Serena Williams thinks her thighs and arms are “too muscular”

Washington, Aug 28 (ANI): Tennis star Serena Williams has confessed that she thinks her thighs and arms are “too muscular”.

Talking to the People magazine, Serena gave her views on feminine beauty.

She said: “I want women to know that it’s okay. You can be whatever size you are, and you can be beautiful both inside and out. We’re always told what’s beautiful and what’s not, and that’s not right.”

When asked about the constant comments on her weight, Serena said it was a trifling issue and didn’t need so much public attention.

The 27-year-old Williams said: “Yes. For some reason, everyone is obsessed with weight. Are you bigger? Are you smaller? And everyone cares about that! It’s insane. Some days, I’ll be bigger. Other days, I’ll be smaller. It’s not a big deal.”

Serena admitted to being insecure about her body and said: “I think every female does that. We think we look good one day, and then the next day – or the next minute – we’re insecure about something. Sometimes I look at myself in the mirror and am like, ‘I want to lose my inner thigh. I’ve got to do an hour of cardio today,’ or whatever. I try not to do it, but the insecurity comes back sometimes. I do want to look good still; I do want to be healthy.”

Asked about the parts of her body that troubled her she said: “My thighs. I think they’re too big. But also my arms. I think they’re too muscular. They’re too thick.” (ANI)

Medical tourism in Kashmir has great potential, say doctors

Srinagar, May 18(ANI): Doctors in Jammu and Kashmir have said that the state possesses a huge potential for medical tourism because of the cheap cost and availability of experienced doctors.

Leading doctors of Kashmir valley have got together in Srinagar, to attend the inaugural function of 55th Annual Conference of Indian Association of Cardiovascular and Thoracic Surgeons (IACTS) at the Sher-e-Kashmir International Convocation Centre (SKICC).

Senior cardiologists of Kashmir revealed that the cardiac surgery in Kashmir costs 80 per cent less than New Delhi, 95 per cent less than Europe and 98.5 per cent less than its cost in the United States.

The doctors explained that keeping the cost effectiveness in mind and the availability of modern expertise and resource, the state had a great potential to tap the opportunity and develop as a medical tourism hub.

Speaking on the occasion was Jammu and Kashmir Governor NN Vohra.

Addressing the guests, he emphasized the need for developing medical tourism, as it would be highly beneficial for the state monetarily and otherwise.

“Meckinze study which said that in another two to three years by 2012, if the rate of medical tourism proceeds the present level of increase, then we would be earning anything between 2 billion dollars to 2.5 billion dollars every year,” said Vohra.

Doctors said other areas that could be promoted for medical tourism in the State were neurology, plastic surgery, hematology, rheumatology and other related areas in cardiology like angiography and angioplasty.

Doctors are hoping that the conference would help in giving an impetus to medical tourism that would help the State and bring the Sher-i-Kashmir Institute of Medical Sciences (SKIMS) on the medical map of the world.

“In government institutions like us, the SKIMS, the cost effectiveness is very high. A person (poor) cannot go to a private hospital, so they can come to government hospitals. Thus, we have a lot of avenues for medical tourism.

Those operations that costs Rs 30 lakhs in America, Rs 20 lakh in Europe and Rs 3-5 lakhs in a private hospital in New Delhi, the same operation can be done here in Rs 50 thousand to Rs 1 lakh,” said Dr. AG Ahangar, head of the department, Cardio Vascular and Thoracic Surgery at the SKIMS.

More than 150 papers regarding cardiovascular and thoracic surgery will be read during the three-day conference.

Experts believe that the scenic beauty and the pollution free atmosphere in Kashmir valley can be a positive factor for medical tourism.

Doctors from Spain have also come to attend the conference, which will conclude today. By Bilal Butt (ANI)

Secret to Britney Spears’ fit body – pole dancing!

London, May 1 (ANI): The secret behind Britney Spears’ fit body has been revealed – pole dancing.

The 27-year-old star has installed an eight-foot metal pole in her 1,100 pound-a-night penthouse suite at London’s posh Dorchester hotel, when her Circus world tour begins its UK leg.

“Britney has a huge fan base in the UK and really wants her shows here to be a hit,” the Mirror quoted a source as saying.

“Pole-dancing is an excellent cardio and fat-burning workout, and Britney has had private classes in her studio gym in LA.

“She wants to keep up her exercise regime on tour. Luckily, the hotel was happy to accommodate her needs.

“She can swing around her pole while watching TV or listening to music. Climbing up it requires real core strength. It really is hard work.

“In addition, she’ll have a treadmill and stepper brought to her suite, as well as a sit-up machine. By the time Britney takes to the stage, her six-pack of old will be back!” the source added. (ANI)

Eminem’s obsession with treadmill!

Washington, Apr 28 (ANI): Rapper Eminem’s obsession with treadmill has forced him to reduce his daily workout regime.

The ‘health conscious’ crooner took over treadmill to shed the extra pounds he gained while on a hiatus from his career.

However, he pushed himself so far that he had to take a break from his regime when he found himself clocking up 17 miles (27 kilometres) a day.

“I’ve been running a lot, taking care of myself. A lot of cardio. I’m actually at the point where I think I’ve been a little obsessive compulsive about running on a treadmill,” Contactmusic quoted him as saying.

“Yeah, it got up to four miles a day, then it got up to six, then I got up to 10, then I got up to 15, then I got up to 17, and I ad to take a break,” he added. (ANI)

Smoking mum’s babies ‘at increased Sudden Infant Death Syndrome risk’

Washington, Apr 4 (ANI): Babies born to mothers who smoke are more likely to be slower to wake or respond to stimulation – and this might explain their raised risk of Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS).

To reach the conclusion, scientific director of the Ritchie Centre for Baby Health Research Associate Professor Rosemary Horne and PhD student Heidi Richardson compared babies of mothers who smoked both during the pregnancy and after the baby was born, with babies who lived in a smoke-free environment.

According to Professor Horne, the study suggests that maternal smoking can impair a baby’s ability to respond to external stimuli, which may explain their increased risk of SIDS.

“Those babies whose mothers smoked did not have as many arousals overall and the progression of the arousal response through the brain was also impaired. Mothers who smoked while pregnant and continued to smoke afterward significantly increased their baby’s chances of succumbing to SIDS,” Professor Horne said.

Although the exact cause of SIDS is unknown, research suggests that an impairment of the arousal process from sleep in response to a life-threatening situation is involved. Autopsies of SIDS victims have revealed brainstem abnormalities in key areas that are required for arousal and cardio respiratory control.

The study involved 12 healthy, full-term infants born to mothers who smoked an average of 15 cigarettes per day. Their arousal responses during daytime sleep were monitored and compared with that of healthy infants who were born to non-smoking mothers.

The study was performed on each child on three occasions: at two to four weeks, two to three months and five to six months.
rousals were induced without compromising the infants’ natural sleep cycles by delivering a pulsatile air-jet for five seconds at the infants’ nostrils through a hand-held cannula. (ANI)

Patients should not be left to suffer due to infighting at hospitals: HC

New Delhi, March 31 (ANI): Taking the authorities at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences to task over neglecting patients due to ego clashes among doctors, the Delhi High Court on Tuesday stated that internal disputes at the hospital would not to be tolerated at the cost of suffering patients.

A Bench headed by Chief Justice A P Shah expressed concern over patients not being treated properly due to ego clashes among different groups of doctors in the premier institute.

The court’s observation came while taking cognisance of a letter written by a mother of month-old child, alleging callousness on behalf of AIIMS doctor in treating her child.

In the letter, the mother Rekha told the court that her baby was suffering from heart ailment and was admitted to the AIIMS under the supervision of Doctor A K Bisoi, a Cardio Thoracic Surgeon. However, the baby was neglected by hospital authorities after Bisoi was suspended by the Health Minister on March 9.

Taking serious consideration of such a situation at the premier hospital, the court said, “We are interested in saving the child. Tell us how you are going to do it. We are not concerned about internal disputes in the hospital. Patients are suffering because of internal fighting.”

“No body should be victimised because of ego clash,” the court said while directing the hospital to bring one specialist doctor before it in the afternoon to assure that the child would be properly treated. (ANI)

Michelle Obama’s toned arms inspire new gym workout trend

Chicago, Mar 11 (ANI): US first lady Michelle Obama’s toned arms have been seen by some as workout inspiration and by others as symbols of hope.

One such fan is Ann Fox, who works out at the East Bank Club, and loves the first lady’s trademark sleeveless dresses.

“She is setting a wonderful example of a confident woman who is making healthy food choices, exercising regularly, and is comfortable with her body,” the Chicago Suntimes quoted her as saying.

Jennifer Smith, fitness and sports director at the High Ridge YMCA in Rogers Park, gave her expert opinion.

“Michelle Obama’s arms are attractive because they are toned enough for you to see the muscle distinction but not to the point that it takes away from her femininity,” Smith said.

“This proves that women can do weight training exercises and reach their desired results without bulking up,” she stated.

Bonnie Fuller, from the Huffington Post, sees the well-toned arms as nothing less than symbols of the audacity of hope.

“Michelle’s strong arms convey the message that if she can personally hug and lift us out of a lousy economy and a lack of top health care or education for everyone, she will,” Fuller said.

Gretchen Collins, fitness director at the East Bank Club, has advised that in order to get the great look one would really have to workout hard.

“You need to have a low body fat percentage,” she said.

Adding: “You’ve got to work the whole package, with full-body strength training, good nutrition and cardio, cardio, cardio.” (ANI)

Oprah Winfrey to stop Yo-yo dieting to lose weight

London, Jan 26 (ANI): Oprah Winfrey has said that she is planning to lose weight in 2009 again, and the first step towards reaching her goal is-stop Yo-yo dieting.

Oprah Winfrey left people shocked when she appeared at President Barack Obama’s inauguration looking bulkier than ever

The talk show queen has been famous for her on and off weight battles, and now the 5ft 6ins star has admitted that she would hit 14st 2lb.
“How did I let this happen? If you can’t fit into your clothes it means the fat won. I am mad at myself. I am embarrassed,” the Mirror quoted her as saying, after she admitted that she’d piled on nearly three stone.

However, the 54-year-old chat queen insisted that she was determined to change.

Talking in her own magazine, O, Oprah said: “This is the year of hopefulness. My goal is to get healthy and strong and fit.”

The star went for on and off dieting in the late eighties and nineties, which didn’t help her much and she pledged: “I’ll never diet again.”

Later, she went on to serious work out under personal trainer Bob Greene but she couldn’t get off the weight-loss rollercoaster and was even diagnosed with a hormonal imbalance known as hypothyroidism, which often leads to weight gain.

Nutritionist Carina Norris explained Oprah’s condition saying: “Yo-yo dieting is a hard habit to break. Women like Oprah get stuck in a cycle of one moment being incredibly good and not having any treats and the next, bingeing. Before they know it, they’re back at their original weight – often heavier. And then they get a wake-up call, perhaps in an unflattering holiday photo. Then they start furiously dieting again and the pattern repeats.”

And now that Oprah has openly confessed that her food problem is back, and by doing that she’s prepared the ground for a determined effort to lose weight.

Oprah now says: “My goal isn’t to be thin – this time it’s for my body to be the weight it can hold, to be healthy. I have meals that I plan out every week and repeat them.

She suggested that to lose weight one has to fight their inner demons, saying: “The weight is always representative of something other than what it looks like. You don’t have a weight problem; you have a self-care, self-love problem. But to really make a change you must take a look at yourself.”

She also said that one should find time for exercise.

“I’ve said for years how much I dislike it. But I now realise that there is absolutely no way that I am going to be able to maintain my weight without regular cardio,” she said.

Oprah has said she wants everyone who’s struggling with weight to make himself or herself a priority this year.

She said: “Look at falling off the wagon as I am – not as a weight issue but a love issue. Like all of you, I’m really good at giving love to other people but we all need to make 2009 the year we give ourselves as much love and support as we give to others.” (ANI)

“I’m not the sort of person… who can say ‘I’m completely happy whatever shape I’m in,’” Contactmusic quoted Thompson as telling More magazine.

She added: “That means I have to work hard to regain a shape I’m happy with, which is very feminine. I’ve never been a skinny monkey.”

Talking of her new regime, she said: “It’s a combination of stuff: cardio and running around until you start to sweat and go red in the face.” (ANI)
