FIFA match related stress could cause heart attack

London, May 3 (ANI): Football match related stress could trigger off a heart attack say doctors, especially during this year’s World Cup.

Ardent football followers get so excited while watching the match that the overexertion could lead to a cardiac arrest.

The stress factor is not just because of the outcome of the match but also due to the nail-biting moments during the match.

German Doctor Ute Wilbert-Lampen studied 4,279 heart attacks in or around Munich after the 2006 FIFA World Cup in Germany.

“The result is not important. Rather, the vital factor is how stressful and tense the match is,” she told Daily Star.

Professor Hoosen Vawda, of the South African KwaZulu-Natal University, told fans to stay detached at the FIFA World Cup tournament, which kicks off on June 11.

“The event is meant to be enjoyed in the spirit of sportsmanship, not to die for,” he advised. (ANI)

“Human guinea pig” scientist sequences own genome to predict health risks!

London, Apr 30 (ANI): A “human guinea pig” boffin is the world’s first person to have all his DNA screened for unknown disease risk factors.

Professor Stephen Quake, an American scientist, subjected himself to the test.

His test results revealed heightened risks of heart disease, cardiac arrest, diabetes and prostate cancer, as well as information about likely responses to certain medicines, reports The Daily Express.

Quake said: “We”re at the dawn of a new age of genomics. Information like this will enable doctors to deliver personalised health care like never before.”

Quake, from Stanford University School of Medicine, came in the limelight last year when he used new technology to sequence his own genome, or genetic code, for less than 50,000 US dollars.

The new study, published in The Lancet medical journal, used Quake”s personal genetic data to make predictions about the fate of his health. (ANI)

Possible new cause of cardiac arrest discovered

London, April 20 (ANI): A new disorder associated with heart problems that stems from a genetic defect in the protein glycogenin has been discovered by scientists.

In a worst case scenario, disruption of this protein”s function can lead to cardiac arrest, which is precisely what happened with the young man whose case triggered the investigation at Sahlgrenska University Hospital at the University of Gothenburg, Sweden, that led to a brand new diagnosis.

The new study mentions how a young man suffered a cardiac arrest but survived thanks to the work of the ambulance paramedics. A study at Sahlgrenska University Hospital led to the discovery of not only a new disorder but also how a defect in the protein glycogenin can lead to an energy crisis in the muscle cells.

This protein”s job is to initiate the build-up of glycogen that constitutes the muscle cells” carbohydrate reserves. The glycogenin starts the actual process by building up a short chain of around ten sugar molecules, which can then be turned into glycogen with the help of other enzymes. During strong muscular work the sugar molecules in the glycogen are used to create energy.

“The disorder is characterised by an inability to form the initial chain of sugar molecules. This leads to a shortage of glycogen and an energy crisis in the muscle cells that can result in cardiac arrest,” says Anders Oldfors, who headed up the research team and is a professor at the Sahlgrenska Academy and consultant at Sahlgrenska University Hospital.

The study also reveals how muscle cells that have a severe congenital defect can adjust and find other ways of sourcing energy, though it may not be sufficient in all situations.

“We”re hoping that our continued research in the field will provide answers to how the change in the glycogenin causes an inability to start accumulating carbohydrates in the muscle cells,” Oldfors says.

Clinically, the discovery means that this disorder must be considered as a diagnosis when investigating heart problems.

The study has been published in the New England Journal of Medicine. (ANI)

Hospital baby death shocked nurse

A coronial inquest in Darwin has heard a 13-month-old baby appeared happy and was smiling hours before she died at Royal Darwin Hospital.

The baby, who cannot be named, was born almost three months premature.

She was born blind, had bowel disease and suffered ongoing eating problems.

In February last year, she was being treated for weight loss at Darwin Hospital.

Lynelle Hicks, the child protection officer assigned to the baby’s case, told the coroner she visited the baby and her mother on February 18th last year.

She said the baby appeared “very bright, happy [and] smiling” and had a “lovely rapport” with her mother.

But by the morning, she had stopped breathing and suffered cardiac arrest and died.

The inquest heard this was because her dehydration was not adequately managed.

The baby was being treated for a condition known as small gut syndrome.

The court hear it was expected she would be released into the care of foster parents in late February.

Clinical nurse specialist Eileen Sporle told the inquest the baby had had a couple of loose bowel actions and was given rehydration fluid.

She said when the nurse came to work the next day, she was shocked to hear the baby had died.

The inquest is examining whether the hospital’s care was sufficient.

MJ’s dad to file wrongful death suit against Conrad Murray

London, Mar 25 (ANI): Michael Jackson”s father is planning to file a wrongful death lawsuit against the King of Pop”s personal physician Dr. Conrad Murray.

It is alleged that Murray administered the drugs that ultimately killed the ‘Thriller’ star.

Murray has pleaded not guilty to one count of involuntary manslaughter after Los Angeles prosecutors charged him with administering the powerful anaesthetic Propofol to Jackson minutes before the singer went into cardiac arrest last June (09) and died.

Now, Joe Jackson wants Murray to be punished for his alleged medical malpractice.

And he has instructed his lawyer Brian Oxman to begin proceedings to file the wrongful death claims in Los Angeles County Superior Court next week.

In an interview with TMZ.com, Oxman said that the Jackson family patriarch is seeking an unspecified amount of punitive damages, economic support, loss of companionship and loss of consortium.

However, the legal notice has angered Murray”s lawyer Ed Chernoff, who is confident any such claim will not be awarded.

“That”s like throwing a bucket of water on a man drowning in the ocean,” the Daily Express quoted him as saying. (ANI)

And Janet has admitted that she found the emotional scene therapeutic after a tough 2009, which saw her split from longtime boyfriend Jermaine Dupri and loss of the King of Pop.

“You have to dig deep but there was some stuff that was right there for me. Stuff that had just happened, with my brother passing, and also relationships, experiencing exactly that,” the Daily Star quoted her as saying.

iPhones app that guides medics through heart attack treatment launched

London, March 17 (ANI): A mobile phone application that guides medics through treatment for heart attack victims has been launched.

Daniel Low, consultant anaesthetist at the Royal United Hospital in Bath, designed the iResus application for iPhones, which aims to reduce the risk of human error by prompting clinicians through a checklist of things to do when resuscitating critically ill patients in or near cardiac arrest.

The prompts depend on the age and condition of the patient and a more basic version is also available for first aiders.

Almost 2,500 people – mainly UK doctors – downloaded the application in the first week, and since then it has been downloaded by 1,200 people a week.

Low was inspired to create the application after working alongside air ambulance helicopter pilots who previously worked for the military.

He saw that during in-flight emergencies, airmen would refer to instruction cards known as flight reference charts, which guided them through the crisis and helped to reduce the margin for human error.

””Even though doctors and nurses are trained to deal with someone having a cardiac arrest, it”s not a situation they will face every day and I thought both medics and patients would benefit from an application such as this,”” the Telegraph quoted him as saying.

The programme was produced in collaboration with iMobileMedic.com and the Resuscitation Council (UK). (ANI)

MJ ‘underwent sperm count-boosting op’

Washington, Sept 4 (ANI): Michael Jackson reportedly turned to medical experts after suffering repeated injuries to his groin area in his youth and underwent a painful procedure to boost his chances of having children.

The injuries believed to have resulted from beatings given by his father Joe Jackson during his childhood days, reports Contactmusic.

Gossip blogger Perez Hilton said: “These injuries prompted Michael to visit a doctor while he was married to Lisa Marie Presley, in order to undergo a procedure that would increase his sperm count.

“We understand that the operation was not only extremely painful, but also may have been unsuccessful, leaving it impossible for Michael to father any children.”

It has been claimed that the King of Pop- who has three children, Prince Michael I, 12, Paris, 11, and seven-year-old Prince Michael II, who is also known as ‘Blanket’ – reportedly confided in his physician Dr. Arnold Klein that he was left infertile from vicious beatings handed out by his father when he was younger and asked the medic to donate sperm to father his kids.

Homicide officially listed on MJ’s death certificate

London, September 2 (ANI): Michael Jackson’s death certificate has been reissued, officially stating the star’s death as homicide.

The new document now apparently says the King of Pop died of “acute intoxication” caused by powerful anaesthetic Propofol.

The singer’s personal physician Dr. Conrad Murray, who is at the centre of a manslaughter probe, previously confessed giving the drug to the insomniac star to help him sleep.

The story comes after the Los Angeles County Coroner concluded Propofol and the sedative lorazepam as the primary drugs responsible for Jackson’s death.

The re-issued certificate lists “acute Propofol intoxication” as the main cause of death and “benzodiazepine effect” as a significant contributor.

MJ’s heart attack was kept secret for 3hrs after his death, says pal

London, Aug 31 (ANI): The fact that Michael Jackson had suffered a heart attack was kept secret for as long as three hours to cover-up the real cause of his death, says a friend of the late superstar.

Dr. Steven Hoefflin, a friend of the singer, revealed the latest twist after speaking to medics involved in Jackson’s case.

“They say he had lividity, which means his blood had already sunk to the back of his body. This indicates Michael’s heart had stopped hours earlier,” the Mirror quoted him as saying.

It is also believed that the late King of Pop’s dead body was then moved to his bedroom so that the police would think that he killed himself with a fatal dose of the drug Propofol.

According to reports, experts at the coroner’s office believe that Jackson was moved after his heart attack, as they discovered disruptions in the pattern of “livor mortis” on his body.

Purple marks on his body show where blood has settled in a lifeless body, which usually takes at least five hours to become apparent.

Forensic pathologist Dr. Cyril Wecht, not involved in the Jackson case, said: “If someone carried the body from one room to another, the livor would be ‘broken’ where contact with the body was made. If one person held his ankles and the other held him under his arms, there would be corresponding white interruptions of livor mortis in those spots.”

Retired FBI special agent Ted Gunderson, who has independently monitored the case, said that the new evidence pointed to a “massive cover-up” by Dr. Conrad Murray, the late King of Pop’s personal doctor.

It may be recalled that the coroner has ruled that the ‘Thriller’ hit-maker was a victim of homicide after the strong sedative caused his cardiac arrest, and that investigators are probing whether Dr. Murray had any role in his death.

Gunderson asked: “Did Murray try to fool people into thinking Jackson died on the way to hospital in the hope an autopsy could be avoided? If so, it didn’t work, which is why he had to confess to administering Propofol.”

Meanwhile, Murray, 56, has denied mistreating Jackson. (ANI)

MJ killed himself by mistake with drug overdose, claims personal doc

London, August 30 (ANI): Michael Jackson accidentally took his own life by administering an overdose of anaesthetic on himself, his personal physician will reportedly claim.

Dr Conrad Murray and his legal team will allegedly defend themselves claiming the King of Pop topped up his own drip with powerful sedative Propofol.

Murray, who is at the centre of a manslaughter probe, previously confessed hooking up the insomniac star to a drip with the drug to help him sleep, reports the News of the World.

The medic alleged he administered just 25 milligrams of Propofol into the bloodstreamof the singer.

He will purportedly claim that Jackson later re-set the machine to increase the dosage that sent him into a cardiac arrest.

Medical experts have, however, cast a shadow of doubt over Murray’s claims, saying 25mgs of Propofol would not have been enough to put Jackson to sleep for sometime.

Dr Kathleen London, a US family practice physician, said: “Murray says he only gave 25mgs of Propofol. I don’t believe that. In order to induce sleep, 40mgs is needed.”

The Los Angeles Country Coroner recently ruled Jackson’s death as homicide caused by acute intoxication from Propofol and other conditions. (ANI)
