Lose the brush, get a gun

Mumbai, June 6 — Last week, tucked away inside Wind Chimes play school on Hill Road, Bandra, models were having make-up blown on to their faces by make-up artists using pen-sized metal guns. Rather than applying foundation with conventional brushes, the artists were blowing foundation on to the models’ faces.

Started by Virginia Holmes and Natasha Nischol, Fat Mu, the same make-up consultants that worked on Slumdog Millionaire, held the workshop to introduce airbrushing to the city. Jillian Lagasse, an American make-up artist based in London, had been brought over by Fat Mu to train the Indian make-up artists in the latest Hollywood trend wherein make-up is sprayed onto the face with an instrument called an airbrush.

“Airbrushing is mandatory in the UK since all the channels have gone to High Definition (HD). HD shows wrinkles and blemishes more clearly,” Lagasse says.

This technique is said to create flawless looks, suited to HD films. Make-up airbrushing evolved from painting cars, furniture and spray-painting, thanks to its pioneer, American Dina Ousley.

“It wasn’t originally meant for make-up and then someone thought it could be used to camouflage pigmentation and it took off from there,” Holmes says. Apart from covering up pigmentation and scars, the foundation can be applied in one-tenth the time needed for conventional application.

It sets on contact, leaving a flawless appearance, suited for online photo albums and weddings. It’s also used for special effects, especially bruises, Holmes says.

“We used it to create Amitabh Bachchan’s look in Paa. And it was used for Star Trek.

But I don’t think A-list Bollywood stars are using it yet, even though it is used in Hollywood and at Cannes,” she adds. It is hygienic as there is no need to touch the face.

And the make-up sits on the skin like a veil and does not seep into the pores. Small bottles of make-up have to be bought to go with the guns, but it is cost-effective as only a few drops are needed for the whole face, Holmes says.

It is recommended mainly for applying foundation, blusher and highlighting the brows, but must not be used for eyeliner. Fat Mu is holding workshops, inviting experts from all over the world to train Indian make-up artistes in the latest beauty techniques.

They recently had an expert who taught artistes how to recreate periodic hairstyles such as Victorian wigs. “We want people to keep up-to-date with the latest trends and what is happening around the world,” explains Holmes.

Why airbrush? The speed of application and flawless finish make it ideal for the film world. In roughly 45 seconds, you can airbrush a full face with foundation, blusher and highlights.

It creates a flawless look and only eight to 10 drops of foundation are needed for a full face of makeup, making it economical. It is water and sweat-resistant and lasts for 12 hours, making it ideal for humid conditions, harsh studio and film lights, and weddings It is hygienic as airbrushing never touches the skin and so is suited to acne-prone skin.

Aurangabad, May 6 (ANI): Farmers are lamenting the damage to their mango crops in various regions of Maharashtra due to hailstones and early rainfall.

Every year Aurangabad district exports around 70 tons of Kesar Mangoes to USA.
But earlier this week, due to hailstorms and unexpected rainfall, the mangoes have been damaged, and developed holes and bruises.

The farmers fear that they will not be able to meet the export targets.

“The quality of the mango crops has now deteriorated for the purpose of export. That is why this year we won”t be able to achieve the export targets. Farmers receive Rs 70,000-75, 000 for every ton of mangoes exported to the US, and make an annual profit of Rs 4.5 million.

Barcelona (Spain), Mar.31 (ANI): Arsenal skipper Cesc abregas has vowed to take the Gunners to the winner’s podium in tonight’s Champion League clash against Barcelona, despite fears over his injury.

However, Coach Arsene Wenger has said that he will wait until the last minute before deciding whether Fabregas has recovered enough from right leg and knee bruises to play, The Sun reports.

The Spanish star has said that he is desperate to face Barca.

He told a pal: “I”ll do everything I can to play.”

In an exclusive Sun interview, Fabregas revealed just how much playing against the Catalans means to him.

“Ever since the draw was made I”ve dreamt about this game and I am desperate to play in it. I”ve never disguised my affection for Barcelona, it”s where I was brought up and where I learned so many beautiful things about football,” the 22-year-old star said.

“But Arsenal has the same principles and this is our chance to show the world that we can stand shoulder to shoulder with Barcelona and emerge triumphant. You can”t imagine how much I want to be part of that,” he added.

A cautious Wenger said: “He didn”t appear in training because at the moment he is not fit to play. We will give ourselves 24 hours more and assess the situation. If Cesc is fit I will play him and the medical staff tells me there is still a chance he will be available. But that will be decided in the warm-up tomorrow night. That tells you how late we”ll leave it.

“If he is not capable to play I wouldn”t even put him on the bench,” he added. (ANI)

Four-member team set up to probe Air India fire incident

Mumbai, Sep 5 (ANI): A four-member in-house committee has been set up to probe the Air India fire incident that took place at Mumbai International Airport on Friday.

Nearly 200 passengers were onboard on Riyadh bound Air India flight (AI-829) while the aircraft’s left engine caught fire while taking off.

Many passengers suffered bruises and cuts while sliding down from the chutes but were taken to the Mumbai International Airport Pvt Ltd (MIAL) casualty centre and given first aid.

They said that timely information provided by a passenger led the crew to stop the flight from taxing off the runway for Saudi Arabian capital Riyadh.

Flight 829 was immediately grounded when sparks were detected flying out of one of the engines.

The 213 passengers onboard were evacuated by slides to safety. Four fire engines were rushed to the spot, as also other equipment and personnel. (ANI)

Dokic’s father threatens to blow up embassy over interview

Sydney, May 6 (ANI): Tennis star Jelena Dokic’s father, Damir, is threatening to blow up the Australian embassy in Belgrade following his daughter’s revelations that he physically abused her.

The Serbian newspaper, Blic, is reporting that Damir phoned the Australian ambassador in Belgrade yesterday, and also threatened to blow up her car with a grenade launcher if she did not do something about the interview to be published in the Herald’s Sport and Style magazine tomorrow.

“I’ve been through so much more, been in such difficult positions, that playing a tennis match or having a difficult day is not a big deal for me. It’s just the way it makes you,” she added.

A spokeswoman for the Department of Foreign Affairs said: “We are aware of a newspaper article along the lines of [a threat having been made by] Damir Dokic, but DFAT does not comment on security matters relating to our staff in overseas missions.” (ANI)

Real estate executive killed because of old enmity: Cops

Gurgaon police said on Wednesday that the 28-year-old real estate firm executive had been killed as part of a well-hatched conspiracy. Parveen Chawla, assistant manager (marketing) with Jones Lang LaSalle Meghraj, was probably shot dead and his body dumped into his WagonR car and parked at Sector 29 well before 10pm on Monday, when two beat constables spotted it, Gurgaon police commissioner S.S. Deswal told HT. “So far we have not been able to reach any motive behind the murder of Parveen as it looks to be an act to settle an old enmity.

Our investigations reveal the assailants had been chasing him for long. He had stopped for drinks with friend Ajit Rathee at Machaan, a roadside eatery on Golf Course Road, around half past nine,” Deswal said.

Both left for their Sector 5 homes in Sector 5 in their respective cars, Chawla following Rathee. Chawla’s car disappeared in South City, Rathee had said.

“The murder took place between 9.30 and 10 pm,” Deswal said. He was overpowered, pushed to the front passenger’s seat, and possibly shot in the neck and shoulder from behind while being driven to a secluded place, as there were bloodstains on the front passenger seat.

He was possibly moved to the rear seat later, where he was shot again in the chest. The rear seat had many bloodstains.

He was possibly thrashed, as his body had bruises all over. His attackers also tried to strangle him with a piece of cloth.

The four bullets were fired from a 9mm pistol. Deswal ruled out ransom and robbery as motives behind Chawla’s murder.

An attacker, who had snatched the executive’s cellphone while he was talking to his fianc and #233;e, had demanded a ransom of Rs 50 lakh. Even Chawla’s father had been told to deposit the ransom amount in Rajasthan after he called.

Police on Wednesday also questioned Chawla’s fianc and #233;e, who was also his colleague. His cellphone was also recovered from under the seat of the car.

The police had earlier suspected the attackers of taking Chawla’s cellphone.

Have your say: Baby P

An investigation into suspicious bruises on the little boy’s head and body “drifted” and the six-month limit for bringing a common assault charge passed, the unpublished serious case review into the tragedy found.

The report said the child might have been “more effectively safeguarded” if his mother had been charged, according to BBC London.

Baby P, who cannot be named for legal reasons, was 17 months old when he died at the hands of his mother, her boyfriend and their lodger in August 2007.

He had suffered more than 50 injuries despite receiving 60 visits from social workers, doctors and police over an eight-month period.

The little boy came to the attention of the authorities in December 2006 when he was taken to Whittington Hospital in north London with bruises on his head, nose, chest and right shoulder.

Detectives arrested his mother, Baby P was placed on the child protection register, and a file was submitted to the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS).

The prosecutors requested further evidence, including medical reports, and a specialist was identified to carry out a review of the child’s injuries.

But in March 2007 the detective in charge moved to a different part of the Metropolitan Police without formally handing the case to another officer and the investigation “drifted”. The specialist had no further contact from police until July 2007 despite emailing to ask what was happening with the case, the report said.

Scotland Yard said it could not comment on the report.

Female orangs snatch food from males to test potential mates

Washington, April 3 (ANI): A new study has revealed that female orang-utans test potential mates by snatching food from the males, which enables them to find out whether they would react violently or tolerate the stealing.

Maria van Noordwijk, who authored the study at the University of Zurich in Switzerland, revealed that the females would scream and tended to end the interactions when the males reacted violently or took the food back.

The researcher said that the behaviour seems to be significant evolutionarily, as relationships with aggressive males can be extremely damaging for females.

In the study paper, van Noordwijk writes that males who are aggressive to other males may attract females.

However, when a male is aggressive to a female, he limits her ability to choose when and with whom she mates, as she faces attacks if she does not do as the male wishes, writes the lead author.

“She could endure injuries, from bruises to broken bones, if his attacks were to knock her out of a tree,” National Geographic News quoted van Noordwijk as saying.

The researchers admit that they did not see the females giving immediate sexual favours in return for the males tolerating the food stealing.

However, van Noordwijk said: “We think the stealing allows females to test males for their tendency to be aggressive toward them so they can determine whether they are worth further associating with.”

A research article on this study has been published in the journal Behavioral Ecology and Sociobiology. (ANI)

Here’s how Marisa Miller hides cellulite

Washington, Mar 24 (ANI): Model Marisa Miller has revealed how she cheats cellulite when getting ready to strut in a swimsuit.

“Skin is huge and there are so many great bronzers. Self tanners were a little funky ten years ago but the color is a lot better now. The California native also revealed the secret behind her stunning six-pack.

“I box a lot, I spin and I surf. I try to mix it up. I obviously have to be in shape 24 hours and the gym can be super monotonous, so I just get outside and try to make it fun so my body doesn’t get bored,” she said.

However, the stunner does have to cheat a little in order to hide her cellulite when getting ready to strut in a swimsuit. (ANI)
