PETA pays octomom Nadya Suleman $5K to promote pet family planning

London, May 20 (ANI): PETA is paying octomom Nadya Suleman 5,000 dollars to put a 3-foot-by-4-foot plastic sign on her front door that reads— “Don”t Let Your Dog or Cat Become an Octomom. Always Spay or Neuter.”

The sign will adorn Suleman’s door until June 9, the deadline when city officials say it must be removed.

The organisation is also throwing in a month”s supply of veggie hot dogs and burgers for her and her 14 children.

Suleman, 34, acknowledged she put the sign on her door partly for the money but added that her support of PETA is genuine.

“I love animals and I do believe they should be spayed or neutered. Humans of course are much different,” the Telegraph quoted her as saying.

Suleman said that her children, the oldest of whom is nine, want a dog and she has told they can have one when they are old enough to care for it.

Suleman already had six children when she gave birth 16 months ago to octuplets conceived by in vitro fertilization.

And since then she has been trying hard to pay her bills and was in danger of losing her home earlier this year.

Her lawyer has since negotiated an extension on a 450,000 dollars mortgage payment that had been due in March.

“It”s really a win-win situation for everyone,” PETA campaign coordinator Amanda Fortino said of the sign.

Fortino said the agreement allowed PETA to do its part to help Suleman financially and at the same time they could spread the word that more than 7 million cats and dogs enter shelters every year, where more than half are put to death. (ANI)

Pub meal ‘has more fat than 12 McDonald’s hamburgers’

London, May 13 (ANI): Pub grub burger meals have more fat than twelve McDonald”s hamburgers.

And, according to a Sun investigation, the worst offenders provide nearly all of an adult”s recommended daily calorie intake.

The O”Neill”s Double Burger Meal – which includes chips – contains 100g of fat.

That equals to half a tub of margarine and more than 12 McDonald”s burgers.

Dietician Cath Collins from St George”s Hospital, London, said: “These meals may be value for money but they”re not value for health.

“With a pint, it is almost all the calories an average man would need in 24 hours.

“And this meal contains a phenomenal amount of fat – around the same as half a tub of margarine.

“If you have this high-fat, high-calorie meal twice a week, it would contribute to weight gain.” (ANI)

`Messy’ Messi says his home looks like a pigsty

London, May 6 (ANI): Argentine football star Lionel Messi lives on takeaways and never cleans up.

Messi, 22, who earns more than 500,000 pounds a week, says he does not like to “flash” and drives an Audi given to him by the Spanish club rather than splash out on a super car.

According to The Sun, Messi told Football Punk magazine he was also messy in the kitchen and could only rustle up sausages or burgers.

“He”s an amazing footballer, but when it comes to his car and domestic chores, he”s a nightmare. He leaves stuff lying around everywhere and never really thinks to clear it up. I guess he is thinking about football all the time, ” a pal said. (ANI)

UNICEF cautions India over river pollution

New Delhi, March 22 (ANI): River pollution would remain a burden for the rural people of India for quite sometime, as the pollution is manmade, said Chief of Water and Environmental Sanitation of UNICEF, Lizette Burgers, here on Monday.

Speaking during a workshop on adaptive strategies for Water Conservation and Water Quality challenges as part of the celebrations to mark the World Water Day, Burgers said: “It will continue to be a burden to the rural people for quite sometime to come. Sources; previously considered to be not contaminated are being identified as contaminated by the time and new contaminants are also coming to light like heavy metals and radioactive elements. Many of these, if not ….most are most likely to be a result of manmade pollution.”

Ms. Burgers also said that India has a lot to be proud of as it has achieved a lot in the last couple of years. There have been positive developments in the area of water supply. India has already achieved its MDG target of 86% of access to improved sources of drinking water. However, there are many challenges in front of us. “We see that out of 150 million, 134 million living in rural India have no access to water. It is also critical to look at safety of water as it is directly linked to health and social stability.” (ANI)

Prince Harry, Natalie Imbruglia ‘strike up close friendship’

London, June 29 (ANI): Prince Harry appears to have struck up a close friendship with Australian pop star Natalie Imbruglia since he parted ways with Chelsy Davy.

They dined on burgers in the VIP area of the Hard Rock Calling event held in London’s Hyde Park. ccording to a witness, the pair exchanged warm hugs and a kiss when they met earlier in the evening during a performance by The Killers.

They watched the rockers’ set together from the side of the stage.

Following the show, they retreated to the plush backstage area for a meal, joined on their secluded table by singer Tom Jones and four others.

After polishing off their food, the group ordered a round of alcoholic lemon drop shots.

Too much fast food makes kids ‘stupid’

London, May 23 (ANI): Eating too much fast food can ruin your kid’s performance at school, concludes a new study.

The study, which involved 5,500 primary school children, found that pupils achieved lower scores in tests after eating takeaway meals such as burgers and chips more than three times a week, reports The Telegraph.

Some children’s scores in literacy and numeracy dropped by up to 16 per cent compared to the average, the study claimed.

In the research, researchers from Vanderbilt University in Tennessee tracked the eating habits of children aged 10 and 11 – then compared it to performance in reading and maths tests.

They found just over half of pupils had eaten at fast food restaurants such as McDonald’s up to three times in the last week.
n total, children scored between 58 and 181 points in the reading tests, gaining an average score of 141.5. But after taking other factors into account, pupils who ate fast food between four and six times a week scored almost seven points below average.

Children snacking once a day fell 16 points, while pupils indulging three times a day dropped by 19 points.

Similar trends were noted in maths.

Dr Kerri Tobin, who carried out the study, said it found “statistically significant relationships between higher than average consumption of fast food and lowered test scores”.

“It is possible that the types of food served at fast food restaurants cause cognitive difficulties that result in lower test scores,” she said. (ANI)

Eminem warned against disastrous crash diet

London, May 17 (ANI): Eminem has been cautioned against serious harm if he continues to crash diet during his taxing 70-date European tour.

The nine-time Grammy-winning rapper, who had bloated after feasting on fried chicken, fries and burgers, was said to have dropped more than three stones in a desperate bid to get back to his Slim Shady form.

Btu doctors fear the 36-year-old Academy Award winner may be going too far and not only risks becoming anaemic but could also land his life in danger.

“This would be bad enough if he wasn’t living the non-stop life of a music superstar,” the Daily Star quoted Los Angeles GP Morris Missler as saying.

“Crash diets are extremely dangerous for your heart, liver, kidneys and brain because you lose tissue around them.

“If you don’t eat enough, your body will actually burn the muscle tissue of the organs themselves to provide you with sufficient energy to function.

“Even without a wildly energetic and adrenalin-charged job, crash dieters risk heart attacks and strokes, liver and kidney failure and most certainly death in extreme cases,” Missler added. (ANI)

Michelle Obama’s burgers and shakes ‘best ladies lunch ever’

Washington, May 9 (ANI): Michelle Obama shared the dining table full of burgers and shakes with a group of 20 staff members and friends at a posh restaurant.

The US First Lady dug into a variety of burgers, french fries and signature hand-spun toasted marshmallow shakes prepared by Top Chef alumni Spike Mendelsohn at Good Stuff Eatery in Washington, D.C.

“She was smiling and making jokes the entire time,” Us magazine quoted a source as saying.

“It looked like the best ladies lunch ever. Everyone was sharing fries and trying each other’s burgers and shakes,” the source added.

The group also had some “Obama Burgers,” a fresh, farmhouse burger topped with bacon, blue cheese, Mendelsohn’s homemade onion marmalade and a horseradish mayo.

Mendelsohn, who recently won best burger in the country at the South Beach Food and Wine Festival’s Burger Bash, said: “This was the best honor of my life.

“I absolutely love Michelle Obama and love the family. Now we just need the president. Hopefully he’ll follow her lead and come visit Good Stuff. Women know best, Mr. President!” (ANI)

Obama, Biden waited in line to lunch on burgers

Arlington (Virginia), May 6 (ANI): US President Barack Obama and his deputy Joe Biden in order to show that they’re still in touch with the people waited in line for a big juicy burger.

They went in their motorcade across the Potomac River into Virginia, and pulled up outside 1713 Wilson Blvd. The popular joint in a plain Arlington strip mall has no sign, but neighbours know it houses Ray’s Hell Burger, and the eatery is famous for its premium aged 10-ounce hamburgers as for its bare-bones decor.

Obama purchased burgers not only for himself and Biden, but also for several members of the press pool that tailed him to lunch across the Potomac. Cheeseburgers at Ray’s retail at 7.95 dollars, and Obama deposited a five dollars bill in the tip jar.

With lunch in their hand, Obama and Biden sat atop stools, like most of the other customers.

A few of those customers remained in the small, burgers-only joint to savour the moment and finish their meal after Obama left.

“I had lunch with the president,” exclaimed Robert Gooch to nobody in particular.

Another customer proudly showed off the cell phone camera shot he took of the jacket-less Obama and Biden chowing down together.

Michael Landrum, the burger joint’s owner, was ecstatic after the visit, calling it “one of the greatest days of my life. I guess he was missing some good food from Chicago.”

Landrum went back behind the counter to keep pushing out burgers, but took the time to greet another storeowner in the small Rosslyn strip. (ANI)

Doughnuts, burgers, crisps labelled ‘healthy’ under European guidelines!

London, Apr 25 (ANI): Doughnuts, burgers and crisps would now be advertised as “healthy food” under new European guidelines.

The sugary treats like doughnuts favoured by Homer Simpson has passed the European Commission’s new test for being nutritious.

The other snacks, which can now be advertised as healthy, include sausage rolls, custard tarts and even Burger King Whoppers.

Despite the UK’s Food Standards Agency (FSA) a strict limit on the amount of sugars, fats and salt, EC’s Health Claims Regulation has set the threshold much higher.

According to a report by Oxford University, a Tesco jam doughnut contains 200mg of sodium, 18g of sugar and 5.7g of saturated fat per 100g.

It would easily meet the EC’s health threshold for bakery food of 500mg sodium, 25g sugar and 8g saturated fat.

“Labelling must help people make healthier choices and we would oppose any moves that might encourage consumers to eat more fatty, sugary and salty foods,” the Daily Star quoted a spokesman for the FSA as saying.

Colin Walker, of consumer watchdog Which?, said: “Jam doughnuts and crisps being allowed to make nutrition claims would be laughable if it wasn’t so serious.” (ANI)

Junk food makes kids fatter, but happier

Washington, Apr 15 (ANI): Burgers, pizzas, chips and soft drinks might be making children fatter but they also make them happy, concludes a new study.

According to Professor Hung-Hao Chang from National Taiwan University and Professor Rodolfo Nayga from the University of Arkansas in the US, programs aimed at tackling childhood obesity, by reducing children’s consumption of unhealthy food and drink, are likely to be more effective if they also actively seek to keep children happy in other ways.

The study has been published in Springer’s Journal of Happiness Studies.

To reach the conclusion, Chang and Nayga looked at the relationship between unhealthy dietary habits and children’s psychological health. In particular, they studied the effects of fast food and soft drink consumption on children’s body weight and unhappiness.

Using data from the National Health Interview Survey in Taiwan – a nationwide survey carried out in 2001 – the authors looked at the fast food and soft drink consumption, body weight and level of happiness of 2,366 children aged between 2 and 12 years old. Fast food included French fries, pizza and hamburgers; soft drinks included soda and other sugar-sweetened beverages.

A quarter of the children in the survey sample were overweight or obese and approximately 19 percent sometimes or often felt unhappy, sad or depressed. The study’s key finding was that children who ate fast food and drank soft drinks were more likely to be overweight, but they were also less likely to be unhappy.

The authors’ analysis also highlighted a number of factors influencing children’s body weight, eating patterns and happiness. For example, mothers’ consumption of fast food and soft drinks predicted her child’s eating habits. Those children who ate fast food were more likely to also consume soft drinks.

Children from lower income households were more likely to have unhealthy dietary habits and be overweight or obese, the study found.

The authors conclude: “Our findings suggest that consumption of fast food and soft drinks can result in a trade-off between children’s objective (i.e. obesity) and subjective (i.e. unhappiness) well-being. Policies and programs that aim to improve children’s overall health should take these effects on children’s objective and subjective well-being into account to facilitate the reduction in childhood obesity without sacrificing children’s degree of happiness.” (ANI)

The 11-foot Mona Lisa created out of grease from 14 burgers!

London, April 1 (ANI): An artist has put up his version of Mona Lisa using burger grease for an American fast food company, looking to warn consumers against the amount of fat used in their competitor’s product.

Phil Hansen used grease from 14 burgers to paint an 11-foot canvas made from butcher paper.

The minute-long Internet advertisement shows the 29-year-old squeezing the fat out of every bite, which is then fed to an eager dog.

A close up further shows Hansen’s grease soaked hands in the endorsement made for American restaurant chain Arby’s.

Hansen said that the revelation had left many disgusted.

“People said it was a nice recreation and there were lots of comments on the nastiness of how it was made,” the Sun quoted him as saying.

“Many of the people who saw it had just eaten a hamburger that day – they were a bit grossed out by the idea,” he added. (ANI)

Kebab seller rows with Oxford University college over food smell

London, Feb.3 (ANI): A kebab seller and Oxford University’s Christchurch College are embroiled in a row over smells emanating from his van that distract students.
Saeid Keshmiri’s business has been moved away from the entrance of Christ Church, where he had based himself for the last 15 years.

Between the hours of 7 p.m. and 3 a.m. every day, the 62-year-old served kebabs, chips and burgers from “Sid’s Kitchen” to those returning home late.

The college argued that the smell of the food was off-putting to students trying to sleep nearby and also encouraged drunken revellers.

It applied to Oxford City Council’s licensing committee to revoke his licence but his van has instead been moved 200 yards further down the road in a compromise agreement, reports The Telegraph.
Christ Church steward John Harris told a hearing at Oxford Town Hall: “It is inappropriate and unsuitable to have traders with noise, food smells, as well as crime and disorder in plain view of windows of people who want a good night’s sleep.”

Keshmiri, however, insists that he has been providing a useful service.
“For 15 years we have been serving people, including the students. They come down and get a baked potato when studying at night. They are quite happy we are here. It’s a nice place to work – the only problem is drunk people but they are not using my van, they are using the bus stops,” the paper quoted him, as saying.
The council turned down the application, but urged Keshmiri to look for an alternative site in the city to avoid further controversy.

Despite the university’s concern, students were supportive of Keshmiri. (ANI)

PETA pro-veggie commercial dumped for too much sexuality

New York, Jan 28 (ANI): A PETA pro-veggie commercial has been taken off by NBC because it exceeded their sexuality standards.

The ad had been planned for the Super Bowl, but was pulled out because, according to NBC Universal’s advertising standards executive Victoria Morgan, it depicted a higher level of sexuality than was allowed.

The ad, which carries the tagline, “Studies Show Vegetarians Have Better Sex,” showed lingerie-clad models getting “intimate” with vegetables.

There was even one shot where an actress was showed “rubbing her pelvic region with pumpkin.”

“PETA’s veggie ads are locked out, while ads for fried chicken and burgers are allowed, even though these foods make Americans fat, sick and boring in bed,” the New York Post quoted a PETA rep as saying. (ANI)

No more free Burger King Whoppers for dropping friends on Facebook

London, Jan 18 (ANI): Burger King has pulled a Facebook campaign in which users were offered a free Whopper for dumping 10 friends on the social networking website.

The Burger franchise took the decision after pressure from Facebook bosses, who were reportedly unhappy with the message that was sent to friends who were dumped.

The Whopper Sacrifice Campaign, which could be installed free by Facebook users, sent a message to abandoned friends saying their pal preferred a burger to them.

The fast food chain had to remove the software application as it saw more than 230,000 friends “sacrificed” for burgers.

“While Facebook was a great sport, they did ask for changes that would have resulted in a different approach to our application,” Sky News quoted a Burger King spokesperson as saying.

The spokesperson added: “Ultimately, based on philosophical differences, we decided to conclude the campaign.”

Facebook on the other hand said: “We encourage creativity from developers and companies using Facebook Platform, but we also must ensure that applications meet users’ expectations.

“After constructive conversations with Burger King and the developer of the application, they have decided to conclude their campaign rather than continue with the restrictions we placed on their application.” (ANI)
