Rains lash south Mumbai; evidence may be washed off

MUMBAI: The probe into the synchronized blasts which rocked south and central Mumbai on Wednesday may hit a stumbling block as heavy rains lashed the area, triggering fears that crucial evidence may be lost before being collected by the forensic experts.

Forensic experts of Maharashtra and from Central Forensic Laboratory Delhi have reached here and were working to loca

te the vital clues of these blasts when the downpour started.

“It may not have much effect but some evidence may be washed away,” a police officer said.

Anti-Terror Squad of Mumbai police armed with sophisticated gadgets and sniffer dogs swamped the area and sleuths were trying to ensure that no damage be done to forensic evidence including blood and explosive samples.

Nominations close in Mumbai, Thane for the last phase

Mumbai, April 9 (IANS) Nominations for the last 10 of Maharashtra’s 48 Lok Sabha constituencies – six in Mumbai and four in neighbouring Thane that go to the polls April 30 in the third phase of elections – ended here Thursday.

Top political heavyweights who have filed nominations in the past few days include Ram Naik, Gurudas Kamat, Abu Asim Azmi and young leaders like Milind Deora, Sanjay Nirupam and Priya Dutt, besides several newcomers from different parties.

The 10 constituencies are: Mumbai North, Mumbai North-East, Mumbai North-West, Mumbai North-Central, Mumbai South-Central and Mumbai South; Thane, Bhiwandi, Kalyan and Palghar.

The main contest in the region will be between the Congress-Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) combine and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)-Shiv Sena alliance.

However, this time, other parties like Mayawati’s Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP), Mulayam Singh Yadav’s Samajwadi Party and Raj Thackeray’s Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) have also put up candidates in many constituencies, spelling trouble for the main contenders.

Among the 10 constituencies, the Congress will clash against Shiv Sena in Mumbai South, Mumbai South-Central and Mumbai North-West and against the BJP in Mumbai North and Mumbai North-Central, Bhiwandi and Palghar.

This time, the NCP will be pitted against the BJP in Mumbai North-East, and the Sena in Thane and Kalyan.

The contestants include seven sitting MPs, four legislators and members of legislative council.

In a rare occurrence, two sitting MPs will be in direct contest in Mumbai South, thanks to the delimitation exercise which has changed the face of most constituencies. The Congress’s Deora will fight Sena’s Mohan Rawale.

The MNS’s Bala Nandgaonkar will contest from Mumbai South, giving a tough time to Rawale, while two Muslim candidates – BSP’s Mohammed Ali Shaikh and Samajwadi Party’s cleric-turned-politician Maulana Syed Athar Ali, indicate rough days for Deora.

At the other end of the city, Mumbai North, former central minister Ram Naik will lock horns with former Sena MP and former journalist, Congress candidate Sanjay Nirupam. The MNS has also put up Shirish Parker, a close confidant of Raj Thackeray.

In the neighbouring Mumbai North-West seat, the Congress’ strongman Gurudas Kamat is pitted against Sena heavyweight Gajanand Kirtikar and Samajwadi Party state chief Abu Asim Azmi and the MNS’s Shalini Thackeray, the first-ever Thackeray ‘bahu’ (daughter-in-law) to contest an election.

Priya Dutt will be in a direct contest against the BJP’s Mahesh Jethmalani, ace criminal lawyer and son of former minister Ram Jethmalani. However, the Samajwadi Party has not put up a candidate here though the BSP’s Haji Ibrahim Shaikh is in the fray.

Mumbai South-Central will see the Congress’s Eknath Gaikwad lock horns with Sena MLA Suresh Gambhir, while Mumbai North-East will witness a contest between the BJP’s Kirit Somaiya and the NCP’s Sanjay Patil.

In the neighbouring district of Thane, state Excise Minister Ganesh Naik’s son Sajeev Naik will contest against Vijay Chougule of the Sena, deputy chairman of Maharashtra Legislative Council (the sole MLC in the fray), and the NCP’s Vasant Davkhare will fight against the Sena’s Anand Paranjpe in Kalyan.

Bhiwandi will see a contest between the Congress’ Suresh Taware and the BJP’s Jagannath Patil, and in Palghar the Congress’s Damu Shingda will fight against the BJP’s Chintaman Wanga.

Besides these seasoned politicians, non-politicians are also in the fray for the first time. They include a banker, ABN-Amro’s country chief Meera Sanyal (Mumbai South), Professionals Party of India (PPI)’s Mona Shah (Mumbai South) and Rajendra Thacker of PPI in Mumbai North.

Mumbai attacks trial to start April 15, AS

MUMBAI, India (AP) The trial of a Pakistani man charged in last year’s Mumbai terror attacks will start on April 15, more than a week behind schedule, because of delays in securing the building where the trial is to be held, officials said Monday. Mohammed Ajmal Kasab, the only gunman captured during the attacks, which left 164 people dead, could face the death penalty if he is convicted of 12 criminal counts, including murder and waging war against India.

Nine other attackers were killed during the three-day siege in November. Kasab’s trial will take place in a special court set up at the Arthur Road Jail in central Mumbai where he is being held, but the building’s security infrastructure will only be ready for the trial next week, special public prosecutor Ujjwal Nikam told the trial judge M.L. Tahiliyani.

He did not provide details. Kasab’s trial was supposed to start Monday.

India has blamed the Mumbai attacks on Lashkar-e-Taiba, an Islamist militant group widely believed to have been created by Pakistani intelligence agencies in the 1980s to fight Indian rule in the divided Kashmir region. Pakistani officials have acknowledged that the attacks were partly plotted on their soil and announced criminal proceedings against eight suspects.

They have also acknowledged that Kasab is a Pakistani national. Indian police have also filed charges against two Indian citizens suspected of aiding the attackers.

BJP-Sena urge Maharashtra to vote for ‘decisive Advani’

Mumbai, April 5 (IANS) A galaxy of leaders from the Bharatiya Janata Party-Shiv Sena alliance here Sunday urged the people of Maharashtra to ‘oust’ the Congress-led government at the centre and bring the BJP-led NDA to power under the decisive leadership of L.K. Advani.

Speaking at a rally, Shiv Sena executive president Uddhav Thackeray, glancing at the massive turnout at the Shivaji Park in central Mumbai, said ‘seeing the enthusiastic gathering here, there is little doubt’ which alliance would be voted to power in the elections.

Urging the people of Mumbai and the state to vote for the alliance, Thackeray – turning to address veteran BJP leader Advani – said, ‘At the next rally after May 16, we want you to come here as the prime minister of Hindustan. Even Sena chief Bal Thackeray shall be there to welcome you.’ The crowd cheered its approval.

Discussing the issue of terrorism unleashed from across the border, Thackeray called upon the people of the country to unite. ‘If we are united, nobody will dare to look at us with an evil eye, if they do, we shall gouge their eyes,’ he declared.

During his brief speech, Thackeray trained his guns on both Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and Congress president Sonia Gandhi. ‘A foreigner woman has grabbed the control of the country. What is the prime minister doing about it?’ he remarked.

Demanding a ‘decisive’ government headed by a firm leader, he said: ‘Today, there is no better leader in the country than Advani. We must ensure that the saffron flag flutter in New Delhi after the next elections.’

In a brief videographed speech that was played before the rally, Bal Thackeray demanded that nobody should vote for the Congress until Mohammed Ajmal Amir alias Kasab, the captured Pakistani terrorist after the Nov 26 attacks here, is hanged.

He admitted his body was weak and he could not address rallies like in the past. ‘In this country, if (H.D.) Deve Gowda could become PM, anybody can become PM. I am satisfied with only becoming the Shiv Sena chief,’ he said.

Addressing the rally, senior BJP leader Gopinath Munde said Advani was a tough leader like Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel.

Accusing the United Progressive Alliance (UPA) government of failing to tackle the issue of terrorism, he urged people to vote for the tough and decisive BJP leader, Advani.

Former Lok Sabha speaker and senior Sena leader Manohar Joshi expressed confidence that the alliance would come to power after the next elections.

‘Advani shall become the next PM of India with the blessings of Chhatrapati Shivaji. It is important for the saffron flag to flutter in New Delhi for the security of the country,’ Joshi said.

In his speech, Advani said some states shall throw up surprising results in the next elections – Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh, Bihar, Chhattisgarh, and a couple of states from the south.

Regretting that two top alliance leaders – former prime minister A.B. Vajpayee and Bal Thackeray – both ailing, were not present, Advani said: ‘It is our loss that they are not amongst us here.

‘We miss them. At the same time, it is also a challenge for us to succeeed in the next elections with their blessings. We must not let them down,’ he said.

Earlier, other alliance leaders like Sena’s Subhash Desai and Ramdas Kadam, opposition leader in Maharashtra, and BJP state general secretary Vinod Tawde addressed the gathering.

‘Will seek votes on basis of UPA govt performance’

After piquing his adversaries within the party for the nomination from the South Central Mumbai constituency, Congress MP from North Central Mumbai Eknath Gaikwad is now gearing up for a contest against Mahim MLA Suresh Gambhir of the Shiv Sena.

Gaikwad, 69, had won a surprise victory in 2004 against Lok Sabha Speaker Manohar Joshi of the Shiv Sena.

The former three-term MLA from Dharavi is planning to contest for his second innings in a constituency that has seen its name and boundaries being changed in the delimitation. The following are excerpts from an interview:

What will be your poll plank? My main plank will be the performance of the Congress-led UPA Government at the Centre in the last five years and the manifesto of the Congress Party. My work as an MP, public contacts, relations with people and my work aimed at redressal of public grievances will also be important.

Mumbai East MP Gurudas Kamat was also in the race for your constituency. Do you see any threat from your rivals within the party? I do not feel that such an atmosphere exists. I have been moving around in Chembur and Anushakti Nagar (earlier part of Kamat’s constituency) for the past two days and meeting MLAs and corporators. I cannot sense any discrimination. Gurudas (Kamat) also belongs to the Congress. In a democracy, all feel that they must get a nomination and nothing will happen once my nomination has been declared by Sonia Gandhi and the high command. I am also organising a conclave of workers at Sion where Gurudas will also be present.

Sena candidate Gambhir has pockets of support even among minority voters, apart from the significant number of Maharashtrians. Do you see a strong threat from the Shiv Sena? This will not be of any trouble. Gambhir was elected an MLA with a margin of just over 2,000 votes, and the Congress candidate came number two. Of the seven MLAs in the constituency, five belong to the Congress and two to the Sena. This election is for power at the Centre and is being fought on the policies of the party. My contacts with people will also help. If the constituency was so easy for the Sena, Manohar Joshi would have contested here. However, I am not underestimating Suresh Gambhir.

Your constituency of North Central Mumbai was seen to be jinxed for people who were trying to get re-elected. Barring Sharad Dighe of the Shiv Sena who was elected in 1984 and 1991, the constituency has a record of seeing sitting MPs biting the dust. I have been elected since 1985 from Dharavi. Before I was elected, it was said no one could be elected twice from the constituency. I have won thrice and my daughter (Varsha Gaikwad) has been elected once. We are people who make history.

There is resentment in your stronghold of Dharavi over the arbitrary method in which the Dharavi redevelopment has been initiated. Do you expect a backlash? There is no reason for the people to be cross. Some (Sena) tried to mislead them by asking for 400-sq ft houses, but Dharavi is a difficult slum and giving 400-sq ft houses is not possible owing to the density of population. People have realised the double standards (of the Sena). They (Sena) are also not seeking 400-sq ft houses in the SRA projects that are underway as the work has been undertaken by their builders. We have promised 300-sq ft carpet area houses. If we wanted to cheat them, we could have promised 400 to 450-sq ft super carpet area houses, but we told the truth. I will also get votes from areas like Dadar and Prabhadevi as I have taken up problems of the old buildings. I expect more votes than last time from these areas as earlier Manohar Joshi was in the fray and they had no option. Now they have an option.

What will be the impact of the MNS? The MNS will eat into the Sena votes. I will not be surprised to get a lead in the Dadar Mahim constituency owing to it.

Uddhav Thackeray, Nitin Gadkari booked for remarks on PM

Mumbai, Mar 27 (ANI): A First Information Report (FIR) has been registered against Shiv Sena party chief Uddhav Thackeray and Bharatiya Janata Party state president Nitin Gadkari for their alleged derogatory remarks against Prime Minister Manmohan Singh recently during an election rally in Mumbai.

“An FIR has been registered against Thackeray and Gadkari for the statements made in their speech on March 20 at the Swan mill compound in central Mumbai,” a senior police official from the Kalachowkie police station said.

“The sections applied on both Thackeray and Gadkari are bailable,” the official added.

The election commission has taken a serious note of the incident as the speeches made are in gross violation of the model code of conduct.

Even the Mumbai city collectorate had warned an action against Thackeray under the IPC and Representation of People Act, 1923.

Mumbai city collector I. Z. Kundan had submitted her report to the Kalachowkie police station after examining video recordings of the speeches delivered by all the leaders at the meeting.

“The complaint was filed after a report was submitted by the collector’s office,” the official informed.

He further revealed that the police had taken legal opinion before registering the complaint against the two leaders. (ANI)
