Brit Muslim boxer involved in brawl ahead of title fight

London, May 15 (ANI): WBA light-welterweight champion Amir Khan was dragged away by his throat in a shocking mass brawl at the weigh-in for tonight’s title fight with Paulie Malignaggi.

Kahn was caught in a huge bust-up at the 1,000 pounds-a-night at Essex House Hotel in New York, The Sun reports.

Malignaggi’s promoter Lou DiBella raged: “Did you see this s**t, my guy got roughed up. If there’s one more incident of this kind, he won’t be fighting on Saturday. That’s a promise. The weigh-in was closed to the public yet Khan had so many people there shouting and screaming.”

Around 50 noisy Khan fans packed into the Petit Salon at the Essex House Hotel and pumped up the volume as Khan and Malignaggi deliberately touched foreheads and aimed verbal abuse at each other, The Sun reports.

Suddenly the violence exploded and it descended into a mass brawl with Khan fans trying to wade in.

Malignaggi tumbled into the hoardings and Khan was surrounded by people from his promoters, Golden Boy, and then led him away, The Sun reports.

Anthony Cantanzaro, Malignaggi’s manager, shouted: “Khan’s people came in and started fighting on the stage.”

Malignaggi said: “If Golden Boy had done this like they were supposed to do, there would have been none of this. There was shoving and then suddenly all hell broke loose.” (ANI)

Dutch authorities bust sex trafficking gang

Dutch authorities said on Saturday they had busted an international gang which lured women mainly from Hungary to Amsterdam and forced them to work as prostitutes in the city’s infamous red light district.

Nine people have been arrested, including three female Hungarian pimps and Dutch brothel owners, a spokesman for Amsterdam’s prosecution service said on Saturday.

Gang members enticed victims to Amsterdam with promises of a better future, where they used violence and rape to intimidate while forcing the women to work as prostitutes in the red-lit windows that attract many tourists to the city each year.

“They came to a city where they knew nobody and then the violence started,” said the spokesman.

So far 13 victims have been identified, including Hungarian and Dutch women, but the spokesman said there were probably several more, though fear and psychological dependence on their pimps often prevents women coming forward.

Investigations leading up to the arrests were part of efforts to crack down on illegal activities in Amsterdam’s 800-year-old red light district, the spokesman said, which have also included closing down brothels in the city centre.

Voluntary prostitution was legalised in the Netherlands in 2000, but authorities have toughened their stance on the business in recent years to fight the influence of organised crime and clean up inner city areas.

Man in ‘small penis in scanner’ jibe arrested after bust-up with colleague

New York, May 7 (ANI): A Transportation Security Administration (TSA) worker in Miami was arrested for battery after he attacked a colleague who made fun of his small genitalia revealed by new high-tech security scanners during a recent training session.

Rolando Negrin, 44, was arrested for assault after things took an ugly turn at Miami International Airport when Negrin confronted one of his co-workers in an employee parking lot and hit him with a police baton on the arm and back, as per police reports.

“[Negrin] then told victim to kneel down and say ”your sorry,”” NBC Miami quotes the report. “Victim stated he was in fear and complied with [Negrin].”

“[Negron] stated he could not take the jokes anymore and lost his mind,” the report reads.

Negrin was arrested and booked into Miami-Dade County Jail.

The 170,000-dollar machines, which were introduced last year, took some heat from fliers who were offended by the revealing details of the scanners. (ANI)

Picasso””s ‘Nude, Green Leaves and Bust’ fetches record $106m at Christie””s

London, May 5(ANI): Spanish artist Pablo Picasso’s painting ‘Nude, Green Leaves and Bust’ has been auctioned off at a record 106 million dollars.

The artist””s 1932 picture, which belonged to the late Los Angeles collectors Frances and Sidney Brody since the 1950s, was sold at Christie””s auction house in New York.

The winning bid, made by an anonymous telephone bidder, breaks the record held by Giacometti””s Walking Man I, which was sold for 104.3million dollars.

Another work by Picasso, Garcon a la Pipe, had previously held the record when it sold for 104.1 million dollars in 2004.

The record-breaking sale, which includes Christie””s commission, indicates the recovery of the art market from the global financial crisis.

“The Brodys bought it in the 50s. It was only exhibited once in 1961,” The BBC quoted Conor Jordan, the head of Christie””s impressionist department as saying. (ANI)

How the net has made William Shatner richer by $600M

New York, May 04 (ANI): ‘Star Trek’ star William Shatner, who asked for stocks instead of cash when he became pitchman for the Internet travel company Priceline.com in 1997, has made a startling 600 million dollars – thanks to his early decision.

According to The Toronto Sun, Priceline’s shares are currently trading close to 300-dollar apiece. And although the company won’t disclose how many shares Shatner receives, it’s reported to be plenty.

A decade ago during the dot.com bust, the stock was selling for less than 2-dollar a share, reports The New York Post.

It was around the same time Shatner got into the commercials. (ANI)

Courtney Love speaks about her bust-up with daughter

London, Mar 16 (ANI): Rock musician Courtney Love has revealed that the split between her and her daughter came about because of the teenager punching, biting and scratching her.

Love, 45, said her daughter, Frances Bean, from late Nirvana frontman Kurt Cobain, was placed under the temporary guardianship of her paternal grandmother and an aunt in December last year after the fall out.

The singer was later issued a banning order by a judge, which prevented her from contacting Frances until a further hearing in April this year.

She is adamant to get her daughter back, but she also wants to clarify about the argument that sparked their split.

“I was talking on the phone. Frances came out of my room. She was hysterical. First she was crying at my legs, saying, ‘Why was I born?’ Then she bites and scratches and pulls on my hair,” the Daily Star quoted her as saying.

“She punched me. I grabbed her with both arms. That left a bruise and she took a picture of her bruise,” she added. (ANI)

Why Ronnie Wood and girlfriend called it quits

London, Sep 18 (ANI): Ronnie Wood and his girlfriend Ekaterina Ivanova relationship ended because of a furious bust-up after she was knocked back from modelling his clothing range.

The fight was so bad that police had to be called to resolve the issue.

According to reports, Ivanova, 20, was hoping to model his clothing range, but she got angry after getting knocked back.

The model was left fuming when the Rolling Stones star, 62, presented his sketches to the brand, which is producing his clothes.

“They loved his creations, but when he pulled out a nude photo of his girlfriend, a few eyebrows shot up,” the Mirror quoted a source as saying.

“A lot of people see Kat as fame-hungry – there is no way they’d approve her image on the clothes,” added the insider.

Then, Kat had set her sight on modelling the gear at Paris Fashion Week.

But Ronnie’s pitching did no good for her, and she allegedly threatened to end it all.

“Kat saw Ronnie’s clothing as a springboard to getting out there,” said the source. (ANI)

Archaeologists discover gemstone carrying portrait of Alexander the Great

Washington, September 16 (ANI): An archaeological team, during excavations in Israel, has discovered a gemstone that has a portrait of Alexander the Great engraved on it.

The excavations at Tel Dor were carried out by an archaeological team, which was directed by Dr. Ayelet Gilboa of the University of Haifa and Dr. Ilan Sharon of the Hebrew University of Jerusalem.

“Despite its miniature dimensions – the stone is less than a centimeter high and its width is less than half a centimeter – the engraver was able to depict the bust of Alexander on the gem without omitting any of the ruler’s characteristics,” said Dr. Gilboa, Chair of the Department of Archaeology at the University of Haifa.

“The emperor is portrayed as young and forceful, with a strong chin, straight nose and long curly hair held in place by a diadem,” he added.

The Tel Dor researchers have noted that it is surprising that a work of art such as this would be found in Israel, on the periphery of the Hellenistic world.

“It is generally assumed that the master artists – such as the one who engraved the image of Alexander on this particular gemstone – were mainly employed by the leading Hellenistic courts in the capital cities, such as those in Alexandria in Egypt and Seleucia in Syria,” according to the researchers.

“This new discovery is evidence that local elites in secondary centers, such as Tel Dor, appreciated superior objects of art and could afford ownership of such items,” they added.

The significance of the discovery at Dor is in the gemstone being uncovered in an orderly excavation, in a proper context of the Hellenistic period.

This tiny gem was unearthed by a volunteer during excavation of a public structure from the Hellenistic period in the south of Tel Dor, excavated by a team from the University of Washington at Seattle headed by Prof. Sarah Stroup.

Dr. Jessica Nitschke, professor of classical archaeology at Georgetown University in Washington DC, identified the engraved motif as a bust of Alexander the Great.

This has been confirmed by Prof. Andrew Stewart of the University of California at Berkeley, an expert on images of Alexander and author of a book on this topic.

Alexander was probably the first Greek to commission artists to depict his image – as part of a personality cult that was transformed into a propaganda tool. (ANI)

‘Two for one’ breast boosting technique not as viable as it seems

London, Sep 16 (ANI): A technology that was claimed as the ultimate solution to give a boost to women’s breasts by using fat removed from thighs is not viable as it seems, say experts.

Mel Graham, chairman of the Harley Medical Group, recently claimed that the “two for one” procedure could extract excess fat from where it was not wanted – the belly, hips or thighs – and relocate it to the bust.

However, rival cosmetic surgeons criticised the “hype” surrounding the new operation, insisting that it was “premature”.

“(This) is setting consumers up for disappointment and there are many reasons for vigilance,” the Independent quoted Dai Davies, of Plastic Surgery Partners in Harley Street, as saying.

He said that doctors have long been experimenting with innumerable aids to give women larger busts, including using body fat as a procedure.

The technique of removing fat by liposuction, and then injecting it into the chest has been tried for almost 20 years but with limited success, said Davies.

“Where you are injecting small amounts of fat into the face, which has a good blood supply, there is good evidence that it works. Most plastic surgeons would agree there is a place for it. But this involves injecting a large blob of fat into the breast area. Fat consists of living cells and living cells must have a blood supply, otherwise they die,” he explained.

In a Japanese study last year, 230 women underwent fat transfer, and it was found that, on average, half the fat injected was lost and all the women needed a second procedure after a year.

There are also fears that dying fat cells could cause micro-calcification in the breast leading to difficulties in breast screening and an increase in biopsies – an invasive procedure to remove tissue to check for cancer.

“I don’t think we should be a testing ground for all these techniques. You are feeding on a susceptible group of people. There should be controls but, sadly, the Government has decided it won’t implement regulation,” said Davies.

Professor David Sharpe, a plastic surgeon in Yorkshire and the founding chairman of the breast special interest group of BAAPS, said: “This sounds like another example of creative marketing. Breast implants are a well-tried and tested method. At the moment, I would stick with that.”

Mel Braham, chairman of the Harley Medical Group, said results of a US trial to be presented next month would demonstrate the success of the operation.

“The results will be assessed by our medical board and, if approved, the operation will be introduced next year. I don’t take risks with patients. I am confident this is a safe procedure,” he said. (ANI)

Colin Farrell’s bust-up with photog over sis

London, Sep 14 (ANI): Irish actor Colin Farrell reportedly became very furious with a photographer at the premiere of his new movie ‘Triage’ after the latter shooed his sister off the red carpet.

Farrell, 33, was at the Toronto International Film Festival in Canada on September 12 with his sister and personal assistant Claudine when the incident took place.

The snapper had asked Farrell’s sister to step away from his side so that he can get a clear shot, but the actor became infuriated with the suggestion and confronted the photographer.

“I was just saying, ‘Please can everyone clear the carpet, move on’. He took it personal. He said, ‘Do not shout at my sister like that, do not ever speak to my sister like that ever’,” the Daily Express quoted Joe Alvarez as saying. (ANI)

Beckham, Donovan to face a disciplinary probe

Los Angeles, Sep 14(ANI): Los Angeles Galaxy footballers David Beckham and Landon Donovan will face a disciplinary probe following a bust-up with FC Dallas players after their 6-3 defeat at Home Depot Center in California.

The incident took place after when Donovan and Beckham were involved in a brawl with Dallas midfielder David Ferreira and defender Daniel Hernandez.

According to reports, Donovan had kicked out at Ferreira and received a shove from Hernandez, following which Beckham joined them as he raced over to grab Hernandez by the neck.

All the players had to be separated by their coaches.

“It would have been better if we had shown that fire in the game,” The Sun quoted Bruce Arena, LA Galaxy head coach, as saying.

Beckham could face a harsh punishment in the disciplinary probe, as he has already been sent off once this season. (ANI)

‘Two-in-one’ boob job uses unwanted body fat

London, Sep 14 (ANI): Here’s some news that will bring double joy to women: a “two in one” boob job technique that uses unwanted fat from other parts of the body has been developed.

The breast enlargement operation takes excess fat from the thighs and stomach and moves it to the bust.

The pioneering technique has been tested in Britain and the U.S. and is expected to be offered to British women by early next year.

And it is believed that the effects are “astounding”, resulting in larger breasts that look and feel just like normal as no implant has been introduced into the body.

Experts have predicted that the procedure, which might cost around 8,000 pounds, will eventually overtake implants to dominate the cosmetic surgery market.

According to the Harley Medical Group, the technique has originated from reconstructive surgery and was tested in Britain after a 10-year study on global developments in fat grafting.

They said that the results experienced by patients in the US and UK, who had the procedure four or five years ago, have shown that the effects are lasting.

Two of the Harley Medical Group’s surgeons have now been trained in the procedure in the US, while eight more surgeons are set to join them before the end of this year.

“This is the most exciting breakthrough in cosmetic and reconstructive surgery that I have seen over the last two decades,” The Daily Express quoted chairman Mel Braham as saying.

“Following some final reviews by our medical board, we should be in a position to launch this procedure in the UK early next year,” Braham added.

Dr Zdenek Pros, a consultant surgeon trained in the procedure, said: “This type of augmentation technique is very effective in enabling surgeons to shape the breast and achieve smooth, natural-looking contours.” (ANI)

Winfrey comes out in defense of her decision to not support Brown

Washington, Sept 10 (ANI): Talk show queen Oprah Winfrey has come out in defense of her decision to not to support Chris Brown, after the star slammed the TV titan for siding with ex-girlfriend Rihanna following the bust-up.

After Brown’s beating of Rihanna in February (09), Winfrey dedicated an episode of her hit daytime talkshow to the topic of domestic abuse and also advised the ‘Umbrella’ singer against the Brown.

However, Brown hit out at Winfrey insisting he had helped the media mogul out in the past.

He said, “I commend Oprah on being like, ‘This (abuse) is a problem’, but it was a slap in my face. I did a lot of stuff for her, like going to Africa and performing for her school. She could have been more helpful, like, ‘OK, I’m going to help both of these people out.’”

In an interview to Access Hollywood, Winfrey backed up her decision not to defend Brown, insisting that although she was grateful for his help during the opening of her African girls school, she does not condone domestic violence in any way.

“So this is what happened; Chris Brown did my show several years ago, I think it was 2007. Fun, fun time and afterward he said, ‘If there’s anything ever I can do for you then let me know.’ I almost never take anybody up on that… But my girls at the Academy in Africa love Chris Brown, love, love, love, love, love Chris Brown,” Contactmusic quoted her as saying.
