Sir Mick Jagger calls for marijuana to be legalised on Isle of Man

London, May 20 (ANI): Rolling Stones lead singer Sir Mick Jagger has called for cannabis to be legalised on the Isle of Man to gauge whether it prevents drug-related violence.

In an interview on American television, the 66 year-old British rock star suggested a trial scheme should be conducted on the channel island ‘to see what happens’.

The singer, who was convicted of possessing narcotics in the 1960s, urged officials to legalise cannabis only on the island, and only for a limited time, to test whether such a ban would work.

“The whole question of legalising drugs is fraught,” the Telegraph quoted him as telling the Larry King Live show on CNN.

“You usually try these things out in very small places. You know, like you try a new product out in a small kind of society or an island somewhere.

“In England they always try out new mobile phones in the Isle of Man. They”ve got a captive society. So I said, you should try – you should try the legalisation of all drugs on the Isle of Man and see what happens,” he added. (ANI)

Illegal opium cultivation on rise in Himachal Pradesh

Kullu (Himachal Pradesh), May 16 (ANI): Illegal opium cultivation has reportedly increased in Himachal Pradesh, as the towns of Kullu and Mandi have become centres of opium traders in the region.

The illegal cultivation of poppy and cannabis has increased here with each passing year, particularly in the regions bordering Shimla district.

This has posed as a threat to the credibility of the state government and the police, as critics are of the view that top brass in the police administration have failed to tackle this social hazard.

Chief Minister Prem Kumar Dhumal has, however, said that besides awareness campaigns, efforts have been initiated to curb this menace.

“The state government is taking steps and we have started a movement to curb the cultivation of opium in the valley. The authorities are also taking help from the Narcotics Bureau to stop the illegal cultivation of opium,” said Dhumal.

The estimated land used for cultivation of opium in these areas is believed to be in the range of 175 hectares.

The estimated dry opium produced from this cultivated area is over 2000 kilograms, which is worth Rs four billion in the international market.

“The detection figures are on the rise. In 2009, first time Mandi crossed a triple digit figure of 110 cases with 112 kilograms of contraband. This year, the figure till March 31 had already crossed 100 cases,” said Sonal Agnihotri, Superintendent Of Police, Mandi District. (ANI)

N-W man charged over Christmas break-ins

A 41-year-old Devonport man has been charged over drug trafficking and burglaries in Tasmania’s north-west.

Police have seized property worth more than $80,000 along with cannabis and amphetamines.

The break-ins occurred in Devonport, Ulverstone and Latrobe over the Christmas period.

Police say the property includes stolen service medals taken from a Devonport home in December.

Police blitz nabs drink drivers

Police say they caught a number of drug and alcohol-affected drivers during a weekend traffic operation in Geraldton.

More than 1,000 motorists were tested as part of an operation organised to coincide with the Geraldton Cup.

Ten drivers were charged with drink driving offences while three were caught driving with cannabis in their system.

Mid-west Gascoyne Inspector Garry Cunningham says, while most people who attended race round festivities did the right thing, some were not so sensible.

“It was a ranged spectrum from a novice driver, so that’s someone with a brand new licence, still having alcohol in their system, to a number of people that were driving under the influence, so they had consumed considerable amounts of alcohol and still got behind the wheel of their vehicle, so the message probably still isn’t getting out to the public,” he said.

Fatal harbour crash accused affected by drugs, alcohol

One of two Sydney men accused of being in charge of a boat that collided with a trawler, killing six people, has admitted taking drugs and said he had never steered a boat before.

A court has heard that barman Percy Small was handed the wheel of the boat by skipper Matthew Reynolds before it collided with a fishing trawler on Sydney Harbour in 2008.

Six of their 14 friends on the boat were killed.

Small, 26, has told the New South Wales Supreme Court that he had been drinking and using cannabis and cocaine throughout the day and did not have a boat licence.

But he said he “felt OK” and was “having a good time.”

Small said he was affected by the drugs and alcohol but could not say to what degree.

He said he had never been behind the wheel of a boat before, but took the wheel after skipper Matthew Reynolds told him to “sit here” .

The 26-year-old said his view of the trawler was obscured by Reynolds and that he also “wasn’t looking.”

Small broke down in the witness box as he spoke of the mental anguish he has suffered.

Small and Reynolds are on trial for the crash near Bradley’s Head in Sydney Harbour in May 2008.

Matthew Reynolds, who has chosen not to give evidence, is charged with six counts of manslaughter.

Percy Small is charged with six counts of dangerous navigation occasioning death.

Both have pleaded not guilty.

The trial before Justice Michael Grove continues.

Police crack two-state, NT cannabis network

Police say they have dismantled a major cannabis distribution ring in the remote Aboriginal communities of South Australia, the Northern Territory and Western Australia.

Port Augusta police in SA say there was an 18-month investigation.

It is alleged the drug was being sent from Adelaide via Mintabie.

Seven men and a woman between 39 and 56 have been arrested at Mintabie, Andamooka, Adelaide and Callington in SA.

Superintendent James Blandford says dismantling the drug ring will significantly curb the availability of cannabis in the remote region.

“[There was] a significant amount of cannabis to the central desert region, particularly the APY Lands, but also the remote communities in Western Australia and the Northern Territory,” he said.

Police say they seized four kilograms of dried cannabis and $11,000 in cash.

Court jails drug trafficker

The Victorian County Court has sentenced a 46-year-old St Arnaud man to a jail term for drugs trafficking.

Andrew Harold Milton pleaded guilty to charges of trafficking, possessing and using cannabis, as well as dealing with the proceeds of crime.

Police say on January 5 last year they searched a bush block near St Arnaud and found almost eight kilograms of cannabis and sets of electronic scales.

They say when searching his parent’s St Arnaud home, where Milton lives, they found $82,000 in cash.

A psychological report found Milton has an “inadequate personality”.

It said Milton was not a career criminal but a “clueless criminal”.

Judge Murphy sentenced Milton to a total of three years in prison, to serve a minimum of 18 months.

‘Sex symbol’ tag hurts me, says Megan Fox

London, Aug 24 (ANI): Movie siren Megan Fox says that she gets hurt every time she is called a sex symbol.

She told the Daily Star Sunday: “The attention, that other people are telling you that you are beautiful, only feeds insecurities and sort of makes it unbearable.”

The Transformers beauty also admitted that she regularly smokes cannabis and has therapy to help her beat the sex demons that have tormented her since childhood.

Fox blames her ultra-strict religious upbringing for her deep insecurities.

She said: “I was raised Pentecostal, which is one of the most extreme denominations of Christianity that exists. Everything is evil and wrong and will send you to hell.

“So I had lots of talks about how sex was evil, sex was bad.”

However, she said that her role in her new film Jennifer’s Body had helped. She plays a teen who becomes a man-eater after being possessed by a sex-mad spirit.

She admitted: “I get to exorcise my demons through her. She has really deep, unfriendly insecurities which I can relate to.”

And when asked how she escapes her torment at home, she said: “I usually smoke weed and watch Tori and Dean: Home Sweet Hollywood.” (ANI)

Obama says marijuana can’t give sinking US economy a high

Washington, Mar. 27 (ANI): President Barack Obama has told an online crowd that legalizing marijuana won’t do any good to the sinking American economy.

Obama was drawn into the debate over legalizing pot when the cannabis crowd flooded the first-ever Internet-based presidential Town Hall meeting.

“The answer is no, I don’t think that is a good strategy to grow our economy,” Obama said with a laugh when asked if he would legalize the wacky terbacky.

The pot legalization issue is not a frivolous one. California Assemblyman Tom Ammiano introduced a bill calling for legalizing the drug and regulating it in much the same way alcohol is regulated. The California Board of Equalization, which collects taxes, estimates California’s possible revenue from doing so at 1.3 billion dollars per year.

During rest of the forum, Obama continued to talk about his plans to fix the economy – including what he said would be a “painful” and “drastic” restructuring of the U.S. auto industry.

“We will provide them with some help. I know that it is not popular to provide help to autoworkers, or to auto companies. But my job is to measure the cost of allowing these auto companies just to collapse, versus us figuring out can they come up with a viable plan?” (ANI)

Soho has more fake prostitutes and drug dealers than real ones

London, Feb 28 (ANI): A senior police officer claims that there are more fake prostitutes and drug dealers than real ones on the streets of Soho in London’s West End.oho was once known as a notorious area for its sex shops, but now while there are still some prostitutes who work inside some premises, the ones on the streets are almost all fake operators.

Det Chief Supt Andy Rowell says that the area has been cleaned-up by the police, but now the danger comes from con artists targeting gullible foreign tourists and out-of-town visitors.

The fake drug dealers pass off boot polish or liquorice as cannabis, and wax wrapped in foil as crack cocaine and aspirin pills, with the markings rubbed off on the side of a matchbox, as tablets.

Where the fake prostitutes are concerned, around 15 of them work together by taking a “deposit for a room” then disappearing, or luring a punter into an alleyway where a male accomplice will relieve them of their cash.

“A lot of visitors are thinking in the past, and these days Soho has been cleaned-up,” the Telegraph quoted Rowell, who is the detective in charge of the area, as saying.

“Yet hundreds of visitors from out of London come to Soho after the theatres have emptied looking for illegal after-hours activities.

“Their image of Soho is sadly out-of-date. We are continuing to step up our efforts at clamping down on these types of crime and we’ve largely succeeded.

“Soho is now a safe place to come and enjoy yourself – but please don’t come looking for drugs and prostitutes. You will almost certainly get something you didn’t expect,” he added. (ANI)

Ecstasy-induced memory difficulties rarely translate into problems in real world

London, February 12 (ANI): An independent body that advises the UK government on drug policy says that ecstasy causes slight memory difficulties and mild depression, but they rarely translate into problems in the real world.

The UK Advisory Council on the Misuse of Drugs (ACMD) came to this conclusion after undertaking the biggest ever review to determine whether ecstasy damages health in the long term.

The review suggests that smaller studies do show that some individuals have problems like weakened immunity and larger memory deficits, but for most people ecstasy seems to be nowhere near as harmful over time as one may have been led to believe.

The committee may soon recommend downgrading ecstasy from a class A drug to a class B, putting it on a par with cannabis in terms of harmfulness.

The ACMD based their review largely on a study they commissioned from Gabriel Rogers and Ruth Garside of the Peninsula Medical School in Exeter, UK. They pulled together all the research from around the world that attempted to assess the health of people who had taken ecstasy, and reanalysed the data from the 110 studies that dealt with long-term effects.

The committee found that compared with non-users, people who took even a small amount of ecstasy at some point consistently performed worse on psychometric tests, which measure mental performance, especially memory, attention, and executive function, which includes decision-making and planning.

The most pronounced effects are on memory, mainly verbal and working memory.

Rogers, however, says that subtle differences in lab tests do not necessarily translate into real-life problems.

“They’re statistically significant, but whether they are clinically significant is another matter,” New Scientist magazine quoted him as saying.

He pointed out that there is little evidence that people are actually affected by the memory and attention deficits picked up in the lab tests.

“They don’t seem to be very big and it is not clear that they have much effect on day-to-day functioning,” he says.

Although people who have taken ecstasy score worse on standard depression tests than those who haven’t, the scores aren’t bad enough to warrant a diagnosis from a doctor.

“There’s no indication that they are drifting out of normal functioning,” says Rogers.

Rogers, however, cautions that it is too soon to give ecstasy the all-clear in the long term, as some effects on health might simply kick in even later.

“It’s possible that ecstasy has horrific consequences later in life. Only time will tell,” he says. (ANI)

Now, Richard Madeley’s daughter gets caught in cannabis scandal

London, Feb 08 (ANI): After Michael Phelps’ infamous marijuana scandal, TV presenters Richard Madeley and Judy Finnigan’s daughter Chloe has been snapped smoking cannabis from a bong.

The shocking picture, showing Chloe taking drugs while sitting between a man’s legs at a boozy party, was taken just weeks before TV’s golden couple publicly boasted how ‘incredibly Anti-drugs’ their kids were.

After the picture was shown to her horrified parents, the family had a showdown meeting at their mansion in leafy Hampstead, North London.

“We’ve obviously spoken to Chloe and whilst we-like most parents-are aware that kids her age sometimes experiment, it is always a bad idea,” News of the World quoted the couple, as saying.

“However, she is an extremely sensible person, and now she knows that too,” they added.

Chloe, who is a showbiz reporter on Richard and Judy’s chat-show New Position, issued an apology, saying: “I am really sorry.

“I was really stupid. I regret doing what I did and have learnt my lesson.

“I am really sorry for any embarrassment I have caused my family,” she added. (ANI)

Mark Spitz “feels bad” for Michael Phelps

Washington, Feb 3 (ANI): Swimming legend Mark Spitz has expressed his distress over Michael Phelps’ cannabis scandal.

The former Olympian whose gold medal world record was smashed by Phelps said that he feels bad for the 23-year-old star.

“As strictly a fan, I feel badly for Michael and the situation he has put himself in,” Usmagazine.com quoted Spitz as saying.

“I think no one would wish this on anyone, especially the person that gave us a summer like no other in 2008.

“I hope this only leads to a better tomorrow for him and his family,” he added.

Phelps was snapped using a bong in a November house party in the University of South Carolina.

However, he has released a statement apologizing for his “regrettable” behaviour. (ANI)

Booklet advices Brit school kids about tips on cannabis use

London, Jan.27 (ANI): School kids in Britain have been given access to a 20-page booklet that provides them with tips on cannabis use.

Titled ‘Know Cannabis’, the booklet, according to The Telegraph, spells out how the drug can make you feel relaxed and makes music ‘sound better’ as well as whether to use bongs or buckets and how to roll a joint.

The paper further goes on to say that it is not until page 14 that the document points out that the drug is illegal but is being handed out to young teenagers preparing for their GCSEs at schools in the North East.

It comes as the drugs were yesterday reclassified from Class C to Class B.

Aimed at youngsters, it includes advice on how best to take the drug.

The booklet begins by telling youngsters to ‘Know the effects, how it is used, the risks, and how to avoid them’.
The booklet is produced by Merseyside-based HIT, which provides ‘social marketing campaigns’ on drugs and alcohol and sexual health, which said it did not mean to encourage drug use and would be happy to listen to any complaints.

The Department for Children Schools and Families said it did not dictate what children were taught about drugs and content of drug education are taken at local level. (ANI)

Drug-runner who filmed himself masturbating at 150 km/h jailed

Melbourne, Jan 7 (ANI): A drug-runner who admitted to police that he had been masturbating while driving at 150 km/h has been sentenced to two months jail.

On July 16 last year, Brendon Alan Erhardt, 39, was pulled over by police, 25km south of Daly Waters.

He told the officers he had been masturbating shortly before being stopped for speeding on the 130km/h stretch of the Stuart Hwy.

He had filmed himself travelling at a speed of 150kmh.

Erhardt was coming back to the Northern Territory from Adelaide, where he had used an inheritance from his dead mother to buy a Holden SV6 and 5kg of cannabis.

In his car, police found 10 packages of cannabis hidden in a blue esky in the boot, two cannabis plants on the back seat, two drug pipes and a loaded .22 rifle.

“(It is) conduct one might expect of a much younger immature person to engage in,” the Age quoted Magistrate Sue Oliver, as telling Darwin Magistrate”s Court.

Erhardt pleaded guilty” to six charges, including carrying an unregistered and loaded firearm, driving dangerously and driving unlicensed.

Magistrate Oliver said his behaviour was strange and humiliating, while sentencing him to two months in prison.

“The circumstances of the driving are bizarre to say the least. And I would have thought it would cause him some embarrassment to have it aired in a public forum,” she said.

Erhardt has been slapped with 2,000-dollar fine and has also been disqualified from driving for six months. (ANI)

UK cops plan crackdown on shops accused of glamorising hookahs

London, January 4 (ANI): Brit police have drawn plans to find a way to deal with law-abiding retailers who showcase drug-related products such as hookahs, after suspecting them of glamorising the banned substances.

According to the Association of Chief Police Officers (Acpo), the businesses, while following the law, tend to advertise “legal alternatives” to cannabis on their windows.

The “head shops” further offered to sell merchandise bearing images of cannabis leaves or marijuana cigarettes, depicting “drug use in a positive light,” reports the Telegraph.

The Acpo were working on new guidelines on how to tackle these “community concerns”, including the possibility of asking owners, working entirely under the law, to put such products off display totally.

Tim Hollis, Acpo drugs spokesman and chief constable of Humberside, said: “There are concerns that head shops make drugs seem legal. It is not illegal for these shops to exist and there are things local authorities and the police can do.

“It is not as simple as making them illegal, but we will be producing good practice guidelines to give ideas on how to solve the problems, because the shops are causing concern for communities.” (ANI)

Morocco boasts success in fighting hashish trade

Rabat, Morocco – The Moroccan authorities managed to cut illegal cannabis production by 65 per cent in 2008, the Interior Ministry said Friday.

Morocco is the world’s second biggest grower after Afghanistan of cannabis, from which hashish is made.

The goal now is to reduce cannabis cultivation land from 60,000 hectares in 2008 to 50,000 hectares this year, the ministry said in a press release.

The government has fought cannabis cultivation by destroying crops and with an information campaign trying to persuade farmers to replace the drug with other crops.

The Moroccan authorities have been accused of failing to develop the economy of the northern Rif region, which relies heavily on cannabis cultivation.

The hashish is smuggled by speedboats to neighbouring Spain, which acts as its gateway to the European market. (dpa)

The golden-voiced mezzo-soprano, who is glad she hasn’t ‘ended up like Amy Winehouse’, admitted that she took cocaine and ecstasy at private parties and in the toilet of a London nightclub.

The 28-year-old, who started taking drugs when she came to London, further said that she decided to make her guilt public intending to warn others off the deadly habit.

“After taking cocaine, I felt absolutely terrible. It was like the worst hangover in the world times ten, times a hundred. And I”d not be in a good mental place afterwards either. I”d feel depressed and paranoid, it was awful,” she added. (ANI)
