Kate Moss robbed of £80K Banksy portrait

London, May 21 (ANI): Super model Kate Moss has been robbed of a Banksy portrait worth 80,000 pounds along with other valuable artworks.

Moss, her partner Jamie Hince and mother Linda, were asleep when the burglars broke into the house.

It is believed that the robbery occurred around 4am on Thursday and the robbers may have escaped following disturbances when Moss or Hince woke up.

The police have arrested a 24-year-old man and are questioning him.

“Camden Police are investigating a burglary at Greville Road, NW6, from approximately 4.20am on Thursday, May 20,” The Telegraph quoted a police spokesman as saying.

“A 24-year-old man was arrested in connection with it and inquiries are ongoing,” he added.

Moss recently spent hundreds of thousands of pounds on works by Banksy, the guerrilla artist, including a 12ft by 18ft mural of herself and several celebrity friends which she reportedly commissioned at a cost of 150,000 pounds. (ANI)

UK taxpayers’ fury over ex-cons free gym membership under crime reduction scheme

London, May 21(ANI): Former convicted criminals in the UK are being rewarded with free gym memberships to encourage them to turn their backs on a life of crime.

Thirty criminals in Wokingham, whose crimes include burglary and anti-social behaviour, have got passes worth around 60 pounds a month as long as they stick to the conditions of their rehabilitation.

Talking about the scheme, Detective Inspector Rodger Cartwright, of Wokingham CID, admitted that it “might not be popular” with the public, but insisted that it “taught discipline” to offenders.

“They have to work really hard to get it and I have an intelligence network so I know what a lot of local villains are up to. We put them away if they try and offend again,” The Daily Star quoted Cartwright, as saying.

However, Policy Analyst at the Taxpayers’ Alliance, John O’Connell, claims that the scheme is a complete waste of money.

“We often hear that we need to protect frontline services, but these hare-brained schemes make that all the harder,” O’Connell said.

“It also shows a complete distortion of priorities. Law-abiding people work hard so they can pay to use their local gym. They might wonder why they bother if convicted criminals get theirs for free,” he added. (ANI)

Burglars threatened to take Gerrard’s kids away

London, May 15 (ANI): Burglars warned the wife of England footballer Steven Gerrard that they would take her kids in a terrifying raid on their home.

The Liverpool Crown Court was told that Alex Curran confronted the masked gang, who demanded she hand over jewellery and the contents of a safe.

Details of the ordeal emerged after Martin Wilson, 22, changed his plea and admitted the burglary following legal arguments, The Telegraph reports.

Graham Pickavance, for the prosecution, told the court the robbery took place in December 2007 as the Reds captain led his team to victory in a Champions League game against Marseille.

Curran, 27, had remained at the home in Formby, Merseyside, with their two children, Lilly-Ella and Lexie, now aged six and four, and their nanny Lyndsey Johnston.

Pickavance described the mansion as secured by high walls, a fence and electronically controlled gates, The Telegraph reports.

Police caught up with Wilson by analysing the use of his mobile phone, the court heard.

The defendant is serving six years and eight months in jail after admitting conspiracy to burgle at Liverpool Crown Court last June, The Telegraph reports. (ANI)

Amelie says the man ran off when she started to scream.

“I truly started screaming and I started really getting really nervous because I’ve never seen a robber before,” she said.

The child was treated for shock.

It was not until her father came downstairs, that the intruder fled through the back door.

The thief made off with a number of items from the family car, but did not take anything of value from the house.

Police believe the incident may be linked to a series of residential burglaries in the area.

Loxton High School students are disappointed they will not be able to enter this weekend’s Murray River Giant Pumpkin competition at Cadell, after thieves made off with their entry.

Agricultural studies teacher Sandy Loffler says it is the first time the students had attempted to grow a giant pumpkin and they thought they were in with a strong chance of winning the competition.

She says the pumpkin was taken overnight on Friday, March 19 and is calling for its return.

“I think it was just about a metre long and probably 80cm high and perhaps 90cm wide and it was bright orange and I’ve looked around at other giant pumpkins grown by other people and we’re pretty sure we could recognise it,” she said.

“It had an identifying mark on it … I don’t know much it would have weighed but it was a whopper.”

Another giant pumpkin was stolen from a grower at Monash on the same night.

The city has had 25 break, enter and steal incidents so far this month. However, the figures are reasonably on par with those for January and February.

The accused are now due to face court.

Police say the arrests of the four people and a 13-year-old boy on Wednesday morning is a very good result and they are confident the increasing trend of break-ins will stop.

Thieves target cyclone clean-up tools

Police are appealing for public help after the theft of generators and power tools being used as part of the Cyclone Ului recovery effort in north Queensland.

Two generators, as well as chainsaws and circular saws, have been stolen from properties in Cannonvale, East Makay and Glenella.

Senior Constable Angela Warlcon says residents should take steps to protect their equipment.

“Make note of the serial numbers of those items and when they’ve finished with them ensure that they store them safely,” she said.

“Even if it includes taking them inside and placing them in the laundry, somewhere you wouldn’t usually store those items, but at this time for security, lock them away.”

Constable Warlcon says the thefts appear to be the work of opportunitists.

“It is extremely disappointing because there’s a lot of good work going on out in the community … people are really banding together, neighbours are sticking together and assisting each other and even strangers are offering assistance,” she said.

“This is disappointing when opportunistic crime like this occurs.”

Meanwhile, 50 electricity generators have been flown into Mackay from Brisbane to help restore power to rural communities affected by the cyclone.

The Mackay district disaster coordinator says the generators will be deployed to Midge Point, north of Mackay, and inland to Eungella.

Superintendent Rowan Bond says the generators will be used to power individual homes.

“A request was made from Mackay Disaster Coordination Centre for generators to go to those areas where the electrical infrastructure is damaged to the extent that they need small generators to power individual houses,” Superintendent Bond said.

“Those are being deployed to specific areas and they’ve already been allocated.”

Ergon Energy says there are still 5,500 homes without power across the region.

A spokesman says it is focusing on reconnecting rural areas north of Mackay, communities in the Pioneer Valley and areas around Proserpine and Shute Harbour.

Ergon has brought in a helicopter to re-string high voltage powerlines in Shute Harbour today.
