Scientists find ‘modern’ galaxies amongst ancient galaxy clusters

Washington, May 13 (ANI): A team of astronomers has discovered a young cluster, born just 2.8 billion years after the Big Bang, that appears very similar to the much older present-day galaxy clusters.

“We were looking for clusters of galaxies when the Universe was still very young,” says Carnegie’s Ivelina Momcheva, who did the spectroscopic analysis that led to the discovery of the cluster.

“One might think that the clusters we find would look young as well. However, in this cluster we found a number of surprisingly ancient-looking galaxies. This cluster resembles modern-day clusters, which are nearly 10 billion years older.”

“It is like we dug an archaeological site in Rome and found pieces of modern Rome in amongst the ruins,” adds lead author Casey Papovich of Texas A&M University.

The cluster is called CLG J02182-05102 and contains approximately 60 galaxies, including several enormous red galaxies at its centre holding 10 times as many stars as the Milky Way.

Unable to find using NASA’s Spitzer Space Telescope if its galaxies are indeed gravitationally bound, the team used an advanced spectrograph.

Post analysis, they found that the cluster now looks the way it looked 9.6 billion years ago and since then, has moved away as the universe expanded. Today, it stands at a distance of 15 billion light years.

The new discovery will help researchers understand how galaxies evolve and form clusters. CLG J02182-05102’s large red galaxies are unexpected because most galaxies at that time were still rapidly forming stars, and, as a result, appear smaller and their emitted light bluer.

“We are witnessing the youth of truly massive cluster of galaxies,” says Momcheva. “ClG J02182-05102 will continue growing, accreting more galaxies and slowly aging. By the present day it has probably grown to be a large metropolis of a cluster like our neighbour, the Coma cluster.” (ANI)

Scorpions captain injured in assault

The Casey Scorpions football club in Melbourne is in shock over the bashing of one of its players at a Hawthorn hotel.

Club captain Kyle Matthews suffered life-threatening head injuries when he was punched outside the Geebung Polo Club on Sunday night.

The 24-year-old is in a serious condition in the Alfred Hospital with a fractured skull.

Another Scorpions player, rookie David Bell, was also injured in the attack.

In a statement, the club’s management says it is deeply shocked by the incident and Matthews’ injuries.

Police are investigating.

Argentina trumps Hockeyroos again

Argentina has held off a late comeback from the Hockeyroos to take out game two of their four-match series 2-1 at the Townsville Hockey Centre.

The Hockeyroos were blown away with an early double from Maria Noel Barrionuevo and came good too late in the game, failing to get the equaliser.

Argentina was quick to build on its game-one form with a penalty corner giving Barrionuevo the chance to slam the ball into the back of the goal in the seventh minute to give the visitors a 1-0 advantage.

Not giving the Hockeyroos time to recover, Barrionuevo scored her second goal in as many minutes for a 2-0 buffer.

The Hockeyroos had their first real chance of the game in the 52nd minute with Casey Eastham getting a shot away that was marginally wide of the goal.

They finally broke through the tight Argentinean defence in the 63rd minute, with Nicole Arrold smashing the ball into the back of the goal from a penalty, but the leveller never came.

Hockeyroos coach Frank Murray believed his team gave away two soft goals and could not recover despite a second-half resurgence.

“I actually thought in the second half we got on top and dominated and made a lot of opportunities but again not converting, so [I'm] happy enough with the second half but it is disappointing to give them two soft goals,” he said.

Murray suggested there were too many players worried about staying in the team and not concentrating on the task at hand.

“Again I think we’ve just got a few people who are tentative,” he said.

“They know they are playing for spots and are second-guessing themselves. They’ve just got to go with their first decision, execute it and then live with the result of that.

Murray admitted the two single-goal losses against Argentina was not what he was after with the World Cup qualifiers starting next month.

“There’s not much between these two teams and to lose both games is not an acceptable result by any means,” he said.

“We obviously need to click by the time we get to Chile which is about three weeks time, but I think we will see a better performance in the third and fourth Tests.”

SES ramps up flood evacuation efforts

The State Emergency Service (SES) is mobilising extra crews across north-west NSW as major flooding isolates communities and farms throughout the district.

Floodwaters from Queensland have already cut off the village of Wanaaring and up to 200 rural properties are set to be isolated.

Residents from the Goodooga Reserve and Weilmoringle are being evacuated before the flooding reaches those areas.

The SES operations controller for the far west, Tony Casey, says crews will be based in Goodooga to provide people with emergency supplies.

“Residents will be able to go to the SES representatives there, put in their orders and they will be assembled somewhere else and flown in,” he said.

“It won’t be a comprehensive shopping list of thousands of items. It’ll be just down to the essentials to get people through.”

Mr Casey says helping farmers is their priority at the moment.

“As floodwaters arrive in areas where it hasn’t been for many, many years or perhaps even in living memory, more properties owners will be requiring assistance either from the Department of Primary Industry or … from [the] SES if they need assistance or evacuation from their rural properties,” he said.

More than 100 volunteers are on duty around Bourke, Brewarrina, Lightning Ridge and Walgett to help residents affected by flooding.

Member for Barwon Kevin Humphries toured the flooded areas on Monday.

He says the area is seeing an explosion of plant and bird life and the floods are exactly what farmers need to break the long drought.

Residents given flood evacuation deadline

Floodwaters from Queensland have started cutting off roads and isolating farms in north-west New South Wales.

Rises along the Paroo River have cut access between the village of Wanaaring and Bourke and there are also several road closures in the Brewarrina Shire.

The first major flooding is expected to begin at Wanaaring today or tomorrow when the river peaks near five metres.

The State Emergency Service (SES) operations controller for the far west, Tony Casey, says residents of the village will be protected by its levee but rural properties are under threat.

“Of concern in the Wanaaring area is of course the various rural properties which will see isolation for some considerable periods and of particular concern of course is the amount of potential for stock loss in the north-west area of the state,” he said.

Mr Casey says SES representatives will also be meeting residents in the Goodooga Reserve and Weilmoringle today to discuss plans for evacuations in those communities.

“The danger is Weilmoringle. There is a levee there but the peak in the town on the Culgoa River will be such that the levee cannot be guaranteed to keep the floodwaters out and there’s the potential there for loss of life if the community do not evacuate before the peak gets there,” he said.

The SES has ordered residents in the Goodooga Reserve to evacuate their homes by Tuesday night and people in Weilmoringle are being asked to leave by Thursday.

Major flooding is predicted to start in these areas later this week due to rises on the Culgoa and Bokhara rivers.

Indigenous communities evacuated ahead of floods

Residents in two small communities in far western New South Wales have been ordered to evacuate because of the threat of major flooding.

The New South Wales state emergency services has ordered the evacuation of the aboriginal communities of Weilmoringle and the Goodooga Reserve in the north of Brewarrina Shire in the state’s far west.

Tony Casey from the SES says a team of volunteers flew to both communities this morning and knocked on resident’s doors.

“[We wanted] particularly to engage the residents and personally inform them of the requirement for them to safely evacuate,” he said.

Floodwaters coming into New South Wales from Queensland are expected to isolate both communities in the north of Brewarrina within the next week.

Mr Casey says it is better to act early in the interests of safety.

“And the reason why we’ve done it really quite in advance of the peak flood heights is to ensure that the residents of the community are fully informed and also the roads that allow safe evacuation get cut three to four days before the peak flood arrival,” he said.

“Weilmoringle does have a levy around it, but it is potentially not one that will survive a flood peak of the five metres or six metres that’s predicted at Weilmoringle.

“So in the interest of their saftey, we can’t gaurantee that the levy will hold. Hopefully it will and there will be no damage but it’s one of those things where it’s best to err on the side of caution rather than take the risk on peoples’ lives.”

Most will move in with family and friends in neighbouring townships but he says emergency housing will be found for those who need it.

Another team of SES volunteers will return to both areas on Monday to provide further advice and assistance.

US warns Pak over multi-billion rupee Chinese locomotive procurement scam

Islamabad, July 11 (ANI): The United States has reprimanded Pakistan for the multi billion rupee Railway scam in which an US firm was denied a fair chance to secure a contract of a whopping 12.5 billion rupees.

According to The News, US Senator, Robert P Casey Jr has written a letter to President Asif Ali Zardari telling him about the massive irregularities committed by some of the Pakistan Railway Board’s top officials while purchasing 75 electric locomotives from China.

The two page letter, which was delivered to the Pakistan Embassy in Washington recently, warned Zardari that the ‘insufficient transparency and demonstrated irregularities’ could hamper country’s reputation in the international community and would seriously undermine the much needed confidence in its governing institutions.

Casey, in his strong-worded letter, has asked Zardari to stop the finalization of the deal between the Chinese firm and the Railways Ministry.

“I am concerned to hear that notwithstanding the clear pattern of irregularities in the bid process, Pakistan Railways is now moving towards finalising the purchase order. I feared that the finalisation of the tender after a process marked by insufficient transparency and demonstrated irregularities could negatively impact Pakistan’s reputation in the international community and undermine needed confidence in its governing institutions,” the letter stated.

“I look forward to hearing from you that how interests of my constituents are protected equitably,” it added.

Despite several shortcomings, the Pakistan Railways had awarded a tender to a Chinese firm to supply 75 locomotives, and deliberately ignored the American company’s bid.

However, Presidential spokesman Farhatullah Babar has denied receiving any such letter.

“I have not heard about it,” said Babar.

Meanwhile, the top honchos of the Railways Ministry functionaries have confessed before the National Assembly’s Special Committee on Railways about the alleged irregularities. (ANI)

‘Dismantling Taliban, Al-Qaeda safe havens in Pak essential for US, World peace’

Islamabad, Apr.30 (ANI): The United States has reiterated that there is an immediate need to dismantle the Taliban and Al-Qaeda safe havens in Pakistan for the safety of the US and the world.

Addressing the Senate, Chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Subcommittee for Middle-east and South Asia, Senator Tom Casey expressed concerns about the expanding writ of the Taliban in Pakistan.

Casey said the US is concerned over the reports of the Taliban inching closer towards Islamabad.

“I know the administration is working with our partners in Pakistan to prevent the situation from deteriorating even further. We must continue to work with the Government of Pakistan to prevent these radical groups from destabilizing the Pakistani State and the region,” The Nation quoted Casey, as saying.

He said the problems in Pakistan and Afghanistan were inter-related, and highlighted the need to counter the issue with a comprehensive strategy involving all the key members.

“Recent gains of Taliban show how interrelated the threats in Pakistan and Afghanistan are. The threat in Afghanistan feeds off the threat in Pakistan and vice versa. We must treat this for what it is: one theater that requires a unified approach,” Casey added. (ANI)

Jamie Spears’ beau in hospital after horror car smash

London, Apr 29 (ANI): The lover of Britney Spears’ younger sister Jamie Lynn Spears was involved in horror car accident when he wrecked his Ford truck after a fishing trip.

Casey Aldridge, 19, suffered a blood clot near his brain after the car crash and the Nickelodeon star was at his bedside before doctors operated on him.

“Jamie and Britney are both worried sick. They’re concerned about reports that he may need surgery for a blood clot. At first they thought it wasn’t that serious,” The Daily Star quoted a source as saying.

Aldridge and two of his four passengers were not wearing seat belts and were catapulted out of the vehicle.

The medics have said that he had suffered mild brain trauma, a fractured skull and had been “in and out of consciousness”.

Aldridge has been charged with careless driving on his way home in Mississippi.

Also, Louisiana State Police added that there was no indication of the involvement of alcohol or drugs in the incident.

Casey and his pals had been at a cousin’s stag do before deciding to go late night crabbing.

Jamie Lynn, 18, gave birth to Casey’s daughter Maddie just 10 months ago and the couple have been living together since then.

However, they have not yet announced any plans to marry. (ANI)
