Shoe Carnival Reports Record First Quarter 2010 Results

Highest Quarterly Comparable Store Sales Increase in the Company`s History of
13.1%

Highest Quarterly Earnings Per Diluted Share in the Company’s History of $0.72
EVANSVILLE, Ind.–(Business Wire)–
Shoe Carnival, Inc. (Nasdaq: SCVL) a leading retailer of value-priced footwear
and accessories, today announced sales and earnings for the first quarter ended
May 1, 2010.

Net sales for the first quarter of fiscal 2010 increased 13.3 percent to $189.5
million compared to net sales of $167.3 million in the first quarter of fiscal
2009. Comparable store sales increased 13.1 percent.

Net earnings for the thirteen-week first quarter increased 124 percent to $9.2
million compared to $4.1 million in the thirteen-week first quarter ended May 2,
2009. Diluted earnings per share for the quarter increased to $0.72 from $0.33
in the prior year first quarter.

The gross profit margin for the first quarter of fiscal 2010 increased to 31.3
percent compared to 27.9 percent for the first quarter of fiscal 2009. The
merchandise margin increased 2.2 percent due to significantly reduced
promotional activity combined with strong sales of athletic and toning footwear
compared to the prior year. The Company`s buying, distribution and occupancy
costs decreased 1.2 percent, as a percentage of sales, due to the strong sales
results.

Selling, general and administrative expenses for the first quarter of fiscal
2010 increased $4.2 million to $44.3 million, primarily as a result of increases
in incentive compensation associated with the Company`s improved financial
performance. As a percentage of sales, these expenses decreased to 23.4 percent
compared to 24.0 percent in the first quarter of fiscal 2009.

Speaking on the results, Mark Lemond, president and chief executive officer
said, “I am pleased to report we were able to take advantage of consumer demand
resulting in a sales increase in each broad merchandise category. While toning
and athletic footwear were key drivers of our sales in the quarter, our
non-athletic footwear contributed approximately half of our comparable store
sales increase. The record quarterly comparable store sales increase, combined
with a higher gross profit margin and controlled expenses enabled us to report
the strongest quarterly earnings in the Company`s history.”

Mr. Lemond continued, “Our continued strong financial performance gives us the
confidence to remain optimistic about our outlook for the summer and
back-to-school season. We will continue to manage the controllable aspects of
our business for long-term growth and free cash flow generation.”

Second Quarter Fiscal 2010 Earnings Outlook

The Company expects second quarter net sales to be in the range of $165 to $168
million and comparable store sales to increase in the range of 8 to 10 percent.
Earnings per diluted share in the second quarter of fiscal 2010 are expected to
be in the range of $0.23 to $0.27. Earnings per diluted share in the second
quarter of fiscal 2009 were $0.08.

Horse dies at Warrnambool jumps race

A horse has died during a jumps race at Warrnambool’s May Racing Carnival, in Victoria’s southwest.

Sirrocean Storm, ridden by Gavin Bedggood, collided with the third jump and injured its hind leg.

The horse was then euthanised at the track.

The chief executive of the Warrnambool Racing Club, John Green, says Racing Victoria will examine the incident.

“The jumps review panel will be investigating the incident and making a report in due course,” he said.

Jumps racing was suspended in Victoria last year following the deaths of three horses during the May carnival.

Earlier this year, Racing Victoria said the sport could continue if a number of conditions were met, including cutting last year’s fatality rate in half.

V8 Supercars organizers ban bare breasts at Gold Coast 600 motor racing carnival

Sydney, Apr 24(ANI): V8 Supercars Chairman Tony Cochrane insists that the face of the Gold Coast’s motor racing carnival would undergo a significant change this year, as the organizers are trying to shed the event’s seedy, booze-fueled reputation and lure more families.

As part of the transformation, event organizers have even shortened the track to avoid nearby buildings, where women often bared their breasts during the event.

“We got rid of a lot of the high-rise buildings that didn’t do a very good job of policing the behaviour,” The Australian quoted Cochrane, as saying.

“We are not having any ratbag behaviour. We will have designated alcohol zones and family friendly areas where you can’t take alcohol and we’ll work closer with police and security,” he added.

The season began on February 19 at Abu Dhabi’s Yas Marina Circuit and will finish on December 5 at the Homebush Street Circuit in New South Wales.

The series is currently being led by reigning champion Jamie Whincup after he won all six off-shore races at the Yas V8 400, the Desert 400 and the Hamilton 400. (ANI)

I live with tremendous amount of guilt for having so many kids: Octomom

New York, April 21 (ANI): ‘Octomom’ Nadya Suleman has admitted that she’s living with a ‘tremendous amount of guilt” for giving birth to eight babies last year as an unemployed single mother of six.

Suleman appeared via satellite on Oprah Winfrey’s program to discuss what life has been like since becoming a tabloid target.

She said that being known as “Octomom” makes her feel like a “carnival attraction.”

On the show, Suleman also described the difficulty of raising so many children as a single mother.

She acknowledged not being able to provide the children with enough attention and support.

“I live every single day every hour of the day with a tremendous amount of guilt. And I feel guilty when I hold the one or two and then that I can”t be there for the others. And they”re crying. And then I feel guilty. Look at the older ones. They all have different unique needs. And I”ll live with this forever. But all I can do now is keep on going, keep moving,” the New York Daily News quoted her as saying. (ANI)

McEvoy outed for a month

Top jockey Kerrin McEvoy has been suspended for a month by Racing New South Wales stewards for his ride on Shakes at Randwick on March 18.

Stewards found McEvoy guilty of failing to take all reasonable and permissible measures to give Shakes full opportunity to win or obtain the best placing in a 1,400-metre race on the Kensington track.

McEvoy’s suspension is due to begin on April 4, the day after Golden Slipper day at Rosehill, and he will be free to resume riding on May 4.

Stewards ruled that McEvoy failed to take all reasonable measures near the 600m mark of the race as Mossamine improved three wide to his outside and he remained racing behind El Sonador when there was the opportunity to position Shakes to the outside of El Sonador’s heels and have a clear run in the straight.

Shakes was held up in the straight until the 200m mark and finished third.

McEvoy’s good record over a period of 13 years and the fact the major autumn races at Randwick’s three-week carnival were imminent were taken into consideration when stewards issued the penalty.

The jockey, who is stable rider for the powerful Darley operation, has until Monday to lodge an appeal.

Beaches reopen after lifesaver death

Lifeguards have reopened all Gold Coast beaches this morning.

Beaches were closed on Friday when Saxon Bird, 19, died while competing in big seas at the Australian Surf Life Saving Championships.

Lifesavers held a memorial for Mr Bird, a Queenscliff club member from Sydney, at Kurrawa Beach near Broadbeach yesterday.

The Kurrawa Surf Club president, Rob Pollock, says it was a fitting tribute to a popular and well regarded lifesaver.

“The Queenscliff club in particular, I just commend them so much for their strength and courage throughout this,” he said.

“I for one was under the impression they they might return to their home town but they were there in force and they were very strong in what they did and I think that was what gave the rest of the lifesaving community strength to get through it.”

Gold Coast police say their investigation into the death could take a long time to complete.

Superintendent Jim Keogh says investigators have to look into a number of aspects surrounding the death.

“The first thing we do have to look at is the planning of the event and the risk assessment,” he said.

“The footage of the carnival as it unfolded right up to the tragic incident will all be reviewed and certainly we will look at the beach conditions as they transgressed from the Tuesday when the first day of competition was.”

Surf events called off after teenager’s death

Organisers of the national surf lifesaving titles on the Gold Coast have cancelled all water events for the remainder of the carnival after the death of a competitor yesterday.

Saxon Bird from the Queenscliff club in Sydney was competing in the ski leg of the under-19 ironman event when he disappeared into the rough surf.

He was pulled from the water an hour later but died in hospital.

Organisers say beach events will still go ahead.

Before Friday’s event some expressed concerns that the surf conditions were too dangerous, and it is alleged the teenager’s last words to his parents were, “I don’t want to do this.”

Saxon Bird was 150 metres from Kurrawa Beach when he was swept off his surf ski and disappeared into the choppy surf.

It is not clear if he lost control of his own surf ski or was knocked unconscious by another ski, but it took another hour before he was found more than 600 metres from where he was competing.

Ironwoman Hayley Bateup described the conditions as carnage, but says many competitors jumped in the water to join the search.

“Everyone’s in shock and it happened so close in the shore as well,” she said.

“It shows how dangerous our sport can be. Everyone got together and started swimming and if it wasn’t for that, he wouldn’t have been found.”

All competition was cancelled for the rest of the day.

Independent investigation

Surf Life Saving Australia chief executive Brett Williamson says the organisation has launched an independent investigation into the death and is cooperating with the police.

“We’ve asked all competitors and the broader surf lifesaving family to respect the feelings and the trauma that the family and our colleagues in surf lifesaving are going through at this time,” he said.

Competitors say the surf was like a washing machine as two-metre waves and a strong rip pushed people on top of each other.

Many struggled to avoid uncontrolled skis or boards which floated about in the surf.

The organisers are now being asked why the competition went ahead despite the rough conditions.

“Surf lifesavers operate in these sorts of conditions,” said Mr Williamson.

“The issue about the conditions and the competition will be taken in due course in the investigation.”

Cyclone Ului

The dangerous surf is being blamed on Cyclone Ului which is causing rough conditions along the Queensland coast.

Two competitors had been injured the previous day, treated for suspected spinal injuries.

Phoebe Hartin from the chemist across the road from the beach says many competitors had come in with minor cuts and bruising.

“We’ve seen a few broken bones, broken ribs, broken wrists, broken feet, lots of sprained ankles, lots of strained muscles and things like that,” she said.

“I’m really surprised that I haven’t seen more injuries considering the conditions here.”

The Bureau of Meteorology has forecast more strong winds and swells up to 3.6 metres over the weekend.

Red shirts fill streets as protests begin

For weeks now Bangkok has been bracing for massive political protests that have just got underway.

Thousands of the red shirt supporters of Thaksin Shinawatra protested at six points across the city in the curtain raiser to what they claim will be a million-strong march on Sunday.

So far the protests have remained largely peaceful, but all sides of Thai politics have a reputation for violence and it is not known what the next few days will bring.

In central Bangkok on the first day of this protest, some streets have already been effectively shut down by the red shirt protesters.

Crowds of pickup trucks are driving along the street. On the back are dozens of red shirt supporters crowded together, waving flags, chanting and cheering.

The streets are lined with people. Some are supporting them; others occasionally show their displeasure.

At least on this first day, the protest has more of a festival or carnival feel. People are shouting and clapping; some are even drinking beer.

Using megaphones, the red shirts are sitting on the back of the trucks yelling loudly that they demand elections.

One woman, who did not want to give her name, says she came to see the government fall.

“We’ve come here to demand the government to dissolve the house and to have a new election,” she says.

A man who wants only to be known as Mr Dung is on foot helping to steer the rally past.

He says he also came to see the downfall of the current government led by prime minister Abhisit Vejjajiva.

“I’m here to chase the Government,” he said.

“They should either dissolve the house or resign, that’s the whole purpose.”

Mr Dung says Sunday will be a crucial day in Thai history.

“Hundreds of thousands of people will come out, or even a million,” he said.

“They will wear red and ask the government to decide whether to dissolve the house or resign. We come out in peace.”

He is worried, though, that it may come at a personal cost to him and his red shirt comrades if the army loses patience.

“There’s no problem with police, only a problem with soldiers,” he sad.

“They did this many times already. If they use real weapons I’ll be afraid. If they do not use weapons then no problem.”

If the first day of these protests is anything to go by, there will not be anyone in Bangkok who does not know the red shirt rally is happening by Sunday.

Rang barse, bheege chunariya in Sao Paulo

SAO PAULO: The earth was green. The sky was black. The rain came down in red, blue and purple sheets of water. The air was pink with gulal. And there was Rang barse, bheege chunar waali – written by a Bachchan, sung by a Bachchan – pulsating the cold, wet air of Sao Paulo. While 1.1 billion people were probably sleeping on the eve of Holi some 15,000 km away, the small Indian community of this megapolis painted the Sao Paulo Athletic Club red with their colours and songs as a German DJ belted out the best bhangra numbers.

The Brazilian rugby players, roughing it out on a pitch nearby, constantly threw curious glances at the “Indian carnival” party in full flow on Sunday morning in the heart of this megapolis.

It was a rainy day. It’s summer here but the mercury is happy to be at 22 degrees. When we arrived at the club at 10.30 in morning with George Matthew, an Indian who teaches English here, there was hardly anyone at the venue except for Kesavan Nair, one of the directors of the Indian Association of Sao Paulo.

Hundreds take part in ‘Ram Baraat’ in Agra

Agra, Sept 17 (ANI): Hundreds of people here took part in ‘Ram Baraat’, which is a part of the Ramlila celebrations.

Jeetander Chauhan, a worker, who erected the decorations for the celebrations, said that people were happy that god was among them.

“We are feeling that Lord Ram has appeared among us. Hundreds of people have come to witness this famous god’s marriage,” said Chauhan.

Maya Sharma, a devotee, said that women were also excited about this deity marriage.

“I’m really feeling good that ‘Baraat’ procession of Lord Rama and Sita is taking place. We are feeling good that god himself is present here,” said Sharma.

Every year, a new locality is chosen in Agra and festivities last for three days and the area is elaborately decorated with lights and flowers. The area is given a major face-lift befitting the venue for the divine marriage.

The marriage procession sees marriage between saint Shaligram who represents Lord Ram and holy Basil plant, which represents Sita, his wife.

The place is lit up with thousands of lights and non-stop music. The cinema theatres run film shows throughout the night to accommodate the migratory crowd.

These three days are like a carnival when people from all walks of life come together to have a great time.

The history of Ram Baraat is said to be around 125 years old, when Lala Kokamal, a cloth merchant, started the tradition of three-day festivities, revolving around the royal wedding. (ANI)

Lady GaGa nips out in racy see-through lace catsuit at NY fashion week

London, September 16 (ANI): Lady GaGa continued her shock tactics as she stepped out in a bizarre see-through red lace catsuit teamed up with eye mask and eccentric spiky hair piece at the New York fashion week.

The singer’s modesty was said to be hardly covered by a barely there red G-string and an almost-strategically placed ruffle on her costume.

Meanwhile, the 23-year-old recently gave a blood-covered performance and faked her own death at the MTV Video Music Awards, during which she changed her outfit five times, reports the Daily Mail.

However, the ‘Poker Face’ hitmaker’s appearance was said to be a little toned down at the Marc Jacobs Spring Summer 2010 fashion show after party, where she bumped into fellow ‘shocker’ Madonna.

Madonna admitted she was “very flattered” by comparisons to the newcomer.

The Queen of Pop complimented the star, saying: “She looks like she’s going to a carnival in Venice, very beautiful.” (ANI)

‘Thakurani Jatra’ festival being celebrated in Orissa

Bijipur, May. 3 (ANI): Devotees in Bijipur District of Orissa tonsure their heads to please goddess as part of carnival procession of ‘Thakurani Jatra’ festival.

The ritual gains even more significance as not just a way to honor the goddess, but also a protest against the dubious religious leaders and other issues concerning the villagers.

“I have been doing this for the past four to five years. I also wore a garland made of vegetables. It was a way of protest against inflation and rising prices of vegetables,” said Sibsankar Patra, a devotee.

The day of head tonsuring is decided and followed by all villagers.

The leader of the group, the ‘mahant’ leads the procession with a female consort. The female consort is actually a male dressed up as a girl, a comment on the dubious nature of priests and religious leaders.

“The ritual is going on since 1933. Our predecessors used to follow the ritual as well. Then only 10 to 20 people used to get their heads tonsured but now it is almost 200 to 300 people. We do it to propitiate the goddess. But now we are also raising awareness. We write songs as well on various subjects and try to gain people’s attention with our attires,” said Brindaban Parida, the Priest.

Not only are these devotees getting designs on their heads, they are also getting various themes and motifs on their backs. The people claim that they are trying to raise awareness by creating designs based on socially relevant issues. (ANI)

Bangladesh beefs up security ahead of Bengali New Year celebration

Dhaka – Bangladeshi authorities on Monday deployed over 10,000 lawmen to ensure security for the celebration of the 1416 Bengali New Year Tuesday in the capital Dhaka, officials said. “We will ensure the highest security so that the people can celebrate the day with more enthusiasm,” Home Minister Sahara Khatun told reporters visiting the prime celebration venue at the Raman Green, where traditionally tens of thousands of people from all walks of life gather to celebrate Pahela Baishakh, the first day of the Bangladeshi calendar.

Khatun said security arrangements were better this time round compared to those for the celebration of Victory Day programmes in December and other major festivals last year.

The law enforcers, both in uniform and plainclothes, will keep a close eye on movements of people, particularly at Ramna Batamul, the heartland of the Pahela Baishakh carnival, said a senior official of the Dhaka Metropolitan Police.

For the first time, the authorities will deploy the members of a Special Weapons and Tactics (SWAT) force as well as the elite anticrime Rapid Action Battalion throughout the capital city.

On Sunday, security forces captured eight suspected Islamist militants on the city’s outskirts and seized explosives.

Horse races make Megan Gale, Andy Lee’s hearts flutter

Melbourne, Apr 12 (ANI): Horse racing might be a gamble for some, but for Australian actress Megan Gale and her comedian beau Andy Lee it’s one way to get romantic.

The pair first hit it off at Derby Day during Melbourne’s spring carnival 21/2 years ago.

“The races create an environment where you can hit it off,” the Daily Telegraph quoted Gale as saying.

“It’s always a special day for Andy and I at the races,” she added.

Before becoming a couple, Gale and Lee had met briefly at events before, but it was the day at the races that brought them together.

“When I was at the races with him for six hours, that was when he intrigued me,” Gale said. (ANI)

Children’s film festival in Kashmir

Srinagar, Mar 30 (ANI): A four-day long children’s film festival opened in Srinagar with the aim of helping children, particularly orphans, overcome their trauma.

The ‘Shehjaar Children Theatre Festival 2009′ is being jointly organised by the Help Foundation, a local NGO, and the Rajiv Gandhi Memorial Trust.

Nighat Shafi, an organiser of the festival, said that its main aim was to lessen the stress of the local kids and help them smile for a while.

“Everyday something or the other keeps on happening and the parents themselves are passing through stress. How can they comfort their children. We had comparatively good life as compared to these children. So, I am doing my bit in order to provide some comfort to these children. I have made sure that the children from across the area come together and this festival becomes like a carnival,” said Shafi.

“The condition in the valley is very bad. There is a lot of tension among the students. When such a film festival is organised, our minds are refreshed. Therefore more of such festivals should be organised,” said Aqsa, a student.

Many award-winning national and international children’s films will be showcased in this festival, which commenced on March 28. By Parvez Butt (ANI)

Will John Mayer give up Twitter after rumoured break-up with Aniston?

Washington, Mar 28 (ANI): Speculation is rife that singer John Mayer may give up Twitter following his rumoured break-up with actress Jennifer Aniston, owing to his obsession with the micro-blogging service.

Mayer, 31, seems to realise his obsession with it, but revealed on March 26 at his “One Splendid Evening” soiree on-board his “Mayer Craft” Carnival Cruise Liner to benefit VH1 Save the Music Foundation, that he is not ready to give it up.

“I’m just goofing off, it’s silly. Isn’t it silly? Twitter is fun, but I’m gonna get off as soon it becomes like ‘Skippy Peanut Butter Presents Twitter.’ But for right now it feels sort of underground, but of course sadly it’s not that underground anymore,” Fox News quoted him as saying.

“By the way, for the true twitterers I got on really late – let’s not have me pretend that I started it. There are people out there that have twits since 2007, I only got started goofing off on it in January and really, I don’t know how much longer I’m gonna do it for. …,” he added. (ANI)
