McConaughey, girlfriend conceived daughter after last year”s ACM awards

New York, Apr 20 (ANI): Matthew McConaughey revealed a little too much on stage at Sunday night”s Academy of Country Music Awards—he and model girlfriend Camila Alves conceived their daughter after the same ceremony last year.

While presenting the top male vocalist award, McConaughey told the audience about his memorable experience when he attended the award show last year.

“This is my second time here at the ACM awards. I had a really good time last year. Made some new friends, hung out with some old friends, heard some great country music,” the New York Daily News quoted the actor as saying.

“After the show last year, my lady and I … even went back to the hotel and conceived a little lady who is now our daughter. That”s a true story,” he gushed to a cheering audience.

However, as McConaughey divulged the surprising story, Alves bowed her head in embarrassment while laughing at the scenario.

But the actor assured his fans that they won’t be repeating history this year.

“I promise you, me and Camilla are gonna try not to get so lucky this year. Two is enough. We”re flush for awhile,” he said.

The couple, who have been dating since 2006, welcomed daughter Vida Alves McConaughey in January. They also have a son, Levi, who turns 2 in July. (ANI)

Duchess of Cornwall to pen her life story

Washington, April 1 (ANI): The Duchess of Cornwall has revealed that she could be putting pen to paper and writing her life story.

Camilla revealed her writing ambitions in Bath when she opened the new Julian House Charity Shop, which has one of the biggest collection of second-hand books in the country.

“I would love to. My father wrote and my grandmother wrote and if I ever find the time, I’d like to sit down and write my story,” the Daily Express quoted her as saying.

A candid book by the 62-year-old would be the biggest royal blockbuster since Princess Diana secretly authorised Andrew Morton to write the story of her life inside The Firm. (ANI)

‘Prince Charles had three lovers when he and Diana were married’

London, Sept 20 (ANI): In one of her missing letters to the Queen Mother Princess Diana claimed that Prince Charles had three lovers while they were married.

Diana, who died in a car crash in 1997, named Camilla, Aussie Lady Dale Tryon – known as Kanga – and another high society squeeze in the sensational note, reports The Daily Star.

A source close to the royals said: “Diana was in a lot of pain at the time and wanted to damage Charles.

“She knew he was close to his grandmother and wanted to lash out to hurt him.

“She thought that if someone he really respected knew her claims, they might be able to make him change.”

The letter is understood to be one of dozens from Diana to the Queen Mother which were later incinerated by Princess Margaret to protect her mother’s memory. (ANI)

Meet Prince Charles and Camilla, the ‘wedding planners’!

London, Sept 20 (ANI): Prince Charles and wife Camilla are turning wedding planners and “loaning out” their country retreat of Highgrove House to wannabe brides and grooms.

And included in the package will be the royal couple’s shared “expertise”.

Like Charles and Camilla did at their Windsor wedding four years ago, couples will be encouraged to “keep it simple”, say reports.

As per rumours, the first pair to enjoy a “Charles and Camilla wedding” are TV babe Jenni Falconer and her actor fiancé James Midgley, reports The Daily Star.

A royal source said: “Obviously with it being their house they would want control of the event. But they also recognise what a great opportunity it would be to showcase their home.

“Highgrove is an absolutely fantastic building and would make a wonderful venue for a wedding and reception.”

The nine-bedroom country house on a 37-acre estate near Tetbury, Gloucestershire, was bought for Charles in 1980.

A source said: “Charles is hugely proud of Highgrove. It’s a wonderful property and he has spent thousands of pounds on the gardens and grounds. I’m sure by holding weddings there Charles would take great pleasure being the host.

“And he could use them to promote the Duchy Originals organic products he’s involved with.” (ANI)

Prince William lets slip plans for Oz tour

London, July 7 (ANI): Prince William has let slip his plans to go to Australia next year.

The 27-year-old heir to the throne is believed to be planning to go to Australia as an official representative of the Queen at the request of the Foreign Office next spring.

The British Royal’s top-secret plans came to light when he let it slip to an Australian tourist.

William was on an engagement at the Tower of London when he posed for a picture with Camilla Doyle, 15, and asked her where was she from.

The teenager replied: “Melbourne.”

According to British tabloid The Sun, William then said: “Melbourne – I’m visiting there soon.”

However, Clarence House was quick to deny any plans.

William also met youngsters taking part in the Skill Force initiative.

The charity, of which he is patron, aims to help some of the 35,000 teenagers who leave school every year without qualifications. (ANI)

Prince Harry to pay for New York trip ‘out of his own pocket’

London, May 14 (ANI): Prince Harry will reportedly spare taxpayers thousands by paying for his trip to New York out of his own pocket.

The royal will raise money for his Aids charity Sentebale and is allegedly set to host a VIP dinner later this month, reports the Sun.

The 24-year-old will jet to the Big Apple along with a four-strong entourage in business class and the Queen will pick up the tab for his first foreign tour, as per reports.

Harry’s low-maintenance visit was said to be in a stark contrast to the pricey Stateside trips undertaken by his father Charles and uncle Andrew.

Charles and Camilla left a 330,000-pound bill after taking a private jet to New York four years ago, while Andrew raked up a 118,440 tab when he hired a plane to fly across the States last year. (ANI)

Joe Jonas ‘on love-nest hunt’

Washington, May 7 (ANI): Joe Jonas is so head over heels in love with sweetheart Camilla Belle that he’s looking for a love-nest for the couple to escape to.

The 19-year-old, who shares a Hollywood pad with his Jonas Brothers bandmates Kevin and Nick, is desperate for more privacy and therefore, is looking for a pad in Los Angeles, according to reports.

A pal tells Star magazine, “(The Jonas Brothers’ home is) too crowded and inconvenient for Camilla. They’re looking for somewhere that’s super-private.”

However, Joe may face opposition from his family, reports Contactmusic.

The source added: “His parents are against the idea of Joe getting a condo for himself, though. They want the boys to do everything together.”

Jonas and Belle, 22, have been dating since they met on the set of the band’s video Love Bug late last year. (ANI)

Duchess of Cornwall’s private portrait goes on display

London, May 4 (ANI): A private portrait of the Duchess of Cornwall is going on public display this week.

The annual exhibition of the Royal Society of Portrait Painters had obtained the painting from Prince Charles.

The canvas, which usually graces the walls of Clarence House, depicts a smiling Camilla, glowing in smooth skin.

Artist Susan Crawford, whose expertise lies in painting horses and human portraits, painted the informal image last year.

“Having known the Duchess and her family for many years I wanted to bring out the informal side of her character, her adaptability and above all her sense of humour,” the Daily Express quoted Crawford as saying.

“She inherited many of these qualities from her father, Bruce Shand, of whom I was very fond,” she added.

RSPP spokesman Richard Fitzwilliams further said: “There’s a charm in this portrait, also a humanity and a sense of humour. It’s a striking image.” (ANI)

Camilla’s throne for sale on eBay

London, Apr 18 (ANI): A pub landlady is all set to make a ‘Royal’ deal by auctioning Camilla’s throne – a toilet seat used by the Duchess of Cornwall – on eBay.

Landlady Chris Azerkane, who runs the pub with husband Rafai, hopes that the loo lid would get a good bidding from Royal fanatics.

Chris, 52, revealed that Camilla used the seat after she unexpectedly turned at her door and asked to use the toilet in her bar – Hare and Hounds in Framfield, East Sussex.

“I was in my white rags – I must have looked a real state. The first I knew about it was when a load of posh cars started turning up in our car park – big Audis and Land Rovers,” the Daily Star quoted Chris as saying.

“As soon as I saw her hair, I knew it was Camilla – so I rushed to the front door and unlatched it.

“I said: ‘Why didn’t you tell me you were coming?’ – thinking that was what you are supposed to do.

“She said: ‘Hello, we’ve just come down from Gloucester. Do you think I could use your loo?’” she added.

Chris, the mum-of-three, said that her “legs turned to jelly” before she ushered her VIP guest into the bar and showed her the way to the ladies.

Chris added: “I told her June, our cleaner, had been in and done a good job. I then asked what she was doing here and she explained she was attending a funeral at the village church for her friend, Lady Mary Askew.”

After using the loo, the Duchess returned to the bar and asked if Chris had any sloe gin.

“Unfortunately I didn’t – so she had a Stone’s ginger wine instead. She wasn’t with Charles but she looked beautiful in a really smart coat,” said Chris.

And now, Chris is auctioning the toilet seat to raise money for the Royal Brompton and Kings College Hospitals, in London, where her 16-month-old grandson Omar is being treated. (ANI)

Prince Charles and Camilla to visit Berlin on German trip

London – Britain’s Prince Charles and his wife Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall, will pay a visit to Germany and Italy later this month, the royal palace said Monday.

The couple will go to Berlin and Potsdam, the historic Prussian seat of power just outside the German capital. They will also visit the Neue Museum, recently-restored by a British architect, and the Allied Museum in Berlin to mark the 60th anniversary of the Berlin airlift by western wartime allies.

A statement said Prince Charles, 60, will speak on the urgent need to address climate change, one of the issues he has warned must not be forgotten in the current pre-occupation with economic recession.

The German visit on April 29 and 30 will be preceded by a trip to Venice and Rome, where the couple – who are both divorcees – will receive and audience with Pope Benedict XVI.

Iowa first Midwest U.S. state to allow gay marriage

The Iowa Supreme Court on Friday struck down a decade-old law that barred gays from marrying, making the state the first in the U.S. heartland to allow same-sex marriages.

Opponents vowed to begin the difficult process of amending the Iowa constitution to overturn the ruling, while supporters said it may encourage other states to allow gay men and women to marry.

“We won. Not only that, it is unanimous and you are getting married,” said Camilla Taylor of Lambda Legal, speaking at a Des Moines hotel to the six same-sex couples who brought the original lawsuit in 2005. The news set off a round of cheers, tears and hugs.

The ruling makes Iowa the third U.S. state, after Connecticut and Massachusetts, that currently allows same sex couples to marry. California briefly allowed gay marriage, but rescinded it in a November 2008 referendum. The ruling leaves 43 states with laws explicitly prohibiting such marriages, including 29 with constitutional amendments restricting marriage to one man and one woman.

In the Iowa case, Varnum v. Brien, the couples sued Polk County Recorder of Deeds Timothy Brien for refusing to grant them marriage licenses.

A district court judge sided with the couples in August 2007, triggering a rush to the courthouse where one gay couple managed to get a license before the ruling was stayed.

The state supreme court affirmed that decision on Friday, declaring unconstitutional the 1998 Iowa Defense of Marriage Act that restricted marriage to one man and one woman.

The key principle at the heart of the case was the doctrine of equal protection under the law, which the court said “is essentially a direction that all persons similarly situated should be treated alike.”

HISTORICAL PRECEDENTS

The court compared the right of same-sex couples to marry with historical precedents that struck down slavery and segregation and recognized women’s rights.

“I think it’s significant nationally because you can’t say any more that this is something coming out of a coastal state with an overly liberal bias,” Drake University law professor Mark Kende said.

“People internationally will be struck by the fact that here is a heartland Midwestern state ruling in favor of gay marriage,” he said.

Susan Sommer, senior counsel with Lambda Legal in New York, which provided legal help for the lawsuit, said a number of states, including New York, Vermont and New Hampshire, have “very active efforts” under way to pass gay marriage provisions. Kende said Minnesota, Wisconsin and other heartland states with liberal traditions could follow.

California’s supreme court is hearing arguments about whether to re-legalize same-sex marriage after voters approved a ban in November, which set off national protests.

Iowa opponents of gay marriage were adamant they would fight on, and said they would pursue a constitutional amendment in the state legislature. The soonest such an amendment could be put before voters is 2012.

“This is just one step of many,” Baptist minister Keith Ratliff of Des Moines said. “It’s very important to all of us who are like-minded on this position that the things that have happened today do not stop us from believing what God has already ordained in dealing with marriage … so we just move forward.”

The court’s ruling said gay marriages in the state could take place beginning in three weeks.

Platypus venom may help scientists design new pain killers in future

Sydney, March 27 (ANI): Analyzing the venom of a platypus may help scientists design new pain killers in the future.

According to a report by ABC News, molecular biologist Camilla Whittington has been granted a Fulbright Scholarship to analyse the components of the venom, which can cause severe pain.

“Once we know which one causes pain, then people can start to work to understand how it does that and then develop novel pain killers,” said Whittington, a PhD student at the University of Sydney.

Venom from snakes have already yielded treatments for heart and blood problems, but very little is known about venom from mammals.

The platypus is one of only five mammals that produce venom.

Whittington said that the venom is injected by the male platypus, which has sharp spurs on each hind leg that can spring into action when the animal is attacked.

She said that the venom causes extreme long-lasting pain and swelling that can be tricky to treat.

“We know morphine doesn’t relieve the pain of envenomation; so we’re thinking there may be new pain pathways that are involved in causing the pain – ones that we haven’t discovered yet,” she said.

“If we can work out what causes the pain, we can start to understand how it does that and then maybe work out how to block it,” she added.

But, before that can happen a lot of basic research needs to be done.

According to Whittington, so far only three components of platypus venom have been identified, including peptides related to antimicrobial peptides and nerve growth factors.

Interestingly, available evidence suggests similar proteins have evolved twice, being found in both reptiles and platypus.

“We think it’s an example of convergent evolution,” said Whittington.

She said that studies suggest there may be 50 compounds in platypus venom and her job is now to identify them all so they can then be tested further. (ANI)

Prince Charles’ official gifts range from jewellery to sand

London, January 15 (ANI): Prince Charles and wife Camilla have compiled a list of more than 250 gifts, ranging from jewellery to sand, presented to them during their official overseas trips last year.

While travelling St Lucia and Montserrat, the pair accepted a framed painting, a bottle of rum, a box of Montserrat volcanic ash, and black sand, along with bookmarks, five books and a cocoa stick, reports the Sun.
The Sultan, in Brunei, marked friend Charles’ 60th birthday with a remarkable gold watch while Camilla added a necklace and earrings to her list.
