London, May 15 (ANI): In a grim advertisement showing how life could change if he flops at the World Cup, Manchester United and England striker Wayne Rooney is seen quitting football, growing a belly and living in squalor, unable to accept his shattered dream.

The Nike commercial, which is to hit screens across the globe next Saturday, features a host of aces, including Didier Drogba (Chelsea), Cristiano Ronaldo (Real Madrid), Ronaldinho (A C Milan) and Fabregas (Arsenal).

Police probe caravan fire death

Police have launched an investigation into the death of an elderly man in a caravan fire in the South Burnett region of southern Queensland last month.

Robert Pitman, 77, died in a fire that consumed his caravan and a shed at Gin Gin.

The cause of the fire and Mr Pitman’s death is still uncertain.

Police say they are also investigating a series of suspicious bank transactions on Mr Pitman’s account in the days leading up to his death.

Four injured, highway blocked after rollover

Four people have been injured after a car with a caravan rolled over near Tennant Creek.

Officers say a passing driver notified police about the accident on the Stuart Highway, 70 kilometres north of Tennant Creek, about 11am.

An ambulance is taking all four people to hospital.

One of them has serious injuries.

Police say the Stuart Highway could be blocked for up to five hours and are urging motorists to avoid the area.

Mining blockade comes down

A blockade to stop mining company BHP Billiton from accessing a Caroona district property will be torn down today.

It was originally set up by local farmer Tim Duddy, 612 days ago, to prevent BHP exploring for coal on his land south-west of Tamworth.

Mr Duddy says BHP’s access agreement to his land is invalid, after a recent court ruling that voided two similar agreements on the Liverpool Plains.

He says it will be a ceremony attended by many local farmers and politicians.

“The blockade, it’s got a caravan, notice boards, a little hut and there’s actually some vehicles parked across the road and we will be driving the vehicles off and planting trees to mark the site where this extraordinary event took place,” he said.

“It has been an incredible community effort.”

Driver survives caravan roll

A 48-year-old man has escaped serious injury after rolling his car and caravan on the Brand Highway near the west coast.

The motorist was about 40 kilometres south of Dongara yesterday afternoon when a gust of wind apparently caused his caravan to sway from side to side.

The driver tried to regain control but both his vehicle and the caravan flipped into a ditch on the side of the road.

He was taken by ambulance to Dongara Hospital where he was treated for shock and later released.

Toyota and BMW looking for progress at Bahrain GP

Hamburg – The Toyota and BMW-Sauber Formula One teams are looking to challenge at the front of the grid in this weekend’s Bahrain Grand Prix in Sakhir after mixed starts to a so far unpredictable 2009 season.

Both teams will be hoping to leave the rain in Malaysia and China behind them and instead take on the challenge of heat and dust in the Arab Emirate.

Toyota will be the more confident of the two teams after Timo Glock managed a seventh-place finish in China on Sunday to lie fourth in the overall drivers’ standings, 11 points behind surprise leader Jenson Button of Brawn GP.

The German finished out of the points in ninth last year but is expecting better things this time around.

“Last year I was pretty unlucky in Bahrain because I had to back off with a small technical issue when I was sure I would score my first points for the team,” said Glock.

“But this season has started in a much better way compared to 2008 and I am confident I can continue to show that good performance.”

Toyota team-mate Jarno Trulli narrowly trails Glock in the overall standings but managed sixth in China, the same place he achieved last season in Bahrain.

“I am looking forward to racing in Bahrain after the tests we had there over the winter. Bahrain was the first chance I had to really test the TF109 in dry conditions and I knew immediately we had a competitive package, which has proved to be the case now the season has started,” said Trulli.

“In testing the car was strong in Bahrain so I have a good feeling for this weekend and I think we can be competitive.”

While Toyota can claim to have maintained competitiveness in China, it was another disappointing race for the fancied BMW outfit, with Nick Heidfeld only 12th, one place ahead of team-mate Robert Kubica.

BMW’s only points so far this season came in the rain-interrupted Malaysian GP, when Heidfeld finished second behind Button.

Kubica, who took his first career pole in Bahrain last season before finishing third in the race itself, said while he found the Bahrain circuit “not really challenging” he was still looking forward to racing there and finally getting some points on the board.

“The Bahrain International Circuit has a couple of long straights and three characteristically low-speed corners that require heavy braking,” said the Pole.

“Last year we performed quite well in Bahrain – after securing pole position in qualifying I managed to finish the race on the podium.”

BMW motorsport director Mario Theissen, meanwhile, said he hoped to bring the first major overseas stint of the season to a positive end before the F1 caravan moves to Europe for the Spanish GP.

“It also marks the end of the second set of back-to-back races within five weeks,” said Theissen.

“After our appearance in Shanghai we are now heading for another region that is important to BMW. For us as a manufacturer in the premium sector the Middle East is also a very significant market.” (dpa)

Nepal to debut at Cannes film fest with ‘Chaukath’

Kathmandu, April 13 (IANS) Almost a decade after Nepal made a mark in the international film arena, a debutant Nepali director hopes to create a stir at the Cannes Film Festival starting May 13.

Journalist-turned-filmmaker Dipak Rauniyar made a splash in December when his debut film ‘Chaukath’ (Threshold) received rave reviews at the Kathmandu International Mountain Film Festival.

Now ‘Chaukath’ will be screened during the 12-day Cannes Film Festival in the non-competitive category in the short film section.

It will be Nepal’s first entry at Cannes.

The half-an-hour film, that was awarded the third prize by the jury, is about the status of women in Nepal’s conservative Terai plains in the south where sons are preferred to daughters and women are expected to stay at home and devote themselves to housework.

Rauniyar, who worked as a journalist in Biratnagar town in east Nepal, came to Kathmandu in 2001.

‘Chaukath’ revolves around two women from different backgrounds – a divorcee from the hills and a timid housewife who is not even called by her name but is known by the name of the village she hails from.

The film raises questions about the restoration of democracy in Nepal when women are still destined to live as the second sex.

Made on a budget of NRS 100,000, the film has been scripted by Rauniyar himself and Asha Magarati, who also plays one of the two central women characters.

Nepal made a mark at the Academy Awards with ‘Caravan’, the film made in mountainous north Nepal by European Eric Valli in the late 1990s, that received an Oscar nomination in the Best Foreign Film category.

Ponting warns players not be distracted by IPL riches

Durban (South Africa), Apr. 3 (ANI): Australia captain Ricky Ponting has warned his players not to be distracted by the build-up for the Indian Premier League (IPL) that is to be played in South Africa.

The IPL caravan for the five-week event is about to hit town, led by Shane Warne’s defending champions Rajasthan Royals.

“We are the number two-ranked one-day team in the world and we’d love to see ourselves back in the number one ranking by the end of this series. They will be the motivating factors for us, nothing to do with the IPL,” Fox Sports quoted Ponting, as saying.

“All the money and contracts have been sorted anyway. Now it’s just a matter of representing your country the best way that you possibly can. That’s what we’ll certainly be trying to achieve over the next couple of weeks,” he added.

“I’d like to think that the guys have solely got their minds on what they need to have their minds on for the next couple of weeks,” the Australian skipper said.

“The IPL will start up once our tournament is over. Whenever you are representing Australia, if you have a clouded mind on anything at all then you are not going to play your best cricket. I haven’t heard that around the group, any talk about the IPL whatsoever,” he concluded. (ANI)

‘British Fritzl’ kept 15-year-old as his sex slave

London, Mar 22 (ANI): A 36-year-old man, dubbed the “English Fritzl”, chained a 15-year-old schoolgirl to his caravan and kept her as his personal sex slave, it has emerged.

Scrap dealer David Cooper even forced her to take part in orgies.

He put the girl through a four-month ordeal of abuse as her mum searched for her.

Cooper forced the teenage girl to indulge in group sex with him, his girlfriend Kerry Hobson, 28, and another man, then watched as his lover shaved off the schoolgirl’s pubic hair.

It was when the teen tried to flee that he tied her to a concrete block beside his gipsy caravan with a motorbike chain.

Her ordeal ended when police raided the van on a remote site near Bridlington, East Yorks, looking for drugs and found the girl.

Cooper now has been jailed for nine years at Hull Crown Court after admitting eight specimen charges of sexual activity with a girl under 16 and one of child cruelty.

Hobson was jailed for three-and-a-half years, reports The Daily Star.

Passing sentence, Judge Michael Mettyear told Cooper: “You treated this girl like your own personal sex toy.”

Last night the girl’s mum said: “He is an English Josef Fritzl – every parent’s worst nightmare.”

The case draws similarity to Fritzl case, where the Austrian man caged his daughter in a rat-infested dungeon for 24 years and fathered seven children by her, six of whom survived.

Josef is now in jail serving life sentence. (ANI)

Luxury Caravan Has Sports Car Parking Dock In Its Belly

Luxury Caravan Has Sports Car Parking Dock In Its BellyPoor Madoff scandal rich victims. Pity them, because now it’s their time to scale back to a trailer park. Probably in this luxury caravan, with its own built-in parking dock for their red sports car.

Looking at how tacky and yacht-like it is, I bet they will feel at home. Plus, they will be able to watch the Wheel of Fortune while eating nachos with cheese on top of their red Mercedes. [Sightly Warped]
