Flintoff’s decision to reject ECB contract will benefit Chennai Super Kings

Sydney, Sep 18 (ANI): The Indian Premier League would be benefited after Andrew Flintoff rejected the ECB contract, said Chennai Super Kings, the team the England all rounder plays for in the IPL.

Chennai Super Kings manager VB Chandrasekhar said Flintoff’s decision to reject the contract would greatly benefit Chennai, but only if he was fit.

“But the thing is,” he said, “it’s not just about what a cricketer can give on the field. ‘Fred gives us a full package – in terms of marketing he is very valuable. Last time he was of great value to our dressing room, even when he wasn’t playing; someone of that aura can lift the team,” The Sydney Morning Herald quoted him, as saying.

The development comes amid bizarre reasoning by his manager, Andrew Chandler, that Flintoff rejected the ECB contract because he might have to go “bungee jumping”.

With Flintoff’s troubled injury history and the unproven results of his radical treatment in Dubai, any further damage to his knee could be career-threatening and he may be forced to pay for his own treatment.

The Super Kings pay Flintoff 1.55 million dollars a season and expressed sympathy with his plight, saying they may pay for rehabilitation depending on the circumstances, but did not guarantee it.

“There is a rule that says if it is a pre-existing injury, then the IPL team is not liable,” Chandrasekhar said.

“If you have taken a player in and if it is a serious injury and has occurred during the IPL, sometimes you have to weigh that up. We pay him on a match-to-match basis,” he added.

Under the IPL regulations, players must declare previous injuries, but Chennai is fully aware of the well-publicised knee problem that kept Flintoff out of the fourth Ashes Test.

Flintoff’s IPL future after 2010 is also in doubt, as he requires a No-Objection Certificate from the ECB. Granting him one would set a dangerous precedent for the board, as other players could follow his lead – precisely what the certificate is designed to prevent. (ANI)

Malaysian spiritual seeker who ‘went through bad karma in India’ leaves for home

New Delhi, Sep. 11 (ANI): A Malaysian spiritual seeker, who landed in a Varanasi jail for violating Indian immigration laws, has finally left for home in Johor.

After being released from jail on August 27, Lim Soon Seng was waiting to obtain his exit certificate from the Foreigners Regional Registration Office in Delhi to leave India.

“I was shattered in prison. All I wanted to do was to heal and help people but I went through some bad karma in India. There were so many legal complications.

“It placed so much stress on my family and me. Now I am free and happy to go home and see my sister,” The Star Online quoted Lim as saying before his departure on a Malaysia Airlines flight for Kuala Lumpur.

A follower of the Krishna Consciousness movement, Lim of Johor landed on the ghats of Varanasi in 2001. For the next six years he diligently renewed his visa as he wandered in orange robes with sadhus and lived a life of solitude.

But Lim’s spiritual sojourn turned into a nightmare when his passport expired in 2005 and he failed to renew it.

For the next 20 months, Lim, in his 50s, languished in Varanasi jail, one of the most crowded and dreaded Indian jails where notorious criminals are held.

Lim was charged under Section 14 of the Foreigners Act, where offenders can face a jail sentence of between six months and seven years.

A German diplomat, who visited the jail to meet a fellow citizen, came across Lim and notified the Malaysian High Commission in Delhi about his predicament.

Once the embassy assured the local district magistrate that he would be repatriated to Malaysia safely, Lim was released. (ANI)

Imran Farhat discontinues his ICL contract

Lahore, Sep.4 (ANI): Another Pakistan batsman Imran Farhat has parted ways with the rebel Indian Cricket League (ICL).

Farhat has handed over a No Objection Certificate (NOC) to the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB), saying he longer is affiliated with the ICL.

“Imran Farhat came to me to give ICL’s NOC and the PCB will adopt the same procedure, which has been applied in the case of the other ICL players,” The Dawn quoted PCB Chief Operating Officer (COO) Wasim Bari said.

Farhat, who has played 27 Test matches and 33 One-day Internationals for Pakistan had joined the ICL in 2007.

Farhat follows middle order batsman Mohammad Yousuf and bowling all-rounders Abdul Razzaq and Rana Naved-ul-Hassan. (ANI)

Andhra CM’s chopper not airworthy

Hyderabad/New Delhi, Sep.2 (ANI): A controversial twist was introduced into the case of missing Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Y.S. Rajshekhar Reddy on Wednesday, when a private television channel revealed that the seven-seater Bell chopper that was carrying him to Chitoor, was not airworthy.

According to a Times Now report, the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) certifcate shows that the chopper was last inspected two years ago. The certificate also describes the owner and operator of the chopper as being the Government of Andhra Pradesh.

The revelation comes as the Andhra Pradesh Government set up 14 teams, each consisting of eight members (112 personnel), to search for Reddy and the chopper in which he was traveling.

Local villagers have also been provided with torches and other equipment to help in the search of an area that is dominated by Naxals.

The State Government has also asked the Central Government to provide it with an unmanned aircraft and all-weather Fokker aircraft for the search operation in the Nanamalla and Seer Sailam forest ranges, where the chopper is believed to have made an emergency landing due to bad weather. At least seven choppers, including four from the Indian Air Force (IAF) have been pressed into the rescue operation.

The State Government has also said that it will be giving a fresh update on the situation at 7 p.m. (ANI)

Pakistani actress Meera denies being married

Islamabad, August 31 (ANI): Pakistani actress Meera has denied being married to Attiqur Rehman.

Defence-A Police Station House Officer (SHO) Inspector Abid Rasheed had alleged that he had seen the marriage certificate that showed that the wedding was solemnised on September 2, 2007.

The SHO said that the marriage was registered with the local union council, and the nikah khawan in Makkah Colony also confirmed the nuptials, reports the Daily Times.

The allegation emerged after Meera’s mother shifted antique furniture belonging to Attiqur, who accused her of secretly shifting the items without his knowledge.

Attiqur also claimed being beaten by his father-in-law, mother-in-law, and their other son-in-law Raheel.

Cops were subsequently called in and five men of each party were taken into custody.

Meera, however, has slammed these claims, saying that her association with Attique was restricted to business dealings.

She further accused Attiqur of blackmailing her.

She even alleged that Attique recently attacked her house with the intention of killing her, but she was not there at the time. (ANI)

Ballet dancer turned stockbroker Li Cunxin named Australia’s top dad

Melbourne, Aug 28 (ANI): International ballet dancer turned stockbroker Li Cunxin has been named Australia’s top dad at 2009 Shepherd Centre Australian Father of the Year.

The man, who is famous for his bestselling autobiography Mao’s Last Dancer, received the award at a ceremony at NSW Parliament House in Sydney.

“This is indeed a great privilege. I regard this award as recognition of the important contribution all Australian fathers have made for the well-being of our children,” News.com.au quoted him as saying.

He added: I’m sure there are other fathers out there far more deserving than me.”

Li, whose father passed away earlier this year, said he was humbled to have received the award.

He said: “My values as a father and a family man have been passed down from generation to generation. My children are integral in my life.”is three boys, Joshua, Brandon and Cameron had nominated him for the award.

In his role as a father, Cunxin had helped his daughter Sophie overcome difficulties after she was diagnosed with profound hearing loss when she was just 18 months old.

She was one of the first Australian children to receive bilateral cochlear implants.

However, the brave girl went on to complete her Victorian Certificate of Education in 2008 and finished in the top five per cent of the state.

In his autobiography, Li has narrated his poverty stricken upbringing in Communist China.

He had fled from home when he was just 11 to become a ballet dancer.

Li was even locked up in the Chinese Consulate in Houston, causing a political standoff between Washington and Beijing before he was released.

He is married to Australian-born ballerina Mary McKendry. (ANI)

MJ’s another ‘lovechild’ claims he’s not motivated by money

Washington, Aug 27 (ANI): A lawyer for the 24-year-old man who claims to be Michael Jackson’s lovechild has said his client is not interested in the singer’s money.

The man named Prince Michael Malachi Jet Jackson has filed a claim in Los Angeles, and maintains that the late Jackson was his father.e has even submitted a birth certificate naming Michael Joseph Jackson and Zerline LaVette Dixon as his parents.

Malachi Jet Jackson’s lawyer LeRue Grim said the boy’s grandmother brought him up after his mother became a drug addict.

The boy’s mother, Dixon was allegedly a fashion designer in the 1980s working for a clothing line under the company name of Michael Jackson.

Lawyer Grim believes Malachi Jet Jackson is not after MJ’s money but simply wants the recognition of his parentage.

Contactmusic quoted Grim as telling RadarOnline.com, “Malachi has been told his entire life that he is Michael Jackson’s son. His primary goal is to have closure on whether or not Michael was his father, and he wants a DNA test to prove it. Malachi’s primary motivation isn’t money.

“Malachi looks exactly like Michael Jackson. I’m seeking a DNA test and I’m very concerned that it be reliable and that no one slips in DNA from a stranger. Malachi never met Michael, from what I understand Michael was very private about his personal life.”

According to court documents in TMZ.com’s possession, Malachi Jet Jackson was pressurised by MJ’s family to hide his real identity, thus he has come out in the open only after the pop icon’s death. (ANI)

When Obama’s newest catchphrase ‘wee weed up’ left the press puzzled

London, August 22 (ANI): U.S. President Barack Obama left the national media struggling to get the meaning of his newest catchphrase “wee weed up”, which he uttered at a healthcare forum with Democratic party activists in Washington on Friday.

He spokes these words while comparing his recent negative press coverage with similarly dire predictions made during his run for President.

“There’s something about August going into September where everybody in Washington gets all wee weed up. I don’t know what it is. But that’s what happens,” Times Online quoted him as having said.

Obama’s words left the press puzzled.

“I don’t know what that means,” wrote Mike Memoli, of the Real Clear Politics website.

“Is this some Chicago phrase I don’t know about?” asked the conservative blogger Michelle Malkin.

Moments after Obama had made that remark, Time Magazine’s Michael Scherer tweeted: “Obama just said ‘wee wee’.”

There also came an interpretation from the Weekly Standard’s Mary Catherine Ham, who said: “My little brothers often wee-weed up the pool in August.”

Sam Youngman, of The Hill newspaper, wondered when the conservatives questioning the validity of Obama’s birth certificate would “start saying that ‘wee-weed up’ is an old Kenyan Muslim saying?”

The debate finally ended with the White House spokesman Robert Gibbs shedding some light on the phrase during a press briefing.

He said: “(Wee weed up is) when people just get all nervous for no particular reason”.

He added: “Bed wetting would be the more consumer-friendly version.” (ANI)

Michael Jackson’s brain was missing from coffin

London, July 9 (ANI): Michael Jackson’s brain was not their when his body lay in the golden casket at his memorial service, it has been confirmed.

The late King of Pop’s brain has been kept for toxicology tests by experts who want to find out the singer’s fatal heart attack was caused by painkillers.

“As soon as we are done with the brain, we’ll return it. The last I heard, they are not burying the body yet,” the Sun quoted assistant chief coroner Ed Winter as saying.

The ‘Thriller’ hitmaker’s death certificate – signed by sister La Toya – lists the cause of death as deferred.

Recently, Los Angeles Coroner’s spokesman Craig Harvey said that neuropathology tests are going to be conducted to see if the brain holds any clues to the exact cause of Jackson’s death.

However, the examination cannot start until at least two weeks after the death when the brain has hardened sufficiently to slice it open.

Sources at the coroner’s office revealed that his brain was removed before his body was released to relatives the next day. (ANI)

Jackson’s death certificate emerges online

London, July 8 (ANI): A copy of Michael Jackson’s death certificate has emerged online, stating the cause of death as “deferred”.

The document apparently lists “entertainment” as the type of business, and his occupation as a “musician”.

The number of years in this occupation is given as 45, which comes as no surprise considering the King of Pop, who died aged 50, became a world celebrity as early as at the age of five, reports The Sun.

His race is marked as “black”, and the informant, who gave the information for the certificate, is shown as his sister La Toya Jackson.

The certificate also said that Forest Lawn Cemetery was a “temporary” disposition of the body, though final burial is “pending at an unknown location”.

The document emerged on tmz.com just hours after the end of his memorial service at the Staples Center, in Los Angeles on July 7. (ANI)

Bombay High Court scraps quota formula for college admissions

Mumbai, July 6 (IANS) Bombay High Court Monday struck down the Maharashtra government’s proposal to reserve 90 percent of college seats in the state for students from the state board.
The government had proposed only 10 percent of seats in junior colleges for students from Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) and the Indian School Certificate Examinations (ISCE). The rest were for students passing the Class 10 exam conducted by the Maharashtra State Board for Secondary and Higher Secondary Education.

Spelling a major setback to the state government, a division bench of the high court comprising Chief Justice Swatanter Kumar and Justice S.C. Dharmadhikari also lambasted the authorities for taking a “hasty decision” in the matter.

This is the second time in two years that the court has pulled up the government for its attempt to ensure that over 200,000 students of the state board get the measured share of seats and that the 25,000 students from other boards did not get an upper hand in admissions to prestigious colleges.

The judges’ ruling came in the final hearing of a plethora of petitions challenging the government resolution on the 90:10 seat sharing formula, which they termed as “arbitrary, un-constitutional and taken without application of mind”.

The judgement was welcomed by parents of students hailing from the CBSE/ICSE boards who were anxiously waiting for the admissions to begin for the junior colleges for the academic year 2009-2010.

The court said the decision was brought in for political ambitions and to favour the local board students. It “itself was self-contradictory, self-discriminative and conflicting with the objectives with which it was introduced”, the judges observed.

The court felt that the classification of students as coming from the state board and non state boards was “artificial and imaginary”.

Chief Minister Ashok Chavan asserted that they would not challenge the order in the Supreme Court. “We respect the court order,” he said.

Chavan said the 90:10 formula decision was taken after due consideration of the number of students from the state board and non-state boards.

Popeye can’t puff in front of kids anymore!

London, June 24 (ANI): Popeye can no longer puff his pipe in front of kids, for the classic cartoon hero has been hit with an 18 certificate thanks to his smoking habit.

Barmy health chiefs fear the sailor man may promote smoking habits amongst children.

Liverpool’s Primary Care Trust were also looking to gag other cartoons including Bugs Bunny, Betty Boop and even Tom and Jerry if they were seen promoting the unhealthy habit in new films.

“If a new film is produced with a character who smokes, we would classify it as an 18,” The Daily star quoted a Trust spokesman as saying.

“We would request all films featuring smoking be classified in this way unless it was depicting the harmful effect on health,” the spokesman added.

Critics have dubbed the move as “laughable” and without reason that films would make kids smoke.

Lib-Dem councillor Paula Keaveney, who though backed the ban, said: “I haven’t taken to the hills and become a revolutionary since I saw the film about Che Guevara.”

And a furious senior council executive added: “This is exactly the overstepping of the mark which turns local government into a laughing stock.” (ANI)

Rural girls in Ludhiana drawn to professional education

Ludhiana, June 19 (ANI): Several girls belonging to rural parts of Ludhiana are eager to gain self-reliance and lead a professional’s life.

A college here has given them a hope that they can realise such a dream and for this it has opened many new courses which can be joined just after matriculation.

Home science, a holistic field of study, aims at improving the quality of life of families. In Ludhiana, it is empowering girls and enabling them to be professionals and self-employed entrepreneurs.

Established in 1966, the College of Home Science at the Punjab Agricultural University in Ludhiana has been empowering girls. With 305 students enrolled, it offers a number of study programmes with different levels and streams of education.

Girls from rural areas are eligible to join it after secondary education for one-year Diploma Course in Fashion designing, Interior Decoration, Management of Creche and Nursery Schools.

After completing their matriculation, they can take certificate courses in’Souvenirs and Handicarfts’ and Child Care.

“I believe that it is very necessary for women to be independent. Nowadays there are no government jobs. If we can learn and use fashion technology, we can stand on our feet. After getting a fashion designing certificate you can start your own unit and can earn handsomely,” said Baljinder Kaur, a student.

Keeping in view that many rural areas do not have adequate infrastructure and facilities to offer quality programmes of study at their level, the College has recently changed its admission criteria for B.SC (Hons.) Home Science six-year-programme.

Candidates can now enrol themselves after matriculation and this presents better opportunities for rural candidates.

The College has modified its curriculum and added new courses like convenience and health foods and apparel industry management.

It has certainly helped the rural girls by increasing their competence to work in the private sector.

“Being a girl also it has lots of benefit because tomorrow we are going to be the homemakers. So it is going to be really beneficial otherwise also since girls are striding forward in their career this is a very good option it is related to there household work also and gives them a good option to work,” said Jas Keerth, a student.

“Along with agriculture, development of rural families is very important and its main mandate is to improve the quality of the life of women. Be it in the form of giving residents instructions through teaching of various courses or taking up community directed research programmes, then extending the knowledge of teaching as well as research to farm families,” said Dr. Neelam Grewal, Dean of the College of Home Science, Panjab Agricultural University.

Ludhiana-based Anita is one of the many successful women who have graduated from the College of Home Science. After completion of one year Diploma Course in Fashion Designing in 2002, Anita launched her own fashion brand ‘Venenzians’. By Karan Kapoor (ANI)

PCB to consider Yousuf for Sri Lanka Test series following NOC from ICL

Islamabad, May 28 (ANI): The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) chairman Ijaz Butt has said that middle order batsman Mohammad Yousuf would be considered for the Test series against Sri Lanka starting from June 27.

Yousuf has already submitted a No Objection Certificate (NOC) from the Indian Cricket League (ICL) to the PCB, saying he has terminated his contract with the rebel league.

However, it seems that the PCB is still undecided about the punishment for players who had sided with the ICL, The Nation reports.

Senior PCB official said any final decision in this regard would be taken by the board’s Chairman Ijaz Butt.

He said players who intend to terminate their contract with the ICL by the May 31 deadline would be allowed back into the national team after a cooling off period, or could do so by just paying fines.

“We will put up the case to the Chairman. He will take a final decision. But the International Cricket Council (ICC) has advised its member boards to have a cooling period of six to 12 months under a clause in the regulations on unauthorized tournaments,” a report submitted by the PCB Chief Operating Officer (COO) Saleem Altaf stated. (ANI)

Yousuf claims he has obtained NOC from ICL

Lahore, May 27 (ANI): Pakistan middle order batsman Mohammad Yousuf has claimed that the Indian Cricket League (ICL) has given him a No Objection Certificate (NOC) to play for the country.

Yousuf said he had submitted the NOC to the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB).

“I have submitted an NOC from the Indian league and it’s now up to the authorities to clear my way to play international cricket,” The Daily Times quoted Yousuf, as saying.

Yousuf said he desperately wants to play for Pakistan, and it was now upto the PCB to give him an opportunity to don the national cap once again.

“I have handed the letter over to the PCB and now wait for their reply as I desperately want to play for my country,” he said.

Confirming receiving the letter from Yousuf, PCB’s Director (human resource) Wasim Bari said the letter has been sent to the board chairman Ijaz Butt for further action.

“We have to verify this letter and put it before PCB chairman Ijaz Butt,” Bari said.

Earlier, the PCB had asked Yousuf to table the ICL’s response over his decision to quit the rebel league.

According to sources, the PCB is mulling recalling Yousuf in the national team to bolster its batting line-up for the forthcoming three Test match series against Sri Lanka.

Pakistan will play three Tests, five one-day internationals and a Twenty20 international on its tour of Sri Lanka beginning June 27. (ANI)
