State boards yet to send results to DU

New Delhi, June 5 — Vijay Kandiya’s dream of studying in one of the Delhi University (DU) colleges might not materialise this year. Kandiya, a student of the Haryana board, doesn’t have his mark sheet yet despite the fact that his results are out.

Most state boards declare their results later than ICSE and CBSE. Kandiya, who wants to pursue B.Com (Honours) from a DU college, said: “I am very dejected. The mark sheets may take another 20 days to come.

What should I do?” According to DU admission guidelines, students from the Schedules Tribe and Scheduled Caste are required to bring their SC/ST certificates, along with their two self-attested photographs, school certificate and mark-sheet of senior school certificate examination. With such criteria in place, and just a week to go before the sale of forms closes, SC/ST students like Kandiya from state boards may not be able to apply for admissions to Delhi University this year.

Officials said they couldn’t do much as the boards have not sent the CDs of their results yet to the varsity.

Conviction for 6 phony sick certificates

A former Darwin IT worker at the Defence Department has pleaded guilty to using forged documents for sick leave.

The Darwin Magistrates Court heard Michael Wise, 32, took a total of 10 days’ sick leave over a three-year period.

He provided his employer with six doctors certificates, but his boss became suspicious and realised the certificates were identical, except for the date.

She called the doctor on the certificate, who confirmed Wise had not visited the GP on those dates.

The court heard Wise was paid more than $2000 for his time off.

His lawyer said he was depressed and had done something “very stupid”.

He said Wise was extremely embarrassed and could no longer work in places requiring security clearance.

He was convicted and put on a 12-month good behaviour bond.

Kashmiri girls take up taekwondo for self-defence

Srinagar, Mar 30 (ANI): Women in the Kashmir region are learning martial arts for self-defence and also to stay physically fit.

At a training centre conducted by Syed Shujat in Srinagar, nearly 100 girls from different schools are actively learning taekwondo.

The taekwondo trainees feel that the martial art would help them build their stamina and enhance their abilities to defend themselves.

“It”s important because it helps us in our protection. It builds our stamina and in many other aspects. If we see, it has a bright future. Doing MBBS, engineering is not enough, sports also plays a vital role in our day-to-day life. Yes, I would say in Kashmir it”s very important. We just think what is the use of these games… but no! It is very important,” said Saima Qayoom, a taekwondo trainee.

Initially, most conservative Kashmiri families were reluctant to let their girls participate in a sporting activity on account of it appearing manly.

However, on realising the assets of this martial art, they relented and permitted their daughters to train in the art.

Syed Shujat, who imparts training in taekwondo, feels that the sport would gain more popularity if more girls would take to it.

“Girls of our state should learn taekwondo as it will help them in their future. Some girls come to us to get their taekwondo certificates, which will help them during admission in universities. But I want them to come without any such reasons and learn it so that the sport gains popularity,” said Shujat. (ANI)

US billionaire Allen Stanford arrested

US billionaire Allen Stanford arrestedWashington – Texas billionaire Sir Allen Stanford turned himself in to US authorities after charges were brought against him over alleged fraud.

Stanford, 58, gave himself up to the FBI in Virginia late Thursday, CBS news reported. He is expected to appear in a federal court Friday.

It remained unclear what criminal charges Stanford faces. The US Securities and Exchange Commission brought civil charges against the billionaire’s Stanford Financial group over an alleged Ponzi-scheme fraud worth more than 8 billion dollars.

The financer is accused of having lured investors for years with improbably high returns on certificates. Instead the money was allegedly invested in risky real estate schemes and financial products.

Stanford, who was mainly based in the Caribbean tax haven of Antigua, earlier rejected all accusations and denied any wrongdoing. (dpa)

Inzamam criticizes PCB for seeking NOC from ICL players

Lahore,May 14 (ANI): Former Pakistan captain Inzamam-ul-Haq has criticized the Pakistan Cricket Board for asking ICL players to table ‘no objection certificates’ (NOC) before being considered for selection in the national team.

“On one hand the PCB says it does not recognise the ICL, which it considers as an unauthorised tournament, and on the other hand it is asking the players to get an NOC from the same league. If they want NOCs then it means the PCB is recognising the ICL,” Haq said.

Haq said he has failed to understand why the PCB is reluctant to take back players when they themselves are inclined to play for the country and leave the rebel league.

“Why place such unnecessary conditions on the players who want to play for their country again,” The Daily Times quoted Haq, as saying.

He also slammed the board for first announcing the names of three ICL players in the preliminary squad for the Twenty20 World Cup, and later omitting them.

“Something like this can only happen in Pakistan cricket,” Haq said.

Commenting on the proposed American Premier League (APL), to which the International Cricket Council has denied giving an ‘official’ status, Haq said players would certainly join the league regardless of its status.

“I think regardless of its status players will join the APL,” he said. (ANI)

Ben 10, Ninja Turtles ‘giving millions of kids nightmares’: Poll

London, May 13 (ANI): Children’s television shows like Ben 10, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and Power Rangers are so violent that they give millions of under-sevens nightmares, claims a new poll.

A study of 3,000 parents for TheBabyWebsite.com claims that such programmes force children to grow up too quickly and can encourage bad behaviour.

In the study, over 70 per cent of parents said the youngsters had regular bad dreams because of programmes like Ben 10.

Also many felt broadcasters are too lenient about the content – with some shows overly violent and aggressive.

And some, like Hannah Montana, encouraged kids to grow up too fast.

According to the poll, two thirds struggle to decide which programmes are suitable for their children, reports The Sun.

They call for age certificates to be screened before programmes.

A spokeswoman said: “Violent TV contributes to nightmares.”

Ten most unsuitable shows for under-sevens: Primeval; Doctor Who; Power Rangers;

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles; Ben 10; Britannia High; Grizzly Tales for Gruesome Kids; Robin Hood; Hannah Montana; Horrid Henry. (ANI)
