’s best player. (ANI)
