Woman raped by US Fritzl 33yrs ago says she’s relieved he’s behind bars

London, Aug 31 (ANI): A woman who was raped by ‘American Fritzl’ Phillip Garrido 33 years ago says she is relieved that the ‘monster’ is behind bars again.

Katherine Callaway, 58, had an encounter with Garrido in 1976 when he handcuffed and gagged her, reports the Sun.

He drove the casino worker, 25 at the time, to a Lake Tahoe warehouse with a ‘rape room’ filled with porn, sex toys, a film projector and wine.

A Nevada cop heard her yelling as he investigated his Californian plates.

Garrido served just 11 years of a 50-year sentence at Leavenworth Jail, Kansas.

Now, Katherine says that she’s ‘overwhelmingly relieved’ that Garrido is in jail again.

A detective involved in her case said Garrido should have been ‘locked up forever’. (ANI)

Kelly Preston takes on movie role to cope with son’s death

Washington, July 16 (ANI): American actress Kelly Preston is said to have thrown herself into her role in upcoming movie ‘Casino Jack’ in order to cope with the heartbreak following the tragic death of her son Jett.

Preston, 46, and her hubby John Travolta, 55, were devastated when the 16-year-old died from a seizure while the family vacationed in the Bahamas in January this year.

When Preston finally returned to work, playing Kevin Spacey’s wife in the thriller, she used her grief to channel real emotion into her character.

“She wanted to do this to get back to work. She talked to me about her loss. She is deeply affected by it and she brought that to her character,” Contactmusic quoted director George Hickenlooper as saying.

‘Casino Jack’ is scheduled to hit cinemas in 2010. (ANI)

Kristen Dalton crowned Miss USA 2009

LAS VEGAS: Miss North Carolina USA Kristen Dalton was crowned Miss USA 2009 on Sunday, beating out 50 other beauty queens

televised from Planet Hollywood Resort and Casino in Las Vegas.

The 22-year-old aspiring motivational speaker edged out first runner-up Miss California USA Carrie Prejean and second runner-up Miss Arizona USA Alicia-Monique Blanco.

Contestants from all 50 states and the District of Columbia competed in the pageant, aired live on NBC. Contestants were judged by their performance in swimsuit and evening gown modelling contests and their responses to a question asked onstage; unlike the rival Miss America pageant, Miss USA contestants do not perform a talent.

The top 15 contestants worked the stage in white string bikinis designed by pop star
Jessica Simpson’s swimwear line. Rocker Kevin Rudolf performed his song “Let it Rock,” followed by The Veronicas, who performed their single “Untouched” as the top 10 beauties showed off their choice of glittering evening gowns.

Dalton’s title comes with a year’s use of a New York apartment, a public relations team, a two-year scholarship at the New York Film Academy and an undisclosed salary.

She also will go to the Bahamas in August to compete in the Miss Universe pageant, where American beauties haven’t been lucky in recent years. Both Miss USA 2008 Crystle Stewart and her predecessor, Rachel Smith, fell on stage during the evening gown competition, becoming accidental YouTube stars.

Asked about the tumble during the show on Sunday, Stewart said it was a lesson in bouncing back from defeat.

“I think it was a true test of my character,” said the 27-year-old Texan, who worked to raise awareness for breast cancer as she travelled the globe promoting the beauty contest.

If there is a YouTube moment from Sunday’s show, it may be Miss California’s answer to a question about legalizing same-sex marriage. The tall blonde stumbled some before giving an answer that appeared to please the pageant audience.

“We live in a land where you can choose same-sex marriage or opposite marriage,” Prejean said. “And you know what, I think in my country, in my family, I think that I believe that a marriage should be between a man and a woman. No offence to anybody out there, but that’s how I was raised.”

Some in the audience cheered, others booed. The pageant had enjoyed a scandal-free year until earlier this month, when Miss Universe 2008 Dayana Mendoza was skewered for a blog posting from a trip to Guantanamo Bay. The entry described having “aloooot of fun” at a base that houses the notorious military prison; it was later deleted from the pageant’s Web site.

The contest, which is owned by NBC and reality TV mogul Donald Trump, was hosted by “Access Hollywood” co-anchor Billy Bush and Nadine Velazquez of the NBC sitcom “My Name is Earl.” This year’s judges included “Saturday Night Live” cast member Kenan Thompson, “Dancing with the Stars” winner Kelly Monaco and gossip blogger Perez Hilton.

Sobhraj fires principal lawyer for ‘conflict of interests’

Kathmandu, April 14 (IANS) Fighting a tortuous battle in Nepal’s Supreme Court to overturn a murder conviction that sent him behind bars for life, Charles Sobhraj has fired his principal lawyer, accusing the latter of trying to jeopardise his chances of acquittal.

Basant Bhandari, one of the top lawyers of Nepal who had been defending Sobhraj since the latter’s arrest from a Kathmandu casino almost six years ago, received a letter Monday, asking him to withdraw from the case due to a ‘conflict of interests’.

Moving with lightning speed in spite of being lodged in prison, Sobhraj has now appointed in Bhandari’s place another senior lawyer, Ram Prasad Shrestha.

Shrestha was a member of the controversial Rayamajhi Commission that was formed in 2006 to bring to justice the people responsible for the attack on democracy during the army-backed regime of King Gyanendra but could not punish a single person.

‘I was shocked by Bhandari’s line of defence,’ Sobhraj said in a message sent to IANS through his lawyers.

‘First, he tried to alienate judges by calling them incompetent and then used the assumption that I could have come to Nepal in 1975 when I have always denied that.’

The new twist comes after the last hearing in a court of appeals Thursday. The Patan Appellate Court is hearing arguments by the state as well as Sobhraj’s lawyers to determine if the Frenchman had come to Nepal in 1975 using the forged passport of a Dutch tourist.

If they find him guilty, it will pave the way for a much more serious conviction. Sobhraj, who had never been convicted of murder before, would then be regarded as having used the clandestine visit to murder an American backpacker Connie Jo Bronzich.

The Frenchman’s feathers were badly ruffled by Bhandari who told the court during Thursday’s hearing that even if it was assumed that his client had visited Kathmandu in 1975, he could still not be convicted now for using a forged passport since the immigration laws of the 70s have been scrapped.

Sobhraj is alleging that Bhandari became hostile over a monetary dispute, triggered by the suspicion that Sobhraj was paying more money to his new lawyer Shakuntala Thapa.

Thapa is the mother of Sobhraj’s 20-year-old fiancee, Nihita Biswas.

La dolce vita with Swiss precision

Lugano, Switzerland – The southern Swiss city of Lugano, on the shores of Lake Lugano in the Italian-speaking canton of Ticino, blends grandezza and la dolce vita with Swiss precision. In spring, snow-capped Alpine peaks and Mediterranean palms are mirrored side by side in the lake. So, too, do the city’s languages, cultures and mentalities merge in a way that is truly unique.

“Signora” Lugano is, in short, a study in contrasts: modern and narrow-minded, industrious and indolent, effervescent and drowsy, and, despite some architectural eyesores, still beautiful.

The city’s Mediterranean climate, lakeside location between the peaks of Monte Bre and Monte San Salvatore, and Italian flair coupled with Swiss order and tidiness make it a magnet for visitors, especially from the north side of the Alps. Despite Lugano’s business efficiency, life there seems easier, cheerier and more colourful than in northern Switzerland.

On Via Nassa, the main shopping street in Lugano’s “centro storico” or historic centre, fashion designers’ and jewellers’ pricey boutiques are lined up like pearls on a string. Some pieces of jewellery and watches in the displays cost hundreds of thousands of euros.

The items find buyers. Lugano is a wealthy city – the beneficiary of decades of flourishing tourism and Switzerland’s third most important financial centre. Wealthy Italians, mainly, stash their millions in the city’s banks.

A Ferrari or Maserati is nothing special, hardly drawing a glance in front of the five-star Grand Hotel Villa Castagnola. At the foot of Monte Bre facing Monte San Salvatore, the venerable establishment seems to have sprung from a story by German writer Hermann Hesse, who lived in Ticino near Lugano.

The hotel, with many historic salons and a luxuriant palm garden, was once the summer residence of a noble Russian family. Today it is a meeting place for Lugano’s high society.

You can also come across the city’s well-to-do in the gourmet lakeside restaurants and posh piano clubs. After supper, they as well as people of more modest means, stroll through the lakeshore Parco Civico, a municipal park featuring illuminated water fountains and old-fashioned pedal boats, to the plaza that is Lugano’s “salotto,” or parlour.

“The Piazza della Riforma is our living room,” remarked Gianfranco, a waiter.

There, in front of the Renaissance facade of the town hall and its meticulously-tended geranium beds, people get together in a cafe over an espresso or aperetivo in the afternoon, and over a glass of Ticino’s own red Merlot in the evening. The locals discuss games played by their beloved ice-hockey club, seven-time Swiss champion HC Lugano, while tourists make plans for the next day.

Funicular rides up Monte Bre and Monte San Salvatore are popular, as are lake cruises on the old-fashioned boats of the Societa Navigazione del Lago di Lugano or Lake Lugano Navigation Company.

You can sail from the main landing place to the picturesque Ticino village of Morcote, which clings to the slopes of Monte Arbostora. Even on hot days, the rather strenuous climb to the church of Santa Maria del Sasso is worthwhile.

Other rewarding destinations are the former fishing village of Gandria; the casino in the town of Campione d’Italia, on the Italian side of the lake; and the markets in Porlezza and Ponte Tresa.

Fighting with Paris Hilton can take you places!

New York, Apr 12 (ANI): A DJ who had gotten into a fight with Paris Hilton is now seeing his career take-off.

Steve Angello recently made news by having the socialite kicked out of his music booth, reports The New York Post.

And now, he is all set to perform at the opening of the new Opium at the Seminole Hard Rock Hotel and Casino in Hollywood, Florida.

The ribbon cutting ceremony to celebrate the gig will be done by none other than Hilton’s former pal, Kim Kardashian.

Meanwhile, Hilton is currently dating The Hills star Doug Reinhardt.

Dubai World offers MGM plan to save City Center – WSJ

NEW YORK, April 10 (Reuters) – Dubai World has offered a plan to save the struggling 67-acre City Center Las Vegas resort development and its relationship with partner MGM Mirage (MGM.N), the Wall Street Journal reported on Friday, citing people familiar with the proposal.

The $8.6 billion Las Vegas Strip resort and casino development is in danger of shutting down, due to financing woes and a dispute between the joint owners, the Wall Street Journal reported.

The new proposal calls for Dubai World, MGM Mirage and bank lenders to commit to the $3 billion needed to finish the project and remove any uncertainty about future funding, those people told the Wall Street Journal.

The Journal said details of the proposal were not available, but a full funding commitment from all parties would likely mean that banks would forgo an earlier agreement to release a $1.8 billion loan only after MGM Mirage and Dubai World had put in more cash of their own. The arrangement would also preserve the project in the event of an MGM Mirage bankruptcy, the Journal reported.

Earlier this week, talks between Colony Capital LLC and MGM, regarding a potential investment by the real estate private equity firm, broke off.

MGM Mirage, the No. 2 casino operator, is trying to find ways to service its $13.5 billion debt and fund payments on its $8.6 billion City Center project in Las Vegas.

Controlled by billionaire Kirk Kevorkian, the company is grappling with weak consumer demand and reduced access to credit.

Australian gambling company Crown Ltd (CWN.AX) has also backed away from investing in MGM Mirage for the time being, the Journal reported earlier this week.

Crown said on Monday it was not in talks to invest in the Las Vegas project. (Reporting by Ilaina Jonas; Editing by Jan Paschal)

Melanie Brown’s steamy ‘Peepshow’

London, Apr 4 (ANI): Ex-Spice Girl Melanie Brown set the stage on fire with a raunchy, X-rated burlesque revue Peepshow.

The Scary Spice performed some kinky moves in a series of revealing bikinis, thongs, stockings and suspenders alongside Kelly Monaco, a former contestant on Dancing with the Stars, reports the Sun.

The 33-year-old singer played the role of Peep Diva, who has been described as a “bold, sexy icon of female empowerment”.

In one of the scenes Mel B is seen wearing just a sequined bra and G-string while holding up a pink feather boa.

The 33-year-old will be performing for three months during its run at the Planet Hollywood Resort and Casino. (ANI)

Be transparent on casino sealing, poll official tells Goa

Panaji, April 1 (IANS) The chief electoral officer in Goa Wednesday asked the state government to behave in a transparent manner over the controversial and much publicised sealing and de-sealing of offshore casino vessels and avoid ‘undue haste’ in its actions.

Goa’s Chief Electoral Officer Ajit Srivastava has directed the environment secretary to personally monitor the offshore casino issue ‘to ensure that all principles of natural justice are followed in processing all such cases’.

‘Any undue haste may not be shown without giving reasonable opportunity to affected parties in taking action, foreclosure or revocation of sealing,’ the order issued by Srivastava said.

There was a political furore last month after both the Congress-led coalition government as well as the opposition Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) claimed credit for the action taken against the offshore casinos, which have been the major flogging horse in the run-up to the Lok Sabha polls.

Three offshore casinos – Rio, Caravela and Maharaja – were sealed by the North Goa district magistrate following recommendations from the Goa State Pollution Control Board (GSPCB) for alleged violation of pollution norms March 24.

However, the vessels were de-sealed only a few hours later, with the government claiming there was a ‘communication gap’ between the GSPCB and the district administration.

Srivastava had earlier issued notices to the GSPCB and the North Goa district administration, asking them to justify their action.

In his order Wednesday Srivastava added: ‘The Pollution Control Board has to ensure that the exercise conducted by them in such cases is carried out in fair and transparent manner.’

Officials re-examine Anna Nicole Smith’s death

London, Mar 26 (ANI): Prosecutors in Florida are taking a new look at the 2007 death of Anna Nicole Smith.

It has emerged that Broward County prosecutors recently met with authorities in Los Angeles and the California Department of Justice.

The move follows the indictment March 13 in California of Smith’s former boyfriend Howard K. Stern and two doctors in connection with her death, reports Sky News.

Smith was found unconscious in her room at the Seminole Hard Rock Hotel and Casino near Hollywood, Florida, in February 2007.

Medics tried to revive her but failed.

A post-mortem found she died of an accidental overdose of prescription drugs including anti-depressants.

The case’s detectives found several prescriptions for drugs – in both Smith’s and 40-year-old Stern’s names – in her hotel room.

Stern, a lawyer, and doctors Sandeep Kapoor and Khristine Eroshevich are accused of conspiring to supply her with drugs from June 2004 to January 2007. (ANI)

Dame Judi Dench sprains ankle after fall

Washington, Mar 21 (ANI): British actress Dame Judi Dench was rushed to hospital after badly spraining her ankle in a fall.

The Oscar winner was exiting the Wyndham theatre, where she is starring in new play Madame De Sade, when she tripped over a stage door and got hurt.

The Casino Royale star has been forced to temporarily pull out of a new London play.

She is now nursing an injured ankle and has been ordered to rest.

However, she is determined to be getting back at work next week.

“As Judi Dench was leaving the theatre, she tripped at the stage door and fell. She was taken to Accident and Emergency, where she was diagnosed with a severely sprained ankle,” Contactmusic quoted Dench’s spokesperson as saying.

“Doctors have advised that she bring no weight to bear on her foot for the time being. As a consequence, Judi’s role of Madame de Montreuil will be performed this weekend by her understudy Marjorie Hayward.

“The Donmar theatre company and Judi apologise for any upset or inconvenience this may cause, and wish to reassure those with tickets that it is her intention to return to the role next week,” the rep added. (ANI)

Scary Spice turns burlesque babe for spicy lingerie

London, Mar 11 (ANI): Former Spice Girl Melanie Brown has shown her raunchy side as a burlesque babe for the latest underwear from lingerie giant Ultimo.

The stunner, a.k.a. Scary Spice, stripped off to bra, knickers and stockings to display the new collection.

Keeping in sync with the burlesque theme, the 33-year-old mum posed with vintage props including a fan, elbow-length satin gloves and beaded necklaces.

“Burlesque is all about embracing and celebrating your body. The shoot was fantastic and I felt every inch the burlesque star,” The Daily Star quoted her, as saying.

“A girl’s gotta have great lingerie, but it’s also all about the wink and the tease that goes with it. Modelling lingerie is really empowering and it was fantastic to get in character. The new Ultimo collection is super-feminine, with lashings of elaborate detailing, luscious colours and sexy fabrics. I just love it!” she added.

Paris Hilton’s embarrassing lip-syncing exposure at b’day bash

New Delhi, Mar 10 (ANI): American socialite Paris Hilton was left a little red faced after she was exposed to have been lip-syncing her hit song ‘Stars Are Blind’ at her birthday party on March 7.

The incident happened at the Body English nightclub at the Hard Rock Hotel and Casino when Hilton’s new boyfriend Doug Reinhardt took the microphone off her, only for the song to continue playing, reports China Daily.

“Paris was really going all-out to impress Doug until he took the mic off her and the singing just carried on. Everyone in the club thought it was hilarious,” a source said.

Hilton has already celebrated her birthday in New York, Los Angeles and Tokyo. (ANI)

Goa Government orders offshore casinos to shift out

Panaji, Feb 24 (ANI): The Government of Goa has given fifteen days notice to casino vessels operating on the Mandovi river to shift further down the Arabian Sea.

“They will not be allowed to anchor on River Mandovi. They can come ashore for refueling and go,” said State Chief Minister Digamber Kamat after a cabinet meeting here on Tuesday.

Kamat said these casinos were revenue earners for the State Government.

“We charge them Rs 5 crore as licencing fee. They also pay various other taxes,” he said.

The opposition Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) had warned the State Government of a severe agitation in case it failed to crackdown on these offshore casinos, which are polluting the river.

Local residents too have opposed these casinos describing them as a major eyesore. (ANI)

Lindsay Lohan, Samantha Ronson cancel Valentine’s Day gig due to flu

London, Feb 16 (ANI): American actress Lindsay Lohan and her DJ girlfriend Samantha Ronson had to cancel a gig for Valentine’s Day, after they were told by a doctor that they were too ill to fly.

The two had been booked to host a party at Passions, a nightclub in Florida’s Seminole Hard Rock Hotel and Casino on February 14, but had to cancel the gig on the day of the event itself due to flu.

“We really feel bad, and I work sick when I can, but unfortunately I couldn’t drive to Miami, so I’m stuck in New York City with doctor’s orders not to fly,” the Daily Star quoted Ronson as telling People magazine.

The gig’s cancellation was a big disappointment for the organisers, as they were unable to book another act in time for the party.

“Lindsay and Samantha stayed out late last night (13Feb09) in New York City, and are not feeling well,” Amanda Senoff, who is the Director of Marketing for Passions, said.

“A doctor said Sam was too sick with the flu to travel and Lindsay is also feeling sick. So they rescheduled for March 7.

“I conferenced all of Lindsay and Sam’s managers for three hours today trying to remedy the situation, and they agreed the girls are sick. What can I say? I am disappointed because this is my first booking for Passions, but these things happen,” she added. (ANI)
