London, May 8 (ANI): Action star Bruce Willis has been hit with a lawsuit over a red wine stained rug.

Brit Muslim leaders ‘failing to tackle extremism’: Oxford academic

London, Mar 31(ANI): A University of Oxford academic has criticized Muslim leaders in Britain for not doing enough to tackle extremism.

Nick Chatrath, a researcher at Oxford’s Faculty of Oriental Studies, claims in a paper to be published this week that in the face of growing radicalization in Britain, Muslim leaders are sweeping extremists’ points of views under the carpet instead of facing up to them.

Based on interviews with radical Islamic preacher Anjem Choudary and Dr. Musharraf Hussain, an adviser to the Muslim Council of Britain, Chatrath said: “Moderate Muslim leaders are doing a poor job of tackling extremism in Britain.”

“This attitude must change, as the best way to extinguish extremist arguments is to deal with them out in the open, not just sweep them under the carpet and hope for the best.”

“Some recent polls suggest ordinary British Muslims are becoming more sympathetic to extremists, and this could be related to the way moderate Muslims are ignoring the extremist threat,” The Times quoted Chatrath, as saying in his paper.

Chatrath’s paper came as a committee of British MPs said that the programme set up by the Gordon Brown Government to stop radicalization and reduce support for terrorism had undermined community relations. (ANI)

Garrett urged to save west Sydney bushland

Conservationists say Federal Environment Minister Peter Garrett needs to stop endangered bush from being cleared in western Sydney.

The old Australian Defence ammunition factory site near Penrith contains 360 hectares of Cumberland Plain bushland, but environmentalists say some of it is already being cleared to make way for a development.

Western Sydney Conservation Alliance spokesman Geoff Brown says the development was approved years ago, but Mr Garrett can stop it if he has the bush listed as Critical Habitat.

“The last line of defence for this Cumberland Plain woodland at the old ADI site is Peter Garrett – his department has just listed it as endangered, he needs to act,” he said.

“This is just appalling … any matter of national significance needs to go to Peter Garrett and there’s 360 hectares of national significance in Penrith in western Sydney which is … being swept under the carpet.”

Bumper jute production brings cheer to farmers in West Bengal

Jalpaiguri, Aug 28 (ANI): Despite late arrival of monsoon rains this year, jute farmers in Jalpaiguri district in West Bengal are rejoicing due to bumper production of the crop.

They say that the production this year is as good as previous years.

“Like the previous years, this year also the production is good. There has been no loss due to rain deficit. The price has also not changed. More or less it’s the same. Overall, it’s good and we are happy,” said Nirmal Roy, a farmer.

However, some feel that a better market for their crops would have been a bonus to their high yield.

“Despite late monsoon this year, the production is quite good and we expected a better market. However, if the rains had come a little earlier then the production would have been much better. Nonetheless, what we got is good, but a little better market would have been much satisfactory,” said Suren Roy, another farmer.

Meanwhile, jute traders hope that the market would get stable in a few days time.

“The business is good this time. There were more markets before but this time it’s less. However, we hope that the market would get revive in another five to seven days,” said Narender Singh Rathore, a jute merchant, Jalpaiguri.

Jute is one of the most viable cash crops of India. And this cash crop is mostly cultivated in the eastern margin of the country.

West Bengal stands first in the country in jute production and the districts of Jalpaiguri and Coochbehar are the forerunners in the production of jute in the whole of West Bengal.

Mostly used for making bags and other sundry items, jute is also highly in demand in the carpet industry due to its fine quality.

The jute produced in Jalpaiguri is of such superior quality that it is also known as the brown cascade. By Tarak Sarkar (ANI)

Carpet underlay may cause cancer

Melbourne, Aug 25 (ANI): Your carpet might be putting you at a greater risk of developing cancer, warns a Respiratory physician

Bill Musk has revealed that hessian bags used to transport deadly asbestos products were later reused as carpet underlay.

Anyone exposed to the underlay risk developing mesothelioma, an incurable cancer.

“So carpet underfelt from these bags is definitely potentially dangerous,” News.com.au quoted Musk as having told ABC’s 7.30 Report.

The program interviewed several people who believed some mesothelioma victims had been exposed to asbestos fibres from carpet.

A spokesman for Western Australia’s Health Department has urged home renovators to take care with their carpet.

“The main thing is to not disturb it and try and get some advice as to whether there is any dust in their house,” he said.

The spokesman also said that people should hire professionals to tear up carpet underlay, and thoroughly clean the house afterwards.

The program said the bags were used in carpet underlay until the 1970s, and while it was not known how many homes were affected, it could be in the tens of thousands. (ANI)

ISAF troops in Afghanistan need to get rid of their seige mentality

Kabul, Aug.13 (ANI): For the vast majority of troops at the International Security and Assistance Force (ISAF) headquarters, Afghanistan remains an enigma, a threatening land lying beyond the concertina wire of the base.

When ISAF troops venture out from their base into the “red zone” (i.e. the comparatively safe streets of Kabul) they are prepared for combat.

Barreling through the crowded streets of a city that has been called a comparative “safety zone” by those fighting in the south, they jam the phone signals of average Afghans with their ECMs (electronic counter measures) and jam the roads with their convoys.

Defeat takes the form of thousands of casualty-phobic troops ensconced behind the walls, sand bags, and blast barriers of a well-protected safety bubble.

One would think that the coalition vehicles driving around Kabul in combat posture and menacingly waving 50 caliber machine guns at Afghans were storming a Taliban sangar (trench) in Helmand, not competing with rush hour traffic.

The only Afghan most ever meet is the Hazara carpet seller on base who serves authentic Afghan food once a month. And the only coalition soldiers most Afghans meet are encased in armor-plated vehicles or flak jackets.

Only a small percentage of “fobbits” (those who live in forward operating bases or FOBs) actually interact with average Afghans due to hyper-protective S.O.P. (standard operating procedures) meant to lessen their risks from interaction with Afghans.

ISAF troops suffer from a siege mentality that led the United States dangerously close to losing the war in Iraq in 2005 and 2006. U.S. forces in Iraq were more concerned with force protection than protecting the center of gravity in Iraq, the Iraqi people.

It was only when Generals Petraeus and Odierno pushed their troops out of the bases and into the streets of Iraq that they began to make headway in the counterinsurgency.

This meant more meetings with Iraqi people, who began to feel that the Americans were protecting them.

For the most part, the coalition has ceded the countryside of the south and parts of the east to the enemy, who took advantage of the vacuum left by enemy troops in 2003 when the U.S. was focused elsewhere.

The White House’s fear of engaging in grassroots nation building allowed the Taliban to fill the void. Pro-government khans and mullahs were executed, villagers cowed into submission, and “vanguard” groups sent onto the next province to lay mines and kill “infidel collaborators.” With no visible coalition presence outside of the provincial capitals, the Taliban swarmed the countryside.

Much the same thing happened in Afghanistan in the 1980s under the Soviets, who controlled the major roads and cities and remained safe in their bases for fear of sustaining casualties.

The U.S. Marines’ recent efforts to clear and hold territory in Helmand Province represent a welcome break from this barracked mentality.

It is only by establishing a reliable coalition presence in contested places like Helmand that the coalition can show the Afghans that they are there to stay and protect them. (ANI)

Scientists create material that can repel hot water

London, July 16 (ANI): In a breakthrough study, scientists from University of Minnesota in St Paul have developed a new material that can repel hot water.

The new discovery could help protect vulnerable members of the population such as elderly, children, physically impaired people from hot-water burns.

Scientists have long been working on producing water-repelling materials inspired by natural surfaces, such as lotus leaves.

These leaves have waxy hydrophobic – water hating – coating and a spiky surface texture that helps to trap small pockets of air beneath water droplets.

During the study, Yuyang Liu along with colleagues from Hong Kong Polytechnic University, reviewed studies suggesting carbon nanotubes are powerfully hydrophobic in their search for a material that can repel hot water as well as cold, and found that they seem indifferent to temperature.

To further improve resistance to hot water, the team added carbon nanotubes to Teflon – a substance commonly used as a non-stick coating on cookware.

The researchers later dipped a cotton fabric into the mix.

They found that the material is able to repel hot water, milk, coffee and tea at 75 degree Celsius – a sufficient temperature to cause scalding – without problems.

Moreover, the hot droplets retain a near spherical shape and roll off the material.

However, Liu insists that Teflon coating alone is not so effective. He said that carbon nanotubes create a dimpled surface texture on a nanoscopic scale – small enough to trap air even under drops of hot liquid and prevent droplet impalement on the surface.

Philippe Brunet at the Mechanics Laboratory of Lille, France, thinks the work is promising.

“It has been claimed that a dense carpet of nanowires, coated with ad-hoc chemistry, should have a very high robustness to impalement but he doesn’t think anyone has tested such materials against hot water before,” New Scientist quoted him as saying.

The study appears in Journal of Materials Chemistry. (ANI)

Penelope Cruz’s ‘plumper than ever’ frame sparks pregnancy rumours

New York, July 16 (ANI): Oscar-winner Penelope Cruz’s growing frame has sparked speculation that she may be pregnant.

Her bigger frame was first observed in May, when she walked the red carpet at the Cannes Film Festival. She also became ill due to “food poisoning” at the time.

The New York Post has now reported that Cruz looks plumper than before in a picture, which was clicked when she and her beau Javier Bardem were leaving a U2 concert in Paris.

Bardem is leaving in a few weeks to start shooting a movie in Bali with Julia Roberts.

Cruz’s representatives have refused to comment on the speculation about her pregnancy. (ANI)

London, July 11 (ANI): After accidentally flashing her undergarment on the red carpet recently, Emma Watson appeared at the New York premiere of Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince wearing a safer outfit.

She was snapped wearing a black leather top and white skirt.

The actress wearing her high sandals was forced to look down on co-star Daniel Radcliffe who measures 5 ft 5 inches.mma, who has a kissing scene with Rupert Grint in the new film, also said that he was like her brother.

“It was really awkward. Rupert’s like my brother, so it just felt very, very strange, but he’s a gentleman, and he was a great kisser,” the Sun quoted her as saying.

Rupert Grint also joined the stars soon, while Tom Felton, who plays the evil Draco, stunned the crowd by bringing along her gorgeous girlfriend, Jade Olivia. (ANI)
