Referees got it 96 percent right: FIFA study

(Reuters) – Referees were right 96 percent of the time at the World Cup, according to a study by FIFA’s referees’ committee.

The study looked at key decisions such as free kicks, penalties and goal decisions but did not examine minor rulings such as throw-ins.

The data was collected by video examination carried out by referees committee members and FIFA instructors, Jose Maria Garcia-Aranda, head of refereeing for the sport’s governing body, told Reuters.

“We are working very hard and we are not surprised with the results we have gained because the level of refereeing is much, much better,” he said.

“We have been working with the referees for many years, we have prepared them as well as possible with new technology and video de-briefing.”

It marks the first time that FIFA has released such data on refereeing performances and while there is no way to compare with previous tournaments, Garcia-Aranda said he was confident decision making had improved.

“Even without the formal data we can say that the number of good, difficult decisions has been up this year,” he said.

“We are talking about thousands of decisions made in 62 games, some of them very, very difficult decisions and the vast majority of them were correct,” Garcia-Aranda said, adding that the ‘success rate’ was higher than for players taking penalties.

TEVEZ GOAL

There were a number of high profile wrong decisions in the tournament such as the failure to award England a goal against Germany when Frank Lampard’s shot hit the crossbar and went over the goalline and the missed offside on Carlos Tevez’s goal for Argentina against Mexico.

Hungarian referee Viktor Kassai, who took charge of the semi-final between Germany and Spain, said he was not surprised by the figure of 96 percent correct decisions.

“Top referees figures should be around that, it sounds a realistic figure to me,” he told Reuters.

“The problem always is of course that in a match if you have 200 decisions, if one is wrong and that is a vital one, then no-one cares about the other 199.

“We are like the goalkeepers who can make ten great saves but then let in a howler at the end – which gets remembered? Regardless of the numbers though, we have to aim for faultless performances.”

England win warm-up, coach blows hot and cold

England enjoyed a triumphant home send-off to the World Cup when an unfamiliar team packed with reserves outmuscled a skilful Mexico side 3-1 in their last home friendly at Wembley on Monday.

Manager Fabio Capello may have learned little that he didn’t know before a contest in which England recovered from a ragged first half showing to ensure win.

But for the Italian, it was a night to ink over a few pencilled ticks against certain names and etch a line across others as he finalises the decisions that will cut his 30-man squad to 23 for the finals in South Africa. “I wasn’t too concerned. It was very important to know where we are now – physically and mentally – and I think when we play on the counter, we look really dangerous. But we can’t just play on the counterattack.”

Goals from defender Ledley King, with a well-placed header, and striker Peter Crouch, with what appeared to be his right arm, put England 2-0 ahead before striker Guillermo Franco pulled one back from close range three minutes into first half added time. England goalkeeper Robert Green made two outstanding saves and saw another Mexican shot hit a post before the interval as England struggled to survive against spells of good possession and sharp attacks from the visitors. “The manager told us what he thought at halftime – we had to be a lot more aggressive and get in their faces,” said Steven Gerrard.

Argentina thrash Canada

In Buenos Aires, Maxi Rodriguez scored two goals and Argentina defeated Canada 5-0 on Monday in the Gauchos’ final tuneup before their World Cup opener on June 12. Argentina’s farewell match was played with FIFA player of the year Lionel Messi on the bench as coach Diego Maradona decided to rest the Barcelona playmaker.

Midfielder Javier Pastore started up front with Carlos Tevez and Gonzalo Higuain. Rodriguez scored in the 16th and 32nd minutes and Angel Di Maria added another in the 37th. Tevez scored in the 63rd and Sergio Aguero added his in 71st, seconds after coming on as a substitute.

Milito’s form shows why he was picked says Maradona

Diego Milito will have the same chance as Argentina’s other in-form strikers to earn a place in their World Cup side, coach Diego Maradona said on Sunday.

Milito, one of six strikers in Maradona’s 23-man squad, reached the heights of European football by scoring both goals in Inter Milan’s 2-0 win over Bayern Munich in Saturday’s Champions League final in Madrid.

“I’m not surprised by Milito. He’s had a spectacular season, but then so have the others, Lio (Messi), (Carlos) Tevez, ‘Kun’ (Sergio Aguero),” Maradona told a news conference.

“Milito has proved me right for picking him. Whoever is in the best form will play,” said Maradona, whose first-choice pair appear to be Messi and Gonzalo Higuain.

“There are no first-team players and no reserves (in the squad),” added Maradona, who wiped his face with a towel after his players practised in a downpour at their training base.

Maradona, whose team face Canada in a farewell match at River Plate’s Monumental stadium on Monday (1930 GMT), said the players were all in great spirits and anxious to work towards the South Africa finals starting on June 11.

“In 1986 we had a build up of 70 days, today we are barely 20 days away and I still don’t have my full 23,” said Maradona. Milito, Inter team mate Walter Samuel and Bayern’s Martin Demichelis had not yet joined up with the squad.

“But the players have understood that you experience the World Cup the way we are living it,” said Argentina’s 1986 World Cup-winning captain, who has often stated that he knows what it takes to win the trophy.

“I want to have them all sharp… We can give anyone a good fight, a footballing fight, because we have a good game and good players. This squad are similar to that of ’86 because they have hunger for glory.”

Argentina face Nigeria, South Korea and Greece in Group B at the finals in South Africa.

Maradona, who had criticised Inter coach Jose Mourinho for his side’s ultra-defensive performance in the second leg of their Champions League semi-final away to Barcelona, said he would not give up on attack come what may.

“Not at any price. If I renounced attack it would be a sin with the players I have,” he said. “I think that if we play the way we should we’ll do well.”

Man City bosses ditch Feng Shui

After the ancient Chinese superstition failed to help Manchester City qualify for the Champions League, club bosses have ditched the use of Feng Shui.

Billionaire owner Sheikh Mansour has ordered his staff to dig up mystic charms buried under the pitch by former club chief Thaksin Shinawatra, The Sun reports.

The ex-Thai PM placed magic crystals and porcelain elephants there in 2008.

Their arrangement was meant to energise players and create harmony at the City of Manchester stadium.

But they didn’t bring the expected success for Carlos Tevez and other City stars, as the club finished fifth in this year’s Premier League, the paper reports.

Some superstitious fans want the charms to stay. One said: “We can’t complain about home form the last couple of years that’s for sure.”

Tevez hopeful of working with Mancini next season

London, May 5 (ANI): Manchester City’s star striker Carlos Tevez is hopeful of working with club’s coach Roberto Mancini next season.

The relationship between the City coach and Tevez has come under the spotlight since the Argentinean reportedly complained about the training regime last month.

“Of course I would really like him to continue here. I would like all of us to stay and continue with this ambitious project which we have started,” Tevez said.

“The manager has given me the continuity that every player needs to produce his best. He helped me recover my confidence,” said Tevez, who has been linked with a move to Real Madrid.

“Thanks to the coach and my team-mates, things have worked well for me this season and it’s the reason I have achieved such a high level, The Sun quoted him, as saying.

Tevez would love to break through the 30-goal barrier tonight while pushing City into the top four of the Premier League.

“We are a team that is growing together. We are happy with what we’ve done so far but we know this is our greatest challenge. Now the last part comes, we know it will be tough but we’ll try hard. We are very confident,” he said. (ANI)

Awards continue to rack up for injured Rooney

Manchester United striker Wayne Rooney claimed his second major award of a remarkable season on Friday when he was named Footballer of the Year for the first time by the Football Writers Association (FWA).

Rooney, who has scored 34 goals for United in all competitions this season, took 80 percent of the votes cast by members of the FWA.

Chelsea striker Didier Drogba was a distant second in the voting with Manchester City’s Argentine frontman Carlos Tevez in third position.

“I am delighted to win an award with so much history and tradition and to follow a long line of wonderful players who have been honoured by the FWA since 1948 gives me real pride,” Rooney said.

“I would like to take this opportunity to thank my manager at United Sir Alex Ferguson, the coaching staff and my team mates without whose help and support this award would not have been possible.”

Rooney, who was voted PFA Player of the Year on Sunday and also the Premier League’s fans Player of the Season this week, has successfully filled the void left by the departure of Cristiano Ronaldo to Real Madrid although the tail end of his season has been interrupted by injury.

He is unlikely to play in United’s final two Premier League games as they try and overhaul Chelsea at the top of the table because of a groin strain having recovered quicker than expected from an ankle injury.

“Wayne is a worthy winner of our prestigious award and the margin of his victory is testimony to the marvellous season he has had for club and country,” FWA chairman Steve Bates said on announcing the award.

“His tally of 34 goals so far this season is certain to have captured the attention of our members but I am sure the overall improvement in his game at Manchester United has been of equal significance.

“Wayne’s enthusiasm, hunger and desire mark him out as a special player and we hope he can carry his club form on to the international stage in the World Cup this summer and help England achieve their dream.”

Rooney will be presented with his trophy in London on May 13.

Mancini asks ‘unhappy’ Tevez to quit Man City

London, Apr 30 (ANI): Manchester City coach Roberto Mancini has asked his ace striker Carlos Tevez to leave the club if he is unhappy.

Tevez admitted in a recent interview he was unimpressed with the strict training regime introduced under Mancini.

That alerted top European clubs like Real Madrid and led to reports the striker could leave if City fails to secure the Champions League football next term.

Mancini does not feel there is a major problem but told Tevez to take the Blues into the top four, and then come and talk to him about his future, The Sun reports.

Mancini said: “If a top player is not happy to stay here, it’s better to go to another team. This is the same for Tevez, for Manu Adebayor, for me, everyone. It is important that, when a manager or player works in a team, he must be happy to work in this team.

“It’s not good for the club, squad or the player if he is not happy. I don’t know if Tevez is unhappy but he must be content because we have to play three important games.”

“I think he’s happy as he’s worked very well the last two weeks. I hope he can score three or four goals in the next three games and then we can decide if he has a problem,” mancini added.

Craig Bellamy is another City star who has been reported to be eyeing the Eastlands exit door this summer.

“If a player is not happy, it’s better to change squads. That goes for England or Italy,” Mancini said.

The former Inter Milan chief was surprised by Tevez’s complaints about the double training sessions he introduced following his arrival in December. (ANI)

Tevez can leave City if he is unhappy, Mancini says

Roberto Mancini has told Carlos Tevez he can leave Manchester City if he is unhappy at the Premier League club.

“If a top player is not happy to stay here then it’s better to go to another team,” the manager told reporters. “I think this is not just the case for Tevez, but for all players.”

Tevez complained about Mancini’s double training sessions last week and reports have suggested the Argentine is seeking an improved deal, even though he has four years of his contract to run. Some say he might consider his future if City fail to secure Champions League qualification in the final three games.

“It is important that, when a manager or player works in a team, he must be happy to work in this team,” Mancini said.

“It’s not good for the club, for the squad or for the player if he is not. I don’t know if Carlos Tevez is unhappy but he must be content because we have to play three important games.

“For the players, it is a crucial moment. They must put everything they have on the pitch.

“Tevez has four years left on his contract,” he added. “If he’s not happy, it’s better to change squads, not just for Tevez but for all players as well.”

Mancini said he did not understand Tevez’s complaints about training. “We trained twice in the same day only four times in five months. Two of those times Carlos was in Argentina, one time he didn’t train.

“I don’t know why (he’s unhappy). When we don’t have a midweek game I always train two times on Tuesday because it’s the only way I know. By working we can improve, but we won’t improve if we work two days and have one day off.”

Mancini said he had spoken to the striker. “I don’t know if he has a problem but he works very well now. I spoke with him but what we said is private.

“I reminded him that he only had to train twice in a day once.

“I hope Carlos can score three or four goals in the next three games, and afterwards we can decide if he has a problem.”

City are sixth in the Premier League, one point behind Tottenham and Aston Villa, and host Villa on Saturday.

Premier League stars earn an average 1.5 million pounds a year

London, Apr.28 (ANI): Premier League star pay has soared to an average 1.5 million pounds a year.

Their wages have doubled in the past four years, The Daily Star quotes figures released yesterday, as saying.

There are now calls for players’ wages to be capped so cash-strapped fans can see ticket prices fall.

The top earners come from mega-rich Manchester City, with Emmanuel Adebayor, 26, and Carlos Tevez, 26, each earning more than seven million pounds.

The top-paid English stars are reportedly Chelsea’s John Terry, 29, and Frank Lampard, 31, and Liverpool’s Steven Gerrard, 29, on around 6.5 million pounds. (ANI)

Argentinean ace Aguero wants to sign for Chelsea

London, Apr 21 (ANI): Atletico Madrid’s Argentinean star Sergio Aguero has said that he only wants to sign up for Chelsea.

The 40 million pound star is expected to leave Atletico Madrid this summer.

A host of top clubs, including Manchester City and Inter Milan, have been linked with bids for the striker.

But Aguero insists he would snub City, whom he believes are not genuine title contenders, in favour of working under Blues boss Ancelotti, The Sun reports.

“I look at players like Didier Drogba and Frank Lampard and they are the best players in their positions in the world. I could really learn from players like that, there is no doubt.

“London would be a really amazing city to live in as well, myself and my wife could be really happy there,” Aguero said.

“Carlos Tevez is doing really well at Manchester City but, for me, it is about joining a club who is ready to challenge for honours. City is not ready yet.

“Inter are a great club but it is agreed that, over the last five years, the Premier League has been the strongest,” Aguero added. (ANI)

United in search of double derby delight

Manchester United head into a hugely-anticipated derby away to Manchester City at Eastlands on Saturday hoping to maintain its Premier League title chances and deal a blow to its rivals’ Champions League hopes.

English champions United are four points behind leaders Chelsea with four games remaining, while fourth-placed City are a point above Tottenham, which still has to travel to Eastlands in what promises to be a close-run race for the final Champions League place on offer to English clubs.

City were beaten 4-3 by United at Old Trafford in the previous Premier League fixture between the Manchester clubs while United also defeated their local rivals in a titanic League Cup semi-final at the start of the year.

United are hoping England striker Wayne Rooney can recover from his latest ankle problem in order to feature at Eastlands.

With former United player Carlos Tevez in free-scoring form for City and both sides needing victory for different reasons, there is more riding on the game than many a Manchester derby.

United were on course for a double a fortnight ago but were knocked out of the Champions League by Bayern Munich, lost to Chelsea and drew at Blackburn in the league.

But Old Trafford veteran Ryan Giggs insists that there is still plenty for Sir Alex Ferguson’s side, who have already won the League Cup this season, to play for this weekend.

“We’ve just got to keep going,” said the Welsh winger. “It’s been a bad 10 days or so for us.

“Results haven’t gone our way and neither has the luck, and you need both of those things to go in your favour at this time of the season.

“We’ve just got to bounce back from the disappointment of the last couple of weeks and we’re definitely not going to give up. We’re going to keep fighting until the end.

“There are still a few games left and hopefully Chelsea will slip up so we can capitalise.”

Wes Brown, Anderson and Michael Owen are all still injured for United and Owen Hargreaves is unlikely to feature this season despite recovering from a knee injury.

Roberto Mancini’s team have their own injury concerns with Joleon Lescott still struggling with a hamstring problem, Wayne Bridge out with a groin strain and Stephen Ireland and Martin Petrov both doubtful.

City’s Paraguay striker Roque Santa Cruz thinks matches between the Manchester rivals could become increasingly important as the years go by and could even rival Milan derbies in the future.

“It will get to the same level as we are getting better and the team is going to build up a history in terms of being as good as United have been in the past.

“And the better we do, the more interesting the derby becomes.

“They have that in places like Milan, where they have two top teams in one city, and it is going to be like that in Manchester in the future.”

Tevez dedicated to Manchester City’s fourth-placed finish

London, Mar 31(ANI): Manchester City striker Carlos Tevez has turned out to be a lucky charm for the club, as they have never lost a Premier League game when he has scored.

Tevez has scored 25 goals this season, which has left the club just two points behind fourth-placed Tottenham with seven games remaining in the league.

“I am very happy with 25 goals I have scored, but I want to get more. But more important is to achieve fourth place for the team,” The Daily Express quoted Tevez, as saying.

“I have a great feeling for the supporters of City and I want to win for them. The best way to thank them for their support is by scoring goals for them,” he added.

Tevez further said that he enjoyed the hat-trick that he scored inside 12 minutes in the 3-0 victory against Wigan on Monday.

“Against Wigan, that is the fastest hat-trick I have ever scored and that pleases me. And I was happy to take the match ball home for my daughters to play with,” Tevez said. (ANI)

Tevez credits ‘red-hot’ form to fans’ support during family nightmare

London, Mar 31 (ANI): Manchester City’s ace striker Carlos Tevez credits his good form to fans who supported him during his family nightmare.

The Argentinian, 26, was given compassionate leave last month when his daughter Katie was born prematurely.

Tevez did not play for two-and-a-half weeks while he spent time with his family, The Sun reports.

But City’s fans hailed his return and, since then, Tevez has hit six goals in five matches, including a 12-minute hat-trick against Wigan on Monday.

Tevez, who has grabbed 25 goals this season, said: “I have a great feeling for the City supporters and want to win for them.”

“The best way to say thank you for their support is by scoring goals for them. All the goals I have scored are for the fans and the team. It feels great to be here. The most important thing now is that we get fourth place for the team and fans of City,” he said.

Tevez has also become a lucky charm for City, who have dropped just two points in 11 league games in which he has scored.

In total, he has scored in 16 competitive matches for City and they have failed to win only two of them.

Tevez said: “I feel excellent about my game right now and am very happy with my 25 goals – but I want more.” (ANI)

Adebayor’s return will fire Man City into Champions League

London, Mar 29 (ANI): Manchester City boss Roberto Mancini has said that Emmanuel Adebayor’s return to the side will fire them into the Champions League.

The Manchester City striker is available again after a four-game ban following a red card at Stoke City in the FA Cup.

Now, Mancini will put him straight back into the side alongside Carlos Tevez at home to Wigan tonight as City aim to get back on track following their defeat to Everton at Eastlands last week.

“We have missed Emmanuel a lot and his return will give us a major boost for the run-in. If we can play with Manu and Carlos for the remaining matches, I think we’ll be fine,” The Sun quoted Mancini, as saying.

Adebayor has nine league goals this season from 18 starts while Tevez has 16 from 24.

Mancini will need both to keep on firing right until the end of the season if they are going to win the big battle for that fourth spot.

“I believe all the teams around us have a number of difficult games during the next month and for that reason, anything could happen. We are all fighting for one position and for me it is vital we forget the Everton match and move on – that”s how we work,” he said.

“Wigan have a good manager who likes his teams to play football and it will be a difficult game. We need to prepare for eight battles,” Mancini said. (ANI)

Mancini dismisses report about becoming Juventus’ new boss

London, Mar 22 (ANI): Manchester City manager Roberto Mancini has dismissed reports that he planning to become Juventus’ new boss.

Mancini, whose future depends on whether City get in the top four, was linked with Juventus after witnessing Fulham’s spectacular 4-1 Europa League win over the Turin giants last Thursday.

After the 2-1 win at Fulham, Mancini said: “I am honoured but I came here on Thursday to see Fulham – there is nothing in it.”

Roque Santa Cruz and Carlos Tevez struck the goals that took the Eastlands outfit to within two points of fourth-placed Spurs.

Mancini’s men have a game in hand on the North Londoners and he is convinced his side will reach the top four.

“It was a very important win for us. It’s difficult to play here. Fulham is a good team with a good manager. But it will be a fight until the end of the season with Liverpool, Villa and Spurs.

“Liverpool is a fantastic team. I think we must fight with the three teams,” The Sun quoted Mancini, as saying.

“It was a very comfortable win. We risked in the last 10 minutes after the penalty but before we played a strong game. We deserved to win.

“Carlos scored a fantastic goal, a key goal because after that we played calmly and had chances to score. It was important to win but we should have scored another goal because football is strange,” Mancini added. (ANI)

Tevez still considers Neville to be ‘a moron’

London, Mar. 20 (ANI): Manchester City forward Carlos Tevez believes that Manchester United skipper Gary Neville is “still a moron.”

Tevez branded Neville a moron after the Carling Cup semi-final between the rivals in January, The Sun reports.

When asked if he still felt that way, Tevez grinned and said “yes”.

He went on to attack United by saying that the club have a high opinion of themselves.

Asked at a fans” forum whether City were better than United, Tevez said: “I”d say United have a very high opinion of themselves.”

The Argie striker quit United to sign a 25 million pounds deal with Manchester City in the summer. (ANI)
